Hello, Marine 69-71. This is the fourth issue of WikiProject Puerto Rico's newsletter. The newsletter is intended to help all members to keep up with the latest news relating to the project. Please help with the newsletter by suggesting content to be included on the newsletter by leaving a message on my talk page. | |
I would like to pay a small tribute in this edition to Tony "the Marine". Editing since May 24, 2004, he has been one of our project's most active editors and has become one of Wikipedia's most recognized writers. He has authored over 400 articles, including 4 Featured Articles, 1 Featured List, 10 Good Articles, and 28 DYKs. His name has appeared in newspapers and magazines and has been mentioned by politicians and artists. He has brought Puerto Rico's history and its people to the web. He has shown the world that Puerto Ricans have done much more than just be gangsters and drug dealers. He has shown the world that we have contributed to history and the world just as much as any other group of people. On September 29, 2007, Tony announced that we would not be writing for Wikipedia anymore. We, the members of this project, are sad that he will not be able to continue to spread the word of Hispanics' contributions here on the web, but I, for one, feel honored that he has entrusted us with the duty of continuing and improving his excellent work. Tony, rest assured that your contributions, your wisdom, and the help you provided to all of us when we were new users will be remembered for generations. - Fortunately, there are a lot of images for him on Flickr. See http://flickr.com/search/?q=Jonny%20Moseley&w=all Pick one you like that looks like it really was taken by the Flickr user, not just scanned from a magazine, and send that Flickr user an email asking them to change the license on it to Creative Commons Attribution or Creative Commons Attribution Share Alike. Their incentive is that if they do it, you will put it up on the article, and the attribution for the image will link to their Flickr account or website, or wherever they want, and Wikipedia is the #9 most popular web site in the world. My success rate for questions like that is a bit over half, so with over 100 images to choose from, it's almost certain you'll get someone to agree. Hi Tony:
Thanks for your careful maintenance of the sections on Puerto Rico. I am contacting you re: Virgil Miller, my Great Uncle. He was born and raised in Puerto Rico. After he graduated from High School in San Juan, he attended West Point, from which he graduated. He led a very fascinating life, most especially his contributions during WWII leading the 442. In addition, he was very proud to be one of the first people from Puerto Rico to graduate from West Point.
If you want further evidence of any of this- note in the "Military History of Puerto Rico" section of Wikipedia, the book that is cited, Historias de Puerto Rico- the author is Paul G. Miller. Paul G. Miller is the father of Virgil Miller. There is also a school named after him in Puerto Rico, which you can also confirm via a Google search. This is the most open source evidence I can show you, but I did not add his name lightly to this most distinguished list of Puerto Ricans.
By taking his name out, and not including him, I believe you are omitting a very interesting man from the roster.
I hope that you agree and will put his name back in the appropriate sections in Wikipedia.

- Hello Andrew, I very much want to add the name Col. Virigil Miller. I would'nt mind even writing an article about him. The only problem is that Wikipedia requires verifiable sources to be cited which can proof that he was born in P.R. Tony, I've commented on the GAR of Hispanic Admirals in the United States Navy. I think some users there have a point that the article, is not an article, but a list. I explained why there. I also think some references could be improved, like they said. After that, you should move on to WP:FLC, which I think it could pass if the sources are fixed.
As for original research, I totally disagree with them. I wrote my opinion, and think it's well founded. This article should not be deleted in any way.
I apologize for not supporting your work as much as you deserve it. Works like these don't get written very often, and certainly not of that quality. I just expressed my true opinion on the WP:GA technicality of not including lists. Take care. - Mtmelendez (Talk|UB|Home) 05:31, 4 October 2007 (UTC)

Can I impose upon you for a favor?
Hiya Tony! Can I bug you for a favor? About two weeks ago a pair of fair use images were tagged as being considered for deletion. I didn't make a move to save them becuase the sourcing requirements for these two images were to hard to come up with, and I was not entirely sure that they had been published off Wikipedia, so I decided the best thing to do would be to allow both to be deleted. The first one was, but for some reason the second one (Image:Tom II (Toonami).JPG) is still here, and its been almost two weeks since it was up for deleteion. I don't think anyone will object to deleting it at this point (its been tagged since september), so could you delete it for me? I would apreciate it. TomStar81 (Talk) 08:28, 13 October 2007 (UTC)

GA sweep: Pedro del Valle GA status on hold
I have reassessed Pedro del Valle as part of Wikipedia:WikiProject Good articles/Project quality task force. We are currently revisiting all listed Good articles in an effort to ensure that they continue to meet the Good article criteria.

