DYK nomination of Henri Fertet

[edit]

Hello! Your submission of Henri Fertet at the Did You Know nominations page has been reviewed, and some issues with it may need to be clarified. Please review the comment(s) underneath your nomination's entry and respond there as soon as possible. Thank you for contributing to Did You Know! MX () 20:09, 2 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Narky Blert, we really do need to hear back from you on this nomination, if you wish to continue pursuing it. Please post there right away. Many thanks. BlueMoonset (talk) 18:44, 20 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Narky Blert, you have been quite active on Wikipedia since I posted the above message. At this point, it has been nearly four weeks since you were pinged here without any action on your part. If you do not plan to take care of the sourcing requests on the nomination, please at least have the courtesy to let us know. Thank you. BlueMoonset (talk) 06:17, 28 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

A tag has been placed on Category:Songs written by Ted Jarrett requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section C1 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the category has been empty for seven days or more and is not a disambiguation category, a category redirect, a featured topics category, under discussion at Categories for discussion, or a project category that by its nature may become empty on occasion.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Broad-concept article disambiguation pages

[edit]

I appreciate your efforts to fix links to disambiguation pages, but edits like this shouldn't be done. Links to broad-concept articles and disambiguation pages marked as broad-concept articles should not be altered because they are primary topics. That way, when an article is created at British rule in Ireland it will have appropriate incoming links. Please see WP:CONCEPTDAB and WP:PRIMARYTOPIC. buidhe 23:49, 6 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Buidhe: WP:HOWTODAB says the same as INTDABLINK: intentional links to DAB pages must go through the (disambiguation) qualifier. All direct links to DAB pages are reported by User:DPL bot as errors. There is no guarantee that a WP:BCA will ever be written. If the BCA is written, any (disambiguation) redirects can and should be deleted (WP:G6; other speedies are also available).
In the present case, I was tempted to unlink British rule in Ireland altogether. I doubt whether anyone reading about punishment beatings and shootings would be directly interested, for example, in the invasions by the Normans, Cromwell or William III, or in direct rule from Dublin Castle. "British rule in Ireland" is a loaded concept in the contexts of republicanism and of unionism since partition. If there isn't an article specifically about that concept in those contexts, there should be.
I was also tempted to edit "all British institutions" by adding "in Northern Ireland". Very few republicans object to the operations of British institutions in Great Britain. Yrs, Narky Blert (talk) 15:08, 7 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

ref needed in DAB

[edit]

re [1]:

In wikipedia all information must be verifiable. Therefore please do not blindly delete 'refneeded' tags without verifying the tagged information. In this case I simply removed the questioned entry. At the very least, if you really insist, you have to write something in talk page. Staszek Lem (talk) 21:26, 21 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Staszek Lem: See WP:DABREF: "Do not include references in disambiguation pages; disambiguation pages are not articles. Incorporate references into the articles linked from the disambiguation page, as needed". Narky Blert (talk) 21:53, 21 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Incorporate references... Makes sense, thanks. In this case we probably have to add a phrase to DABREF that if the statement in DAB page is dubious (ie not supported by the bluelinked article), it must be removed rather than tagged. Staszek Lem (talk) 20:35, 22 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Staszek Lem: I don't think it's necessary to change DABREF, for two reasons. (1) WP:DABMENTION says DAB page entries not supported by the linked article should be deleted. I do that quite often, though only if I encounter some sort of problem: life's too short to check every DAB page entry supported by a bluelink unrelated to the DAB page title. (2) It's almost impossible to get WP:CONSENSUS to change a guideline, even in very minor ways to clarify wording (I tried once; I know better now).
The best way to challenge an unsupported DAB page entry may be on the target article's Talk Page. Those are more likely to be viewed than any random DAB page, and page watchers are probably the most likely people to know the answer. Similar sorts of thing happen at WP:RFD: it's not uncommon for an editor to counter a proposed deletion by adding info to a target article and then voting "Keep", which everyone else then supports. Yrs, Narky Blert (talk) 21:45, 22 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Thx, Staszek Lem (talk) 17:29, 23 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Narky Blert,

Thanks for fixing the dab page links at Ronna! I'm not sure what WP:MOS says on this, but I'm not a fan, personally, of displaying the parenthetical qualifier. Can/should we pipe those links, or is this the one time (on a dab page) where we should display the parenthetical qualifier?

Cheers,
--Doug Mehus T·C 15:57, 23 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Dmehus: I'm all in favour of piping (disambiguation) links in e.g. hatnotes and (usually) see-alsos in articles. If nothing else, it dissuades IPs from removing the "unnecessary" redirect; see WP:INTDAB for why it is necessary. However, there is a specific guideline for DAB pages, MOS:DABPIPE - "piping and redirects should generally not be used on disambiguation pages". The exceptions are rare, and mostly technical.
BTW, I think Ronna should be a given name page (and have on the Talk Page). See MOS:DABNAME, last para. Yrs, Narky Blert (talk) 16:08, 23 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Narky Blert, Thanks for clarifying about the piped links! Regarding the given name, I didn't really know what to do, so was just going by Template:Given name, which seemed to suggest including it in the Disambiguation tag. I'm not opposed to you making changes there. The close is done, so anyone is free to make changes. :) Doug Mehus T·C 16:26, 23 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Dmehus: I've turned Ronna into a given name page in the way I suggested. It's the sort of recategorisation I do routinely, but didn't want to do here without consultation. I've also added in-links from Ranna and Rona.
Something you might find useful: Preferences/Gadgets -> Appearance -> Display links to disambiguation pages in orange. It'd be very distracting for readers, but as a DABfixing editor I find it invaluable. Narky Blert (talk) 16:36, 23 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Narky Blert, Oh, interesting! That'll be perfect for avoiding DAB solving bot notifications on my talkpage. Thanks! Doug Mehus T·C 17:23, 23 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Narky Blert, Regarding the "given name" thing, yeah, I saw that at the bottom of the dab page, but it wasn't transcluding properly. So wasn't sure what you did to 'fix' that and have it show up as a given name list. Anyway, I see the point, and like the revision. Doug Mehus T·C 17:24, 23 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Dmehus: That trick is very useful to avoid getting botslapped...
I forgot one case where I do very much prefer unpiped links to DAB pages in hatnotes: other people, other places and other uses from WP:PTOPICs. If piped, those links have the puzzling appearance of seeming to point you back to the page you're reading. Yrs, Narky Blert (talk) 17:32, 23 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Narky Blert, Nice! Thanks for the tip, so the unpiped dab links are more for user convenience, from the sounds of it. Also, I'm seeing the orange links for Ranna and Rona above. I don't find them terribly distracting; my only concern was the orange would be too similar in colour tone to redlinks. It is not, so I like it. I also enabled XTools and Navigation Popups. XTools is a bit overkill; not sure how often I'd use it, but am loving Navigation Popups. Will save me making second edits when I link to the wrong article page, or opening 10 tabs for all the wikilinks I'm adding. LOL Doug Mehus T·C 17:37, 23 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Want to do a page move?

[edit]

Hi Narky Blert,

I've pinged IJBall to see if he wants to do it, but since you're so involved in dab pages and I see you are a page mover, want to move South End (disambiguation) to South End following my determination of consensus to move at Talk:South End (disambiguation)?

Cheers,
--Doug Mehus T·C 15:34, 24 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Done No in-links needed fixing, just the tiny clean-ups on the DAB page and the redirect. (FWIW, I'd have !voted support.) Narky Blert (talk) 15:47, 24 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks User:Dmehus you can lists such moves at WP:RMT. Note that I fixed the links of the 18th and all but 1 were for the Boston suburb (the other being the one in Halifax, Canada). Crouch, Swale (talk) 19:05, 24 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Crouch, Swale, Thanks. Would I list it under "contested technical requests," noting the link to the closed consensus determination? Doug Mehus T·C 19:10, 24 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Narky Blert, I re-added the #REDIRECT Talk:South End to Talk:South End (disambiguation) so no wikilinks are broken. I normally prefer to use Talk page of redirect on redirect talkpages, but in the case of page moves, I do see the point to just hard redirecting to the new page name's talkpage. Doug Mehus T·C 19:16, 24 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Dmehus: no you list it under "Uncontroversial technical requests" since the RM is complete the move its self it uncontroversial since there's already consensus. Crouch, Swale (talk) 19:17, 24 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Crouch, Swale, Ah, thanks. That makes sense. Gotcha! Doug Mehus T·C 19:20, 24 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Yoninah (talk) 20:33, 4 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

(edit conflict) I was just about to revert your redirect to the Kim Kardashian reference. I agree the dab page fails WP:TWODABS, but wikt:break the Internet is clear primary topic here. I personally think it should be soft redirected to wikt:break the Internet per WP:R#K5 or, failing that, kept per WP:IAR and WP:NODEADLINES due to the main two dablink dab pages we have. I prefer the first option, though, with a hatnote to Wiktionary soft redirect on the other pages?

