The Apartheid Museum

Hello - I am a novice; but desperately trying to understand how all this works. I hope I am writing to you as I should. I noticed your comment on the Apartheid Museum article. You're right - it is a wholesome mess because Wikipedia and the general public have been fed a palpable fabrication about the history of The Apartheid Museum. Whoever places that material on there on behalf of Gold Reef Casino Group; the owners of the structure that calls itself The Apartheid Museum; perpetuates that palpable fabrication. The Apartheid Museum is a trademark of full force and effect on the Register of Trademarks and it does NOT belong to the Gold Reef Group of Casinos. This is a fact. I have corrected the Wikipedia entry on many occassions in order to bring some semblance of truth to this matter. Visit: www.stainbank.co.za - there lies some truth. Hope I have done this right. And I hope this helps your understanding. Sthatamiya (talk) 08:05, 6 July 2008 (UTC)

Aero L-39 image

Hi,

The image (SAAF-Aero L-39 Albatros-001.jpg) that you added to the SA Air Force wiki page has been removed, and seeing as the editor who removed it didn't leave a comment explaining his actions, I thought I'd let you know why it was done. In short, the image didn't belong on the page because the SA Air Force has never operated L-39s or any other Eastern Bloc aircraft. The L-39 in your photo is really a privately-owned aircraft that was imported by its owner from Eastern Europe. It's ok, mistakes happen, but I'd appreciate it if you could also edit the title and description on the photo's Commons page in order to avoid future confusion. Thanks, — Impi (talk) 11:28, 19 January 2008 (UTC)

Ah, I see you have already updated commons. Thanks for the correction --NJR ZA (talk) 12:58, 8 February 2008 (UTC)

Province category renaming

The CfD has been closed, so I can't comment there, but I've made a list of all the South African province-related categories I think ought to be renamed, at User:Htonl/South Africa provincial category renaming. I've also made some comments about the tricky case of the North West on the talk page there. Please feel free to edit the list if you can think of anything I've missed! - htonl (talk) 15:51, 30 October 2008 (UTC) {{resolved}}

Hi - a stub template or category which you created has been nominated for deletion or renaming at Wikipedia:Stub types for deletion. The stub type, which was not proposed at Wikipedia:WikiProject Stub sorting/Proposals, does not meet the standard requirements for a stub type, either through being incorrectly named, ambiguously scoped, or through failure to meet standards relating to the current stub hierarchy or likely size, as explained at Wikipedia:Stub. Please feel free to make any comments at WP:SFD regarding this stub type, and in future, please consider proposing new stub types first! Grutness...wha? 00:40, 4 December 2008 (UTC) {{resolved}}

Pilanesberg

I noticed you changed all of the references in Pilanesberg to game reserve rather than National park, if it has indeed lost its status, can you please cite this fact and include in the article that it is a former national park. I am having trouble finding a source that says it has lost this status, and many refer to it as both a game reserve and a national park. Thank you. Philc 02:54, 9 January 2009 (UTC) {{resolved}}

Emalahleni

Oops! Thanks for warning me, I'll change it back. BTW, how stupid is it to have two municipalities with the same name! - htonl (talk) 18:53, 8 March 2009 (UTC) {{resolved}}

Thanks for catching my error

Thanks for the catch on Royal Natal National Park. I was having some trouble with one aspect of my search and replace pattern but I didn't think anything had slipped through damaged. I've since fixed it and it should not happen again. To be on the safe side I'm going to try to figure out how to trap duplicate fields just in case something like that happens again. --droll [chat] 09:25, 8 April 2009 (UTC) {{resolved}}

Hello NJR ZA!

Thanks for your excellent contribs! I have two questions. You seem to be an expert on the subject of the SAAF and I am not certain about how to categorize some of the articles, can you please check these (123 45) edits?

