Notes

[edit]

Hi! I wanted to give you a few notes - I edited the article Keeanga-Yamahtta Taylor and removed some things and wanted to explain why.

  • I removed the sections on teaching experience and grants/awards for a few reasons. The first is that there were no independent, reliable sources to show where this content was really notable enough to highlight in this amount of detail. The second is that this type of detail is more seen on a curriculum vitae and as such, actually comes across as promotional.
  • I also removed the in-depth coverage of her newspaper articles. In general Wikipedia only gives a general overview of a person's work, especially when it comes to newspaper and journal work. The reason for this is that it's expected that a journalist/writer will publish in these areas and publish frequently, so individual articles should only be highlighted if there is a lot of independent, reliable sources that cover these specific pieces. Even articles on very well known journalists and news persons give only a very general overview of their work. To a lesser degree books fall under this banner as well. It's OK to go into detail with authors who have only published 2-4 works, but anything over that should likely be summarized into a basic overview of their work and accompanied by a list bibliography akin to the selected publications section in the article. I've left this as is for the time being since there are only six books and it could honestly go either way.
  • The activism section needs to be summarized into a few paragraphs. Like the newspaper section, it's assumed (and hoped!) that an activist will be highly active and participate in several events each year, so a general summary is best. Another reason to summarize something like this especially is that a general overview can give the reader a better idea of what the person does, what they stand for and hope to protect or raise awareness for, and what they've experienced as an effect of their activist. A list can't really get this across as well and doesn't really get the information across as well in most scenarios.

Other than that, my other main note would be to make sure and use as many independent, reliable sources as possible to help back up claims. Shalor (Wiki Ed) (talk) 18:48, 13 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