Cheers,
--Doug Mehus T·C 20:07, 9 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Dmehus: IMO the encyclopaedic meaning of "Break the Internet" is that issue of Paper, with more information about Kim Kardashian than most people want to know. Everything else is slang, and nothing else is properly sourced in WP. Anyone who wants the WP:DICDEF will be there in two clicks, just as before.
Good catch, that DAB page (which I had edited in November 2018...) was a mess. My edits have in effect restored the status quo ante. Narky Blert (talk) 20:30, 9 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Narky Blert, True, but WP:DICDEF doesn't really apply to soft redirects (see the discussion for pissing it down, with the added discussion and arguments seeming to favour, albeit very slightly, soft retargeting to wikt:pissing it down). Essentially, as I and Rosguill stated, soft redirects essentially help to save us from becoming a dictionary and, in this way, actually enforce adherence to WP:DICDEF/WP:NOTDICTIONARY.
The fact your previous reversions have been restored are actually arguments in favour of soft redirecting here because a maintenance category "monitored short pages" may help with the bot- and human-patrolling for vandalism, disruptive editing, and editors wanting to defy the page's editing norms, no? Doug Mehus T·C 20:44, 9 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Narky Blert, I know you're not a fan of soft redirects, but, see the discussion at the pissing it down RfD, as well as my arguments above this reply, and see if I've persuaded you to consider a soft redirect to Wiktionary in this case. Doug Mehus T·C 20:45, 9 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Comment How I found that page was searching Wiktionary for popular English slang terms which were Internet-related that I could create soft redirects to Wiktionary for, if you're curious. ;-) Doug Mehus T·C 20:46, 9 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Dmehus: More like WP:ONEDAB, a guideline which doesn't exist. My reading of the WP:CONSENSUS in "pissing it down" was that there was no suitable target in WP, and that therefore a soft rediect to wikt was appropriate. That is not the case here: there is an encyclopaedic target.
There is only one goal: get readers to what they're looking for as efficiently as possible. Narky Blert (talk) 21:17, 9 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Narky Blert, thanks for looking into it. Okay, fair enough. I'm okay with this redirect, but given the high profile nature of this term, could a WP:BCA, perhaps be more appropriate, or even a future article? Failing that, I think we should add another hatnote to the current target which references the article on breaking the Internet. Doug Mehus T·C 22:46, 9 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Notice

The article Menachem has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Superfluous article based upon an alternate (and less accurate) transliteration of the Hebrew name Menahem (disambiguation) מנחם; both are acceptable (and mostly interchangeable) transliterations of the exact same name and should all be listed in one place.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. StonyBrook (talk) 00:52, 13 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Just to be clear, I am proposing that Menachem be eventually redirected to Menahem (disambiguation) after the entire list is moved there. StonyBrook (talk) 01:05, 13 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

StonyBrook, I've dePRODded the above as I think the slight variant spelling of Menachem and Menahem can be easily combined into Menahem per WP:DABCOMBINE. Note my edit summary at Menachem. I'd be happy to support combining if you want to propose such a merge. Doug Mehus T·C 19:10, 13 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Doug Thanks for your direction in helping me propose my first merger. You can find the proposal at Talk:Menahem (disambiguation). Cheers. StonyBrook (talk) 22:43, 13 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
StonyBrook, No problem. I like merging and am a Mergist Wikipedian. ;) Doug Mehus T·C 22:46, 13 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Methuselah as a See also reference on the Mehus surname disambiguation page/list

[edit]

Hi Narky,

Do you think Methuselah is a close enough spelling to Mehus that we could add it as a related topic under the see also reference section of Mehus?

Cheers,
Doug Mehus T·C 19:02, 13 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Dmehus: No. Don't overcomplicate. WP should point readers towards what they were actually looking for. No-one is searching for Mehus in mistake for Methuselah. It would be WP:OR to make such a connection without something WP:RS (and my money says there won't be any). Narky Blert (talk) 21:44, 13 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Narky Blert, WP:OR doesn't apply to disambiguation pages, though. This is about connecting similar sounding and worded topics, no? Like a cross reference? Doug Mehus T·C 21:46, 13 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Dmehus: Again, don't overcomplicate. No-one is landing on Mehus by mistake for Methuselah. Narky Blert (talk) 21:55, 13 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
LOL, that's true. It's kind of funny, though, I never realized the spelling of the first part of Methuselah is quite similar. Thank you. Doug Mehus T·C 21:59, 13 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Dab needed tag dn

[edit]

Hi Narky,

While nominating 0 series for deletion at AfD, I noticed this edit diff by you, and I was wondering if you can tell me what the dn tag actually does and, in that context, what the intent was in that?

Thanks,
--Doug Mehus T·C 00:09, 15 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Dmehus: (1) An editor has solved a DABfixing problem and omitted to remove the tag (we've all done it). (2) A change elsewhere has made an ambiguous link unambiguous (and who's going to check all the links in?). If the link looks OK, simply remove the dn tag. I do occasional housekeeping on Category:Articles with links needing disambiguation to do exactly that.
dn tags can also be more pointed and more irritated versions of e.g. cn, check and huh. See e.g. James Mason in Jungle Junction. Narky Blert (talk) 01:24, 15 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, thanks, that makes sense. I thought maybe it had to do with linking to a redirect to a disambiguation page that didn't have a (disambiguation) qualifier. Or, is that what you meant? Doug Mehus T·C 01:26, 15 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Dmehus: dn simply means "I cannot solve this problem". See List of Surinamese records in athletics for the current longest-standing example. Narky Blert (talk) 01:54, 15 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Date List

[edit]

Hi there, Narky Blert! I have a question for you about the WP:DATELIST banner on the Dictionary.com page. I see they are listed 'backwards' according to the guidelines, however they follow all of the entries (except two) on the Word of the Year page. Is this an acceptable format for such a list, or should I change it? AND, if I DO change it, does that mean all of the ones on the Word of the Year page are incorrect? Thanks much for your attention and feedback! February 18, 2020. LeepKendall (talk) 23:26, 18 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@LeepKendall: I don't go looking for DATELIST violations, honest! I just sometimes fall across some.
Dictionary.com now looks A-OK. Word of the year is a right mess: most sections are in 'oldest-first' order (just as in a biography – it does make sense), but I've just tagged three sections for being 'newest-first', and therefore out of line with the rest of that article. Aarrrgggghhhhh!
If I make an edit which just changes ordering, I mark it as WP:MINOR; which I never do if an edit changes content (obvious typos excepted). Yrs, Narky Blert (talk) 00:31, 20 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you so much Narky Blert! I appreciate the clean up. Febuary 25, 2020 LeepKendall (talk) 20:15, 25 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

DYK for Henri Fertet

[edit]

On 19 February 2020, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Henri Fertet, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that French Resistance fighter Henri Fertet was executed by occupying German forces during World War II at the age of 16? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Henri Fertet. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, Henri Fertet), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Alte Liebe
I Will Mention the Loving-kindnesses

