Death of Carole Waugh

Hi Sarah, you were the closing admin at Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/Death_of_Carole_Waugh. I've been contacted today by someone with a personal connection to the victim, who is appalled at our having an article based on press reports that are full of inaccuracies and erroneous speculation [1]. It's a fact of life that press reports on ephemeral cases like this often contain inaccuracies which, due to lack of enduring interest, are never corrected. Now, as I said in my comment on the talk page, by any interpretation of policy this article fails WP:NOT#NEWS by a mile. There is simply no evidence and no likelihood of enduring notability for this murder case (who will talk or write about it in ten years' time?), and the article is causing significant distress. Hey Jayen! Man, I am really regretting ever getting mixed up with this article. I've had another user absolutely blow his lid about the keeping of the article. It was asked that discussion about it be brought up at Wikipedia:WikiProject Crime or the article talk page. I have to be honest, I don't feel comfortable getting that closely mixed up with the article from this point out. It'd probably be best to seek a different admin or something more higher level. I'm really sorry - I have a feeling if I make one decision or another all hell will break lose and I really don't feel comfortable (as a volunteer and as a Wikimedia Foundation Fellow) moving further with this. Hi Sarah, Jayen’s wife here. The person who is suffering from this article being on WP is my friend, too. I’m seeing a lot of “I”s in your reply. How about you forget about your concerns for your Wikimedia career for a minute? Try and imagine what it would feel like if the victim was your sister and you couldn’t bear seeing her remembered this way, awful photograph and all? You assumed responsibility for the article by closing the Afd. Having followed some of the many good things you did for the project, I know you can do better than bow out of this now.   • (talk page stalker) Sarah's due responsibility as an administrator in closing this AFD was done in accordance with policy in determining consensus. If you disagree with the consensus, the option is not to request the closing administrator to disregard consensus. At this point, I think Sarah has spoken her thoughts rather clearly, so I would recommend a review of the Guide to deletion, which provides a review of the policy process.     • AfDs are not decided on numbers; they are not a vote: a closing administrator has to weigh policy-based arguments. WP:NOTNEWSPAPER is fundamental site policy, and applies, in spades. Cindy, you need to understand that an attempt to resolve the situation with the closing admin must precede the initiation any deletion review. I have made more than 40,000 edits here for the past seven years, and I can wikilawyer with the best of them: you may indeed assume that I am well aware of policy. But this is not about wikilawyering; it is about being human. Policy is informed by and represents conscience in this project, and we have to act with conscience, for the benefit of both this project and our fellow human beings.   • You have attempted to resolve the "situation" with Sarah, yet she has not responded in the manner in which you desire. Beating a dead horse here or on the article's talkpage has now gone beyond par. The community has determined in the AFD that the WP:NOTNEWS argument did not hold water in this regard. You have other options here. I'm sure there are thousands of individuals that would prefer to see an article removed from the encyclopedia, but there are also many disappointed people worldwide. I don't consider it wisdom for both you and your wife to essentially brow beat the closing administrator's decision, based on emotional pleas from your friends. Respectfully, it is apparent that there may be a conflict of interest here that you may wish to consider. Again, there are other options available to you. I recommend that you choose one of them. Cindy, I appreciate your loyalty to Sarah, but you and I wouldn't be here if our parents hadn't let their emotions get the better of them at one point in time. Your "dead horse" analogy seems especially cruel in this context. Here's hoping you'll never learn of the death of a loved one via email or google news, and then went on to find a sensationalist article about them on Wikipedia.   • You are right. It was highly insensitive of me to relate this discussion to a "dead horse". Please accept my apologies. As a personal note, I actually learned of the suicide of a sibling in a phone call and the murder-suicide of an uncle in an email. In a separate incidence, when my sister was murdered, it was reported in regional and statewide news that I was actually the one that died, rather than my sister. My closest friends mourned my death and it took heaven and earth to get the news media and law officials to correct their mistake. In professional interviews I have given, I have been misquoted and misrepresented in newspaper articles that have been picked up and repeated in international news without retraction. I have personally experienced all sides. (My book is forthcoming.) In regards to my personal emotions, they are not dependent on my parents. Human decency is defined and governed by community standards. I am able to separate my personal feelings and professional expertise from the guidelines and policies that govern our community. In doing so, I am able to carry out responsibilities in an objective manner. When colleagues have asked for my assistance in creating or deleting an article, my first question is one of notability and sourcing to support the same. Outside of that, my personal emotions matter little. I have to question when others disregard consensus (which does not equate to a vote), claiming a loyalty to a friend in an effort to alleviate suffering that an article on Wikipedia brings. At this point, there is an option to review any information that may conflict with that presented in the article. Once this information is made public, we can review independent and reliable sources that may provide balance to any outstanding questions, then add that new information to the article, while retaining or dismissing the current content. Other options include WP:DRV or a second AFD. There are constructive alternatives available, that none seem to have considered. We need to refocus. My loyalty lays not with Sarah, but with the community. We have a deletion process for a reason. The approach with Sarah has made. I simply recommend following the process to the next logical step. In all though, I sincerely apologize for equating the discussion to a dead horse. Thanks for calling me out on that. Your admonition here is not one I will soon forget. Hi everyone. My emails are blowing up with MediaWiki pings from this thread. I certainly understand how Draco and Jayron feel, but I disagree that the closure of the AfD gives me responsibility over the article. As an administrator, my role there was to read the consensus of the community involved in the discussion, and I think I discharged that duty. If your first question is one of notability, then delete. There is no notability here, just a tragic death of an ordinary person, blown up out of all proportion by tabloid speculation (Libya, oil millionairess). Obviously the tabloid writers have to earn a living by exaggeration, but this is supposed to be an encyclopedia. Not that it really is, of course. I am the person who got upset by this article. Carole was an old friend who I lost touch with a few years ago and I was very shocked to see this ghoulish article. She was not a 'millionairess' nor a 'businesswoman' and these touches have been added to give a patina of notability. She was just a secretary on a modest income whose late partner left her a little money to buy a flat in London. Including the photo is especially unkind - it was issued by the police for identifying a missing person - I don't believe it should have been uploaded to Wikipedia. If you had any human decency, you would remove that. As for the deletion process, I looked at the page and I see a small number of votes to keep, most of them from a small coterie of editors devoted to turning Wikipedia into 'Sensational crime daily' or 'True detective' or whatever. This is just a sad story of someone who was dear to a few people, including me, who was robbed violently. I don't understand what 'discussion' you are referring to. There was a small group of ghoulish people determined to play at being crime journalists. This is wholly inappropriate for an 'encyclopedia'. I notice that the article has changed now - the photo has been removed, confirming my view that it was not fairly used. Some of the speculative material has been removed. Why as an administrator did you not question these problems in the first place? What actually is the point of being an administrator? Hi Sarah. I don't know if the reference here to a user "blowing their top" is to me, but if so, that is slightly uncalled for. Yes I pushed on this issue at the original AFD, but that's because it seemed so obvious to me (so obvious that I originally simply prodded the article for deletion when I first saw it; but the creator objected and forced us to AFD) - but when I queried your decision at that AFD here, I was extremely apologetic about coming to your talk page and bothering you for clarification, and very explicit that I was simply trying to understand your reasoning - because you gave none - rather than berating you. I then left one, equally calm and explanatory follow-up response. I know it's hard for a reviewing admin to overrule what appears to be a vote in favour of something, even if AFD discussions are not meant to be such. The problem is with the system more generally, where the right decision can effectively be vetoed if enough people (often as few as 2 or 3 people in a small debate) insist on the status quo. It seems at least now that we're going to get back to where we should have been on pure policy grounds, after many hours wasted on all sides, and needless upset caused to people familiar with the victim. Teahouse talk