Also, any suggestions on how to rewrite the surface description of runway 06/24 would be really appreciated. Many thanks in advance and greetings from Amsterdam, Kwiki (talk) 04:08, 13 June 2009 (UTC)

Not really an expert, just interested in the topic and I try to improve South Africa related articles in general. I have a hardcopy airport/runway list from the South African Civil Aviation Authority somewhere around here. Will have a look at what they have to say about 06/24 --NJR_ZA (talk) 08:45, 13 June 2009 (UTC)
Thanks! According to worldaerodata.com the surface of runway 2 is "GRADED OR ROLLED EARTH, GRASS ON GRADED EARTH." but I am not sure how to rewrite that. Kwiki (talk) 08:49, 13 June 2009 (UTC)
In that case is is probably best to use Grass as per the instructions in Template:Infobox_Airport. But let me first double check. I suspect that that runway was paved at some stage --NJR_ZA (talk) 12:13, 13 June 2009 (UTC)
Seems it is still grass. I'll tag it as such --NJR_ZA (talk) 12:21, 13 June 2009 (UTC)
Thanks again! Where do you get the coordinates from? Some of the Airforce bases don't have them yet. Kwiki (talk) 03:35, 25 June 2009 (UTC)

I live in South Africa, so I have been to some of them and have a rough idea where the others are. With that knowledge it is easy to find them on google maps with satellite view switched on. --NJR_ZA (talk) 07:37, 25 June 2009 (UTC)
OK, thanks! I found some of the coordinates on List_of_airports_in_South_Africa. Kwiki (talk) 14:12, 6 July 2009 (UTC)

Sandton

I'm trying to get information about the photograph of Sandton city, was it uploaded by you? If you can help me, please contact at via email

Thanks

Sandton at night
The photo on the right here? If so, then yes, it was taken by me. What info would you like? --NJR_ZA (talk) 10:10, 24 June 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for reply. Haven't been on in a while. I wrote an article about the soccer world cup in SA next year and want to know whether I can use the picture, crediting the author underneath in the caption. Please confirm whether you'll grant me permission to so use it, otherwise I will remove it from the article. Thank you.

Yes, you are welcome to use it. Not a requirement for use, but I would like to see the final article when published; it is always nice to see my work in use elsewhere --NJR_ZA (talk) 16:44, 26 July 2009 (UTC)

//Khara Hais

As a matter of urgency, please add a few words at the start of //Khara Hais explaining that the // are actually part of the name and giving the reasons for this highly unusual spelling. — RHaworth (talk · contribs) 15:35, 2 September 2009 (UTC)

I have added a quick note on the spelling, but I am really not an expert on the field of linguistics. Will search for more info and some references.
On a different note, I see that you have moved the page from //Khara Hais Local Municipality to //Khara Hais. Is there a specific reason for that? All the other Local Municipality articles in South Africa use the Local Municipality postfix. --NJR_ZA (talk) 16:46, 2 September 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for the note. The move was a mistake. Personally I would prefer to see a title of Khara Hais Municipality which is what they call themselves on this page or simply Khara Hais since, unlike for example KwaDukuza Local Municipality, there is apparently no need to distinguish between a municipality and settlement of the same name. And Khara Hais are quite inconsistent within their own website as to whether they put // in front or not. But feel free to move the article to any title you want. — RHaworth (talk · contribs) 18:24, 2 September 2009 (UTC)

I have proposed renaming of Category:Tethered helium balloon to Category:Images of balloons at Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Log/2009 October 17#Category:Tethered helium balloon. PrimeHunter (talk) 01:15, 17 October 2009 (UTC)

I have attempted to fix the links in your archive box by changing an archiveprefix parameter you may have copied from User:ClueBot III. This should cause ClueBot III to change the transcluded User:ClueBot III/Indices/User talk:NJR ZA on the next pass. Sorry if my edit screws something up. North West

Hi Nick , why did you undo my edit's on North West (South African province) ? I believe they were contributing to the article . Mass09 (talk) 22:18, 22 October 2009 (UTC)

Hi there. I simply reinstated the red links for articles that should exist. See Wikipedia:Red link for details. --NJR_ZA (talk) 05:47, 23 October 2009 (UTC)
I understand. Thanks. Mass09 (talk) 07:17, 23 October 2009 (UTC)