Thank you for a needed article, which made the stats. A late Valentine for you: a bird that is normally only heard, acting on stage (well, it was the right balcony, to be precise, for most of the time, until she walked with Siegfried, carrying a little backpack) - the last reminiscence of the impossible made possible. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 11:13, 20 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Gerda Arendt: Thank you! 12,000 views was an impressive number. I hope everyone read the article to the end.
I love the idea of Der Waldvogel wearing a backpack! (Siegfried was the first fully-staged opera I ever saw: Deutsche Oper Berlin, 1968.)
It's a measure of how important the Solti/Culshaw ring was thought to be that Joan Sutherland, of all people, agreed to sing the part. Have you ever read John Culshaw's Ring Resounding? I recommend it highly. Narky Blert (talk) 11:38, 20 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I have the recording, but didn't read much about what was going on behind it. Sutherland has a tag on the article, which should be cleared by tomorrow when she'll be mentioned on DYK. I asked project opera for help, - how about you? My first staged opera was Lucia di Lammermoor, second Gianni Schicchi. I gave Lucia an article. Not the Schicchi, and the Kluge who was coupled with Puccini's work had one, but also tagged ... --Gerda Arendt (talk) 11:48, 20 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Gerda Arendt: Culshaw tells some excellent stories. Someone got hold of a dreadful recording of the horn call, full of watery Russian wobble. After the first take, they played it to the principal horn of the Vienna Phil; who was so enraged that he stormed out of the booth and immediately recorded it again. No third take was needed; that second take is the one on the record. Narky Blert (talk) 12:05, 20 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Move Hải Ninh

[edit]

Hi Narky Blert. Would you mind moving page Hải Ninh to Hải Ninh, Quảng Bình so I can convert Hải Ninh to a disambiguation? Thank you very much 6characters (talk) 04:12, 27 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@6characters:  Not done. I could do a WP:ROBIN move; but you've already got a discussion going with JalenFolf, and it's best to keep discussions in one place.
I've removed the WP:G6 notice from Hải Ninh, Quảng Bình. The page history needs to be kept, and that means a ROBIN move is needed.
I suggest that you first add lists of communes to all the relevant district articles (which are very WP:STUBby!), as you have done to Tĩnh Gia District. That means that the entries on your proposed DAB page will then point somewhere with at least bare-bones information.
I have added an ill link to Hải Ninh, Tĩnh Gia [vi] to that article. That sort of thing is useful to do, because it means that readers of English WP can easily find the best information there is on any WP; even if they have to use e.g. Google Translate.
The best place to ask for page moves of this sort is at WP:RM#Requesting technical moves. Yrs, Narky Blert (talk) 06:22, 27 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
So please do it now. There are two Hải Ninh's, so the disambig is now valid 6characters (talk) 06:56, 27 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Narky Blert:: Your hint steered me to https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uqpJ6XYykHE&feature=youtu.be, which seems to contextually suggest that it's a slur devised specifically for use in what you Brits refer to as football. Am I close? Minerva9 (talk) 01:52, 5 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Minerva9: You broke through my first level of defence but not my second. "Nark"/"narked" is universal Brit slang for "to annoy"/"annoyed", and "narky" looks regional (possibly Merseyside) for "annoying"; "blert" is regional (Merseyside again?) for "fool". Football is one of Nigel Blackwell's main topics, along with Thomas Hardy, the Wirral Peninsula, bad TV, and the pretentious. He's among the greatest pop lyricists; there's a fansite dedicated to deciphering his sources and meaning: e.g. The Referee's Alphabet.

Seba

[edit]

The proper category for Seba is "given name". "Hndis" is generally for full names (i.e. first and last). Clarityfiend (talk) 00:15, 4 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Clarityfiend: hndis is also for mononyms, if there are two or more on the page as there are with Seba.. Compare e.g. Atotoztli, Adelard and Agricola, among many examples.
The hndis documentation is poor: human name is never used except for mononyms, because it doesn't sort correctly. Template:disambiguation has the correct usage: "human name: for Category:Human name disambiguation pages (note that you must instead add the category separately if it needs a different sort key)". See e.g. Albert Hall (disambiguation). Yrs, Narky Blert (talk) 08:53, 4 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Clarityfiend: I knew I remembered a discussion which affirmed that instruction. Wikipedia talk:Disambiguation/Archive 50, item 40: Use of and Template:Disambiguation for multiple disambiguation subcategories (the brackets in the title mean it doesn't pipe correctly). @Doc James: As always, most of my edits have been fixing links to DAB pages where I could, or adding dn tags where I couldn't (WT:MED does a great job with those). I cheerfully hand over the task of writing up the latest wonderdrugs and scientific breakthroughs to those better qualified than I am.
For two potential articles I've recently come across in my travels, see Wikipedia:Redirects for discussion/Log/2020 March 2#Thenium and Wikipedia:Redirects for discussion/Log/2020 January 30#Phenatine. Narky Blert (talk) 20:34, 5 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Translation

[edit]

Dear Narky Blert, could you help me with a translation in de.wikipedia with this article de:Benutzer:Jairon_Levid_Abimael_Caál_Orozco/Gérard_Gertoux under subtitle Ausbildung? The original article is Draft:Gérard Gertoux. Thank you so much if it is possible for you, and I would be very grateful if you can improve the existing text..--Jairon Levid Abimael Caál Orozco (talk) 08:42, 19 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Jairon Levid Abimael Caál Orozco: I translate from German not into German, so can't help there.
As you already know, I made a few minor changes to the English draft. A couple of other points. (1) The subject of a biographical article should be referred to by their surname alone in the body of the article; thus, "Gertoux" rather than "G. Gertoux". (2) "the garlic of history" and "the perpetual qere" need checking. Yrs, Narky Blert (talk) 09:56, 19 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Chef123455: Sorry, I only write about what I feel like writing about; I don't do requests.
I do recommend that you don't write about yourself or about close friends or relations; see Wikipedia:Conflict of interest. (There's one article I cannot edit for that reason.) Narky Blert (talk) 11:00, 21 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Chef123455: It may not be easy. I did a quick Google search, and nothing jumped out at me as Wikipedia:Reliable sources to get him through Wikipedia:Notability (people). Of course I could be wrong; what do I know?
Writing your first article is hard work, basically because it is your first article. First up, read Wikipedia:Five pillars and Help:Your first article. I'd suggest drafting a new article in your sandbox (link on the top row of your screen). Once you're happy with it, submit it to Wikipedia:Articles for creation for review, and be patient because there's always a backlog. The volunteers who work there aren't rejection merchants; they want to help new editors and to see new articles, and will give good advice.
Do not feel you need do more than skim any of my links, or any other guidelines you fall across. A printed copy of the full Wikipedia:Manual of Style would be a good doorstop for e.g. an aircraft hanger. Narky Blert (talk) 11:31, 21 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Ok thx you my friend you help a lot ❤️ 2A02:8109:EC0:1F2E:B9BC:B47C:397A:9F1B (talk) 11:35, 21 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Chef123455: A couple of other things I've just thought of. (1) Have a look at one or two articles similar to one you plan to write, that'll give you a feel for how it's done. (2) Don't even think of posting a photo unless you've taken it yourself, the hassle is unbelievable. Narky Blert (talk) 12:39, 21 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

it is not easy, do you have an email where I can contact you? but you said he is not relevant for wikepedia then I prefer to leave it 🤷🏼‍♂️ 2A02:8109:EC0:1F2E:B9BC:B47C:397A:9F1B (talk) 12:45, 21 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your recent corrections — much appreciated. There is one item in the article I'm absolutely unsure about, and hoping someone will set straight: "He was commissioned to write a three-act burlesque on Edmond Rostand's Chantecler, named Mik Iier." (http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article16093560) None of the possible readings (Mik Iler / Mjk Iier) look French to me, and I've had a restless night just thinking about having almost certainly published a falsehood. :) As a better linguist than this duffer, do you have any ideas? Doug butler (talk) 21:49, 22 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

