No problem - happy to help! Note that it is generally not a good idea to write a Wikipedia article about your own organisation - it will likely come across as biased, even if you try to make it encyclopedic. Also, unless it can be proved that your company is notable by several external sources, it is not ready to go onto Wikipedia. In short, Wikipedia is not an advertising platform. September 2013

Hello Mike. I saw you tagged my page as a speedy deletion. I understood the criticism and updated the page. We are important to prevent cyber bullying. It would be a shame if you deleted the page because we help a lot of bullied children. I created the page to make us be more famous so more people can find us and talk to us if they have issues with bullying. Unfortunately Wikipedia isn't designed to make organisations more famous - there needs to be some pre-existing notability from reputable sources, before creating the page. Mike1901 (talk) 21:28, 28 September 2013 (UTC)

Speedy Deletion Request Bob Ives UK

Hi,

The page Bob Ives UK should not be deleted. He has participated in many acknowledged international events. His name appears on both trophy pages here: Camel Trophy and Segrave Trophy, so it's only natural he has his own Wikipedia page. Hi, and welcome to Wikipedia! I don't personally have an issue as such with the notability - the issue is that nowhere on the page have any references been placed to notable sources, in order for the community to verify that notability. Especially for biographical articles such as this, I would suggest using your Sandbox (link at the top-right hand corner of every page) to start drafting the page, then you can always put it onto the public encyclopaedia itself when it's more developed. (Don't worry too much at first if your referencing formatting is a tad off, so long as it's clear they're there to verify notability, the community can always tidy these for you :-) ) Mike1901 (talk) 12:46, 4 December 2014 (UTC)

No - you're referencing other Wikipedia pages there - which cannot be a source in their own right. You need to be linking to external sources which aren't fan-generated - news sites and the like. The page is getting there now though - I'll give you a hand when I get some time this evening! I'll kill the deletion tag - but that doesn't stop others reinstating it if they disagree! Hi, I have linked to the official trophy past winners list, so hopefully this will clarify my source. Thank you very much I really appreciate that! This is a little overwhelming. Right, at least my page will be left alone for a little bit. How quickly can a page get deleted once it's been selected for the speedy deletion request? I've removed the tag and put an Under Construction tag in it's place - that should hopefully mean people will leave it alone from a referencing POV for now! I'll do some tidying on the page this evening (UK time) and will try and get some suitable references in there at that point if no-one else gets there first. I've tidied the article name slightly to fit in with Wikipedia's naming standards - don't worry, the old page will redirect. Jean Fourton deletion

Hi,

I really don't understand wy my page about Jean Fourton was deleted, I spent hours completing the article with references and I contested the deletion with a message, and now it's gone, no traces can be found!? I'd like to know why you've done this. I did explain myself why this person has an importance in arts and psychoanalysis history. Furthermore, the article fits the rules and references were good.

Could you explain your deletion? Are you able to cancel this, and make the article available again?

The reason why this page was created is not to promote the company or the name, but to give the insight who is standing behind the attractions like Multimedia Fountain Roshen (the largest in Europe), AIDA cruises etc. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vinnytsia_Fountain_Roshen

Hello!I saw you restored the changes I made on the article about Jorge Horacio Brito. My edits were not a mistake. I compared the two versions in conflict and I believed that the article was victim of vandalism, so I changed to a more "cleaned" version.   • You can use TemplateData to indicate how you want a template to be displayed in wikitext. Tools like VisualEditor that edit templates will soon use this information. [212]
  • Echo notification icons in MonoBook will look more like other icons in the theme. [213]
  • The Community Tech team is doing a community wishlist survey to understand what they should be working on. They are now accepting proposals in all languages. You can create your proposal in the small box above the blue button and click it when you're done.
  • Wikis can make the welcome notification link to a specific page. [214]
  • The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from November 17. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis from November 18. It will be on all Wikipedias from November 19 (calendar).

  • Internet Explorer 8 will no longer have JavaScript support. You will still be able to browse and edit Wikipedia, but will not be able to use some features. This can be solved by upgrading to a newer version or switching to a different browser. The change will happen in January 2016. [215][216]

It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. Problems

  • On September 29 users' skin preferences were removed by mistake on small and medium-sized wikis. This changed preferences back to Vector. Restoring all data would cause even more problems. Affected users who want to have their preference changed back globally can ask for it as a comment on Phabricator task T119206 until December 21 2015. [218]
  • Some scheduled tasks were not working properly from September to recently. This meant some pages in the special pages namespace were not updated. It has now been fixed. [219]

Changes this week

  • Wikinews, Wikispecies, MediaWiki.org and Meta will be able to use information from Wikidata. [220][221]
  • There are no MediaWiki deployments this week (calendar).

