Gender

Hi! You might want to set your gender correctly in the "my preferences" menu, for cases like this. That is, if you want to disclose your gender, which is of course optional. I just figured that it's pretty obvious anyway since you say on your user page that your name is Matt :) Good luck with your RfA, I'm pretty sure you'll pass unless someone finds a dark, dark secret in your past. I sure didn't. Jafeluv (talk) 10:06, 1 July 2009 (UTC)

Done and done, and thanks! Matt (talk) 17:18, 1 July 2009 (UTC)

Question 4

Hi again! In case you're interested, the extremely admin-related Question 4 is discussed on decltype's talk page. Jafeluv (talk) 19:32, 1 July 2009 (UTC)

Lewis the First

Hi! Are you sure this meets the A7 criterion? If an article says that the subject has "gained a great following" and had "hit songs", it definitely does indicate why its subject is important or significant. I'm removing the tag. Please let me know if you disagree. Jafeluv (talk) 11:01, 3 July 2009 (UTC)

Generally speaking, musicians that don't assert notability from one of the criteria at WP:BAND qualify for A7, in my mind. "Gained a great following" and "hit songs" don't save him. Now, if it had said "wrote a song that reached #97 on the Billboard Hot 100", then that would have saved him. Regardless, it looks like someone else beat us to the punch on it. Matt (talk) 17:42, 3 July 2009 (UTC)
I have to disagree. The speedy deletion policy explicitly states that A7 "does not apply to any article that makes any credible claim of significance or importance even if the claim is not supported by a reliable source." Not meeting WP:BAND is a criterion for deletion, but not for speedy deletion. Looks like I'm in the minority with this view, however. Orangemike already deleted the article under A7. Jafeluv (talk) 21:49, 4 July 2009 (UTC)
Well, I've asked about this on the policy's talk page, and it looks like I was wrong. I guess you only learn these things through experience. Thanks for your input. And good luck for your RfA, by the way :) Jafeluv (talk) 22:58, 4 July 2009 (UTC)
I hadn't actually looked or asked about that, but it made enough sense to me, based on the fact that we speedy a lot of garage band pages every day under A7. Thanks for asking for the clarification. And thanks for your support in my RfA, it means a lot. :-) Matt (talk) 00:15, 5 July 2009 (UTC)

listasbot workgroup fix?

Given that the bot recognised the non-existent workgroup in this edit, would it be possible at all to get it to fix common simple errors rather than remove the workgroup entirely? Not sure if it's worth the programming hassle but it's an idea... Sillyfolkboy (talk) (edits)WIKIPROJECT ATHLETICS NEEDS YOU! 12:19, 4 July 2009 (UTC)

It is an idea, and I'll keep it in the back of my mind. Having never written a spell checker, I can't think of a good way to check for situations like that without making the code ungodly and unwieldy, but if I think of a way (or someone wants to suggest one), I'll certainly add it in. Matt (talk) 17:13, 4 July 2009 (UTC)

An exceptions list might be a good idea. i.e. if illegal character in listas then add item to exceptions list, don't process it and move on to next item. The exceptions list can then be examined manually to determine the best course for that particular item. Better for the bot to skip and flag for review an edit that it effectively already knows will result in a potentially incorrect result (assuming the bot makes the decision to drop the & and other illegal characters) than for it to action dropping the incorrect character. Ha! (talk) 23:03, 6 July 2009 (UTC)

There'd be a LOT of exceptions. The list would get pretty unwieldy pretty quick. Matt (talk) 01:39, 7 July 2009 (UTC)
How about processing them as normal but also logging the ones that have an illegal character for a couple of days to get an idea of how many there are? Depending on what's involved I might be able to do/undo them. Ha! (talk) 03:06, 8 July 2009 (UTC)
I might be able to spit something like that out. It might be a little while before I run this bot again, but I'll give you a ring when I do. Matt (talk) 03:08, 8 July 2009 (UTC)

Support at Pastor Theo's RfA

You should avoid statements like: "Support. I'm impressed with his answers. Pastor Theo also was one of the few people who supported my first RfA, so I'd be a fool not to return the favor." I'll assume good faith here, you'd probably support Pastor Theo even if he opposed your RfA, but supporting people just because they supported your RfA would make a mockery of WP:RfA. Aditya α ß 17:14, 7 July 2009 (UTC)

