Garhi Pukhta

Hello MusikAnimal, you blocked Gundappa swami recently. The page he was editing continuously was Garhi Pukhta. I have already reverted his changes twice today and owing to WP:3RR I am not sure if I should revert it again. Can you please restore the page into last meaningful state? Thanks, Arun Kumar SINGH (Talk) 18:08, 17 December 2015 (UTC)

Your protection on Park Forest, Dallas

Protection has ended, and another sock User:2605:6001:e2d3:d100:c4b3:5708:815e:376f is back. You blocked User:Iconoclasttx2 as a sock, but I don't see a case. I assume it was Novanlord? Meters (talk) 23:09, 17 December 2015 (UTC)

Yes User:Iconoclasttx2 has made identical edits to the same pages as User:Novanlord, so they were blocked per WP:DUCK. I've semi'd the page again to prevent disruption. Thanks for the report MusikAnimal talk 02:29, 18 December 2015 (UTC)

VisualEditor News #6—2015

Did you know?

A new, simpler system for editing will offer a single Edit button. Once the page has opened, you can switch back and forth between visual and wikitext editing.

Screenshot showing a pop-up dialog for switching from the wikitext editor to VisualEditor
If you prefer having separate edit buttons, then you can set that option in your preferences, either in a pop-up dialog the next time you open the visual editor, or by going to Special:Preferences and choosing the setting that you want:
Screenshot showing a drop-down menu in Special:Preferences

The current plan is for the default setting to have the Edit button open the editing environment you used most recently.

You can read and help translate the user guide, which has more information about how to use the visual editor.

Since the last newsletter, the VisualEditor Team has fixed many bugs and expanded the mathematics formula tool. Their workboard is available in Phabricator. Their current priorities are improving support for languages such as Japanese and Arabic, and providing rich-media tools for formulæ, charts, galleries and uploading.

Recent improvements

You can switch from the wikitext editor to the visual editor after you start editing.

The LaTeX mathematics formula editor has been significantly expanded. (T118616) You can see the formula as you change the LaTeX code. You can click buttons to insert the correct LaTeX code for many symbols.

Future changes

The single edit tab project will combine the "Edit" and "Edit source" tabs into a single "Edit" tab, like the system already used on the mobile website. (T102398) Initially, the "Edit" tab will open whichever editing environment you used last time. Your last editing choice will be stored as a cookie for logged-out users and as an account preference for logged-in editors. Logged-in editors will be able to set a default editor in the Editing tab of Special:Preferences in the drop-down menu about "Editing mode:".

The visual editor will be offered to all editors at the following Wikipedias in early 2016: Amharic, Buginese, Min Dong, Cree, Manx, Hakka, Armenian, Georgian, Pontic, Serbo-Croatian, Tigrinya, Mingrelian, Zhuang, and Min Nan. (T116523) Please post your comments and the language(s) that you tested at the feedback thread on mediawiki.org. The developers would like to know how well it works. Please tell them what kind of computer, web browser, and keyboard you are using.

In 2016, the feedback pages for the visual editor on many Wikipedias will be redirected to mediawiki.org. (T92661)

Testing opportunities

  • Please try the new system for the single edit tab on test2.wikipedia.org. You can edit while logged out to see how it works for logged-out editors, or you can create a separate account to be able to set your account's preferences. Please share your thoughts about the single edit tab system at the feedback topic on mediawiki.org or sign up for formal user research (type "single edit tab" in the question about other areas you're interested in). The new system has not been finalized, and your feedback can affect the outcome. The team particularly wants your thoughts about the options in Special:Preferences. The current choices in Special:Preferences are:
    • Remember my last editor,
    • Always give me the visual editor if possible,
    • Always give me the source editor, and
    • Show me both editor tabs.  (This is the current state for people using the visual editor. None of these options will be visible if you have disabled the visual editor in your preferences at that wiki.)
  • Can you read and type in Korean or Japanese? Language engineer David Chan needs people who know which tools people use to type in some languages. If you speak Japanese or Korean, you can help him test support for these languages. Please see the instructions at mw:VisualEditor/IME Testing#What to test if you can help, and report it on Phabricator (Korean - Japanese) or on Wikipedia (Korean - Japanese).