(talk page stalker) This book implies that it might be "Mik Ier", with "Ier" maybe meaning "premier", i.e. "first Mik", whatever that might mean. Also see this web site and fr:Modèle:Ier. – Jonesey95 (talk) 22:28, 22 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Doug butler:So that's who wrote "If You Were the Only Girl in the World". I can't remember a time when I didn't know that song; my mother used to sing it.
I'm certain that Jonesey95 has nailed it. I ran what searches I could think of, without trying to guess what the title might be, before looking at his results. (I was trying to put myself in the shoes of a puzzled Australian typesetter staring at a scribble.) I too found that Stanford reference. I'm sure it should be read as Mik Ier, i.e. Mik le premier ("Mik the First"). Why Mik? I have no idea. None of the characters in Rostand's Chantecler has a personal name (see also fr:Chantecler (Rostand)). Neither French WP nor French Wiktionary came up with a suggestion. All I can say is that Mik looks like a plausible French nickname.
Back-searching from the now-known title, I found bnf.fr and worldcat.
The new references all give 1911 as date of first performance, rather than 1909 as in the Morning Herald; and must be right. The play was premiered in 1910.
Veronique is surely Messager's Véronique (premiered 1898, ran for 175 performances, still in the French repertoire).
A good puzzle! Narky Blert (talk) 05:53, 23 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
P.S. "Mik" is male; because if female, the title would be Mik 1ère. Narky Blert (talk) 05:56, 23 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
The BnF reference is a real find. And he published a violin solo from "Mik" in 1914. I presume "le premier Aveu" means first edition? "Mik" is a great name for a presumptuous rooster. Doug butler (talk) 06:39, 23 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Doug butler: He was clearly milking the selections and arrangements market for all it was worth, and why not?
I thought you might like that BnF citation.
"Edition" would be "édition". fr:Aveu corresponds to Confession (law). (There's also a thoroughly obsolete meaning, fr:Aveu (ancien droit), a formal document from a vassal to a feudal lord, which we can probably rule out.) "Le premier Aveu" looks to me like the title of a popular number from the operetta. I'd be prepared to guess-interpret it as "The First Avowal", a declaration of love; but life would be a lot easier if there were a published score. (IMSLP only has Le Trou d'Almanzor.) Growing a Greener World Redirect

[edit]

Hello, Narky Blert. Recently I submitted a request to remove this redirect - Growing a Greener World → UNC-TV#Programming You commented "Keep. It's mentioned in the article, with a little useful information. A quick search turned up some possibly-RS sources which might support an article, though it would be necessary to weed out/prune away the promotional stuff (of which there seems to be lots). I've no objection at all to an article being drafted. Narky Blert (talk) 17:52, 20 March 2020 (UTC)" I have tried to draft an article but I can't seem to get past the fact that it already exists via the redirect. How does one draft an article when you can't remove the redirect? Thanks. Aprentice525 (talk) 13:21, 24 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Aprentice525: Because you're a relatively new editor, I recommend going through the WP:Articles for creation process. It's also a good idea to work on a draft article in your sandbox, which is your personal workspace, until you're happy with it before submitting it to AFC. It may take some time for a reviewer to get round to it (they're always overworked), but they do try to be helpful.
It would also be possible simply to overwrite the existing redirect. However, writing an article is the most difficult thing to do in Wikipedia, and the learning curve is steep. The ideas behind WP:Notability and WP:Reliable sources, which are very important, aren't the simplest things to grasp. That's why I suggest going through the AFC review process for a second opinion. If you just overwrite, some editor might nominate the article for deletion at WP:AFD; and going through that experience is a hassle.
(If you think I never had an article about what I thought was a notable topic deleted in my early days of editing, you'd be wrong.)
Happy editing, and good luck with your article! Narky Blert (talk) 13:43, 24 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there, I'm HasteurBot. I just wanted to let you know that Draft:Hot Rod Heart, a page you created, has not been edited in 5 months. The Articles for Creation space is not an indefinite storage location for content that is not appropriate for articlespace.

If your submission is not edited soon, it could be nominated for deletion. If you would like to attempt to save it, you will need to improve it.

You may request Userfication of the content if it meets requirements.

If the deletion has already occured, instructions on how you may be able to retrieve it are available at WP:REFUND/G13.

Thank you for your attention. HasteurBot (talk) 01:27, 25 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

See Draft talk:Hot Rod Heart#Abandoned draft. Narky Blert (talk) 05:37, 27 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Given your hatnote addition at Draft:Hesitation, it seems like you might have something to add to the discussion at Wikipedia:Redirects for discussion/Log/2020 April 27#Hesitation. Cheers! BD2412 T 03:39, 27 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@BD2412: I'm still thinking about whether to contribute to that RFD, which was how I found your draft. You may have identified an important missing WP:PTOPIC. Major literary examples off the top of my head include Macbeth, Hamlet and Crime and Punishment. Searches are unfortunately infested with non-WP:RS cheat-your-coursework essays. Procrastination is a related topic, as is perhaps conscience.
It's the sort of word where I feel there could be mileage in a DAB page in addition; but only if at least one more full-title match can be found. There would be several WP:PTMs to add as see-also padding, including "He who hesitates is lost". Narky Blert (talk) 05:35, 27 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

What I was there for

[edit]

I just saw your reply to me at Wikipedia:Redirects for discussion/Log/2020 April 16#Explicit sex. Thanks for the laugh. Going by BD2412's comment, I wasn't the only one who was there for that, though. Flyer22 Frozen (talk) 19:02, 29 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Flyer22 Frozen: I didn't !vote in that discussion, because I couldn't make up my mind. Being serious is important, but it doesn't mean having to be humourless - there's one admin who frequently enlivens WP:ANI (a real drama board) with quirky pictures and comments formatted as Burma-Shave ads. Narky Blert (talk) 23:05, 29 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I was really tempted to add a flippant summary to this edit. Allegedly, he's a wasp wing (not to be confused with a fly half). Certes (talk) 14:23, 30 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Certes: Some links are almost too good to change. I swear I once saw Game of Thrones.
A fly-half is not quite the same as a Player's No. 10.
For a mildly tongue-in-cheek maintenance tag, see L'Assomption River. Narky Blert (talk) 14:39, 30 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

DYK for Tanitoluwa Adewumi

[edit]

On 5 May 2020, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Tanitoluwa Adewumi, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that eight-year-old Nigerian refugee Tanitoluwa Adewumi won a New York state chess championship while his family was living in a homeless shelter in Manhattan? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Tanitoluwa Adewumi. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, Tanitoluwa Adewumi), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Disambiguation

[edit]

Hi, you added a disambiguation tag to the word "continuous" in the lead of this article: Surjection of Fréchet spaces.

I do not understand what is ambiguous about the word "continuous" in that statement. What are two different interpretations of that statement?Mgkrupa (talk) 20:14, 10 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Mgkrupa: Continuous is a DAB page, and should not be linked to: User:DPL bot logs such links as errors. Which of the dozen or so mathematics-related links on that page is the correct one here? I'm not a mathematician, and I simply don't know. Yrs, Narky Blert (talk) 20:28, 10 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
(talk page gnome) The statement is not ambiguous, but Continuous is a disambiguation page about continuity in general, which might not give the reader relevant information about what "continuous" means in that sentence. It may be better to use a piped link to a more specific article, such as Continuous linear operator. Certes (talk) 20:32, 10 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Redirect to solve

[edit]

Hi,

as I see Balkan Romance redirects Eastern Romance languages, although it should be Balkan Romance languages, could you fix it? Thank you!(KIENGIR (talk) 22:35, 13 July 2020 (UTC))[reply]

@KIENGIR: Good catch! There's also Balkan Romance substratum, so there's a case for disambiguation or hatnoting of some sort. Eastern Romance also looks like a potential problem: as well as Eastern Romance languages (the current target), there's also Eastern Romance people and Eastern Romance substratum. IMO, turning both redirects Balkan Romance and Eastern Romance into new DAB pages might be the best solution - what do you think? I may need to sleep on this. (I suppose we could take this to WP:RFD if we can't work out the best solution between ourselves; those two redirects have been around for a long time (2015 for Balkan, 2006 for Eastern)). Yrs, Narky Blert (talk) 00:14, 14 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@KIENGIR: OK I've slept on it, and here's what I suggest:
 1. Retarget Balkan Romance to Balkan Romance languages (your proposal).
 2. Hatnote Balkan Romance languages to Balkan Romance substratum. Its a subtopic of Balkan Romance languages, and IMO a DAB page would fall under WP:ONEOTHER
 3. Turn Eastern Romance into a DAB page. The people (Vlachs) and the languages are both important topics. I haven't looked, but I wouldn't be at all surprised if Eastern Romance has some bad links-in from films and the like. I would be happy to clean up the links-in, I do that sort of thing all the time.
 4. Cross-refer Balkan Romance languages and Eastern Romance to each other, by a hatnote and by a DAB page see-also respectively.
Thoughts? Narky Blert (talk) 09:39, 14 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, thank you for your time and care.
As I read both of your reactions all in one, I'd say for 1.->yes, 2.->yes. 3&4 -> would depend, maybe not even necessary since Balkan Romance Languages are one of the subtypes of the Eastern-Romance languages (the other would be the Castelmezzano dialect, check the infobox at the Eastern-Romance languages). This may lead to the conclusion that 3&4 are not even necessary, since they are not in the same level.(KIENGIR (talk) 14:35, 14 July 2020 (UTC))[reply]
@KIENGIR: That suggests these modifications:
3a. Hatnote Eastern Romance to the other two topics, in like manner to (2) above.
4a. Omit, if in your judgment readers can easily find what they want. I included it basically because an editor had targetted Balkan Romance to the wrong article, which suggested there might be some confusion in people's minds.
Reply here if you agree, and I'll get on with it. Narky Blert (talk) 14:47, 14 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
3a->Yes, 4a->omit (because in all language articles infobox shows the ancestry and relation line, with links related, so, no need for cross-reference, neither by hatnote or DAB. Thank You(KIENGIR (talk) 18:01, 14 July 2020 (UTC))[reply]
@KIENGIR: OK, we're agreed. I'll do it all & give you a ping when it's done so that you can check; probably tomorrow morning (it's 7:30PM here, and I'm winding down). Narky Blert (talk) 18:37, 14 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@KIENGIR: 1, 2, 3a  Done. Narky Blert (talk) 10:16, 15 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Thank You! Meanwhile browsing, something took my attention, the Eastern-Romance Substratum is as well redirected to Substrate in Romanian (next to Balkan Romance substratum which is correct), that is a problem, since the Castelmezzano dialect is not a Romanian language. I don't you recently how to solve the best this situation, since I did not find any page caring about Eastern-Romance substrate...either the Substrate in Romanian article should be renamed, or DAB page? What is your opinion? Thank you(KIENGIR (talk) 13:11, 15 July 2020 (UTC))[reply]

