Contributions to the The Doon School page

Thank you for your many contributions to the The Doon School page, which have helped bring the material up to date. In making contributions, please take care regarding the following:

  • Grammar, in particular the consistent use of tense within a paragraph, avoiding redundancy within adjacent sentences, and capitalization of proper nouns.
  • Wikipedia:Neutral point of view: a Neutral Point of View is essential to making this a good Wikipedia page. It is important to ensure that excessive praise and grandiloquence is avoided; for example, something may indeed be "well-known", but "very well-known" or "world-famous" are excessive and difficult to substantiate.
  • Balance: when providing details of a particular subject, e.g. a list of people or a list of plays, please take care that this list is truly representative of the subject. Since Doon has been around for 75 years, it is difficult, for example, to list all the famous people who have given speeches at the school. The list of politicians you provided, for example, does not include people like Lord Mountbatten, Jawaharlal Nehru, Indira Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi, and the late King Hussein of Jordan and the late Emperor Haile Selassie I of Ethiopia. (Or even the late ornithologist Salim Ali who was such a frequent speaker that he was made a honorary member of the Doon School Old Boys Society.)
  • Avoiding bias: describing Kashmir House as "the house of gentlemen" is unwarranted, since this formulation is relative new in the school's overall history, and, more importantly, it overtly suggests that other Houses do not produce gentlemen of the same quality.
  • When taking material from the Doon School's own website, please remember that Doon's website is a marketing website, and would naturally have more puffery than can be acceptable in a Wikipedia article. Any organization will highlight even the smallest positive publicity in their website, but for inclusion in a Wikipedia article the material must meet Wikipedia's standards for notability which are considerably higher.

Note on Salim Ali: he was a frequent visitor to Doon over several decades, and continued to be a popular (if increasingly infrequent) visitor through the 1970s. He was probably the first person to be made an honorary member of DSOBS because of his long involvement with the school. While it is true that the birds of Chandbagh attracted him, it should be noted that he had a personal connection with Doon since his brother Aamir Ali was one of the school's oldest entrants.

Note on photographs: it is great that you have contributed some of your own pictures, but the file "File:Nehru in Kashmir House, The Doon School.jpg" is surely not your "own work" as you have indicated. The picture was very likely taken by Mr. Roshal Lal ("Melaram") who took most school pictures during that era. Please confirm that it is in fact, your "own work": scanning the photo, or even getting a copy from Doon, would not qualify unless the original photographer had explicitly assigned the copyright to Doon, and this can be documented. Otherwise, you risk having this picture removed. The same concern applies for the picture of Mr. Foot. Spy99 (talk) 19:38, 11 December 2011 (UTC)

Note on grammar: your last correction to The Doon School page changed "A student placed first..." to "A student was placed first..." In this instance, I believe the word "placed" was being using as a verb[1], rather than as a noun[2] in which case the sentence would read "A student took first place..."

A very tiny point, of course, particularly in this age of Twitter and SMS, but I was wondering whether you could confirm which usage is more correct. (It's been decades since someone successfully challenged me on points of grammar, so I am intrigued by your correction. ;-)) Spy99 (talk) 03:50, 13 December 2011 (UTC)

The Doon School page now appears to be a little longer than that of Eton College, which is far older and has much more illustrious history than Doon. This should suggest a natural limit has been reached, if not exceeded already. It is doubtful that you can add more detail at this stage that would not get edited out as being trivial by Wikipedia standards, and you would undoubtedly find that frustrating. Adding pictures

You don't need to be an Admin to add pictures.

First get the pictures. If you didn't take the picture yourself then you need permission from whoever did and that permission must extend to the picture being used anywhere, like the rest of Wikipedia content. (The picture of Doon school on Hindi wikipedia doesn't seem to have this - I don't s[eak Hindi so I'm not sure. It will probably be deleted if you add it to English Wikipedia.)

In the 'Toolbox' menu on the right select 'Upload file' and follow the instructions on the page that links to. Pick a good descriptive file name for the picture.

Go back to the page you want to add the picture to. Click edit. Put your cursor where you want to add the picture. Click on the photo icon in the menu above; this will give you the text you need to add a picture. Replace "filename" or "example.jpg" with the filename of the file you want to use.

Unlike article quality, a rating on the importance scale is one for internal project purposes only, and is used mainly for prioritising a project's scope of work. It is not of general interest to readers. See Project FAQ, Project Importance, Project Guidelines, and Article importance standards (schools). 'Top importance' keeps it in the forefront, and editors working on school articles are likely to edit it with a view to getting it to GA or FA standards. The Doon School does not quite meet GA, but with a bit of work it almost certainly would - see WP:WIAGA and WP:WPSCH/AG. Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 07:13, 9 January 2012 (UTC)

That being said, I strongly urge you to read Wikipedia:Guide to requests for adminship, Wikipedia:Adminship is not for new users, and Wikipedia:Not now, and ask you to reconsider whether you really do wish to go through with your candidacy; please understand that you stand very little to no chance of passing RfA at this point and that you are strongly discouraged from running for adminship. If you are still intent on running for adminship with that request and are absolutely positive this is what you want, please do let me know; otherwise, I'll go ahead and delete the RfA page for you in about a week or so from today. Okay good idea, I am also doing that (making a page for the umbrella company Max India). But you have to understand that he holds different posts for each of its (Max India's) off-shoots such as Chariman, Founder, non-executive chairman. Therefore, this should be shown on his page, but you just deleted everything and added founder of max india which is, somewhat, incorrect. I hope you understand. Many thanks! :)