Yes, I probably would have, but this type of support is no worse than something like "Oppose Too many admins currently." The crats are free to ignore my !vote if they wish. Matt (talk) 17:25, 7 July 2009 (UTC)
Yea, but the ruckus the DougsTech affair caused shouldn't be repeated. I have a feeling the only reason your !vote didn't cause that sort of chaos was because it was a support !vote. If it was, for example, "Oppose- He didn't support my RfA" then all hell would have broken loose, even though both votes are based on the same principle. Aditya α ß 10:45, 8 July 2009 (UTC)

I saw what I considered evidence of the speedy on the original author's talkpage. But I guess I was wrong..... Postcard Cathy (talk) 14:49, 9 July 2009 (UTC)

Yeah, if I remember correctly, I checked the deletion logs for this page, and there was no evidence of the page ever having been deleted. Mikaey, Devil's advocate 17:53, 9 July 2009 (UTC)

Val Bunting

Hi, Can you clarify exactly how Val Bunting is notable? Regards RaseaC (talk) 22:20, 9 July 2009 (UTC)

Not saying she is. I declined the speedy because someone tagged it for speedy deletion previously, and it was declined. I would suggest either prodding the page or sending it to articles for deletion. Thanks, Mikaey, Devil's advocate 22:22, 9 July 2009 (UTC)

Your Request for Adminship

Dear Mikaey/Archives/2009,

I have closed your recent RfA as successful per the consensus of the community. Congratulations, you are now a sysop! Please make sure you're aware of the Administrators' how-to guide and are aware of the items on the Administrators' reading list. Finally, please don't hesitate in contacting me if you need anything. Congratulations. Here are what pass for words of wisdom from the puppy:
  1. Remember you will always protect the wrong version.
  2. Remember you must always follow the rules, except for when you ignore them. You will always pick the wrong one to do. (See #5)
  3. Remember to assume good faith and not bite. Remember that when you are applying these principles most diligently, you are probably dealing with a troll.
  4. Use the block ability sparingly. Enjoy the insults you receive when you do block.
  5. Remember when you make these errors, someone will be more than happy to point them out to you in dazzling clarity and descriptive terminology.
  6. and finally, Remember to contact me if you ever need assistance, and I will do what I am able.

Here is the delete log for the reposted page. Also of note: the term "hair metal" used in the reposted page is a re-direct on Wiki - redirecting to the glam metal article. There used to be an article called "List of glam metal bands" but it also was deleted and redirected following an AfD (see: log) In either event whether it is 'glam' or 'hair', the pages have past history of removal. Julian and Ageism

Hey Mike,

Just as an FYI, the reason why Ageism is such an issue with Julian is more a factor of Julian's previous stances on the subject as compared to his actually being under the age of 18. Age was not an issue just a few months ago when we promoted another user who was under the age of 18. The reason why it is different here is because Julian is one of the most vocal voices against ageism. He is the admin I quoted in the essay on Ageism who compared ageism to racism. A claim he made on several occassions. He also made the same statement about sexism. His issue thus isn't that he is under 18, but rather that he is one of the loudest voices on the subject. And the monster of the debates that stem from the subject, he's often at their core.---Balloonman NO! I'm Spartacus! 01:10, 12 July 2009 (UTC)

La Coka Nostra

Thanks for the protection of La Coka Nostra but its not really helping. The guy who was hiding behind a rotating IP address is now logging in and continuing the personal attacks and aversion of our editorial policy.  :( JBsupreme (talk) 03:45, 19 July 2009 (UTC)

Well, not a whole lot I can do at the moment, as I don't see an explicit 3RR violation there. I've put the page on my watchlist, so I'll see if anything further happens with it. However, as a side note, edit summaries like this and this are inappropriate (the latter because all it does is goad them on...don't goad them on). Mikaey, Devil's advocate 04:14, 19 July 2009 (UTC)
On second thought, given the circumstances (e.g., registered users are involved, something I didn't pay that close of attention to the first time around), I've upped it to full-protection. Mikaey, Devil's advocate 04:24, 19 July 2009 (UTC)

New histmerge list

De Baca County

What happened here: were there parallel De Baca County and DeBaca County articles? Thanks for fixing it, whatever was going on. Nyttend (talk) 16:37, 25 July 2009 (UTC)

Back in November of 2006, someone started De Baca County, New Mexico by cutting and pasting the text from DeBaca County, New Mexico, and then turning that page into a redirect. What I did was a history merge, which merges the histories of the two pages together, so that all of the history of the page is in one place, and all of the authors are properly attributed. Mikaey, Devil's advocate 17:43, 25 July 2009 (UTC)