@KIENGIR: This is completely out of my field. Is Eastern Romance substratum an actual thing, or is this redirect a misnomer? In either case, it should perhaps be deleted, either (1) to encourage article creation or (2) because it's wrong. The best place to start might be to open a discussion at WP:WikiProject Linguistics, to see if any editor there has an insight. If the conclusion is that it should be deleted, the place to request that is WP:RFD; but with a specialist topic like this, I'd try the WikiProject first. Narky Blert (talk) 13:53, 15 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Borsoka:, do you have any suggestion how to solve this last issue, I'd like to know your opinion before in case go forward? Thank You(KIENGIR (talk) 13:58, 15 July 2020 (UTC))[reply]
It depends on the definition of Eastern Romance and Balkan Romance languages. As far as I remember according to the most widely accepted definitions, all Balkan Romance languages are Eastern Romance languages. I think Eastern Romance substratum did not exist, because the southern Italian dialect and the Romanian variants did not develop from the same substratum. If we list Dalmatian among the Balkan Romance languages, we could hardly talk about a Balkan Romance substratum. Borsoka (talk) 02:54, 16 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Merger proposal

[edit]

I propose to merge National Institute of Fashion Technology Kannur into National Institute of Fashion Technology . I think that the content in the National Institute of Fashion Technology Kannur article can easily be explained in the context of National Institute of Fashion Technology , and the National Institute of Fashion Technology article is of a reasonable size that the merging of National Institute of Fashion Technology Kannur will not cause any problems as far as article size is concerned. @Ignostar: Sorry, I know nothing about this subject. I suggest that you open a WP:MERGE discussion on the Talk Page of National Institute of Fashion Technology. Galak-Z: The Dimensional / Pixel Junk Shooter 1 / Pixel Junk Shooter 2

[edit]

Hello, I'm here to talk to you about the wikipedia article "Galak-Z: The Dimensional". In your opinion, the game publishers are not clear? I do not understand the problem. On Playstation 4, the game was published by Sony Computer Entertainment (I put a link) but in North America only. In the rest of the world it has been published by 17-bit. On PC it was published worldwide by 17-bit. On Switch it was published worldwide by Golem Consulting (I also put a link in the article to prove it). It is not uncommon for a game not to be published by the same person depending on the platform. For example Detroit: Become Human was published on PS4 by Sony Interactive Entertainment and on PC by Quantic Dream;) Galak-Z is not the only game to have several publishers depending on the platform. Sorry for my average English but I am French. I look forward to your response, good day to you :) P.S : I just noticed that you have also made modifications for Pixel Junk shooter 1 and 2. I have made some modifications to make it clearer. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Dragounis (talkcontribs) 18:45, 15 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Dragounis: Galak-Z: The Dimensional links to the DAB page WW. Links to DAB pages are errors; see WP:INTDAB. I'm guessing that in context WW means "worldwide". As I've said in my hidden notes on the dn tags, that's a commonplace word, and shouldn't be linked. Narky Blert (talk) 11:17, 16 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I understood the problem with the 3 articles. I removed the "ww" link for the 3 articles, now we can no longer click on it. The problem is therefore resolved :) Galak-Z : The Dimensional : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Galak-Z:_The_Dimensional PixelJunk Shooter 1 : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PixelJunk_Shooter PixelJunk Shooter 2 : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PixelJunk_Shooter_2 — Preceding unsigned comment added by Dragounis (talkcontribs) 19:35, 16 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Thanx

[edit]

Thank you for the contribution--especially the link--on Persecution of pagans. I just wan ted to let you know I am putting "whom" back in place of who as it is the correct usage. It is the object of the verb 'calls' in that sentence--you can tell by substituting "him" as in OHLA calls 'him'--so whom is the correct word there not who. Thank you for the rest! Jenhawk777 (talk) 21:32, 19 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Jenhawk777: I have no strong feelings about 'who'/'whom', except a minor sentiment that 'whom' feels unnatural in modern British English except directly after a preposition. It's not at all important, and I'm not going to dig out my copy of Fowler's Modern English Usage or whatever to try to support either position.
One thing we can probably agree on, an edit I made earlier today, to something like "X was a person that was born in Y". That rather than who for a person? Narky Blert (talk) 22:52, 19 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
You are absolutely right about a person not being a that. I generally dislike using many thats, but for some reason some editors love them and go around inserting thats everywhere willy nilly! I do not get the obsession! It is verbal clutter in my view. Get rid of all the thats you feel like!
At any rate, the who/whom thing may be an 'across the pond' kind of difference since I'm American, but my English Handbook--which is no doubt not the same as yours since we rebels liked to make up our own rules regardless of consistency or the lack of it--supports whom. If you don't care, then that's totally cool, since I have already changed it back. Thanx again, Jenhawk777 (talk) 23:06, 19 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Jenhawk777: There's a difference between British and American usage, in that James Murray and his successors attempted to describe the one and Noah Webster and his successors to prescribe the other.
One of my father's friends once asked him to explain the rule which defined some feature of English. He replied, there are no rules, only what feels right and wrong to a native speaker. IMO that is true for every variety of that very flexible language.
I only recently had the full joke in this clip properly explained to me. Barbara Billingsley, who played that stereotypical Jewish/Black mother, would never have met anyone either Jewish or Black in her best-known role as June Cleaver in Leave It to Beaver. Narky Blert (talk) 23:46, 19 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
OK I'm laughing out loud, but I'm totally confused by this: Barbara Billingsley, who played that stereotypical Jewish/Black mother. Say what?! Jive was jazz man and that's not a racially exclusive club. Anyway, back to English. One of my favorite sayings is that Brits and Americans are divided by a common language. It seems to fit!
I also wanted to let you know I found another one of this guy's articles. I'm amazed no one has done anything about him--his articles are OR, and plagiarism from WP and blogs! I ran the copy-vio on it multiple times but you still caught one I didn't. You rock dude!
I'm glad to have met you. You seem pretty chill. Hope to see you around some more, Jenhawk777 (talk) 03:34, 20 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Britannia (TV series)

[edit]

Thanks for pointing out the error in my edit on the Britannia page ('various'). Wasn't sure how to reference the various sources all linked to on the one page, and am at work. 92.40.168.228 (talk) 16:40, 24 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

No worries, I've seen worse! When I created the DAB page Various, I had to fix several dozen links.

Redlinked biologists

[edit]

Several biologists have 50+ redlinks from taxonomy articles. Do you know anyone who could verify whether they're notable and consider writing articles about them?