I understand your frustration but it would be better to report a user at Wikipedia:Administrator intervention against vandalism rather than claim they are being blocked when you are not in a position to do this. Referencing

Bare URLs are considered bad form when adding references. It would be much better if you completed the reference using the appropriate {{cite web}}, {{cite news}}, {{cite book}}, {{cite journal}} template. Acceptable version: ideally has at least the page name, publisher and retrieval date <ref>[http://www.mallaigheritage.org.uk/exhibit/galleys.htm "Highland Galleys"] Mallaig Heritage Centre. Retrieved 25 February 2012.</ref>
Complex version using {{cite web}} - has more parameters you can use when you get the hang of things.
The first two look like:[1][2] in the body of the article and appear as:
  1. ^ "Highland Galleys"
  2. ^ "Highland Galleys" Mallaig Heritage Centre. Retrieved 25 February 2012.

Doon School refs problem

I believe the difficulty with your new additions is that the first one for "Anish Kapoor" lacks a set of closing braces (}}). Allens (talk | contribs) 11:54, 28 February 2012 (UTC)

Actually, it turned out to be multiple "syntax errors" like that, particularly later on when you were evidently getting tired. I recommend doing them a few at a time, then saving and making sure things are still working right. Allens (talk | contribs) 12:21, 28 February 2012 (UTC)

And when I read the whole lead in one go, the phrase jutted out like a sore. The phrase did seem very broken "He had a desire to do.... ". It was not fitting in the context. It's like he had a desire to eat ice-cream, or visit an amusement park. Of course, mine is not the final word on it and whenever I'm editing something I am fully aware that you guys will see it and if you don't agree we can always discuss it. Please check the user's credentials before throwing up some accusations. It was an expression of normal opinion and any change in ratings is not vandalism. It is just another opinion which you can in turn take a different view on. Learn to collaborate and deal with other editors in a calm manner and give credit where due. Thank you for your reply. It was certainly no 'normal opinion' as you put it. The ratings were given by an Administrator on SchoolWikipedia Project and when you, without even discussing with anyone, changed it to 'low' as if you had a personal vendetta with the page - is considered vandalism. If users on Wikipedia start changing everything which suits their own view, without discussing with anyone, it is a matter of grave concern. And please read my message on your talk page again. The thing you need to understand is that discussions at Templates For Deletion can be much slower than at Articles For Deletion. However, I asked around and located an uninvolved administrator who was willing to close the debate, since it was such an obvious 'keep'. Categories at Doon School

Greetings, I came across your edits at Doon School due to the fact that it popped up in the top-level cat Category:India. Note that an absolute minimum of over-arching articles should appear directly in a country cat such as for India, so something as specific as an individual school should be filed deeper in. The same for Category:Education.

I suggest you read WP:Categories to understand how categories are applied, and should be the most precise categories applicable. If every single school in the world were field under Category:Education it would be utterly swamped with thousands of articles. Likewise the category Category:India should not contain every article which touches upon India. I'm sure you'll agree that would be impractical, so please take care to use the most precise categories applicable so that each article falls in its proper place. Your recent spate (which you reverted) on the 'List of Doon School alumni featured list nomination' was more to do with your personal convictions, whatever they are I'm not averse to them nor am I challenging them (you're entitled to your opinion). But the fault is that you didn't distance yourself while reviewing it. And, casually, trashed the list (and thereby the hours I put in to improve it) by succumbing to your personal opinions of the school. I believe mixing your personal convictions with Wikipedia editing/reviewing is dangerously counter-productive to its well-established neutral standpoint. The Doon List

I do understand that you've spent a lot of time working on the Doon list, but you have to allow for the possibility that you might have been too close to the list and that in your effort to give it heft you may have enhanced the notability both of the list and of those listed. The stories in Indian dailes, I'm afraid, are not always reliable. The dailies tend to mimic each other; they tend to be sloppy with language; and they tend not to follow up. They speculate wildly one day, and the next day the story dies, never to be seen again. Their feature articles are often reliable though; some respected weekly magazines, such as the Outlook, are usually reliable as well.

You also have to believe that I have no ax to grind in this. Although I had heard of Doon School, it had never loomed large in my thoughts, and I'm not biased against either the school or its alums. The photographs were all uploaded by Ambreen Mubasher, who stated plainly for each one "Author= Ambreen Mubasher". Two editors have (in effect) accused her of stealing the photographs and lying in her uploads, based on (a) the size of the files, (b) the lack of metadata, (c) the fact that the uploads came from South Asia, and (d) the claim that Ambreen is discredited by some deleted edits, but I can't find any policy which supports this stance on any of those points. Thanks for the note; if you'd explained in the edit summary or on the talk page why you were removing it, I wouldn't have objected. Since http://viaf.org/viaf/150165455 is definitely about this school, it should remain. These templates are a method of making our articles a database of information that can be synchronised with other databases of information: the goal is to build the Semantic Web. Basically, it's meant to enable computers to recognise that http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Doon_School and http://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n85210925.html discuss the same topic, and this will be true even if we or the Library of Congress change a page's URL.