If you aren't reading this in your favorite language, then please help us with translations! Subscribe to the Translators mailing list or contact us directly, so that we can notify you when the next issue is ready. Thank you!

Gathering my wits...

After a little while, I'd like to ask more seasoned admins to review my actions. Is there a way to create an "admin action log"? For instance, CDS and PROD logs only go to the beginning of this year, because even though I'd been nominating pages long before the logs were created, it didn't occur to me to create a page that tracked these actions. So far I haven't found a way to track my deletions/blocks etc. Many thanks! 78.26 (spin me / revolutions) 18:21, 28 December 2015 (UTC)

(talk page watcher) @78.26: Your logged actions can be viewed at Special:Log/78.26. I don't know of any editable logs, like those from TW. — JJMC89(T·C) 19:27, 28 December 2015 (UTC)
@JJMC89: thank you. That's not limited to admin actions, but it would probably work as I am also capable of making non-admin mistakes! 78.26 (spin me / revolutions) 19:34, 28 December 2015 (UTC)
@78.26: It can be filtered to the desired log type (deletion/block/etc.) in the first dropdown. — JJMC89(T·C) 19:39, 28 December 2015 (UTC)

Got an edit conflict, here's my reply (but thank you JJMC89!):

@78.26: Pretty much everything on Wikipedia is logged, it's just a matter of finding them. Check out WP:MOREMENU for a nifty script that links to relevant logs for admins, E.g. block, delete, and protect. Full logs are at Special:Log, where you can set your username as the "performer", to see only actions you have taken. I've only very briefly looked at your logs but the judgement looks right to me! However note you can modify actions, rather than remove/re-add, as you did at Wissam Ben Yedder. Are you using Twinkle? It automatically matches move-protect settings with the edit-protect settings. Here it's kind of redundant because non-autoconfirmed users can't move pages anyway... I guess we should change that, but the edit/move protect sync is what the native interface does, so we just mimicked that (I help maintain Twinkle). Anyway it's fine if you also move-protect, I think this is more or less the norm. Best MusikAnimal talk 19:48, 28 December 2015 (UTC)

Clarification

Would you mind walking me through the thought process that led to this ? I had made one revert over the course of 6 dix days, and that revert was of an IP editor, who is not allowed to edit that article at all, and could have been reverted an indefinite number of times without violating the 3Rr rule, per WP:ARBPIA3#500/30. When Other Legends Are Forgotten (talk) 00:53, 31 December 2015 (UTC)

