Technical news

  • Wikimedia previously used the IRC network Freenode. However, due to changes over who controlled the network with reports of a forceful takeover by several ex-staff members, the Wikimedia IRC Group Contacts decided to move to the new Libera Chat network. It has been reported that Wikimedia related channels on Freenode have been forcibly taken over if they pointed members to Libera. There is a migration guide and Wikimedia discussions about this.

DYK for Casa Anchieta

On 12 June 2021, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Casa Anchieta, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that Casa Anchieta in San Cristóbal de La Laguna, Tenerife, was the childhood home of Brazilian missionary Joseph of Anchieta? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Casa Anchieta. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Casa Anchieta), and if they received a combined total of at least 416.7 views per hour (i.e., 5,000 views in 12 hours or 10,000 in 24), the hook may be added to the statistics page. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

DYK for Los Campitos Reservoir

On 13 June 2021, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Los Campitos Reservoir, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that the Los Campitos Reservoir (pictured) in Tenerife has never held water? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Los Campitos Reservoir. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Los Campitos Reservoir), and if they received a combined total of at least 416.7 views per hour (i.e., 5,000 views in 12 hours or 10,000 in 24), the hook may be added to the statistics page. Dhunge dhara/hiti

Hi Mike. I reversed your last edit, because the article is about the dhunge dhara (or hiti) system as a whole. When I first started working on the Commons cats, both categories were already there. So I decided to use "dhunge dhara" for details of the spouts and "hiti" for the basins as a whole, but in reality they are synonymous. It could just as easily have been the other way round. Then I discovered a small Wiki article... --Judithcomm (talk) 20:20, 25 June 2021 (UTC)

@Judithcomm: I moved the enwp sitelink to the other Wikidata item, so the link to Commons is aligned. Perhaps either the Commons categories or the enwp article name should be changed, though? It's oddly inconsistent otherwise. Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 20:34, 25 June 2021 (UTC)
You're right, of course, but that would be a lot of work. I may not get around to it for some time. The article should stay as it is. "Hiti" causes confusion in other languages, "dhunge dhara" does not. --Judithcomm (talk) 19:55, 26 June 2021 (UTC)

Hampshire

this edit if yours puzzles me. The previous category you say is wrong, and the one you say it should be at are both identical, and then why remove the link? Agathoclea (talk) 06:18, 28 June 2021 (UTC)

@Agathoclea: One says "East Hampshire", the other says "Hampshire". Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 06:36, 28 June 2021 (UTC)

Barátok Közt and Jóban Rosszban hungarian tv series

Hello! The Barátok Közt and Jóban Rosszban hungarian tv series are ending in this year, 2021. Barátok Közt ends in July 17, 2021, and Jóban Rosszban ends in Autumn 2021, but it is currently unknown, that ends in September, or October, or November. I can create the 2021 disestablishments in Hungary, the Television series ended in 2021 in Hungary, the Barátok Közt and Jóban Rosszban. I only speak English and Hungarian languages. If you see, that i can later create the 2021 disestablishments in Hungary, and 2021 television series ended in Hungary. --TomFZ67 (talk) 12:35, 2 July 2021 (UTC)

@TomFZ67: I would suggest adding them to Category:2021 television series endings if you don't want to create categories, or if you do want to create categories, go for it. Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 08:03, 3 July 2021 (UTC)

Administrators' newsletter – July 2021

News and updates for administrators from the past month (June 2021).

Guideline and policy news

  • Consensus has been reached to delete all books in the book namespace. There was rough consensus that the deleted books should still be available on request at WP:REFUND even after the namespace is removed.
  • An RfC is open to discuss the next steps following a trial which automatically applied pending changes to TFAs.

Technical news

  • IP addresses of unregistered users are to be hidden from everyone. There is a rough draft of how IP addresses may be shown to users who need to see them. This currently details allowing administrators, checkusers, stewards and those with a new usergroup to view the full IP address of unregistered users. Editors with at least 500 edits and an account over a year old will be able to see all but the end of the IP address in the proposal. The ability to see the IP addresses hidden behind the mask would be dependent on agreeing to not share the parts of the IP address they can see with those who do not have access to the same information. Accessing part of or the full IP address of a masked editor would also be logged. Comments on the draft are being welcomed at the talk page.
