Palm[edit]

That's what I was thinking, see my comment here. WikiTownsvillian 07:23, 1 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for all your great contributions to the Palm Island article over the past couple of weeks during its term as the Collaboration, I think it’s amazing how much it has been improved to this point. It was probably at Stub level when we got into it, now I think it would be competitive for Good or A Class article and perhaps over the next few months it will get up to the standard of Feature.
There’s only one day left of it being the Collaboration so if we have any last ideas as to how it can be improved lets be bold and get into it now. But most of all I just wanted to thank you for all your work and help before it was finished. Thanks, WikiTownsvillian 08:28, 3 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! :) I agree it has improved out of sight! Thank you again for the help, do you think it is now good enough to apply for GA status? WikiTownsvillian 11:36, 4 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I agree and I have now nominated it :) WikiTownsvillian 13:04, 4 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for fixing that Matt, but what did I do wrong??? I just couldn't work it out. WikiTownsvillian 00:52, 23 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Ahhhhhhhh, thank you wise sage. WikiTownsvillian 01:16, 23 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Matt, thanks for your support with the Good Article candidate, I'm afraid I've got a huge week with work this week and so won't be able to dedicate a huge amount of time to it, but I'm happy with the list and I think we'll have no problem complying with it. I don't know if you have much experience in Indigenous issues (I know a vast majority of Australians are not very culturally competent through no fault of their own) but if you have any cultural experience or training could you please help out at Wikipedia:Village_pump_(policy)#Cultural_Sensitivity_vs_Accuracy.2FClarity Policy Village pump. Thanks, WikiTownsvillian 15:21, 25 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Matt, My Internet connection has been extremely poor this week which has been preventing me using the media monitor or doing any other substantial online research on Palm, this situation will probably continue over the weekend. Just giving you the heads up that I will probably be unable to do as much as I want to towards the Good article process. Thanks, WikiTownsvillian 07:22, 2 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

In case you didn't see, Palm Island made GA. Good work --Steve (Slf67) talk 06:18, 3 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks Matt, great news that it has made it to GA!!! WikiTownsvillian 11:36, 3 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Finalisation of entries to Riverina Template[edit]

Hi Matt and GW. I have tried to progress systematically across various road maps to include, as far as I can tell most rural community, hamlet, villages and towns within the template. The odd ghost town which is not on a conventional map, for example Mitta Mitta and Brushwood will be found as we travel around looking for photographs. There may be one or two errors which no doubt will be adjusted as we go through and complete articles and additions. However after combing through the maps tonight and double checking all of the names I think the current list is very complete and you might like to use it for basis of the checklists that you have created/are creating both here and on Wiki Commons.--VS talk...images 12:24, 1 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

PS Thanks for your message about your table - reply posted at my talk page. --VS talk...images 12:24, 1 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Is Barmedman in the riverina or is it too far to the north? I see you include Mirrool, and I know West Wyalong isn't in... Strange that there is an Ariah Park but Barmedman hasn't been created. Someone needs to mention that "old" Ariah Park was about 12 miles away, they had to move it when the railway line came through (I'm too anal about references to put my own "common knowledge" in).Garrie 21:46, 1 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • My two cents - Ariah Park is in Temora Shire which is part of the Riverina. We have included Mirrool because it is literally at the edge of Coolamon, Temora and Bland Shire. However the vast majority of the Bland Shire is in Central West and Barmedman is 36 kms north west of Temora. In my view that is too far into the Central West.--VS talk...images 22:59, 1 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Re Kapooka - it's much more part of Wagga than it was even in 2000. But with ongoing changes to recruit training I think Army recruits spend a lot less time and money in Wagga than they used to, and trainees from Forest Hill (largest electronics trade training facility in Aust I think) try to make up for it...Garrie 00:14, 2 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Kapooka[edit]

Hey Matt - I agree wholeheartedly and have already altered the page. I responded on the page with the following message...