@When Other Legends Are Forgotten: Hmm, well I wish you had pinged me in your unblock request. This was indeed in response to the WP:RFPP report. Upon looking at the revision history of Ethnocracy, I saw that you were continually reverting others' edits. There was a clear content dispute involving multiple editors, with you on one side of the dispute, suggesting a failure to work with others to establish consensus. Whether the content is truly appropriate or not, I have no idea, but one look at the talk page shows extensive discussion, so the revision history should not show a version of the article continually being enforced by a single editor. Thus the block itself was from a pattern of edit warring, not a 3RR violation. Continual edit warring, over a long period of time, is just as worthy of a block as violating 3RR, as it suggests there is a likelihood it will continue. From your talk page history it was clear to me you were aware of what edit warring is and how to go about resolving content disputes. That is the thought process I went through, to answer your question. The chosen duration of 24 hours was procedural for a first offense, and not a seemingly useless punitive measure. By contrast, if there were multiple editors on both sides of the dispute, full protection would have been more appropriate.
I will admit I did overlook your impression that some of these reverts were exempt, as you say, however on the talk page there is no indication this article is under a 30/500 editing restriction, which there should be if that were the case. As such I think it's only fair to say the anonymous users are free to edit. I suppose that matter will need to be addressed apart from your concerns with this block MusikAnimal talk 01:56, 31 December 2015 (UTC)
I appreciate your thoughtful response. The 30/500 restriction is a a relatively new one, and applies to "any page that could be reasonably construed as being related to the Arab-Israeli conflict" - regardless of whether or not it is tagged as such. The restriction applies to literally thousands of pages, the vast majority of which are not tagged. It strains credulity to believe that text such as " Palestinians exiled in 1948 are denied their right of return.[9]" could not be reasonably construed as being related to the Arab-Israeli conflict. And indeed, though I reverted the IP at least three times citing the aforementioned restriction, they did not once claim that it does not apply. I think you are clearly mistaken if you think that without such a tag anonymous users are free to edit, but will take it up on an appropriate notice baord to get confirmation.
If I may, let me offer you a different perspective on the sequence of events: You were gamed by a scrutiny evading, IP hopping anonymous editor, who was edit warring on an article he was not even allowed to edit once. It doesn't take a genius to figure out that 86.132.200.118 , 81.132.248.242 and 81.132.249.228 are one and the same. Between these IPs, they reverted the article 7 times since mid-December, including 3 times within 2 hours on Dec 13. Yet instead of blocking them, or protecting the page, you rewarded them by responding to their request for page protection by blocking me. The gloating is par for the course, which strengthens my argument. Take care. When Other Legends Are Forgotten (talk) 04:16, 31 December 2015 (UTC)
FYI, I have asked for clarification, here. When Other Legends Are Forgotten (talk) 04:30, 31 December 2015 (UTC)
I've wrote back on the ArbCom case, thanks for starting that discussion. Thank you also for sharing your side of the dispute at Ethnocracy. With disputes I don't take sides. Sorry the anonymous user(s) seem to think that, but that's not the case. The thing is there were seasoned editors involved, not just these IPs that may or may not be the same person. I still stand by my decision, as your actions were clearly edit warring. That's not to say others were edit warring too, but with this block we are able halt the edit war, which is favourable over full page protection, the only other viable alternative given the circumstances. Full protection means all editors unrelated to the dispute are unable to contribute, which is obviously far from desirable.
In hindsight you probably deserved a stern warning to seek dispute resolution, but I feel as though you were fully aware of this procedure. Even if over several week's time, this back-and-forth editing is not okay and gives the wiki a bad name. As an admin I try to do my best to fairly resolve edit wars by implementing preventive measures. Moving forward, if there is an issue with sockpuppetry feel free to file a report at WP:SPI. If it turns out this article is indeed subject to arbitration remedies, we can enforce the editing restriction by means I've outlined on the ArbCom discussion you opened. Thank you for your understanding MusikAnimal talk 05:27, 31 December 2015 (UTC)

Perhaps you'd like to take a look at what I see as a expected result of your previous actions (blocking me, inadvertently aiding and abetting a scrutiny evading IP -hopper who is not allowed to edit any article in the topic area) . i followed your advice and tagged the relevant article with an {{ARBPIA}} template, and the IP sockpuppet is now edit warring it out of the talk page - [1]. Perhaps some action against them is warranted, as well. When Other Legends Are Forgotten (talk) 23:17, 31 December 2015 (UTC)

I think I'm official done with that page. These IPs might be behaving disruptively, but it should be noted that in general, there is no strict, established consensus that users who don't meet 30/500 can't edit the talk pages at all. Furthermore this article is not in its entirety related to the Arab-Israeli conflict, so I think anyone should be able to edit on unrelated matters. As for these particular IPs, I would recommend reporting to WP:AN/I or requesting semi-protection at WP:RFPP as you feel necessary. I for one choose not to become further involved with this dispute. Sorry I could not be of more help MusikAnimal talk 23:42, 31 December 2015 (UTC)

Now I am disappointed in you. There is very clear consensus that IPs may not edit any Talk page related to the I-P conflict. If you disagree with this, you need to ask for an amendment to the GP of WP:PIA3. Until such time, you are best off not involving ourself in administrative actions related to such articles, as your view of the sanctions is out of line with what arbitration committee has ruled. It is also a bit disingenuous of you to suggest I request page protection - such protection was asked for, and you responded to that request by blocking me.When Other Legends Are Forgotten (talk) 23:47, 31 December 2015 (UTC)