- The Puerto Rico Legislature is divided on the issue of flag color. The House uses the dark blue while the Senate uses the light blue (you can see it when they broadcast their sessions on www.senadopr.tv). I heard the Sen. Pres. one day explain that since the PR flag is a reversal of the Cuban flag and the Cuban flag included light blue stripes, the light blue triangle on the PR flag is historically correct.Pr4ever (talk) 01:38, 20 November 2007 (UTC)

- Hi Tony,
- I appreciate the 'writing pointers' you posted on my talk page. With respect to surnames, I'm not really a genealogy expert. I've just been wrestling with the problem of disambiguating biographical articles based on common given names and surnames along with many other users who are attempting to create more consistency in this area. "List of People by Name" didn't work out, so hopefully the separate surname and given name pages will. As for the surname Cole, this is what my limited research has come up with:
- It is especially common among the Dutch.
- It has at least two separate lineages - one derived from Nicholas (which means people's victory), and one derived from Old English (meaning black).
- As a common surname with multiple origins, it's quite possible that one lineage of Cole's began in Ireland. I hope this helps!

The use of flag icons in the birth and death information in a biographical article's introduction and/or infobox is strongly deprecated, as flags imply citizenship and/or nationality. Many people born abroad due to traveling parents never become citizens of the countries in which they were born and do not claim such a nationality. For example, actor Bruce Willis was born on a U.S. military base in Germany, so putting a German flag in his infobox, for any reason, might lead the casual reader to assume he is or was a German citizen. Similarly, many people die on foreign soil due to war, vacation accidents, etc. without any effect on their actual citizenship or nationality.

Hi - did take a quick look when you sent the e-mail; but, haven't made any edits. I'm trying to get organized for the November 1 update to the USMC portal. I've updated the picture, think I have the bio decided on, but am unsure of the article — I have an idea, but the article needs some major fixing first ... which I've been researching additional sources. In between, I've been making minor tweaks to USMC bios (looking for good candidates amongst them)...
I'll look more in depth at the article as soon as I finish with the portal.

Ron Rivera
Through your reversion, the Ron Rivera article now begins oddly again, by saying that Rivera "is" the first Puerto Rican and Mexican to play in the NFL. Since he's no longer playing in the NFL, however, "was" would be the natural choice in English. The feat described is something that has already occurred. It is no longer occurring. That's why I made the change, and I disagree with your statement that "was" suggested Rivera was dead. It most certainly does not. After all, we'd never say that Bill Clinton "is" the 42nd President. He "was" the 42nd President. And the use of "was" doesn't imply that Clinton has died. Regardless, best wishes, and I'll move my copy-editing on elsewhere.GreenGourd 02:31, 2 November 2007 (UTC)

Tony, you had unblocked YoSoyGuapo (talk · contribs) a couple months ago with an apparent agreement that he refrain from edit warring. Well, he is at it again and there is a thread started at WP:ANI#User:YoSoyGuapo. What I personally find particularly alarming is that now he is following Couillaud (talk · contribs) to other completely unrelated articles to start edit wars there as well. I've been the subject of personal attacks Personal Attacks
Baseball Bugs and Couillaud have both tried to bate me with personal attacks calling me "Googleman" [3] stating that I learned English last week [4] Stating that I am trolling [5] stating that they are going to do something [6] for which I said they should [7] and then giving a sarcastic response [8] and commenting on my spelling [9]. From going thru my history Coulliard could tell that I am hispanic (especially due to my usage of terms like Hermano and my Username of YoSoyGuapo) he has made comments mocking my heritage stating wikipedia may not have the "cojones" [10] to fix this.

