The first figure is useful but perpetuates a common mistake that the dominant wavelength of a topographic load is simply the width of the load. The load that is shown has near vertical boundaries, and, as a consequence, the load has significant components at all wavelengths. This example would be more accurate if the schematic load were sinusoidal. Then the load would have all of its variance at one wavelength.