I blocked you for edit warring, which I still stand by. It wasn't just IPs involved. Anyway, please point me to where it says users under 30/500 are not by any means allowed to edit talk pages of articles only partially related to the Arab-Israeli conflict? When the edit filter was set up we were given certain articles, along with some of their talk pages. Meanwhile a discussion at WT:RFPP suggests the practice of even semi'ing these talk pages is unclear. My recommendation to seek admin assistance at relevant noticeboards was in response to your concerns with this set of IPs, and that given my expressed uninterest I obviously won't be responding to those reports. I never examined the dispute outside the perspective of edit warring (what the report at RFPP was for, not sockpuppetry), and nor do I want to MusikAnimal talk 00:36, 1 January 2016 (UTC)
You think talk pages of articles that deal, even partially, with the I-P conflict fall outside ""any page that could be reasonably construed as being related to the Arab-Israeli conflict" ? Or that removing the {{ARBPIA}} template from such articles is allowed by IPs? I an starting to question your competency as an admin, period. Ive asked for clarification on this point as well, and when it comes back as I expect it will (you are dead wrong on this), I expect you to take that clarification to heart. When Other Legends Are Forgotten (talk) 00:53, 1 January 2016 (UTC)
I mean to say there is no strict guideline to follow, where we can unilaterally revert anons without question on a talk page, regardless of what the edit may be. Other admins share my position on this. The IPs removing the template is surely disruptive, not arguing that. My argument was purely hypothetical, hence why I used the words "in general". Thanks for asking for clarification though, as it is clearly needed. I'm now asking you to put this exchange to rest. Further edits to my talk page will be reverted. T:TDYK update didn't run tonight (UTC New Year)

MusikAnimal, I hope you're having a Happy New Year (Wikipedia time), or about to have one.

The nightly update of T:TDYK didn't occur tonight, and I was wondering whether the change to a new year might be the culprit. At any rate, I've manually added the new January 1 header and moved the Current nominations header from December 24 to December 25. I'll try to keep an eye on it for the next few days, in case the problem involves moving from the twelfth month to the first; we haven't had any other month-change issues since your bot started doing the nightly updates. Thanks again for adding this task to your bot; it has been nice to have this daily update done right after UTC midnight. BlueMoonset (talk) 00:55, 1 January 2016 (UTC)

@BlueMoonset: Looks like the Wikipedia servers had a few too many drinks in their New Year's celebration, as the bot apparently failed due to API maxlag errors. It retries three times before giving up, and then is supposed to write to the error log, but I guess that failed too... So I've bumped the retry count up to 5. I tested out the new year on testwiki and it worked [2], so we should be good moving forward. Thanks! MusikAnimal talk 21:55, 1 January 2016 (UTC)
Thanks for the quick reply, MusikAnimal. It looks like the servers have recovered from their New Year's excesses, since the update for January 2 was made earlier. BlueMoonset (talk) 06:46, 2 January 2016 (UTC)

problems with xtools on toollabs

Hello, cyberpower678 directed me to you. I have some problems with this tools:

  • If a username contains non-ascii characters, sometimes some of the links do not work. For example in the editcounter clicking on the number of edits for another project does not display the edit counts but a form where I have to enter the username again
    • But at other times the Url is working, but the generated Url is forwarded with a 301 status code
  • The links on the editcounter leading to commons, meta and wikidata generate Urls with the projectnames commonswiki, metawiki and wikidatawiki, that do not work. The Urls need to be corrected to commons, meta and wikidata
  • The link to wikiviewstats displays "no webservice"
  • While OAuth login works flawlessly for me with phabricator and crosswatch, it is erratic at best with the xtools (sometimes maybe dependent on the chosen language)
  • Even if actually logged in xecho doesn't show any notifications for me
  • The display of the XTools.js-gadget is always logged out for me
    • Clicking on articleinfo in xtools.js causes a 301 forward before displaying the results
    • Clicking on languagetool in xtools.js causes a 404 status code

Can you help with this?

Advice again please

Hey MusikAnimal. I need some advice please. I was patrolling my watchlist and came across some edits by a new registered user adding genre's and recording dates which I reverted and left a message on the users page explaining they need to be sourced. When I got back to my P.C. a while later all my edits relating to this editor had been reverted by user : Mlpearc. He reinstated the unsourced information and left me 3 rather ugly warnings in very quick succession on my talk page, which is in no way assuming good faith. To date the information remains unsourced and while I have asked for an explanation on my and his talk page the only response I have been able to get out of him is "don't feed". I was looking at his talk page and I see this has happened before. Anyone can see I only edit constructively and while my edits are barely passed 7000, my track record is good. Please could you look at these edits and advise me as to what can be done about this. Much appreciated! Robvanvee 16:34, 5 January 2016 (UTC)

