Counter-Vandalism Academy

Hi, Music1201!

I've noticed that you've added your name to the list of trainers for the Counter-Vandalism Academy. That's great news! I'm been looking for someone to possibly endorse a request for rollback because I wasn't successful last time and have been advised to come this way. Would you be kind enough to please enroll me in your training... if you're up to the challenge? Thank you so much!

Best, <<< SOME GADGET GEEK >>> (talk) 00:42, 16 May 2016 (UTC)

@Some Gadget Geek: Absolutely! Your academy page has been created at User:Music1201/CVUA/Some Gadget Geek. Music1201 talk 00:51, 16 May 2016 (UTC)

Vandalism academy

Hi,

I saw that you are one of the only two counter-vandalism trainers and the one who has less students. Would you be willing to enroll me? Thank you for the time.

Well, you want to know what I think? I think you're a stuck-up brat. I didn't do anything wrong to any page I've ever edited. I didn't delete anything. I added overall summaries and personal reviews. There isn't anything wrong with that! You just think you're better than me, maybe because I'm a newbie. But you're not better than me. We're all equal. I hope this helps you improve your behavior! I know my stuff. -Historical2046 — Preceding unsigned comment added by Historical2046 (talkcontribs) 23:10, 23 May 2016 (UTC)

@Historical2046: If you are talking about the warning template I left on your user talk page, I recommend you read Wikipedia:OPINION. I was simply notifying your that your edit was reverted. Let me know if I can help! Music1201 talk 23:25, 23 May 2016 (UTC)

Hank Green's atheism

Hey thanks for the tip about citing my sources! I'm very new to Wikipedia so I appreciate the help. So I have a podcast where Hank Green says he is atheist, and I thought this would be good information to include because on John Green's page, his religion is stated. I don't know how to cite a podcast however. Here is the source, where Hank speaks of his atheism. https://soundcloud.com/earbiscuits/ep-48-hank-green-ear-biscuits

I was watching "The Newsroom" and it had a conversation between characters about Wikipedia and how the living person who the article is about cannot contribute information to it, but that may be false. In my opinion, Hank calling himself an atheist is a pretty good first-hand source, but I may be wrong. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 47.32.92.10 (talk) 02:27, 24 May 2016 (UTC)

Closure of AfD discussions

Hello, Music! I notice that you have been active as a non-admin at AfD discussions. Your work such as relisting is helpful. However, I would suggest that you need to be more cautious about actually closing discussions. Your closure here was improper for a non-administrator to do, and was reverted by another non-administrator. It was improper because it was debatable, not an obvious outcome. After two relistings the article had only one comment, a "delete" !vote. You closed it as "no consensus," but that was not a straightforward or obvious result, Many, perhaps most of us, would have closed it as "delete" or WP:Soft delete; the rest would have closed it as "No consensus WP:NPASR". Non-administrators are supposed to restrict themselves to non-controversial closes, such as obvious "keep" or "merge" results; see WP:NAC. You in particular have not been participating at AfD for very long, and your track record does not suggest a strong understanding of deletion criteria. I'd encourage you to keep working in the area, participating in discussions, learning what criteria people are using, and studying how consensus is being evaluated by the closers. You could keep on relisting when it is called for, but maybe not try any more NAC closures for a while. Don't be discouraged; your desire to help is commendable; it's just that your "apprenticeship" in this area may need more time. --MelanieN (talk) 18:50, 28 May 2016 (UTC)

@MelanieN: I haven't closed an AfD in several weeks. Also, please see my AfDStats. The link you provided does not seem to be working correctly (it's changing some results). Music1201 talk 19:06, 28 May 2016 (UTC)
I'm glad you are being cautious about it. Yes, I did see those AfD stats also; I chose to concentrate on the articles you nominated for deletion yourself, since those are more likely to show an understanding of actual policy. (It's awfully easy to add another "delete, not notable" !vote to discussions that already have several such !votes.) Anyhow, I don't mean to discourage you. AfD is an important and valuable area to work in. AfD is the area that eventually led me to apply for adminship, and it's one of the areas I am still most active in. I'm glad you have an interest there, and I encourage you to continue participating. BTW here's something you might want to try: one very fulfilling thing to do at AfD is to "rescue" an article - improve it, add sources, and persuade people to keep it. That was always one of my favorite things to do at AfD, and I proudly maintain a list of some of the articles I "rescued" in that way. The opportunity doesn't come up very often - most AfD nominated articles are fully deserving of being deleted - but it's very satisfying when it does so you might keep an eye out for that kind of opportunity. --MelanieN (talk) 19:38, 28 May 2016 (UTC)

University City (Charlotte Neighborhood)

Dear Music1201,

Thank you for looking at the University City (Charlotte area) webpage. I have been trying to follow the Wikipedia rules; this is my first time doing anything on wikipedia, so I apologize if I am messing up. You indicated I was vandalizing the page, and I'm not sure why or how to correct it. The section in question had to do with schools located in University City. Since the original page was put up, numerous schools have opened in University City. It would be impossible to accurately maintain a list of those schools - and not really what University City is about. Please help me to understand your warning and how I should (correctly) delete outdated or irrelevant information. I did a search for "deleting sections" but all I can find is that you should request edits. I appreciate your review. Thank you. University City Partners (talk) 22:05, 30 May 2016 (UTC)University City Partners

