Image without license[edit]

Unspecified source/license for File:Town Seal.PNG[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:Town Seal.PNG. The image has been identified as not specifying the copyright status of the image, which is required by Wikipedia's policy on images. Even if you created the image yourself, you still need to release it so Wikipedia can use it. If you don't indicate the copyright status of the image on the image's description page, using an appropriate copyright tag, it may be deleted some time after the next seven days. If you made this image yourself, you can use copyright tags like {{PD-self}} (to release all rights), {{self|CC-by-sa-3.0|GFDL}} (to require that you be credited), or any tag here - just go to the image, click edit, and add one of those. If you have uploaded other images, please verify that you have provided copyright information for them as well.

For more information on using images, see the following pages:

This is an automated notice by MifterBot. For assistance on the image use policy, see Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. NOTE: Once you correct this, please remove the tag from the image's page. --MifterBot (TalkContribsOwner) 03:00, 17 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Litchfield[edit]

Hi Matt, great job on adding details about your town. I'm curious, why don't you want to show the name of the conservation area for the trail photo? Is there some other way we could make the caption less vague? Anyway, keep up the good work! --Ken Gallager (talk) 11:29, 4 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Ken, I have been working on this conservation area almost entirely by myself for the past couple of months and I am the one who coined the unofficial name. It will receive an official name tonight (10/4), which might not actually be the unofficial name given, so I thought it would be appropriate to abstain from using it until a formal name was established.

That's good to know! It will be nice to see the official name once it's been set. Thanks, --Ken Gallager (talk) 19:06, 4 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Ken, at the meeting tonight, the unofficial name of "Fallen Birch" was presented and it failed in a 3-2 vote. This vote was not formal, however, so the name is still yet to be finally determined.

Image source problem with File:Town Flag of Litchfield, NH with Seal.png[edit]

Image Copyright problem
Image Copyright problem

Thank you for uploading File:Town Flag of Litchfield, NH with Seal.png.

This image is a derivative work, containing an "image within an image". Examples of such images would include a photograph of a sculpture, a scan of a magazine cover, or a screenshot of a computer game or movie. In each of these cases, the rights of the creator of the original image must be considered, as well as those of the creator of the derivative work.

While the description page states who made this derivative work, it currently doesn't specify who created the original work, so the overall copyright status is unclear. If you did not create the original work depicted in this image, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright.

If you have uploaded other derivative works, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have created in your upload log. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described in section F4 of the criteria for speedy deletion. If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 02:07, 29 March 2019 (UTC). If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. File permission problem with File:Litchfield, NH Flag.png[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:Litchfield, NH Flag.png. I noticed that while you provided a valid copyright licensing tag, there is no proof that the creator of the file has agreed to release it under the given license.

If you are the copyright holder for this media entirely yourself but have previously published it elsewhere (especially online), please either

  • make a note permitting reuse under the CC-BY-SA or another acceptable free license (see this list) at the site of the original publication; or
  • Send an email from an address associated with the original publication to permissions-en@wikimedia.org, stating your ownership of the material and your intention to publish it under a free license. You can find a sample permission letter here. If you take this step, add {{OTRS pending}} to the file description page to prevent premature deletion.

If you did not create it entirely yourself, please ask the person who created the file to take one of the two steps listed above, or if the owner of the file has already given their permission to you via email, please forward that email to permissions-en@wikimedia.org.

If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:File copyright tags#Fair use, and add a rationale justifying the file's use on the article or articles where it is included. See Wikipedia:File copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have provided evidence that their copyright owners have agreed to license their works under the tags you supplied, too. You can find a list of files you have created in your upload log. Files lacking evidence of permission may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described in section F11 of the criteria for speedy deletion. You may wish to read Wikipedia's image use policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. -- Marchjuly (talk) 09:41, 29 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Matt Lepore. Although you've provided a source for this file, there's nothing on the source to suggest that either (1) you are the author/creator of the flag imagery or (2) the flag has been released by the copyright holder into the public domain or under a free license that Wikipedia accepts.
While it's true that many works created by employees of the United States Governments are typically considered to be within the public domain as explained in WP:PD#U.S. government work, the same cannot be automatically assumed for works created by state, country, city, or town governments. In fact, in most cases, copyright is claimed at the sub-national level with only just a couple of US states releasing their work into the public domain.
Now, if you're the person who created this flag (i.e. the person who designed it) and you didn't transfer copyright ownership to the State of New Hampshire, then you would be considered the author and capable of releasing the file under a free license if you want; just follow the instructions in the template I add to the file's page and send a consent email to Wikimedia OTRS. However, just downloading the flag from some website and then re-uploading it to Wikipedia neither makes you the copyright holder nor the author, which means you cannot upload the file under a free license with the permission of true copyright holder; so, in that case, you're going to have provide some kind of verification which clearly shows that works of the State of New Hampshire are considered to be within the public domain or have been released by the state under a free license. Usually, this is done by providing a link to some official state government website which clearly shows that works created by State of New Hampshire employees as part of their official duties are released into the public domain. Just for reference, being available (even for free) to the public by a public administrative body is not the same as being within the "public domain". -- Marchjuly (talk) 10:03, 29 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