This seems to be a pattern...look at his edit summary Robvanvee 16:48, 5 January 2016 (UTC)
Pinging @Mlpearc: If the genres are unsourced, and are not easily verifiable, then I think removal is perfectly warranted. There is a responsibility to ensure challenged material is accompanied by citations. I personally feel things like genres should usually have inline citations, to prevent the common genre-warring – but there's no strict guideline on this. You can also add {{cn}} to encourage sourcing. The "soft rock" genre at Billy Joel appears to be sourced (last citation in list of genres), but not sure about "piano rock". Also note the citations may exist elsewhere in the article and not in the infobox (I usually use the Ctrl+F or ⌘ Command+F on Mac to find them). I am still inclined to believe Mlpearc is editing in good-faith – but I think you did deserve more direct communication (WP:DTR) MusikAnimal talk 16:54, 5 January 2016 (UTC)
While I also believe he is editing in good faith, his response has not been conducive to the collaborative project. With that I will be removing those unsourced genre's. Thank you. Robvanvee 17:04, 5 January 2016 (UTC)
Just don't let it develop into an edit war! MusikAnimal talk 17:08, 5 January 2016 (UTC)
That's the last thing I want. I have made every effort to keep this by the book, which is why I ran this past you first. According to your link, "Wikipedia's verifiability guidelines require all information to be citable to sources. When information is unsourced, and it is doubtful any sources are available for the information, it can be boldly removed". Robvanvee 17:13, 5 January 2016 (UTC)
Ping Robvanvee, No edit war, If a unsourced genre has been in the infobox for a considerable time (ie. before I even watchlist the page), I see that as "accepted" and to change a "accepted" genre, is the same as trying to change a sourced entry, the change "must" be sourced to discount the one being changed. I am all for correctness, as long as changes are sourced and aren't challenged, then it's a good change. Mlpearc (open channel) 18:43, 5 January 2016 (UTC)
I don't think we grandfather in unsourced information. The burden of evidence rests with the editor who wants information included; if information is disputed and cannot be backed up by a source on request, it should be removed, no matter how long it was in the article. Huon (talk) 18:59, 5 January 2016 (UTC)
That's the way I understood it to be. What is a "considerable time" BTW Mlpearc? Robvanvee 19:03, 5 January 2016 (UTC)

@Robvanvee: I've never really thought about it but, about a year, seems to be what I look for. Mlpearc (open channel) 19:22, 5 January 2016 (UTC)

Then your reverting of my edits and issuing 3 warnings makes no sense as I was reverting "recently" added genre's and recording dates. Robvanvee 19:28, 5 January 2016 (UTC)
Doesn't matter now anyway, I got my answer from Huon. Robvanvee 19:30, 5 January 2016 (UTC)
I agree with Huon about burden of evidence I also agree with, if a genre is challenged and a reliable source is not found then it should be removed but, at the same time removing a unsourced genre that has been live and no challenges cannot be replaced with a new unsourced one (IMHO). P.S. We should (if needed) move this discussion off MusikAnimal's talk :P Mlpearc (open channel) 19:42, 5 January 2016 (UTC)
Correct, you cannot introduce new unsourced genres to replace old unsourced genres, but you can simply remove and not replace them. Not sure if that's what happened. Anyway I don't mind the talk here, so long as I have input! But if this discussion spirals out of control I'll block you both. Just kidding. I assume you two are fully capable of figuring out a compromise, and hope I've been of help, as Huon has. Cheers MusikAnimal talk 19:52, 5 January 2016 (UTC)
No, that's not what happened but as I said, I got my answer and the unsourced genre's have since been reverted. Thanks MusikAnimal. Robvanvee 20:01, 5 January 2016 (UTC)

IP block

This IP you blocked yesterday has come back as this and is doing the exact same disruptive editing. Do you know how to range block? Like maybe block "112.198..." or something. DaHuzyBru (talk) 14:06, 6 January 2016 (UTC)

Another as well. DaHuzyBru (talk) 15:27, 6 January 2016 (UTC)
Blocked. Unfortunately that range is too wide to block, but if this is ongoing I can look into other means to stop them MusikAnimal talk 16:10, 6 January 2016 (UTC)
Yeah no worries then. Cheers. DaHuzyBru (talk) 17:08, 6 January 2016 (UTC)

