Block message:

{{checkuserblock}}

Decline reason: See below. Hersfold (t/a/c) 05:37, 3 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I'm contacting the blocking administrator. Sorry, but due to the nature of the block, it probably will not be lifted, however depending on the circumstances, we may be able to give you an exemption from the block. Hersfold (t/a/c) 05:11, 3 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Can I please receive an explanation of the block? I have not made any edits from this account (either user name or IP address) in ages, so I'm not sure what sort of abuse is alleged to have occurred from this IP address. When I tried to search for contributions made from this IP address, the results were zero, so I suspect I've either been caught in a block of a zone of IP addresses, or there's some sort of error. Thanks. Murmel (talk) 05:27, 3 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Apparently (this is what I've gathered from discussing with another checkuser, User:East718, on IRC) you've been caught up in a block from one of our most prolific vandals, User:Grawp. As such, we will not lift the block on your IP address. However, it is possible to allow you to edit anyway. I've been reviewing the actions on your account, and it looks like you've been away for a very long time. Could you explain the reason for your absence? This is a security thing, to ensure your account hasn't been compromised, please understand. Hersfold (t/a/c) 05:37, 3 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Update here... East actually isn't a checkuser, my mistake, but I have a better way to work this out. If you could, please, email unblock-en-l AT lists DOT wikimedia DOT org with an email address from Verizon. East will be looking for that email, and once it's received, he will grant you an exemption from this block. Please be sure to link to this page when sending the email. Sorry again for the paranoia, but this vandal's been causing a lot of trouble lately. Thanks for your patience. Hersfold (t/a/c) 05:46, 3 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Unlikely to be Grawp. Thatcher 11:43, 3 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I have granted your account an exemption from IP blocking. This will allow you to edit through full blocks affecting your IP address when you are logged in.

Please read the page Wikipedia:IP block exemption carefully, especially the section on IP block exemption conditions.

Note in particular that you are not permitted to use this newly-granted right to edit Wikipedia via anonymous proxies, or disruptively. If you do, or there is a serious concern of abuse, then the right may be removed by any administrator.

I hope this will enhance your editing, and allow you to edit successfully and without disruption. Thatcher 11:43, 3 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks everyone for the explanations and help on this. The absence has just been due to real life getting in the way and not having had the time to peruse things in an editing frame of mind. I appreciate the explanations and help. Murmel (talk) 05:47, 9 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