  • I absolutely agree with Mattinbgn and others above - this article needs to be renamed immediately. The article is about a department of defence location that has been officially known as the Army Recruit Training Centre since December 1, 1998 Department of Defence - Australian Army] and is located within Blamey Barracks, Kapooka. Kapooka is the suburb of Wagga Wagga and that name is required for an article about suburbs in Wagga according to the Wiki naming convention for such locations. See Template:Wagga Wagga City. --VS talk...images 04:35, 2 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Matt - I hope you approve of a major re-write I have completed on our gallery page at Towns of the Riverina, New South Wales. As of today's date there are 251 localities on Template:Riverina. Each of these (as you will see) now has their own images page on Commons and is ready for uploading. (I have almost 200 images to upload which I will attempt to finish over this next week) Regards --VS talk...images 09:57, 4 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. In case you haven't noticed yet, Leyland Brothers has been selected as the new Australian collaboration. Please help to improve it any way you can. --Scott Davis Talk 11:33, 4 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Riverina images[edit]

  • I appreciate the comments thank you. I had a similar thought on image numbers - hence my leaving a gap between the two | | pipelinks between each wikipedia page and commons images. Once I get the rest of the almost 200 images up we can probably do a count on each page and add the number in the space - including a zero | 0 | where there are none (to prompt us). I agree - a lot more work to do but between the group we are getting there. Other than images to Commons this week I will attack as many red-links as work and free-time allow. --VS talk...images 11:43, 4 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • Hi in answer to your query about deletion of transwikid images, use the template {{NowCommons}} placing {{subst:ncd}} or {{subst:ncd|Image:Filename.ext}} to tag the uploaded images and they then become candidates for speedy deletion :-) Regards --Golden Wattle talk 10:27, 6 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Riverina template question[edit]

  • Thanks for the comments Matt. Good question. Sorry for the lengthy response but it will help to keep track of this question if we are asked by other editors. Naturally I agree with keeping our eye on WP:N and my way of doing that is to look for (as by the guidelines) that the location has been the subject of multiple, non-trivial published works from sources that are reliable and independent of the subject itself and each other. The trouble with this is of course the/our definitions of multiple and non-trivial.
  • IMHO I think that any locality is a place that is worthy of being noted or attracting notice again as per the guidelines - but of course for some localities the article we create on Wiki is probably the biggest thing ever written on the Web about that location. (Also just because a place doesn't have much evidence of existence shouldn't mean it doesn't get an article eg: Methul was nothing more than a sign (image is on page) but gosh does that area produce some grain etc). To some extent then we document history and for some locations it should (and does say) that the location etc is almost a ghost town, or nothing more than a couple of dilapidated old buildings etc.
  • To commence an article on any location I always use a minimum of five check points for each, asking the questions, (1) is the location/village etc detailed at the Geographical Names Board of NSW, (2) is it detailed at www.fallingrain's Directory of Cities and Towns in State of New South Wales, Australia, (3) can I find it in on the Australian Government's Geoscience Australia website, (4) does the location have a postcode through Australia Post, and (5)can I find the location on travelmate.com.au. If I get a yes on at least two (ie multiple) of these sites then IMHO it passes WP:N. If it doesn't then I delete it from the Riverina template (as I did for Allaway, Wemby and Wallundry in the past few days). The only accurate way of doing this is to go through the five tests with any given redlink. For example then for Coree and Tuppal I can answer yes to two or more of the above questions - and for Osborne Wells (because of your prompt just now) there is nothing and it should be deleted. Your thoughts (and if you are reading this GW yours?) please? --VS talk...images 02:34, 7 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Yes good idea. I have copied the lot over to Template talk:Riverina now.--VS talk...images

Where did you grow up?[edit]

Hey Mattinbgn I notice on your userspace "your" articles are Finley, Berrigan, Toc etc. Where did you grow up? Finley High School graduate by any chance? I grew up in Jerilderie. - UnlimitedAccess 07:33, 8 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