Hi Sarah. I've been asked to give a talk to a group of librarians in a couple of weeks about Wikipedia, with a particular emphasis on how to get involved. The organiser has asked me to raise the Teahouse, so I thought I'd check with you if there was anything in particular you normally cover in regard to the Teahouse that I should make sure to mention. :) It should be a good opportunity - they've already asked about meetups, so it is looking really promising, and I suspect they would be great contributors. - Bilby (talk) 01:30, 5 September 2012 (UTC)

Hey Bilby! There really isn't much that I share that is out of the ordinary - depending on the audience, I might explain why the project formed (after presenting my research about why women edit Wikipedia, the community and I discussed ideas to create a more friendly and engaging help space...and voila!), and how it has been a proven success (33% recention, 28% women participants). But, if we aren't trying to inform people about the research and reasoning behind the Teahouse, I'd just encourage them to use the space, and after you speak to them and if they create user names, get their accounts and we can all welcome them and invite them to the Teahouse. Or even give them an assignment to ask a question (no matter how stupid) at the Teahouse or make a profile. I think it's a good starting point. If there is anything on your mind, I'm happy to break things down further with you if you'd like (or give a review of your presentation ;D) That's a great opportunity. OH! On a related note: I'll be at Linux.con.au in Canberra talking about the Teahouse - in late January early Feb - think you'll be around? I'll also be spending some time in Sydney! That all sounds great. :) In this case, the focus is on how to get involved in WP, so I'll raise the Teahouse and do exactly as you suggest about getting them to use the Teahouse early. As this talk is mostly about editing, I'll probably give a variation of the "How WP works" with more of a focus on practical stuff, and bring up the Teahouse as part of the process of getting started. This one is a bit unusual - most of these for me are an hour of presentation and about 30 minutes of questions, but they prefer 30 minutes of presentation and an hour of questions. :) Which is neat. The great part of this group is the focus on becoming editors that they asked for. I have another talk for a different group coming up a couple of weeks later, but they're more focused on what WP is than how to be editors.
I'd love to go to Linux.con.au and say hello - I'll have to see if the uni agrees and will fund the trip. :) Canberra is a bit of a drive, but if I can do it via Broken Hill I'll be able to vist some of the big things that I haven't made it to yet, which will make it doubly worthwhile. - Bilby (talk) 00:31, 6 September 2012 (UTC)

In March, you were away, and with your catching up from your many messages here, I was not sure if you saw my apology of March 8th regarding the spam conflict between you and me before your bot archived it a day or few days after the initial post. Hi, Sarah! I wanted you to know that the Barnstar you gave me way back when was part of the reason I have stuck with Wikipedia. If you would, I'd appreciate an honest critique of the last two things I did at teaahouse before signing on to be a host. One was the reply I gave to DEIDRA C at Teahouse (Wikipedia:Teahouse/Questions#I don't understand.). The other was a reply I made on the talkpage of an obvious WP:SPA, User talk:Adecoratingmom. I want to do the best job I can at Teahouse cause I think this kind of thing is my Wikiniche, if you will. I am not much for writing articles, although I can refine ones already written. Thanks! Hi! Awe, that means a lot to me - about the barnstar, etc. That really does :) I have taken a look at what you wanted me to review, and honestly - there isn't much to review! You truly are a great lead in the Teahouse "movement" of help - clear and respectful answers that don't make those you are helping feel stupid (at least, it reads to me like that!) but it explains things simply and clear. I also like the use of bullets :) (re: the SPA case) so I'm bias. I'm glad the Teahouse has been able to provide a space for you to feel productive and a part of this - everyone has their "niche" and perhaps it will strike you someday to write more article content - but every type of person is needed at Wikipedia. I do everything from help people, review articles, do disambiguations and so forth! Backstage at the Smithsonian Libraries is part of Wikipedia Loves Libraries 2012, the second annual continent-wide campaign to bring Wikipedia and libraries together with on-site events. Running this fall through October and November, libraries (and archives) will open their doors to help build a lasting relationship with their local Wikipedian community.

Organized by Wikimedia DC, this event will take place on October 12, 2012, and will include new editor training, a "backstage pass" tour of the National Museum of Natural History, and an edit-a-thon. Everyone is welcome to attend!

Hi GLAM PMA folks! I wanted to update you about some recent events related to our fantastic Museum. I met Jessica Milby, PMA Collections Information Project Manager, at Wikimania in July. Jessica was looking for ways to improve articles on Wikipedia about the Museum and its artists/collections. We followed up a few weeks later at the Perelman Building in downtown Philadelphia where we discussed ways to increase participation in the GLAM/PMA project.

  • The first idea is to do some outreach to the GLAM:PMA project members, including mass messages updating you all about plans and, seeking feedback about new ideas, and hearing your thoughts about what's in the works.
  • The next step is a drive to improve the main Philadelphia Museum of Art article. The article is currently 'B-Class', but Jessica was confident that with the abundance of high quality sources about the Museum that it could be improved even further. Jessica recommended this extensive source from the Museum's website.
  • Another idea that came out of the meeting was a project within the Museum to assess which PMA-related topics are missing articles on Wikipedia.
  • One of Jessica's ideas is to have the knowledgeable curators of the Museum provide recommended reading lists for PMA-related articles. That should be a great first step to guiding editors towards the information they need to expand and improve that content.
  • Also raised for discussion were some ideas about how to engage the broader community. There is interest in setting up a tour/edit-a-thon, but this remains in the preliminary stage. Would you be interested in participating in such an event?
  • We have new stats! These 24 articles are all under the PMA project. I compiled the last 90-day page views and then annualized the results. PMA-related articles get almost 800,000 view per year!