@University City Partners: Welcome to Wikipedia! Your edits were not vandalism (I assume they are in good faith). I reverted the edits because you made an edit request in the article instead of on the talk page. I would also like to make you aware that your username appears to be promotional along with your edits. Music1201 talk 22:08, 30 May 2016 (UTC)
@Music1201: (Hope I did that right). I am a real person. University City Partners is the municipal services district that is responsible for University City Partners. We are not sure who or when the wikipedia page was created but the information currently on it is outdated and/or inaccurate, so I was tasked with fixing it. Bonadea told me to do Edit Request since that is considered a conflict of interest. I didn't know I should use my actual name as a user name. Face/palm. So, if I understand correctly, I should start a talk page and put the Edit Request there instead of editing the page directly? Thank you for your time - I know you are a volunteer and dont have to be doing this on a Monday afternoon. :) University City Partners (talk) 22:18, 30 May 2016 (UTC)University City Partners
@University City Panthers: Someone tagged your edit as a conflict of interest, and you removed the tag and made an edit request. Music1201 talk 22:30, 30 May 2016 (UTC)

Counter Vandalism Unit Application

Hello, Music1201. My name is Redolta, and I have been an active Wikipedia contributor since March 2016 (although I did create my account in November 2015). I have recently been patrolling pages since late April, and so far I think I have done decent. I recently looked at the CVU unit, and so far I am interested in applying. I have done over 200 edits (272 total edits, to be exact) since I registered my account in 2015. My proclivity for fighting vandalism certainly pays off in the future for having good faith. I would be glad for you to give the opportunity for me to be in this Counter-Vandalism Unit Training. Hope you consider this (trust me, you'll won't regret your decision), thank you, and have a nice day. Redolta (talk) 15:44, 30 May 2016 (UTC)

Welcome to Wikipedia Redolta! You currently have only 93 mainspace edits, please re-apply once you have 200. You can see how many mainspace edits you have using this link. Music1201 talk 22:47, 30 May 2016 (UTC)

Counter Vandalism Training

Hi! I'm Samuel.farrell31 and I am fairly new to Wikipedia, I was wondering if you can help me learn the basics of being a great counter-vandalism editor. Also, does it cost money? Thanks! Samuel.farrell31 (talk) 23:32, 29 May 2016 (UTC)

2016 Wikimedia Foundation Executive Director Search Community Survey

The Board of Trustees of the Wikimedia Foundation has appointed a committee to lead the search for the foundation’s next Executive Director. One of our first tasks is to write the job description of the executive director position, and we are asking for input from the Wikimedia community. Please take a few minutes and complete this survey to help us better understand community and staff expectations for the Wikimedia Foundation Executive Director.

Thank you, The Wikimedia Foundation Executive Director Search Steering Committee via MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 21:48, 1 June 2016 (UTC)

You closed this as "no consensus to move". I think that was incorrect, reflecting a vote count rather than the weight of policy-based argument. The Google Search evidence presented in the move request showed that without doubt the form "Zamfara State" is much more common than "Zamfara" alone. Two editors agreed based on their experience and further checks. One editor said the evidence was "cherry-picked", but did not respond to the comment that the evidence was simply the first page of Google News results and the first page of Google Books results. The editor who had made the bold move from "Zamfara State" to "Zamfara", and various similar moves, voted against the move back but did not present any evidence.

35 of the 36 Nigerian state articles are now back to the standard Nigerian "XYZ State" form of title. Zamfara alone has the US-style "XYZ" form. The solution is to revert to the long-standing "Zamfara State" title. If the editor who made the original bold moves is still sure they are justified they may formally propose them for discussion. This is to ask you to change the closure so we can avoid going through the Wikipedia:Move review process. This set of bold moves to US-style names has caused far too much wasted effort already. Thanks, Aymatth2 (talk) 22:43, 1 June 2016 (UTC)

@Aymatth2:  Done. I have reverted the closure although I believe the next person to close will also close as no consensus. I definitely gave the most weight to the 2nd "Oppose" !vote because a move prior to the RM took place without a discussion (see the move log). Music1201 talk 22:49, 1 June 2016 (UTC)
  • Thank you for that. The second "Oppose" vote was from the editor who boldly made the original move without discussion. I cannot imagine moving an article on a US state to Nigerian-style naming without discussion. Aymatth2 (talk) 00:19, 2 June 2016 (UTC)

Woman walking

Which could just as well be the name of the page, lower cased of course ("woman walking"). Can you please revert your close at the Woman Suffrage Procession page. I'd asked for an admin to close this one, and would again say that the present descriptive name looks odd in the first sentence of the page when a reasonable name used in both popular culture and as a Wikipedia Picture of the Day is available and is the official name of the event. If you read each comment you'll see that the reasoning for keeping the lower-cased name is faulty, and one support vote even wonders if the wording is odd (well, yes, it is). Consensus is not a head count, it's a reasoned process. With a guideline saying use the official name if possible, and with the Wikipedia Picture of the Day and the use in the movie about the event, you'll see that Woman Suffrage Procession was chosen by the parade's organizers as a elevation of the event, an event which turned out to be a major milestone in both the history of suffrage and of the use of nonviolence in social movements in the United States. Have you seen the film, and if not, I can "hook you up" with a youtube vid (I know a guy). Thanks. Randy Kryn 13:39, 2 June 2016 (UTC)

Done. Music1201 talk 20:42, 2 June 2016 (UTC)
Thanks. Still worried that someone will close it to this odd name, and if so how long before I can put up a new RM? Would like to do a new one at manifest as time goes by, and at the Montgomery bus boycott. How long is enough? I have no idea. Have you seen the film 'Iron-Jawed Angels'? Very good, and really let's people know what women had to do just the get the vote in most of the United States. 2020, the hundredth year anniversary, Alice Paul will be on the back of America's ten-dollar bill! (probably really worth about 75 cents by that time). She was really a heroine of nonviolence in America, and she overlapped into the Civil Rights Movement. She did nice work.
