Article on retired pro basketball player Ryan Wetzel[edit]

Hi

I am seeking assistance on referencing subject "Ryan Wetzel" in the hopes that his article be successful when submitting. Can you please help me reference properly. All of his reference sources are below on the new and advised bottom part of the page. The information in the wiki article are found primarily on the websites 'fanbase' and facebook(in the bio album).

It denied me because of my lack in reference. All the information pertaining to the article are there I need help putting the ref numbers next to the proper areas.

Ryan Wetzel[edit]

Ryan Wetzel (born August 27, 1980) is a former American professional basketball player. His professional career started when he entered the 2006 Continental Basketball Association draft. Wetzel, a Blackfeet Native American, is most remembered for his high flying dunk career in junior high and high school. He is known to most as the "Montana Slam Dunk Legend."

Early years[edit]

Saint Francis Upper[edit]

By the age of 12 years old he began slam dunking a volleyball on a 10 ft hoop. As soon as he reached 14 years old he stood 6'1 and had a 36 inch vertical. The combo gave him the ability to complete a 360 slam dunk by 8th grade. The skills and size would produce one of Montana's most athletic talents ever.

Through out his 8th grade season, Ryan averaged 35 points, 16 rebounds, 7 blocks, and 5 steals per game. He also had around 60 slammed dunks in his 15 game season for Saint Francis Upper school. Ryan led his team in the state championship game by scoring 50 points and grabbing 26 rebounds. He ended the 3 game parochial grade school state tournament averaging 42 points and 23 rebounds per game.

Billings Central Catholic High School[edit]

Wetzel attended Billings Central Catholic High School in Billings, Montana. He lettered four years straight in basketball, one year in football, and three years in track and field. In basketball, he was a dominating forward/guard who had a career that consisted of high flying jams, jumpers, rebounds, and blocks. Throughout his four year high school basketball career, Ryan was involved in 6 championship games ranging from conference, divisional, and state titles.

Ryan was also an all conference wide receiver and letter man in football his senior year. In track and field, he placed first in high jump his senior year at the divisional track meet. He also placed in the long jump. That year the Billings Central Boys Track and Field team would win the divisional and state title.

College career[edit]

Northwest College[edit]

Wetzel would attend Northwest College in Powell, Wyoming an NJCAA Division I basketball program. He played for Hall of Fame coach Ken Rochlitz. Ryan evolved into a scoring machine as well as a slam dunk specialist his two season's for the Trappers. One of his most outstanding games came at the year end tournament. His onslaught of dunks, jumpers, and three point bombs, 11 to be exact, ended the night with a staggering 47 points versus Black Hills State University. This single game performance was the greatest of his college career. After two solid season's Ryan produced over 500 points and 200 rebounds for the Trappers.

Montana State University Billings[edit]

After Northwest, Wetzel would sign with NCAA Division II Montana State University Billings. That year the Yellowjackets ranked 23rd in the nation going into the 2002-03 season. With big expectations Ryan would compete at a high level during pre-season workouts. Coach Craig Carse felt that he had the potential of being a great player for the program. Unfortunately, his dreams of being a standout for the Yellowjackets were cut short. After four games with limited minutes his chronic leg injury would affect his play so much that it caused him to take a medical red shirt for the rest of the season. He never made it back to the floor for the Yellowjackets again due to compartment syndrome. By his junior season his college career was over.

Professional career[edit]

United States[edit]

In 2006, after much support from family and friends, Ryan made his way back onto the court and began playing at a high level. First competing at the National Indian Athletic Association tournament held in Hollywood, Florida. He led his team to a second place finish and received All-Star honors. Later that year Ryan was invited to tryout with the Continental Basketball Association Great Falls Explores and Butte Dare Devils. He was never offered a contract.

As a free agent, Ryan competed in numerous basketball tournaments around the country hoping to be noticed by a professional scout. He was. In 2008 Ryan was contacted by the Montana/Wyoming Tribal Leaders Council. They wanted him to be a part of the All Montana Native American Men's National Team. He took the offer and made the team. His career high with the TLC National team was 22 points 9 rebounds. He hit six 3 point baskets in that game. Ryan stayed with the team for 1 year before taking his basketball career to Europe.

Germany[edit]

In 2009 Ryan's professional basketball career continued when he was invited to workout with Pro A teams in Germany. First, Ryan played a few preseason games with UBC Tigers in Hannover, Germany. His career best was a game high of 15 points to go along with 8 rebounds, 3 steals and 1 blocked shot. He stayed with the team for a short period after before being released. Ryan then went on to workout with the TV Langen Giraffes of Langen, Hesse Germany and the Giessen 46ers of Giessen, Germany but was never offered a contract. He had other opportunities to play in Germany but he felt it was time for a change and hang up the shoes. Upon his return to the states, Ryan retired from professional basketball.

Present Day[edit]

Now, Ryan Wetzel is a supporter as well as a promoter for high school basketball in Montana. His involvement consists of coaching basketball at the local high school as well as personal training. He is also involved in prevention work and youth mentoring programs throughout Western Montana. He also has a degree in Psychology from the University of Montana.