I can find more if they're useful to anyone. Certes (talk) 20:48, 28 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Certes: I haven't looked to see if David G Smith stylises his name that way or if the title is a MOS:INITIALS error. (I have come across one article about an American who wrote his middle initial with no full stop, because that was how he'd been christened.)
I find red a much more appealing link colour than orange, and thoroughly approve of ill links.
Anyone with 50+ links is almost certainly notable. I wouldn't be surprised if many of them have taxa named in their honour. (I don't think it's mentioned in WP:NBIO or elsewhere, but IMO having something permanent named after you is often good evidence of notability.}
A challenge with lesser-known naturalists is that the Wikipedia biography is often the biography, which can require considerable research, not merely extracting the salient details from elsewhere. As examples of my own, I might mention James Hardy (naturalist), Richard Brinsley Hinds, Alfred Nicholson Leeds and Charles Stokes (collector). (I remember that it took me three-quarters of an hour to find first Hinds' initials then his given names. The fact that he had been so forgotten was scandalous. If you know your history of science, you should be able to guess from the lede the name of the ship whose work Sulphur continued and the identity of the captain's companion.)
One idea might be to post items from your list on relevant WikiProject Talk Pages, in case an editor feels like doing the legwork, and see how it goes. (I post collections of difficult DABlinks on such Talk Pages from time to time. Some WikiProjects are assiduous in clearing them out, others are useless.) I haven't looked to see if any are already on "missing article" lists. Narky Blert (talk) 07:21, 29 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks; good plan. WT:WikiProject Fishes looks active and should cover most of these people. Certes (talk) 12:09, 29 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
[edit]

Narky Blert, thanks for all your efforts in dablink repair, such as at Madhu (actor) and many others. How are you finding the links which need repair, are you using PetScan?

By the way: if you're interested in the other angle of dab repair, i.e, the "find and enumerate" part, please be aware of a recent upgrade to Template:Dablinks which permits you to list up to ten articles that need repair in the template itself. For examples in the wild, see Turismo Carretera, Mayors in New Zealand, or Chin people. There's an outstanding request to get DPL bot to populate this automatically, but I don't know when, or if that might happen. Mathglot (talk) 22:36, 2 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Mathglot: Thanks for the thanks. I mostly use Disambiguation pages with links. There's plenty there to be getting on with, and I cycle through it. I started out on DABfixing with Category:Articles with links needing disambiguation. It had 10,800 entries; once I and others had got it down to 4,500, I looked for another report to attack. I tried several, but was duplicating effort. I eventually found DPWL, where it's rare to come across a link which another editor has just fixed. It had something like 48,000 entries (see WP:TDD#Table 1 Column 1). IIRC, my first run took eight months; there was stuff there which hadn't been looked at in a decade. It has taken me as little as six weeks, but that's drifted out to a couple of months; it depends on how many warm bodies are doing heavy-duty DABfixing.
For templates, there's already Templates with disambiguation links. Other editors work that each day, and I leave it to them. I also largely pass by the "new horrors" report, WP:TDD#Today's highlights. I'm inefficient there; others have better tools and greater patience, and work it much more quickly than I can.
The one report I feel the lack of is, one which would list all the DABlinks in a page (see WP:TDD#Table 3, left-hand columns); not so much to find the links (I can see them because I have "Preferences/Gadgets/Display links to disambiguation pages in orange" enabled), but to drop as-polite-as-I-can-manage notifications on the Talk Pages of editors who don't bother with WP:TESTLINK. The worst pages show up in Category:Pages with excessive dablinks, which I've started to look at occasionally for variety's sake. (The edit history of List of American television programs, which two of us worked on, shows how bad some of those can be; check the timestamps.) (I'm also watching for any reappearance of this idiot, who was a real timesink for multiple DABfixers until I spotted a pattern and put a couple of hours into digging out IPs.)
It's always a pleasure to meet another editor who's active in several languages. (I routinely check home language when DABfixing. There may be a good link there, or additional information to help solve a problem. If home language links to a DAB page and I get the answer another way - hey, let's fix that link too.) Yrs, Narky Blert (talk) 04:30, 3 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Wow, this was an amazing education, thank you so much for taking the time to explain these things to me! I'm going to have to permalink this and add it to my Tips page, so I can find it again. I had no idea about your languages till I checked your user page, and you're right—that gave me a warm and fuzzy feeling as well, to know there's someone else out there. You're comment about interwikis reminded me of a recent concern, but I'll open that under a new header, as it deserves its own airing.
Thanks so much again for this great information about dablinks! Mathglot (talk) 06:27, 3 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for cleaning up the remaining Indian film edits. I did a small fraction of the fixing but never got around to finishing the job. I think some edits may be good-faith replacement of our cast list by a text list from elsewhere with added [[]] but it's still tedious to undo.
We have a list of Articles With Multiple Dablinks. There are tools to list dablinks from individual pages and help you fix them. (Warning: external IP address. https: is available but the certificate is for its expired subdomain dispenser.info.tm.) Certes (talk) 10:55, 3 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
When the .info domain was introduced, it rapidly acquired a terrible name among spamhunters. One of my friends claimed that there was one one good .info site, but I found a second and later a third. Turkmenistan (.tm) must make loads of cash for having an ISO country code which looks like ™. Narky Blert (talk) 02:18, 15 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Interwikis in citations

[edit]

So, I'm a big interwiki fan as well. I could say a lot about the topic, but what prompted me to comment just now, is a recent bout I had with some very odd behavior in an article with an interwiki in a citation template, in one of the "link" fields like author1-link. You can get a sneak preview of this behavior at this revision of "André Diethelm", by mousing over or clicking the "Français" interwiki in the language sidebar. I opened a discussion about it at WT:CS1. Reason I mention this, is that I haven't heard back from Trappist yet, although it's only been a couple of days, and there's no rush. Trappist is "Mr Citation Templates", and I'm not sure how much he is interested in the wikilink aspect of them, which is definitely a very minor part. It also occurs to me, that my explanation at the Help:CS1 page might not have been clear, or I may not have explained well why this is an issue, or what should be done about it. If you're willing, could you watch the discussion, and if there's nothing in a week or so, maybe consider weighing in, assuming you think it's worthwhile? It might benefit by having another voice, of someone who's familiar with interwikis. The discussion is at WT:CS1#Please add param error checking for interwikis lacking leading colon. Thanks! Mathglot (talk) 07:19, 3 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Mathglot: I claim that I've linked to or translated a language if there is any kind of article in that language in the parent Wikidata group. I confess that I've translated a couple of articles purely to add a language or two to my collection. (Arino was a special case; I wrote it to fix linking problems in the biographies of the two notable residents. It's as stubby as it gets because Google Translate doesn't know any of the three parent-article languages, and my Russian isn't good enough to make up the difference.)
|authorlink= you say? Most fields in cite templates will handle whatever style of link you throw at them, but not that one. You do get a big, red error message if you try to insert an ill link; I hadn't tried the "[[:" syntax, which I like less - it lays WP:EASTEREGGs, especially if the target is in a non-Roman script. Your story of that silent error is alarming. I've got round the problem by adding a note outside the template (see e.g. Henri Fertet ref. 4; I'm pleased to be able to say that my Réseau guy got 12,000 views on the front page). I suppose the |others= field would work too, but it's a choice between degrees of tackiness.
I know the editor of whom you speak. He's reverted me because I had added a disambiguation needed tag to an |authorlink= field and it broke the template syntax. Which is better for the encyclopaedia - a pretty-looking link which points to the wrong place, or an ugly maintenance tag flagging a problem which someone might know how to fix, but only if alerted to it? I'm reminded of something about woods and trees. Yrs, Narky Blert (talk) 08:50, 3 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
No need for an ill, and |authorlink= handles an interwiki just fine. Fertet per Tournoux, you say?[1][2]
The point is, it works just fine if you get the syntax right. I wouldn't even mind if it broke with the "wrong" syntax and didn't link it; but it doesn't just break, it does something evil. And anyway, it works just fine without the colon as an interwiki in running text—:fr:Le Monde and fr:Le Monde (with, and without leading colon, respectively) generate fr:Le Monde and fr:Le Monde, and both links work identically; the leading colon is optional. So it's in the citation family of templates, apparently where the "[[:" syntax is required. Just don't try it in the publisher field or any other field of a citation without the leading colon, and don't try |authorlink=fr:Raymond Tournoux without that leading colon either. Not only does it have bizarre results, but the Wikidata bot comes along minutes later, and will link your Fertet fellow to the French Le Monde article, or to authorlinked Tournoux (depending, I think, on who appeared first) and will publish it in the language sidebar of your article. Do it right, and it's all smiles. Mathglot (talk) 09:27, 3 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Update: according to Help:Interlanguage_links#Method, the version without leading colon only works on Talk pages and Meta, which may explain why fr:Le Monde works here. The essential point that leading colon must be used in articles, remains. Mathglot (talk) 23:11, 4 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Disambiguation