"I live and work in Berrigan", You poor bastard. :P And yes I recognise that photo very much, if I didnt know any better I would say thats my Dads ute at the pub. *grins* But a lot of people in that area have vehicles exactly like it. - UnlimitedAccess 08:37, 8 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Conargo photo question[edit]

Hi Matt, UnlimitedAccess has put up a photograph of the Conargo Pub on Commons - at Conargo. The image commons:Image:Photo-conargo-pub.jpg is definitely there but it doesn't show up on the commons:Conargo, New South Wales page - and I have tried a couple of possible remedies without success. I remember you had a similar problem before - can you recall how to fix it? --VS talk...images

  • Further to above - we have the same problem regarding one image out of two that UnlimitedAccess put up at Jerilderie - one worked the other commons:Image:Jerilderie-ned-kelly-post-office.jpg did not? If you let me know the answer (assuming you do know) then I can fix from now on also. --VS talk...images 09:37, 8 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Riverina article[edit]

I thought of rating it A, but decided that since I'd contributed a little to it that was somebody else's job (and it would have presumably made it ineligible for GA). You should probably nominate it for FA if your willing to put up with the harassment that that involves.--Grahamec 00:08, 10 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I am happy to report File:SoleteRayosÑajo.gif that there are no more redlinks on Template:Riverina. The template is therefore complete (other than for locations that we will stumble upon in the future). --VS talk...images

  • Thank you for the barnstar Matt - that was a nice surprise. Next step for me for all locations on the template is to add location information in the following format - nearest two locations, nearest city or alternate city, distance to Sydney. --VS talk...images 20:44, 11 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Locations/Distances - G'day Matt. I have added some thoughts here with regards putting 4 locations and distances up within each info box on localities within the Riverina Template. I would appreciate any comments? --VS talk...images 08:01, 13 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Commons and Riverina tagging[edit]

Hi Matt. I have commons and riverina tagged all articles from A - G. I notice that you are doing the same from the other end. I am about to go out for the evening but I thought I would quickly ask you if I am mistaken. I am putting in the following for the Riverina tagging {{WP Australia|class=Stub|importance=Low|riverina=yes}} thereby not double tagging to Riverina and Australia. Perhaps I am wrong with this thought??? I have gone in and adjusted Yuluma, Yoogali and Yerong Creek - but let me know if I have stuffed this up? --VS talk...images 06:40, 16 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

  • Sorry I should add that in the case of class equalling better than Stub - I compensate as class=Start etc. --VS talk...images 06:42, 16 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • I confess I don't know the answer. We only categorise images in one place so I thought we would do the same for articles within the Riverina region. It seems a bit superfluous to categorise in both seeing that the Riverina project is a child of Wikiproject Australia. Do you think a third or fourth opinion might help? --VS talk...images 11:52, 16 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • That's great work on the table adjustment - looks and feels much better. I did post the question to Golden Wattle last night also - to see her what her views are? Then this morning I have woken up remembering that she did the first one of the Riverina tags to Coolac so I thought I'd take a look at the history to see what she did in that case ... here. I will wait also before I go on with the tagging until we get a consensus. Today I hope to get pictures of towns and localities not yet photographed in and around Lockhart. Cheers until then. --VS talk...images 20:39, 16 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Matt. I went straight to the source (so to speak) to find an answer to this question. Should Riverina towns' talk pages be tagged with both Australian places and Riverina tags? Gnangarra has put his response here which explains things to me. Thanks for the time to clarify. I will go through from A - G to redo the ones I started and then see what is left in the middle (if you get the time to help from the other end?).--VS talk...images 02:04, 18 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