MeerKAT Photos

Thanks for your response. The Commons process is confusing and complicated! All I want to do is add a pic or two to a single article, for WP to force me to jump though all those hoops is a load of crap! I've uploaded the photos (reduced size) to Flikr [1] I was there during the past weekend as part of an Amateur radio field station. (I'm the bald guy sitting at the radio in two of the photos) It was an historic occasion as it was the last time anyone will be permitted to operate a radio transmitter from that site. Please take a look at the pics and feel free to use the suitable ones. Roger (talk) 19:08, 28 October 2009 (UTC)

OK I've done the licencing as requested and added comments. The comment on the "farm/landscape" photo includes GPS co-ordinates for the relevant sites. Roger (talk) 20:39, 28 October 2009 (UTC)

Help

Hello, I see you posted a note on the Wikiproject South Africa talk page about South African music. I am an American and have virtually no access to South African library materials, and am wondering whether there are books about South African pop/rock music that are available, or print magazines. Can you please advise? If you have access to these materials, please let me know. Thanks. Chubbles (talk) 18:14, 5 November 2009 (UTC)

I'm not really into the music scene, but will have a look at what is available next time I am at the book store. Will report back here for you. --NJR_ZA (talk) 20:57, 5 November 2009 (UTC)
Okay, thanks. Chubbles (talk) 21:28, 5 November 2009 (UTC)

It is in the greater Johannesburg area. It is the same as wanting to go to "New York City" when you really mean mid-town Manhattan. Cities are more than just their downtown.--TM 15:56, 6 November 2009 (UTC)

Thanks

For adding info to the articles i started, i noted that some of the Names of the Peace Parks don't follow the same line as the official list, please see them added to the list Protected areas of South Africa, and you wiil see what i mean. I would also like to be able to come back to the original Park, like i did for Kalahari and Gemsvok Parks, but someone keeps changing that. In a few years time it may be greatly appreciated if one could refer to the original Park. Great teamwork, keep it up.Flagman (talk) 11:36, 22 November 2009 (UTC)

Best way to stop people for changing information you add it to add references to it. That way it is not just you stating something, but an actual published fact. Easy way to add references is by adding reftools to your edit gadget (the bar of useful buttons just above the edit area). To do so, go to your preferences at Special:Preferences, look under the Editing tab and switch on Show edit toolbar (requires JavaScript), then look under the Gadgets tab and switch on refTools under the Editing gadgets section --NJR_ZA (talk) 12:58, 22 November 2009 (UTC)

Removal: Cape Vidal

How is it that an article i started was removed for copy problems, if i did not copy anything that the location details of a park? I know you are not involved but perhaps you could explain?Flagman (talk) 10:47, 6 December 2009 (UTC)

I can't recall what the content on the article was. Was the location all the article contained and was it copied/pasted as-is from somewhere else? If so then it is a copyright violation with no reason to keep the article. If there was more content then it probably would not have been deleted; just the bits that were copy/pasted would have been removed or changed. You really should look at quality vs. quantity. You have started a lot of pages, but they don't have any substance and is not very useful. If you want, pick one of those articles and I will help you get it from an empty stub to at least a useful start article. --NJR_ZA (talk) 11:32, 6 December 2009 (UTC)

Associated Private Nature Reserves

Have a look at: http://www.krugerpark.co.za/krugerpark-times-19-elephants-collared-18022.html That's what the Kruger has been reporting about it, but also: http://www.kruger2canyons.com/news/labels/umbabat.html For more local news. It has been going on for years allready.Flagman (talk) 13:10, 9 December 2009 (UTC)

