Welcome![edit]

Hello, Michelle MR, and welcome to Wikipedia! My name is Ian and I work with Wiki Education; I help support students who are editing as part of a class assignment.

I hope you enjoy editing here. If you haven't already done so, please check out the student training library, which introduces you to editing and Wikipedia's core principles. You may also want to check out the Teahouse, a community of Wikipedia editors dedicated to helping new users. Below are some resources to help you get started editing.

Response[edit]

Hi! I know it'll be a while before Ian (Wiki Ed) is up and since I was awake overnight (former Wiki Ed employee and still love helping out!), I wanted to give you some feedback on your draft:

  • This needs in-line sourcing. By this I mean that rather than have the sourcing formatted like this:
This is a statement.(Hill, p. 123)
It needs to be formatted to be in-line so that the source appears as a little number behind the statement. Adding citations with Visual Editor is covered in this module and here.
  • This relies heavily on quotes. This isn't necessarily bad or wrong, but you should try to avoid relying too much on them and you should attribute them within the article. Ideally the content should be written in your own words, but sometimes there are only so many ways to write something so attribution is key.
  • With headers, only the first word is capitalized unless it's something like the name of a person or place - like a title. I fixed this and also removed the bolding and underlining.
  • This reads a bit too much like a study guide or research paper of sorts. Be careful to avoid taking a conversational tone. An example of this would be a statement like "A major contrast between verbal and non-verbal predication is that within the last mentioned the dependency is stamped as it were within the nearness of a negative molecule and in no other settings."
This is referring back to a prior statement/claim that was made and using that to build upon a point. Another example is the statement "it is conceivable". It's not that this is necessarily wrong - I think that your claim here is correct - but the issue here is that it's making a persuasive statement from a single/specific person and also makes an assumption of sorts upon the reader in that they will agree with the statement. Again, it's not that I think that you're wrong in this at all, it just runs afoul of the third person, neutral/encyclopedic point of view that Wikipedia uses.
Now all of these things would be something that would be absolutely fine in research papers and in almost everywhere else, but not as much on Wikipedia since we can only summarize what others have explicitly stated on the topic.
  • You may want to use fewer examples or format them so that they read a little easier. An example of possible formatting would be how things are styled at Scottish Gaelic grammar. However, also keep in mind that this is meant to be more of a general overview article for the entire language so it may be good to style it more like the grammar section at Dutch_language#Grammar or Māori_language#Grammar_and_synta, where it's part of a main overall article rather than an individual page. What you have is good, I don't want you to think that it isn't, it just needs to be styled a little differently so that the grammar section doesn't overwhelm the entire article.

I hope this all helps! I've tagged Ian so that he can add anything I missed. ReaderofthePack(formerly Tokyogirl79) (。◕‿◕。) 10:42, 10 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Tlahuitoltepec Mixe[edit]

Hi. Your additions to the Tlahuitoltepec Mixe were removed because they were so close to the source material that they probably still constituted a copyright infringement. When you add to Wikipedia, you need to paraphrase your source using your own words. Just changing some words from the source isn't sufficient. I recommend that you read Wikipedia:Close paraphrasing - it's a really helpful page. Also pinging Jtoscano96. Ian (Wiki Ed) (talk) 14:43, 18 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
