CFD for Dover

Japanese names

The problem is, that rule to my knowledge does not exist. Instead the MOS-JA clearly says here: Wikipedia:MOS-JA#Names_of_modern_figures
- "For a modern figure—a person born after the beginning of the Meiji period (January 1, 1868 onward for our purposes)—always use the Western order of given name + family name for Western alphabet, and Japanese style family name+<space>+given name for Japanese characters."
- As in always as in there are no exceptions
- Taro Akebono is the man's legal name, so it certainly falls under MOS-JA.

- So why aren't the sumo wrestler bios named the same way? Not all bios use people's legal names - what about WP:Commonname?? Mayumashu (talk) 03:07, 27 September 2011 (UTC)
- Well, pen names are often treated the same way if they are considered to have a "family name". - I.E. Yukio Mishima
- There has been extensive discussion about the naming issue in general on MOS-JA. I'm not sure if it's discussed sumo wrestlers in particular.
- There is also Wikipedia:Manual_of_Style/Japan-related_articles#Pseudonyms - But it says "If the individual is more well known by family name + given name, a redirect for that should be used as well, and the article should note the multiple ways the name is used."
- It may help to start a talk page discussion about sumo names specifically. It may also help to conduct research and find what RSes say about sumo wrestler naming in English.

- Sounds like you are going about this in the right way, working through the different policies and guidelines. The impression I have is that WP:Commonname trumps many of the other naming policies for articles (but not necessarily categories). Thanks for providing the various references - I may start up a sumo naming talk at some point and won't for now attempt to revert back to simply Akebono (assuming you have undone - I havent checked).