The user in question has "disinvited" me to post on his talk page but continues to post on mine. He's trolling me and he can go fish. Yworo (talk) 02:30, 28 July 2009 (UTC)

Hmmm, missed that one. Have you thought about seeking an outside opinion on the matter? Mikaey, Devil's advocate 02:43, 28 July 2009 (UTC)
Uh, there really is no "matter" at all, if you mean the POV pushing by Grandscribe, something with which Tothwolf is completely uninvolved (as I said, he's trolling). That case is pretty cut and dried. There is no problem whatsoever with describing Linux distributions as Free software. The problem is the context in which GS is doing it. There is a template which has a source model field. Source models are primarily open source and closed source. A source model only has to do with whether the source is released or not. Another related but distinct property of software is its license. The terms public domain, free software and proprietary software describe the license. These are license models, not source models. GS misrepresents me as removing material without support, but in reality GS is adding without either support or citation. He's also been making POV changes to related templates, etc. So... whatever... Yworo (talk) 02:54, 28 July 2009 (UTC)
P.S. If you look through the history of say Ubuntu, you will see that GS has been for days (weeks?) adding this, only to have one or another editor remove it with the explanation that it is not a source model. He's not attempted to discuss it on the talk page, but simply puts it back the next day, and the next, and the next, despite a clear consensus (based on the number of different editors reverting him on different days) that the placement of the term is not appropriate. Yworo (talk) 02:59, 28 July 2009 (UTC)
Well, I'll tell you from what I've seen that you both are seeing each other as trolling the other one. I suspect, since you both seem to have similar interests, that you both have a lot of the same pages watchlisted, but Tothwolf sees it as you stalking him and edit warring on pages that he's worked on. I'd like for the two of you to be able to cooperate, and Tothwolf has admitted to me that he sees a lot of good edits in your contribution history, so I'm looking for ways to try to mend the differences between the two of you -- that's why I suggested using 3O to help settle those disputes. Mikaey, Devil's advocate 03:05, 28 July 2009 (UTC)
I'd prefer he just leave me alone. Yworo (talk) 04:47, 28 July 2009 (UTC)

Substituting surname

As I noticed you seemd an expert with with listbot and defaultsort bot, any idea how you can {{subst: a surname in the page title to DEFAULTSORT sort the categories? Its just I have a large batch of biographies to transwiki and I want to do it more quickly. So basically when you create the page it automatically places e.g Fritz Baier as Baier, Fritz in the categories. If not I gather there is a bot that can default sort the categories by surname and fix it afterwards?

I'd imagine it is something like {subst:PAGENAME} but with a little programming to read the last word of the title and place it first. It would save a great deal of time anyway. WOuld you able to make a Template:REVERSEPAGENAME or something which places the last word of the title first? Dr. Blofeld White cat 16:29, 12 July 2009 (UTC)

It theoretically could be done, but it would require the StringFunctions extension, which apparently isn't included in the version of the MediaWiki software that Wikipedia is using just yet. So, for the time being, I'd have to say "sorry, you're gonna have to do it by hand". Mikaey, Devil's advocate 09:28, 29 July 2009 (UTC)

OK thanks, maybe they could do something about that.. Dr. Blofeld White cat 09:42, 29 July 2009 (UTC)

Actually, the StringFunctions extension has been included in the current version of the MediaWiki software; my guess would be that it's disabled because it's too CPU-intensive. Oh well. Mikaey, Devil's advocate 09:46, 29 July 2009 (UTC)

Could you do me a favor then and ask BrionVibber if he could do something about it? Dr. Blofeld White cat 16:21, 29 July 2009 (UTC)

Changes to XQuery page

I'm very confused by the changes you've made to the XQuery page. You seem to have reinstated an old version that's rubbish - it contains blatantly false statements like that XSLT 2.0 was developed by the XQuery Working Group, and has far less information that we had on the page until a couple of days ago. But I can't relate the current content of the page to the history - not being a Wikipedia expert, I really can't see what's going on. Mhkay (talk) 22:54, 25 July 2009 (UTC)

I was performing a history merge -- basically, taking the history of one page and merging it into another page. What happened is that someone cut the text out of XML query language and pasted it into XQuery. This splits the information about who contributed to the article into two different places, and is undesirable. Unfortunately, part of the process of performing a history merge involves moving one page on top of the other -- this makes the most recent version of the old page into the most recent version of both pages -- therefore, once the history merge is complete, the last step is to revert to the most recent version of the page before the history merge was started -- this is what you are seeing in the page history.