Future changes

  • Category watchlists are now available on test wikis and MediaWiki.org. The plan is to enable it on most wikis in January. [222]

Recent changes

  • Revision scoring will help to automatically identify bad-faith and good-faith edits. The point is to make it easier to block vandals and welcome newcomers. It currently supports Wikidata and 14 Wikipedias. [224]

  • Meta was not given access to information from Wikidata last week. This will happen later. [225]

Changes this week

  • You will be able to use wikilinks in Flow topic titles. [226]
  • IP users will have a toolbar with links to the user talk page and user contributions. Some Wikipedias already have this feature. [227]
  • You will be able to edit the graph size in the visual editor. You can either specify the size in the graph dialog or drag it to be the size you want it to be. [228]
  • It will be easier to write math in the visual editor if you don't know LaTeX. You can use symbol buttons instead. [229]
  • You will be able to use syntax highlighting when you write math with LaTeX in the visual editor. [230]
  • UploadWizard will look a bit different. [231]
  • The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 8 December. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 9 December. It will be on all Wikipedias from 10 December. (calendar).
  • New MediaWiki versions will now be on Catalan and Hebrew Wikipedia on Wednesdays. Other Wikipedias get the new MediaWiki version on Thursdays. [232]

Future changes

  • URLs in the recent changes IRC feed will no longer be rewritten to unencrypted HTTP. This could be a breaking change for bots dependent on the IRC feed. [244]
  • The edit tabs for the wikitext editor and the visual editor will be combined to one single edit tab. You will be able to choose which one you prefer. If you are not logged in, your choice will be saved as a cookie in your browser. You can test the single edit tab. [245][246]
  • There is a beta feature that adds links to the subject on other Wikimedia projects. This works much like the links to for example Wikipedia articles in other languages. It will go out of beta testing and be enabled for everyone in January. Wikis that don't want this can decide to have it disabled. [247][248]
  • The difference between "alerts" and "messages" notifications is unclear to some. The developers want feedback at the Phabricator task or on MediaWiki.org so they can make this better. You can give feedback in your language if you can't write in English.

Re: North Korea Edit

Hi Mike,

It may not be constructive to put jokes about North Korea, but it sure is funny. Can't we please just let one joke about North Korea stand, for the good of the project!? Even if its not the Nodong gag, I think it would be good to use humour to force North Korea to take a good hard look at themselves. All else has failed so far, why not? Maybe if North Koreans happen to sneak into the internet on a Chinese sim card and look at their country on wiki, seeing our joke(s) about their government may make them realize that they can and should question their government. Like, why can't I put that Kim Jong Il had no butthole, and didn't need to defecate according to propaganda? Does Wikipedia only like facts that don't offend people? Whats more important, the truth or being "PC"?

I understand that Wikipedia needs facts only, but we could sneak it in the reference or something, that it is just a joke maybe? Or at least allow my edit about the butthole...   • The visual editor uses the TemplateData extension to make editing templates easier. You will now get a warning when you edit a TemplateData form and leave it without saving. [251]
  • MediaWiki will get a new authentication and authorization system called AuthManager. This is planned to happen in a month or two. Some bots will need to change how they log in. Royal Signals

You have accused me of vandalism, even though the Wikipedia guidelines state that no good faith posting should be deemed vandalism.

Far from being hostile to the Corps, I am a former Signalman, and a life-member of the Royal Signals association. You assert that my post is inaccurate - what knowledge places you in a position to challenge my personal experience? I ask not in order to be confrontational, but genuinely to establish the basis for your claim.

Do you have service in the British Army or specialist knowledge of Royal signals practices and customs? If not I would politely suggest that the onus is on you to justify your accusation, not on me.

I repeat my affirmation that to my personal knowledge, the motto Certo Cito was almost universally , albeit unofficially translated by Corps personnel as "Shit or Bust".

Firstly, apologies if you feel I was unfair in determining your post as vandalism. It's quite difficult to determine what is/isn't vandalism with this sort of edit, especially when you don't use an edit summary (I'll explain this in detail on your talk page). To answer your question, Wikipedia requires information to be backed up by a reliable source - unfortunately personal experience alone (without any reference to back it up) is not sufficient. Messages among users.

I'm having great difficulty directly addressing other users. I had made amends to the James Holmes page as at least two glaring pieces of misinformation are contained in the Wikipedia article. I amended it...three times. Three times somebody changed it back and I was made to feel in the wrong, despite the article being wrong. Suffice to say if Wikipedia wishes to allow misinformation to stay that's there business, it just diminishes their reputation. My issue is I was unable to address the people directly and still can't. Any help regarding how to message would be appreciated. I'm resorting to this as I cant find an alternative. Thank you. Godabove09 (talk) 07:50, 20 January 2016 (UTC)

This sort of thing is why we have article talk pages. Put your query (and back it up with sources!) on there (talk:James Holmes (mass murderer)) if people keep reverting you - it's likely that some discussion needs to take place to ascertain consensus. Mike1901 (talk) 07:54, 20 January 2016 (UTC)

A link to a piece of misinformation in the medIa doesn't hold up...but fine.

Barbatia photos have wrong name

  • You can now follow when pages are added or removed from a category on German Wikipedia. The plan is to add it to Wikimedia Commons and other Wikipedias this week. [253][254]
  • Administrators can hide individual entries of a page with RevisionDelete. There is now a button to choose "all", "none" or "inverse" in Special:Log. The article history will get the same buttons soon. Wikis that have done this locally with JavaScript will be able to remove that code. [255]

  • You will be able to see the references when you preview a section you are editing. This will happen even if there is no <references /> tag in that section. [256]

  • There is now an extension called ArticlePlaceholder. It can automatically generate content on Wikipedia with data from Wikidata if there is no Wikipedia article. It will have a tag to remind the reader it is not an article and ask the reader to create one. The developer is now looking for smaller Wikipedias that want to try the extension. [257]
  • The OTRS system will be upgraded. The plan is to do this on 3 February at 08:00 (UTC). It will probably take 6 to 8 hours. OTRS will be down during the upgrade. [258]
  • Users will soon be automatically congratulated when they reach some edit count milestones. [259]