Should i simply walk away from this article? I haven't been on for a while and didn't touch the article b/c I wanted it to cool down. Nothing happened and Couillaud and Baseball Bugsgot personal with personal attacks. Should I just not touch this article anymore or ask for community mediation? What is Tag & Assess MMVII? We'd better explain. A month or so back, we ran a script to list all the articles in categories related to military history. This gave us about 165,000 articles. Some of these are already tagged and assessed as military history; some are military history but not yet tagged and assessed; some are not military history articles at all. Charlie Pasarell
FYI, Charlie Pasarell was one of the greatest Puerto Rican tennis players in the mid-1900's---long before Gigi Fernández and others. His wife, Dora Matos de Pasarell, later acquired fame, too, as Gov. Ferré's Sports and Recreation head in 1969, the first female to hold the post.Pr4ever 01:45, 6 November 2007 (UTC)

Tony this user was confirmed as sharing the identity of a obvious sockpuppet (based on behaviour please see the conversation linked on Hypathia’s user page where this more detailed) of Wiki En Wiki, this originally started when I asked the opinion of Lar who attended the Wiki En Wiki case and blocked several of his sockpuppets, Lar agreed with me about the user being a obvious sockpuppet of Wiki En and ran a checkuser that identified Hypathia as sharing this user’s IP address, I was somewhat skeptic of this at first seeing some behavioral differences between the users, but then noticed that both users added simmilar opinions in a merge discussion wich at the very least suggests sockpuppetry on Hypathia’s behalf and established a conection between them, even after noticing this I asked Lar to run a second checkuser that brought back the same results, I know that Hypathia doesn’t appear to be a bad faith user but after two checkusers and contributions linked her to this user I am convinced that we have a “good hand-bad hand” situation here. - Caribbean~H.Q. 20:09, 11 November 2007 (UTC)

Hi! I saw, that you have reverted my edits. But there is no need, because e.g. a Puerto Rican boxer is already a Puerto Rican sportspeople... All the categories "XXX sportspeople" have only subcategories and no athletes. Please see e.g. Category:American sportspeople! So it would be nice to do the same with "Puerto Rican sportspeople"? García Méndez and Tristani
I just saw your rv of García Méndez and Tristani.
Tristani was the first Hispanic woman to be appointed as one of the five commissioners of the highly influential Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and served under President Clinton during the latter part of the 1990's, immediately after the 1996 federal legislation deregulating communications, during which the FCC had to simultaneously handle the explosion of internet, VoIP, cable TV expansion, the Bell system breakup and ensuing mergers and acquisitions, the commercialization of satellite radio, the popularization of GPS, etc. and she excelled in making these technologies rapidly available as fast as possible. She resigned from the FCC to run as the thankless Democratic nominee (the first Puerto Rican woman to run for the United States Senate, but not the first Puerto Rican since Paul Feleciano ran against Sam Brownback in Kansas) against incumbent Republican Sen. Pete Domenici in NM.
García Méndez is so notable that several weeks ago the Mayagüez General Post Office was named after him, by authority of a law recently signed by President Bush, in a bipartisan ceremony presided by Rep. Fortuño, Senate President McCklintock and Mayagüez Mayor José Guillermo Rodríguez. The expressway from Mayagüez to Aguadilla (PR-2) is officially named after him. He and Don Luis Ferré were the top pro-statehood leaders from 1940, after Martínez Nadal's death, until the 1968 NPP victory---known both as "el hombre" and "el líder". He is the youngest Speaker in history. He founded Westernbank, currently the third largest in PR and the only one hneadquartered in "la isla", that is, outside of the San Juan metro area.