I've been in the Teahouse and dalahäst answer my comment: Hey, and thanks for stopping in at the Teahouse. It looks like your article was rejected because it doesn't have enough reliable sources. I'm guessing the reviewer noticed that some of the sources you have listed are primary sources, like the company's Amazon page. They may have also had a problem verifying some of the sources; I noticed that one is in Spanish (which I can read, but not everyone can) and another requires a subscription to access, which you should note in the references; we have a template for that called (subscription required). Try fixing those things, or explaining them more to the reviewer (their talk page would be a good place). Then they can tell you what the problems they found were more specifically. TO SarahStierch: In Aug 2012 I aubmitted an article "Joseph J Katz." He was a famous scientist at Argonne National Laboratory (USA). I knew him well. I interviewed colleages and his wife, but used only citable sources in my article. On Aug 15 the article was rejected by Aaron Booth with comments by you. I modified it on Aug 16 with an intro paragraph and more references. Having not received notice of acceptance, I wrote to Aaron Booth this month. No action. Please reconsider my Aug 16 submission. Adopt-a-user just got shinier!

Hi Sarah. User:Worm That Turned and I have recently been giving the old Adopt-a-user program something of an overhaul; largely inspired, I might add, by the Teahouse project! In the interests of making the adoption scheme more prominent, we were hoping to perhaps enter into some sort of mutual arrangement with the Teahouse; many of the editors asking questions there are those who would benefit most from adoption. Worm has suggested that teahouse guests be directed to adoption if they seem to have multiple or very complex questions (something like, "Your third question today? Here's the answer, and by the way, have you considered adoption?"); this would reduce the load on Teahouse hosts and ensure that new users who wanted to get an in-depth experience of Wikipedia were able to dive in under the auspices of an experienced mentor.

I'd be really interested to hear your thoughts, both on the AaU redesign and on the prospect of the two projects working more closely together. Drop me a line and let me know what you think. Cheers, Yunshui  08:49, 24 September 2012 (UTC)

Overseas Research Scholarship

Hi Sarah,

I'm somewhat confused regarding primary/secondary sources in my recent article Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/Overseas Research Scholarship which you've reviewed. You suggested that my sources were primarily primary rather than secondary sources, but 3 out of the 4 sources were from University of Warwick, University College London and an independent consultancy firm. Since they not related to the agency that runs the scholarship, are these sources not secondary? Anyway, I've added some new sources, including one from the British Council.

List of language translators in fiction

I have a question: on the original page in French (of which I'm also the proud mother), there also is a non-fiction section, mainly memoirs and biographies. Should I also add it to the en.wiki page even if it's non-fiction? It might be useful for people who research to topic and are looking for books in general about interpreters and the profession.

Smithsonian question

Hello Sarah. How's it going. I've a question related to the Smithsonian and their copyright on items in their collection. In our article Mary Vaux Walcott we have an image (File:Mary Vaux Walcott.jpg]) that is from the S.I. archives. It has a date of creation (1914), but no publication date and an unknown author. We're discussing it over at Commons: Commons:Commons:Village pump/Copyright#Smithsonian image. Thought if anyone might know about this, it would be you. Take a look if you've got time.   • Thanks Sarah for the quick response. One of the Commons users is still questioning the tag we currently have it under. I think the sticking point is that for the 1923 statute to apply, there needs to be evidence of publication before that date. They seem to think an OTRS ticket is still needed. Once we get this figured out, we should try to get Mary Vaux Walcott up to GA. I've found quite a bit of material on her Canadian adventures. This book (This Wild Spirit: Women in the Rocky Mountains of Canada) is a great resource for ladies in the Canadian mountains, maybe keep it in mind for one of your women's editing drives. I have updated the license to "no known copyright," with the custom template that was created for the SIA project by the Commons community. This should cover it. I assure you, SIA would not release an image if they weren't comfortable with this. If someone is interested in obtaining OTRS they can email Effie Kapsalis at KapsalisE at si.edu - but, the no known copyright template should be good enough. Edit count requirement...

At The teahouse. What about an adminship-like vote? No one's going to let someone in as a host without enough experience that way and there'll be enough negative votes to make sure of it?