[edit]

Hello, I saw that you were a participant on a discussion about deleting the Adam Griffith disambiguation. So I wonder if you can help me. I started an article for Theodore Johnson (Tuskegee Airmen), and now I see there are three Theodore Johnson's and one is a serial killer. Do you think we need a disambiguation page? Also if needed would you create one. I do not want to screw it up. Thanks much! Wm335td (talk) 18:14, 9 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Wm335td:  Done. Easy if you know how, and IMO a DAB page was needed. I picked up a couple of near-matches, and added them as see-alsos. I added a redirect hatnote to Theophilus Johnson, for the benefit of anyone who might be looking for a Theo and found themself looking at the wrong page.
Good work on your airman (yes, I did know of the Tuskegee Airmen; in general terms, at any rate).
You might want to open a WP:RM discussion at Talk:Theodore Johnson. I doubt whether any of the three full-name matches is WP:PTOPIC, but have serious doubts as to whether it is the obscure state representative. The moves to propose would be (1) Theodore Johnson -> Theodore Johnson (politician) and (2) Theodore Johnson (disambiguation) -> Theodore Johnson. If you do, ping me, and I will attempt a proper appraisal. Narky Blert (talk) 18:55, 9 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@TomStar81: Always as an extra. It categorises the redirect, but makes no other change. See e.g. the latest edits of Ghost Stories and Missed Call for recent similar examples. You get the feeling it will have zero effect on editors who don't check their links before posting, but you never know; and it automatically makes the redirect unprintworthy also. Inviting you to take place in a discussion about Chris Mullin page

[edit]

Hi, how are you?

As you know, right now the Chris Mullin page leads directly to the basketball player, which I find a tad ridiculous, as outside of the US, hardly anyone has heard of him, and in Britain when they say Chris Mullin they clearly refer to the politician Chris Mullin (politician).

I've started a discussion on the Talk:Chris Mullin page, under the title Talk:Chris Mullin#Requested move 22 August_2020, and would really appreciate it if you could voice your piece there.

Hi,

kindly ask your help again. The Hungarian State, and/or "Hungarian state" & other variants redirect to Government of National Unity (Hungary), which is erroneus, since it's about a government. We are still in process on several other important matters that will end up with a page on standardized setup & editing of tables etc. as a guideline after which we can add more info to the talk page for all new T'bred related articles where we insert this "box" racing|class=start|importance=low. This would be a notation for editors in doubt to refer to the Project's guidelines and suggestions. As well, we will be doing a "helpful hints" page for such minor things as I just did on that Bayakoa Stakes page by inserting the stable owner's name in brackets and getting full names to replace just an initial. Thanks again. Good input is always appreciated at the Project. Stretchrunner (talk) 12:59, 23 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Stretchrunner: My first go at a possible form of words is, "There is WP:CONSENSUS that lists of results at horse-racing events should be in newest-first order; see Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Horse racing#Important (lengthy) information about horse race table setup" or similar. Feel free to tweak.
If you can hammer out consensus on how to present horse racing info, it could be a good idea to link to it on the Project's Main Page itself. For an example, see WP:WikiProject Classical music#Guidelines. Consistency is important! Narky Blert (talk) 13:25, 23 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, I didn't express myself well. That's what will be done. Stretchrunner (talk) 13:45, 23 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Thoughts from a warm body

[edit]

I was interested to read your response to FIXDABLINKS, especially the comment about needing more warm bodies. For the past couple of years, I've done far less disambiguating as I've moved on to fixing unambiguous but wrong links, much as we (mainly you) did so successfully with surnames in taxon articles. (I recently finished a pass of easily mislinked cities such as Tripoli, Lebanon, though I'm sure I missed many, and am currently working through surnames in descending order of link count. It's hard to measure progress, as we have no list of outstanding errors. I haven't even looked at SIAs.) My rationale was that no one else seemed to be doing that, whereas we have several able disambiguators and an active wikiproject to coordinate your efforts. However, I'm wondering whether it's time to move back to more general disambiguation. Any thoughts? Certes (talk) 23:07, 26 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Certes: You will appreciate that I was making a rhetorical point. I have seen comments in move requests to the effect of "Don't worry about the broken links, DABfixers love repairing them".
In 2016, I was a moderator on a well-known social website. There were about 40 of us, of whom a dozen or so were highly active, struggling to keep it free of spam and to a lesser extent trolls. I was beginning to reach out to the Spanish-language site, which was untended, and full of spam (mainly copyright violations), porn and underagers; other of my colleagues specialised in German, Portuguese and Vietnamese (where spamming is a thriving cottage industry). Management decided that, having satisfactorily redesigned the site to make it less user-friendly, they would take all moderation in-house; because obviously a couple of junior employees with other responsibilities and some home-written filters would be more efficient than a rabble of volunteers. Or at any rate, more controllable. They removed our tools, and we all went off to do something more useful. I settled on Wikipedia. (That site has since fallen off the Quantcast ratings. Strange.)
I started out on serious disambiguating with Category:Articles with links needing disambiguation. After I'd worked through it, and revisited some of the earliest stuff with what I had learnt, I sought another project. I looked at some of the high-profile recent-DABlink reports, and realised I was duplicating effort. I settled on DPwL, and have been cycling through it ever since. (I haven't been keeping count of the times, and don't really want to know.)
All bad links degrade the encyclopaedia. Ever since User:DPL bot coughed into life a decade ago, DABlinks have been easily findable; and in any case, a reader who clicks on a DABlink should see that something is wrong, and with any luck find what they want. Other types of bad, or even inferior, link are worse; they are difficult to find and can be actively misleading.
Making improvements which neither remove error messages nor are counted is gnomery at its purest. Keep doing what you're doing.
You might want to have a look at DIY. It's an unfortunate fact that DIY musicians, who often follow the DIY ethos, may be reviewed in DIY magazine.
I’ve never been any good at DIY, "Do it yourself" would always be my reply. Yrs, Narky Blert (talk) 06:37, 27 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the useful comments. Yes, Wikipedia would be a better place if editors did worry about the broken links, which is one reason we need something like FIXDABLINKS_to guide them and to wave under the noses of repeat offenders.
I think you're right that I should carry on. Many of my edits could be done by a trained chimp, but finding where they're needed is something of an art, and I doubt that much of what I'm doing is duplicated. One area where I could benefit from help is in compiling a list of Frequently Mislinked Articles where periodic re-checking might be worthwhile. User:Certes/misdirected links#Examples is a start but I hadn't noticed DIY, and I expect that other editors have adopted similar pages where the topic at the base name is not what comes first to many minds. Certes (talk) 09:49, 27 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Oh dear. Certes (talk) 09:57, 27 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Certes: My problems are the converse of yours. It's easy to find pages with DABlinks; most singletons solve themselves, but the interesting ones are those that don't.
Have you watched Irving Finkel's YT videos on The Royal Game of Ur? He's an entertaining speaker, and the game looks a good one which offers the skillful player many opportunities to relieve a less-skilled opponent of superfluous money. (Note: sleight of hand is also a feat of skill.) Narky Blert (talk) 16:05, 27 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Interesting, thanks. I am a keen board gamer and have played backgammon occasionally but not come across that piece of history. Certes (talk) 18:33, 27 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Certes: I'm a crap backgammon player, but I could see the back game possibilities. "By the Gods, luck is not with me today! You have five stones off and I have but none! Shall we double the stakes, because that might make luck turn in my favour?"
The tetrahedral dice are unusual outside D&D. Narky Blert (talk) 21:05, 27 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I think I'll institute a Surname Page of the Day award. The first winner is Cappelletti. How on earth do we fix that without offending anyone? Certes (talk) 13:39, 28 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Certes: I'd redlink the pasta as Cappelletti (pasta) with a bluelink on the same line to List of pasta (which helpfully linked to the surname page...), delete the descriptive guff and excess links per MOS:DABENTRY, delete the pic per MOS:DABICON and the citation per WP:DABREF. The mercenaries can stay, they're mentioned in Stratioti (which too linked to the surname page). Finally, I'd recategorise as surname; Even one non-surname entry poisons a surname page; and here there are three, including the bridge convention which is always called just "Capelletti" (and which I wouldn't play if you paid me; I've found it extremely desirable to play against). Narky Blert (talk) 14:01, 28 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Done; thanks. All links were for the pasta. Should we redirect the redlink to List of pasta which has minimal information? Certes (talk) 14:38, 28 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Certes: I wouldn't redirect, but leave it red so as to encourage article creation. I added an ill link to List of pasta; there are articles in 7 non-English WPs. Narky Blert (talk) 14:44, 28 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Wikiproject Military history coordinator election nominations open

