Administrators' newsletter – October 2019

News and updates for administrators from the past month (September 2019).

Guideline and policy news

  • Following a discussion, a new criterion for speedy category renaming was added: C2F: One eponymous article, which applies if the category contains only an eponymous article or media file, provided that the category has not otherwise been emptied shortly before the nomination. The default outcome is an upmerge to the parent categories.

Technical news

  • As previously noted, tighter password requirements for Administrators were put in place last year. Wikipedia should now alert you if your password is less than 10 characters long and thus too short.

Arbitration

Miscellaneous

  • The Community Tech team has been working on a system for temporarily watching pages, and welcomes feedback.

{{commonscat}}

Great work on migrating pages to the correct sub pages, however if the wikipedia and wikimedia page names match, it is better to not add the page name as an argument - aside from being shorter, should the page ever be renamed, it automatically updates the link, which then triggers an alert that the two pages no longer have matching names, in case a page mover forgets to move both pages. - NiD.29 (talk) 00:00, 16 October 2019 (UTC)

@NiD.29: The template uses Wikidata to provide/confirm the correct links to Commons. I'd much prefer to not set the page name as a parameter in the template in general, so that it just uses the sitelink from Wikidata (which automatically updates when Commons categories are moved), but there isn't a consensus on that yet. In most cases I'm using a manually-operated Python script to update the link (a derivative of the script that User:Pi bot automatically runs), so it's easy enough to add the new link, although that may then have to be updated again in the future. When I'm not using the script to correct the link, though, I tend to leave off the parameter. Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 16:50, 16 October 2019 (UTC)