  • Great stuff. I agree tagging Cat:Riv is a good idea. Okay well just to give you an idea (for strategy purposes) I should be able to complete about A - L (or perhaps M) by later this afternoon. I will leave Cat:Riv unless you have less time? If you think that is a plan to get this hunk of work done? --VS talk...images 02:27, 18 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • Great work! I have finalised the a, b & c's now also. --VS talk...images 06:03, 18 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Irrigation Images[edit]

G'day Matt. I have two or three new images regarding irrigation that might be suitable for Riverina - What do you think? Do you want to put up the one or more that you like (if you like any of them at all) or I can - you're call? They are available here:
Centre Pivot Irrigation at Euberta
Centre Pivot Irrigation (close up)
Impact Irrigation at Millwood
--VS talk...images 09:30, 17 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

  • Thank you - I am glad that you like them. I support your nomination in WP:ACOTF and have also commented there. --VS talk...images 12:28, 17 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I seem to have misplaced my Commons password and don't appear to have an email address registered there. Double whammy :( I've also suffered home pc dramas of late, so my archive of Mildura (and irrigation) related images is not readily accessible right now, being on my main pc which is currently out of action.

I added an older image of mine to the Irrigation in Australia article just today, of a diesel pump used for irrigation in the Mildura area. Allow me some time to get back to 100% functionality and I'll be certain to jump in with some additions here. -- Longhair\talk 10:51, 2 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Irrigation in Australia[edit]

Hi. I've posted info messages to both Portal talk:Water and Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Rivers advising people that there is a proposed collaboration on Irrigation in Australia or similar. You might want to get in first and create one or both of the articles. If you and GW have decided that both should exist, we might have to work out how to split the ACOTF nomination, or have them as co-collaborations. --Scott Davis Talk 00:24, 19 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Wikiinking town names[edit]

Hi there, I noticed some of your edits... You may be interested to know, there is an automatic feature: [[Minchinbury, New South Wales|]] displays as Minchinbury and links to Minchinbury, New South Wales. The same happens when using an article disambiguated with either a comma, or parentheses such as [[Kevin Ryan (rugby player)|]] which displays as Kevin Ryan and links to Kevin Ryan (rugby player). So it saves a heck of a lot of typing mainly...

Hopefully I'm pointing out a feature you didn't know about. Happy contributing.Garrie 10:26, 23 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Matt, soldier settlement schemes directly influenced every state of Australia and have a direct link to irrigation commencement etc. Until today there was no article on Wiki covering the topic. I have started it and have also suggested it to be a WP:ACOTF article - would welcome your support if you think that such an article is appropriate for a collaboration project? --VS talk...images 02:00, 25 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks![edit]

Hi, just wanted to say thanks for the welcome and style information. It's good to know there are some friendly kolk around here.

Late night vandal attacks[edit]

Howdy Matt - Just letting you and GW know that we have a late night sneak vandal attacking pages under the IP 144.139.221.99 - tonight that person has targetted at least Gundagai and Wikipedia:WikiProject Riverina - just mentioning it so we can all keep our heads up. --VS talk 12:54, 5 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

  • Howdy again Matt - I get the feeling you must be away from the computer for a bit? I have completed a good chunk out of the list of suggestions from Nehrams2020 - I am going to leave the rest for tomorrow - mainly so that others can see what I have done (and approve or not) and also just to give others a go if they want. --VS talk 10:40, 6 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Understood - hope things get better soon on both counts. --VS talk 11:13, 6 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Yes - I agree - Consider it done - I will take a few of the CSU campus either some time today or tomorrow (I am in the neighbourhood over the next couple of days). I will post the good ones in our Wagga Wagga Commons area and put one up on Riverina in place of the logo. --VS talk 21:22, 6 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Jobs done. I have uploaded new image to Riverina opting for the informative style of pic. However if that is not preferred I will have 6 or 7 others up on Commons and linked to Towns of the Riverina by later this evening. --VS talk 03:18, 7 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