Hi, seeing as User:When Other Legends Are Forgotten was warned not to remove posts by others from talk pages which he agreed not to do[3], shouldn't my edits now be restored on Ethnocracy? pp-30-500

Hi MusikAnimal, thanks for protecting the Jat people page. Can you see if the Gurjar article merits the same treatment, where we have just had an edit war with a newish user? Cheers, Kautilya3 (talk) 18:39, 7 January 2016 (UTC)

@Kautilya3: The template by itself isn't actually doing anything - yet. We're doing a test phase right now, adding only to articles that already have a filter-enforced editing restriction via the legacy filter. Anyway, it's usage is strictly for articles where the subject unambiguously meets qualifies for the 30/500 editing restriction. I don't think this is one of those articles, but either way I don't think I'm really qualified to decide. I'm just helping out with the filters MusikAnimal talk 18:44, 7 January 2016 (UTC)

Edit filter RfC

Hey MusikAnimal. I think the RfC is just about ready to go; could you give it a once over to check it's clear and I haven't missed anything? Thanks, Sam Walton (talk) 16:35, 9 January 2016 (UTC)

@Samwalton9: I don't think the guideline mentions the batch testing tool. I personally routinely use it when creating new filters and modifying existing ones. You'd be able to immediately see if there are major issues with the new regex, meanwhile you could still allow the filter to run with the old regex. This is probably only that important for emergency filters, where you don't want any downtime at all. I guess there's a lot of WP:IAR when it comes to emergencies, so we don't really need to touch on that. However maybe we could make some mention of the batch testing tool for filter modifications.
The thing is you can also test against edits from certain users to ensure the filter still catches edits it used to, or that it catches the new ones that you want to target. That's why I use the "unit tests" on debuggex.com. Maybe some of this gobbledygook could be added to the "Tools and resources" section, without an RfC as it won't change the procedure we use, just offer insight on how to better test your filters. I think you should still disable warn/disallow and monitor the modified filter, even if you've done batch testing. No harm in the added precaution!
The RfCs otherwise look great. The proposed precautions for blocking are comprehensive and I think the community will agree. Thanks for taking the time to get the ball rolling on this much needed feature! MusikAnimal talk 17:39, 9 January 2016 (UTC)
I've just added a note of the testing interface in the Tools and Resources section since I agree it doesn't need to be a major proposed change to the guideline, feel free to alter it. I'll get the RfC rolling then! Sam Walton (talk) 18:05, 9 January 2016 (UTC)

Protected (number)

Hi, MusikAnimal, yesterday you protected a number of number articles (pun intended) and stopped at 11. After they were blocked, they of course continued with another IP address Special:Contributions/36.84.234.164, at number 15. Good grief . IP is already blocked, but perhaps you can protect a few more number articles? - TIA and cheers. And happy 2016! - DVdm (talk) 09:20, 9 January 2016 (UTC)

@DVdm: I went up to 21, and PC'd a few and semi'd others based on what I saw. Do you know if there's a documented LTA case on this vandal in particular? If they have been disrupting in the same way for some time, I might be able to put a stop to it by other means MusikAnimal talk 17:08, 9 January 2016 (UTC)
As far I can see, it started on 26-Nov-2015 with this. The list of IPs that I managed to compile is, in reverse chronological order:
Haven't seen an LTA case on this. - DVdm (talk) 18:26, 9 January 2016 (UTC)
Hmm. The edits are easy to spot, but the IP ranges are quite wide. That being said, this has gone on long enough... going to try some things out. Many thanks for compiling this list for me! MusikAnimal talk 18:41, 9 January 2016 (UTC)
FWIW, already more of same person with:
Perhaps these particular edits are not disruptive, but it's definitely 36.84.234.164 block evasion (bl. less than 31 hours ago by Materialscientist). - DVdm (talk) 10:02, 10 January 2016 (UTC)

