File:ARTnews May 2010.jpg

Hi Mike Peel,

You rejected a deletion request that I placed on an image I uploaded. Your edit summary said "Rejecting {{db-author}} - deletion doesn't appear to have been requested by the author? Best to wait for the non-free content deadline." Did I use the wrong criteria there? I thought that a G7 would do it, though I didn't provide an explanation. I uploaded the image File:ARTnews May 2010.jpg, a cover for the ARTnews magazine. It was recently replaced with a more current cover image (File:ARTnews Cover February 2014.jpg) and eventually flagged for being an orphaned non-free file. I know it's not entirely necessary, but I like to have non-free images that I've uploaded deleted when they aren't being used on articles. It's not a big deal, but please let me know if I should go about deletion differently. Thanks, gobonobo + c 00:42, 26 February 2014 (UTC)

Hi Gobonobo. Looking again, I made a mistake - I thought that Artnews production had uploaded it rather than you, but I see that they uploaded a revised version over the top (and your version was deleted a while ago). That probably means that it still fails G7 as 'provided that the only substantial content to the page [...] was added by its author.' is arguably not the case here due to the new version. It's tagged with {{di-orphaned fair use}} though, which means that if it's still an orphan by 4th March then it will be deleted anyway. I hope that's OK, and apologies for the convolution. BTW, it might be worth contacting ARTnews to ask if they'd be willing to make one of their older covers available under a free license, rather than having to use fair use here. Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 08:51, 26 February 2014 (UTC)
Thank you for clarifying Mike. I had missed that revised version. Thanks for the suggestion too, I'll see if ARTnews can do that. gobonobo + c 21:12, 26 February 2014 (UTC)

Disambiguation link notification for March 2

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Huxley Hoard, you added links pointing to the disambiguation pages Norse, Chevrons and Wirral (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

York edit-a-thon

Hi Mike, Long-time-no-see! How are you? Just wanted to let you know about the York edit-a-thon on March 16th. It would be great if you could join us to help connect some of the science/astronomic history (such as Thomas Cooke (machinist) and maybe help with training new editors. Perhaps a few Manchester Wikipedian's might be tempted to cross the Pennines together!? Either way, I hope to catch you at an event soon! Cheers, PatHadley (talk) 14:47, 6 March 2014 (UTC)

Hi Pat. Sorry, but I've got a family commitment that day. It's not 100% definite yet, so I may be able to make it, but it looks unlikely. I hope it goes well! Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 17:08, 8 March 2014 (UTC)
No worries, hope to see you soon! PatHadley (talk) 20:52, 8 March 2014 (UTC)

Geoportail template

Hello,
I see that you moved this page: Template:OnGoogleEarth, so you clearly know more than I do about templates. I would like to ask around if someone with the know-how would translate this French template; fr:Modèle:Géoportail into its English equivalent. Or could tell me if its equivalent is there already (that map site allows plenty of interesting layers that can be surimposed with each other: Cassini map, hydrology, land surveys maps, geology, several ecologically protected zones types, a.s.o.a.s.o.).
Could you tell me where to ask, please? Thanks you. Cordially, Basicdesign (talk) 13:12, 25 March 2014 (UTC) (sorry, I don't know how to make the text start on the left margin)

Hello. It looks like I recategorised it back in 2007, but I don't think I've moved that template at all... Perhaps ask at Help talk:Template? I haven't done anything with templates here for quite a while now, I'm afraid. :-( Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 12:51, 26 March 2014 (UTC)

Stroopwafels

Hi,

I'm a Stroopwafel dealer that's coming to Manchester and Edinburgh in April. Do you know any registered addicts that might like to get a fix? --1Veertje (talk) 09:46, 31 March 2014 (UTC)

Hi 1Veertje. Mmm, stroopwafels... :-) There aren't any gatherings of Wikimedians planned in Manchester this month, but let me know when you'll be around and I'll ping people to see if they're available? There's a meetup on the 19th April in Liverpool if you can make that - see meta:Meetup/Liverpool/11. Maybe contact Ally Crockford or Brian McNeil about Edinburgh? Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 18:40, 1 April 2014 (UTC) (P.S. how am I not on that addicts list?! now fixed. ;-) )
I'll be in Edinburgh 4-11th of April, then in Manchester 12-14th and then back in Edinburgh 'till the 17th., so I won't be in Liverpool on the 19th. I only have limited space to smuggle stroopwafels since I will only bring a carry-on bag. --1Veertje (talk) 12:08, 2 April 2014 (UTC)
I'm away in Berlin 10th-13th. :-( Would you be around on the evening of the 14th, or are you travelling to Edinburgh then? Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 09:23, 6 April 2014 (UTC)

Liverpool meetup

Hi Mike, so far only you and I have signed up to the Liverpool meetup. I suggest that unless more people sign up, we postpone to another month. What do you think? Bazonka (talk) 08:39, 13 April 2014 (UTC)

Hi Bazonka. Yes, I'd agree - probably best to postpone it unless more people sign up. Is there a geonotice up about it? Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 08:46, 13 April 2014 (UTC)
Yes, there's a notice and it's been up for a while. I reckon we need a minimum of 4 people. Let's give it till Thursday. Bazonka (talk) 19:54, 13 April 2014 (UTC)
OK. It would work better for me if I know in the next day or so whether this is going ahead or not, but I guess waiting until Thursday would be OK. Perhaps for the next meetup (or a rescheduled version of this one) we should put pressure on WMUK to contact local Wikimedia donors to see if they would be interested in attending? Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 22:41, 14 April 2014 (UTC)
RexxS has signed up now. Ideally I'd like there to be at least 4 names (I've been to a meetup before with 3 names on the list and I was the only person who showed up), but since it's you two then I guess there's less risk of no shows. So I reckon we go ahead as planned, unless you think otherwise. Cheers, Bazonka (talk) 19:14, 16 April 2014 (UTC)
And Rodhullandemu as well now. So we'll definitely be going ahead. See you there! Bazonka (talk) 17:45, 17 April 2014 (UTC)
OK, see you there. :-) Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 17:57, 17 April 2014 (UTC)

After worrying that not enough people were going to turn up to the meetup, I'm afraid that I'm not going to be able to make it now. Something has come up that I need to do instead. Sorry about that - hope you have a good time though. Bazonka (talk) 07:15, 19 April 2014 (UTC)

OER inquiry

Hi Mike Peel, I'm sending you this message because you're one of about 300 users who have recently edited an article in the umbrella category of open educational resources (OER) (or open education). In evaluating several projects we've been working on (e.g. the WIKISOO course and WikiProject Open), my colleague Pete Forsyth and I have wondered who chooses to edit OER-related articles and why. Regardless of whether you've taken the WIKISOO course yourself - and/or never even heard the term OER before - we'd be extremely grateful for your participation in this brief, anonymous survey before 27 April. No personal data is being collected. If you have any ideas or questions, please get in touch. My talk page awaits. Thanks for your support! - Sara FB (talk) 20:45, 23 April 2014 (UTC)