Yes, I'm aware of that and I have not removed the APNR from the Protected Areas article, just from the National Parks section. APNR is still under Private and Other Parks. The APNR is important and should be mentioned under Protected Areas, but even though they are bordering the Kruger and may even dropped fences between them and the Kruger, they are still not a part of the National Park. National Parks are not just thumbsucked, they are defined and enacted by law. I'll add the South African laws relating to protected areas and National Parks to the articles shortly. --NJR_ZA (talk) 13:33, 9 December 2009 (UTC)
Ah, seems that the act I was thinking of (National Parks Act (No. 57 of 1976)) has been repealed by the National Environmental Management: Protected Areas Act, 2003. But it still contains the same requirements for National Parks and they are:
‘national park’ means-
(a) an area which was a park in terms of the National Parks Act, 1976
(Act No. 57 of 1976), immediately before the repeal of that Act by
section 90(1) of this Act, and includes a park established in terms of
an agreement between a local community and the Minister which
has been ratified by Parliament; or
“
(b) an area declared or regarded as having been declared in terms of
section 20 as a national park,
and includes an area declared in terms of section 20 as part of an area
referred to in paragraph (a) or (b) above;
‘National Parks Land Acquisition Fund’ means the fund established
by section 12A of the National Parks Act, 1976 (Act No. 57 of 1976);”

Dams

Spioenkop was a decimal mistake shoeld be 15.314 km² is (5.913 sq mi). Driekloof i can't find what you removed, but should be 1.906 square kilometres (0.736 sq mi) the storage capacity here is 32071 m³ because this dam is deep.Flagman (talk) 12:28, 19 December 2009 (UTC)

Westdene Dam Disaster

Thanks for your help on this page. I felt the urge to start this page as it was such a significant event but did not necesarily have the skills. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Thelemming70 (talkcontribs) 09:34, 23 December 2009 (UTC)

You did quite well. Most importantly, you did not violate copyright by copy/pasting from other website. --NJR_ZA (talk) 15:09, 23 December 2009 (UTC)

Edit conflict

With you and wizzy let me loose 14 newly added dams to this list. !Flagman (talk) 12:11, 20 December 2009 (UTC)

You can simply copy and those new ones and paste them into the new version of the article, but please, please make sure your data is correct. Right now I am trying to find a ref that supports your claim that Ohrigstad Dam has a surface area of 992km2. If it does, it will be the biggest dam in South Africa. --NJR_ZA (talk) 12:20, 20 December 2009 (UTC)

I based the figures on a spreadsheet i got from the SANCOLD (south african national committee on large dams)(member of ICOLD , international committee on large dams), dated january 2009, i made one big mistake. The surface areas where stated in 10³m², and not in km². I took for granted that their data would be even more accurate that the department's data. If you would like i could sent you this file? For the rest i am trying to find a second site to veryfy the surface areas, you seem to have done so with most of the capacity figures on the DWA site. I have asked permission of the DWA to use maps, pictures, data, etc. from their site, for wikipedia. They replied that they would do so in january as most people are now om holiday.Flagman (talk) 12:23, 23 December 2009 (UTC)

Is you spreadsheet the same as this one? If so, then there is no need to forward me the one you have. I am busy building a wiki table from the the spreadsheet in the above link. One thing I noted is that the capacity they indicate seems to be Gross capacity, i.e. the max the dam will hold, rather than net or operating capacity. The figures I have added to List of reservoirs and dams in South Africa mostly indicate net capacity. We might need to show both figures in List of reservoirs and dams in South Africa. I'll prepare my table as a subpage under my user and let you know when it is done; then you can have a look at it and let me know if what you think about it before I take it over to List of reservoirs and dams in South Africa. --NJR_ZA (talk) 15:42, 23 December 2009 (UTC)

No the spreadsheet i used was not from the dwaf (however when i use your link i only get the header, no data further). On your sheet i notice that the second dam on your list Allemanskraal Dam you list as being in the Eastern Cape, however it is in the Free State, and therefore on the Sand River (Free State), not Sand River (South Africa). The capacity is allways a theoretical 100 % gross figure. The Vaal Dam can hold 107 % of its working (or nett capacity), It would be good to include both figures (if everybody would understand that, it may otherwise confuse the issue even more). Did you miss the Albert Falls Dam on your list on purpose (is bigger than the Allemanskraal Dam)? --Flagman (talk) 13:41, 24 December 2009 (UTC)