A few for you to check on

Hello again M. I am glad that the trial went well. Douchebag showed up on the list. It is another one that is fully protected so I can't get at it. Is a change to the expiry time like this something that your new bot will fix? You might also check Wikipedia:Requests for permissions/AutoWikiBrowser and Wikipedia:Requests for permissions/Mass message sender. I think that some of the editing that you did on the first one had a spillover on the second - though I could be wrong. As ever thanks for your help. MarnetteD|Talk 06:04, 5 January 2016 (UTC)

@MarnetteD: Hey! I'm looking to have the bot fix expiries with the next iteration, but it won't be doing it to template/fully protected pages. I fixed Douchebag and the Mass message sender, but not sure about Wikipedia:Requests for permissions/AutoWikiBrowser. It is indefinitely semi and move-protected, as the templates imply MusikAnimal talk 06:45, 5 January 2016 (UTC)
Thanks for checking on those. Unfortunately, the second two are still in the category. Do you think it has anything to do with what was discussed here Category talk:Wikipedia pages with incorrect protection templates#Not sure what is up. I know I'm grasping at straws on this. In the case of fully protected pages I can always bring them to you or Redrose64 for fixing :-) Cheers MarnetteD|Talk 16:10, 5 January 2016 (UTC)
@MarnetteD: Got it. Question... how often are you seeing pages like this? E.g. have {{pp-move}} (or pp-move-indef) but are only move-protected to autoconfirmed users. I made that change to Twinkle that's probably causing a lot of this MusikAnimal talk 16:20, 5 January 2016 (UTC)
I am pretty sure that these are the only three I have seen this happen on. If my wavering memory comes up with another one I will post it here. I just checked the cat again and those two are still listed in it even after your updates. In the thread I linked to Redrose64 mentioned that the {{pp-move}} needed to be removed. Should we try that in this situation? MarnetteD|Talk 16:33, 5 January 2016 (UTC)
I think the category is taking a while to repopulate, or you could try the null edit. The two Permission pages don't have the hidden category "Wikipedia pages with incorrect protection templates" anymore, since I bumped the move protection to sysop-only, making the pp-move templates valid MusikAnimal talk 16:35, 5 January 2016 (UTC)
Thanks for checking. I did perform a null edit on both pages before my last post here. I also checked the transclusions and there was nothing causing it there that I could find. It is a mystery since they are both still here Category:Wikipedia pages with incorrect protection templates and when I click on the "This page is a member of X hidden categories" it mentions the cat. Ah well not a big problem in the grand scheme of things. Best regards. MarnetteD|Talk 19:11, 5 January 2016 (UTC)
Weird!! I also see "Wikipedia pages with incorrect protection templates" when I edit the page, but just viewing the page, that hidden category is clearly not there. I only see "Semi-protected project pages" and "Wikipedia move-protected project pages". For instance see Wikipedia:Requests for permissions/Account creator, it has the same edit/move protection settings. MusikAnimal talk 19:22, 5 January 2016 (UTC)
Woot Woot! This worked. I wonder why my null edit of a few days ago didn't but I guess we will never know :-/ Have a delightful week on WikiP and even more so off. MarnetteD|Talk 23:04, 10 January 2016 (UTC)

Global renamer introduction

Congratulations on your successful nomination for global renamer. Cyberpower678 asked for a brief introduction, and I figured it couldn't hurt to give you one too. Here's what I posted at User_talk:K6ka#I_would_like_a_teacher_to_get_started_with_the_user_group, word for word:

