Hello NIUIC. The nature of your edits gives the impression you have an undisclosed financial stake in promoting a topic, but you have not complied with Wikipedia's mandatory paid editing disclosure requirements. Paid advocacy is a category of conflict of interest (COI) editing that involves being compensated by a person, group, company or organization to use Wikipedia to promote their interests. Undisclosed paid advocacy is prohibited by our policies on neutral point of view and what Wikipedia is not, and is an especially serious type of COI; the Wikimedia Foundation regards it as a "black hat" practice akin to black-hat search-engine optimization.

Paid advocates are very strongly discouraged from direct article editing, and should instead propose changes on the talk page of the article in question if an article exists. If the article does not exist, paid advocates are extremely strongly discouraged from attempting to write an article at all. At best, any proposed article creation should be submitted through the articles for creation process, rather than directly.

Regardless, if you are receiving or expect to receive compensation for your edits, broadly construed, you are required by the Wikimedia Terms of Use to disclose your employer, client and affiliation. You can post such a mandatory disclosure to your user page at User:NIUIC. The template {{Paid}} can be used for this purpose – e.g. in the form: {{paid|user=NIUIC|employer=InsertName|client=InsertName}}. If I am mistaken – you are not being directly or indirectly compensated for your edits – please state that in response to this message. Otherwise, please provide the required disclosure. In either case, do not edit further until you answer this message. ElKevbo (talk) 22:14, 1 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

ElKevbo, thanks for keeping an eye on the Northern Illinois University Wikipedia Page. You are correct, I work for NIU. The failure to note that was born out of ignorance. Can you offer a bit of guidance? How and where're would I insert the template you suggest to make it clear that the latest edits were done by a university employee? NIUIC (talk) 14:15, 2 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
You placed the template in the right place, it just had some additional code that I removed for you so the template would display correctly.
If you request that your account be renamed - a really easy process that's no big deal - then you'll be welcome to make suggestions and requests for the university in the article's Talk page. That gives other editors who don't have a conflict-of-interest an opportunity to evaluate and potentially implement those edits in the article. ElKevbo (talk) 23:44, 2 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Your submission at Articles for creation: sandbox (November 2)[edit]

DoubleGrazing, you are correct that a page about Northern Illinois University existed, however, this was intended as a re-write of that - making corrections and building upon what exists. I am new to Wikipedia and thought that working on this in a sandbox and then making changes to the main page was the way to accomplish this. Can you offer guidance on how to proceed?

If this was the first article that you created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

The page User:NIUIC/sandbox has been speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This was done under section G11 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page seemed to be unambiguous advertising which only promoted a company, group, product, service, person, or point of view and would need to have been fundamentally rewritten in order to become encyclopedic. Please read the guidelines on spam and Wikipedia:FAQ/Organizations for more information.

Please do not recreate the material without addressing these concerns, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If you think this page should not have been deleted for this reason, or you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator. Hello Salvio,
I am Joe King, and I would appreciate if you would provide me with the material deleted from User:NIUIC/sandbox . I work for Northern Illinois University and was asked to update the page. It would seem to be very much in line with what other universities post - no advertising, no unsubstantiated claims, etc. So I would really appreciate the opportunity to have a conversation about what needs to be changed. If you prefer to communicate via email I can be reached at Joking@niu.edu NIUIC (talk) 17:34, 2 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Hello Salvio,
Just following up on my earlier note asking for access to my deleted Sandbox. I hope to hear from you soon.

November 2022[edit]

Welcome to Wikipedia. Because we have a policy against usernames which give the impression that the account represents a group, club, organization, company, or website, I have blocked this account from editing. You are welcome to continue editing after you have chosen a new username that complies with Wikipedia's username policy.

It also appears that your account is intended to be used for the purpose of telling the world about an organization, person or cause that you consider worthwhile. Unfortunately, many good causes are not sufficiently notable for their own Wikipedia article, and all users are discouraged from editing in any area where they have an inherent conflict of interest. You may wish to consider one of these alternative outlets. Additionally, if your contributions to Wikipedia form all or part of work for which you are, or expect to be, paid or compensated in any way, you must disclose who is paying you to edit here.

Please take a moment to either create a new account, or request a username change of your current account here. The new username that you choose must represent you as an individual person, and it must comply with Wikipedia's username policy.
  • To create a new account with a different username, simply log out of this account and then click here to make a new one.
  • If you prefer to change the username on this account, you may do so by adding the following text to the bottom of your talk page here: {{unblock-un|new username|reason=Your reason here ~~~~}}.

Please note that the new username you choose cannot already be taken or in use by another account. You can go here to search and see if the username you'd like to choose is available. If the search returns that no global account with that username exists, that means it is available to be taken.

Please also note that you are permitted to use a username that contains the name of a company or organization if it also identifies you individually, such as "Sara Smith at XYZ Company", "Mark at WidgetsUSA", or "FoobarFan87", but not "SEO Manager at XYZ Company".

Appeals: If your username does not represent a group, organization, website, or other entity described above, and if you believe that this block was incorrect or made in error, you may appeal this block by adding the following text to the bottom of your talk page here: {{unblock|reason=Your reason here ~~~~}}