  • Good - glad you approve of image. I will be about tonight so if you need help, or another proof-reader etc pls let me know (it will probably also help prevent edit-conflict if I don't get on the page at the same time as you). --VS talk 04:01, 7 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I'll look it over later tonight, I'm kind of busy studying for a test right now and I have four long classes today. When I get the chance, I'll look it over. Good job on fixing the suggestions so quickly. --Nehrams2020 17:04, 7 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Speedy deletion[edit]

Hi Matt. I saw your message on Golden Wattle's talk page and took care of it. Such patent nonsense meets the criteria for speedy deletion, and you can bring to the attention of administrators by tagging it with {{db|reason}} or related templates. Of course, posting a note to an admin works too :) Thanks,--cj | talk 12:29, 7 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there. I noticed you corrected a link from Captain John Hepburn to John Hepburn. I think you are correct that ideally the link should not include the Captain title, but since John Hepburn links to an article on a different person I think using Captain is the best way to disambiguate it. Wikipedia:Naming conventions (people) says "King", "Queen", "Blessed", "Mother", "Father", "Doctor", "Mister", or any other type of qualifier is generally avoided as first word for a page name of a page on a single person, unless for disambiguation or redirect purposes.

I also came across an existing example of a page with Captain in, Captain Walter Synnot. I will change the link back to Captain John Hepburn, if you think this is wrong I'd appreciate if you could explain the naming conventions to me. Thanks --Jon186 15:28, 17 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Changing the link to "John Hepburn (squatter)" seems fine to me, as I see you have done, along with some other nice changes. I'm not sure about notability myself, you're probably a better judge on that than I am.--Jon186 19:55, 19 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there I agree with your sentiment that the MFL is notable - but individual seasons are not.

Would you reach the same conclusion regarding individual teams? I have listed North Ballarat Rebels for deletion as a member of the TAC Cup league (that can't even be right - the TAC Cup is a trophy or competition not a league). Depending on outcome I will more than likely group list Murray Bushrangers, Calder Cannons, Geelong Falcons, Western Jets and NSW/ACT Rams (who only joined the comp between 1995 - 2002 the closest result to premiership success being runners up in 1996!) Garrie 04:35, 19 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

At least Strathmerton Football Club plays in a semi-professional league... the Rebels are in an U18's comp! Garrie 21:42, 19 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Notability of Australian football leagues, clubs and players[edit]

Mattinbgn,

Thank you for your message. The English soccer leagues are Tier-10 and above as that is the eligibility for the FA Cup see Wikipedia talk:Wikiproject Football.

I would suggest that we might want to leave a message on the Australian Wikipedians page as well as the AFL Wikiproject. I think that there is a Wikiproject for Australian soccer as well. I don't think that there is for rugby union or rugby league.

On an off-hand basis, I would suggest as notability for leagues or clubs:

  • membership of a national or international competition;
  • membership of an competition affiliated with the AFL, NRL, ARU or Football Association.

For players, I would suggest:

  • member of a team actively competing in a national or international competition or a statewide competition before the introduction of a national competition;
  • membership of a hall of fame for that sport;
  • selection for a representative side in an open competition.

Regards. Capitalistroadster 03:19, 25 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Your guideline[edit]

  • Your guideline seems fine. I don't know whether you want to address the issue of player notability. Capitalistroadster 04:51, 25 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Kerr Grant[edit]

Updated DYK query On 28 March, 2007, Did you know? was updated with a fact from the article Kerr Grant, which you created or substantially expanded. If you know of another interesting fact from a recently created article, then please suggest it on the "Did you know?" talk page.

Clayton Utz[edit]

I took a quick glance over the Clayton Utz article. It is rather poor I agree. I've requested sources for most of the claims made within, and also marked the article for immediate attention using the {{WP Australia}} banner. There's a lot of info relating to this firm online so I'll try to wade through some a little later on and see if I can help improve the article to save it from deletion. -- Longhair\talk 03:28, 29 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