Hehe, well, the actual renaming process isn't too difficult; if you know how to make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich sandwich then you know how to rename people. The thing that confuses people the most, however, is likely to be the global account system.
In the past, accounts on other Wikimedia projects used to be different from one another. For example, if I had the username "John Doe" on the English Wikipedia, if I wanted an account on Commons I'd have to manually register an account there. And if I didn't, someone else could register the username "John Doe" on Commons...
...but not anymore; the global account system, or the "Single User Login" (SUL), fixes that by making usernames global. Now, if I registered "Jane Doe" on the English Wikipedia, no one else on any other Wikimedia project can register that username, even if the username hasn't been created on Commons. This works by creating a "global account", which contains the username and email. Accounts on individual Wikimedia projects are called "local accounts", and they are attached to a global account. A local account that is attached to a global account is automatically logged into when the username and password for the global account is specified. When you visit a wiki that you've never visited before, a local account on that wiki is automatically created and attached to your global account, allowing you to edit that wiki and set your personal preferences (which are still mostly local).
The introduction of the global account system has also allowed users to be renamed globally, across all of Wikimedia. In the past, renames were done locally, and if you wanted to rename your English Wikipedia and your Commons accounts, you had to make two separate requests on two separate wikis. The more accounts you had, the more annoying it got. The global account system solves this problem by allowing global renames; with only one request, all attached local accounts, plus the global account, will be moved to the new username. No more Google Translating your request in French!
Accounts with clashing usernames on other wikis could not make the transition to global accounts peacefully. They had to visit Special:MergeAccount to unify the local accounts. The accounts that didn't do this were forcefully renamed in order to allow a "dominant user" to get the full claim on the global account, and to give those unattached local accounts a global account of their own. More details on this change at m:Single User Login finalisation announcement and mw:SUL finalisation.
So, that's a brief technical introduction to SUL and why it matters to global renaming. Like I said, the interface for global renaming is very simple, although there are some things you should be aware of...
  • Before renaming, always check Special:CentralAuth! Special:CentralAuth looks up the specified username across all of Wikimedia, and will return results if it finds something. It is used to locate global accounts and any local accounts (plus their edit count and user groups) attached to it. For example, Special:CentralAuth/K6ka reveals all of my local accounts, plus my global account status. Use Special:CentralAuth both on the requesting user's username and the target username. The first should be done to check for any active blocks, or for potential issues that could preclude renaming. The policy around renaming users that are blocked on another Wikimedia project is a bit vague, but at least for the English Wikipedia, it's common practice for users to be unblocked before being renamed. The latter should be done to see if the target username is already taken; if it appears to be used, even on another Wikimedia project, the rename request can't be processed (unless it's a usurpation request).
  • Be sure to use m:Special:GlobalRenameProgress on the requesting user's username. GlobalRenameProgress displays the progress of any renames in progress around Wikimedia when given a username. For example, if I renamed myself "K6ka", m:Special:GlobalRenameProgress/K6ka will show all my local accounts and whether or not they got renamed. The thing you want to look for here is the rename log; if the requesting user has been renamed in the past, a log entry will be made visible in GlobalRenameProgress. Generally, if a user has been renamed already, tell them that renaming user accounts take up valuable server resources, and that frivolous or repeated requests will not be processed. If they agree and understand, you can proceed with the rename. Also, if a user has made too many rename requests, or has been renamed too many times, you can decline the request or discuss it with other global renamers.
  • What about similar usernames? Oh, right. When processing a request you may run into messages that say something like "The target username is similar to an existing username: <blah blah blah/>". That's the Antispoof filter, intended to prevent users from picking usernames too similar to existing ones. However, Antispoof does occasionally block names that bear no similarity to the conflicting name. Unfortunately, while WP:ACC has a process for handling this, global renaming does not. You can see m:Talk:Steward_requests/Username_changes#Accounts_with_similar_usernames for a proposal, and for now you can follow the suggestions there.
  • And usurpations? Again, there is no official global usurpation policy, although a draft has been written here. For now, leave requests made on WP:CHU/U be, as only stewards and English Wikipedia bureaucrats who are also global renamers can handle requests there. I've seen some non-steward global renamers process usurpations on m:SRUC, but don't worry: I've never usurped an account in my life, so if you don't feel comfortable doing it, that's totally fine.
That's a lot to take in, but it will come naturally to you! Feel free to poke me again if you have any questions, and you can always ask another member of the global renamer team. Good luck!
One more thing... remember what I said about global accounts and local accounts being attached when you visit another wiki? You can use m:User:Krinkle/Tools/Global SUL to create your local accounts across all of Wikimedia. I don't think it's strictly required for global renaming, but it doesn't hurt to do it.

Good luck! —k6ka 🍁 (Talk · Contributions) 12:09, 12 January 2016 (UTC)

And a hearty congrats from, and a thank you for your support.—cyberpowerChat:Online 13:00, 12 January 2016 (UTC)
Thank you K6ka for the thorough explanation! I went to review some WP:CHU/S requests last night, and waited to see what you would do. Your actions matched my instincts, so hopefully this will be pretty straightforward. Cheers MusikAnimal talk 16:35, 12 January 2016 (UTC)