- Thanks for considering my comments re Tristani and García Méndez. The previous comment in my talk page was the result of some minor edits I did in the Puerto Rico page which I immediately explained in the discussion page. My subsequent response was as follows:
- The only edits I made, accompanied by an explanation in the discussion page, were the following:
- 1-I added the word "partially" to the existing phrase "self-governing". The article itself notes that Puerto Rico is not fully self-governing. For example, it recognizes that PR's head of state is the President, yet voters in Puerto Rico don't participate in his (or her) election. While the Congressional legislation in 1947 and 1950-52 added important self-government powers to Puerto Ricans, it is not yet fully self-governing. That is why the PDP, the NPP and the PIP all seek additional governing powers, either through the "enhancement" of the current status, statehood or independence. This is not a POV but undisputed facts.
- 2-I added the word "organized" to the existing phrase "unincorporated territory". Under US constitutional law, as noted by the 2005 White House report cited in the article, territories are classified as "incorporated" or "unincorporated" and as "organized" or "unorganized". Puerto Rico, according to the Insulas Cases, remains "unincorporated" (and once again all 3 parties are in agreement on this undisputed fact) and, with the approval of the Organic (as in organized) Acts of 1900 and 1917, the Elective Governor Act of 1947 and the 1950-52 legislation culminating in the promulgation of the PR Constitution on July 25, 1952 is undisputably "organized".
- 3-I modified the population density ranking from "21st" (compared to what?) to "2nd", after New Jersey, by mistake. Puerto Rico is actually third, behind DC and NJ. Indisputably under US sovereignty, PR population density should be ranked in comparison to other US jurisdictions.
- 4-I modified the date of the last Population Census from "2006" to "2000". The last decennial census was in 2000, which should not be confused with less accurate population estimates or projections made by the Census Bureau on not entirely reliable Puerto Rico Planning Board data. Once again, the 2000 Census is a fact.
- With respect to "Government type", it should not be mentioned as commonwealth or territory but as "republican", because that is the government structure in PR---a three-branch presidential system. Territories of different nations can have republican, parliamentary, monarchical, etc. types of governments. Commonwealths likewise can describe a parliamentary, monarchical or republican system. The best word to describe the government type in PR is "republican".
- In summary, the changes I made are not the product of a particular point of view but the reflection of fact.
- A revision of my contributions will reveal that I have written objectively about numerous figures in and out of Puerto Rico with different ideological leanings, always attempting to base them on facts and not any particular POV in keeping with wiki policies.
- I request that any objection to my writings be substantiated at least to the same extent and with the same respect that I attempt to substantiate them in the edit summary and the discussion page and the level of respect that I always accord other wiki contributors who devote time and effort to the success of this successful attempt to expand knowledge about people, things and events we all care about.Pr4ever (talk) 04:01, 19 November 2007 (UTC)

Category question
Tony, I just came across Category:Puerto Rican Marines and I really think it is not a good idea. I know where it comes out of but it really is a bad precedent and rubs me wrong in many ways. Does this lead to follow on categories for Black, Irish or German Marines? There is also the point that while we all have heritages that we are proud of when the uniform went on we were green and the Marine Corps never broke itself out any other way. Replying your query about Marcelino Serna: I believe the "Italian Medal of Merit" you described is the Croce al Merito di Guerra (War Merit Cross), which, like its French and Belgian equivalents the Croix de Guerre, were awarded rather liberally to Allied personnel who served in their territories during World War I. The scan of the Senate resolution
Let me congraulate you for the achievement. However, there is a problem with the scanned image of the reusliton - it might be a copy-vio.
Because it is a scanned image, there is no new copyright created. Thus, the copyright resides within the Sente itself which might restrict its use in Wikipedia. (Such government document might be copyrighted.) SYSS Mouse 19:53, 4 December 2007 (UTC)
- Reply: Copyright in this case depends on who created the document (i.e. the government). The Senate giving you a copy of the resolution is only a form of gesture and no implication of copyright is applied here. On whether it can be post here, it is up to them. The bottom line is that it is definitely not GFDL.

- I am the owner of the original, sealed and all and not the of a copy, so there isn't any copyright infringement. The uploaded copy is of the original. Since Puerto Rico is a territory of the United States, I believe that it's documents are public and also fall under the free documentations which United States documents fall under. A Wikipedia user called my attention this evening to the controversy regarding the copyright of (1) the text of a Puerto Rico Senate Resolution, and (2) the presentation copy of a resolution which the Senate gives to a citizen, in this case, Mr. Tony Santiago, and how to post this clarification. As is the case with all public documents in all states and territories of the United States, the text of S. Res. 3602, as well as the signed and sealed presentation copy of the resolution which three other senators and I placed in the hands of a very surprised Mr. Santiago in Phoenix last week are free to be duplicated in Wikipedia or any other media (although I'd appreciate you don't reproduce my signature on a bank check with my account number on it!) since they are public documents, produced at taxpayer expense, and intended for wide dissemination. Mr. Santiago or any of his admirers are free to use the images of these official documents at will. I reiterate my admiration and respect for Mr. Santiago's work on behalf of Puerto Rico's veterans and military heroes. Kenneth D.