[edit]

Nominations for the upcoming project coordinator election are now open. A team of up to ten coordinators will be elected for the next year. The project coordinators are the designated points of contact for issues concerning the project, and are responsible for maintaining our internal structure and processes. They do not, however, have any authority over article content or editor conduct, or any other special powers. More information on being a coordinator is available here. If you are interested in running, please sign up here by 23:59 UTC on 14 September! Voting doesn't commence until 15 September. If you have any questions, you can contact any member of the coord team. Peacemaker67 (click to talk to me) 02:06, 1 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Bob Israel

[edit]

The Bob Israel referenced here is not one of the Robert/Bob Israel subjects currently on the disambiguation page, which I have been largely curating. It appears that this particular Bob Israel is a jazz musician (part of a group called "Total Eclipse") in the Washington DC area who also has a tiny record label (First American) and is an event coordinator. I am not sure that he would merit a Wikipedia biography according to our notability standards. What do you think? I'd be happy to create his biography, if it's seen as important to include in the encyclopedia. - AppleBsTime (talk) 12:54, 5 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@AppleBsTime: Good research! If you think he's wikinotable, go ahead and write the article (but I suspect you think he isn't). If you've got some citations, post them here if you like, and I'll give you my opinion.
If you don't think he's notable, the most helpful thing for our readers may be to remove the link, and to add an efn footnote by his name. You'd need to add a Notes section (with notelist) immediately above the non-existent References section. If you've got a WP:V citation or two tying him to the album, so much the better; you wouldn't have to prove notability, just the fact.
Mind you, I doubt that the album article itself (unsourced since 2006!) would survive WP:AFD, and that might be the simpler solution... (I see you've voted recently twice at AFD, and were right each time.) Yrs, Narky Blert (talk) 13:39, 5 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for sharing that template and that cool AFD link with me! I keep learning more every day about nifty gadgets on Wikipedia. Sources for the "jazz" Bob Israel would be limited. There is an article from March 16, 1989 in The Evening Sun (Baltimore) about the "Blues Alley" nightclub, with many comments by Bob Israel, "marketing director" of Blues Alley. But the content is about Blues Alley, not about Mr. Israel. I note also that the only venue where "Bob Israel's Jazz Orchestra" and "Bob Israel's Big Band" ever seemed to land a gig was at Blues Alley. Other indications of limited reliable sources are this, this, this, and this. Nice enough guy, but "jamming with friends" is not material that builds a Wikipedia biography. I think I'll try an AFD on the Pamela Moore album, as it appears the original author of that page was a single-purpose editor, probably looking for a promotional boost in sales. - AppleBsTime (talk) 14:01, 5 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@AppleBsTime: I've looked at those citations (bar #1, which needs a subscription) and agree with the whole of your assessment - more about the club than about him, local musician, probably good for a fun evening out, but not wikinotable.
I collect handy-looking WikiGadgets.
If you're thinking of posting at WP:AFD, make sure to do a WP:BEFORE search. Two or three pages of a search should be enough. I suspect that for a never re-released album there won't be anything, but you never know; I've saved a couple of articles about Bollywood films which I was angling to delete by finding a review or two, and adding them.
Notability standards were lower in WP's early days, there are some very thin articles still around. Yrs, Narky Blert (talk) 14:17, 5 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
And now I realize in my haste that I mistook "Washington DC" for "Washington state", so the "Bob Israel" on First American records' smash-hit album "Take a Look" is not even the Bob Israel of Blues Alley. - AppleBsTime (talk) 14:32, 5 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
After further thought, if Pamela Moore is to be considered a notable musician (and I think that is not in question), it's important enough that her first recorded album be included in Wikipedia. So, that meant referencing it, not nominating it for deletion. I guess deep down, I am an "Inclusionist". - AppleBsTime (talk) 15:34, 5 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@AppleBsTime: As an inclusionist myself, I approve of WP:RESCUE-type work. Narky Blert (talk) 15:39, 5 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Regarding disambiguation

[edit]

Hi, I have noticed that you edited Amanat's disambiguation page Amanat Ali but here is that article which you need to see and add this to the disambiguation page of Amanat's ali Draft:Amanat_Ali_(born_1987) and kindly remove born 1987 when you move the page.

There are four Amanat Ali in Pakistan in which two are dead and two are alive, and all four are from the musician's family. --103.12.122.136 (talk) 11:24, 7 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

It can't be added to the DAB page while it's still a draft. Add it to the DAB page only when it's in mainspace. Narky Blert (talk) 11:30, 7 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I understand Narky but can this be remove (born 1987)? it should be empty.

--103.12.122.136 (talk) 11:50, 7 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Because there's more than one Amanat Ali, the title needs a disambiguator (as Robert McClenon has already pointed out). The other three are all singers as well, and the one in draft has no third element to his name; so his birth year does look the best way of doing it. It's what I'd do. Notice

The article Potomac Crossing has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Non-notable subdivision

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Apologies for the template. Rotary joint

[edit]

Re [2], the rotary joint in this case carries two compressed helium lines and an electrical signal, so it's partly like a slip ring and partly something that we don't seem to cover here. I'm not sure how to resolve that! Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 21:27, 20 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Mike Peel: That's what it looked like to me, though I couldn't visualise the gas line element (especially a dual one). Is it something like a Ground glass joint#Ball-and-socket joints? (I had to google for those, the hatnote on ball-and-socket joint was misleading.) Those allow some flexion, but I can envisage metal or plastics versions which would enable full rotation as well. Helium is tricky to contain, so the seal would have to be good. Or is there only partial rotation, when a pair of flexible pipes would work (twist not a problem)? If we don't have an article, an inline or efn footnoted explanation (ideally with a citation which includes a drawing) may be the most helpful thing for readers. Narky Blert (talk) 04:36, 21 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
It's continuous rotation. It's described in [3] (in particular see Fig. 9), and is manufactured by [4] (in Japanese). Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 19:46, 25 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Mike Peel: It's only a small (though essential) bit of the whole device. How about something like "a specialised rotary seal, combining an O-ring seal [if that's what it is] for the gas connection and a slip ring for the electrical one"? I'm looking for wording which most readers can just pass over thinking "OK, got it" without being sidetracked.
(I remember an edit I made, a couple of years ago, about a video game which used an advanced computer graphics technique. I could have linked to a highly technical WP article; but decided that all the average reader would want was a brief layman's description of how those clever shadow effects were produced.) Windows on ARM

[edit]

You write "Links to DAB pages are errors per WP:INTDAB" while it actually says "are typically errors". Yes, it also states "the community has adopted the procedure of rerouting all" (because of some issues, also affecting you?), but it seems this is a very good exception. Windows on ARM is not likely to mean something completely different, and I actually mean it to apply to both current uses (and all I could foresee added there, in case we get Windows 11...). I do see "The exceptions, when an intentional link to a disambiguation page is appropriate", but not sure I can follow it like "Windows on ARM (see the source here). What bad effects are for keeping as I did? It's not clear to me how to follow WP:HOWTODAB. Maybe it's a case of WP:Ignore all rules. comp.arch (talk) 17:46, 12 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

A stalker writes: @Comp.arch: WP:HOWTODAB is about deliberately linking to a disambiguation page when referring to all or many of its entries together, e.g. The word Mercury has many meanings. However, Julia (programming language) has one specific meaning, which I think from the context is Windows 10 on AArch64. We don't have an article on that exact topic. The nearest I can find is Windows 10 Mobile or perhaps Windows RT#Successors. Certes (talk) 18:16, 12 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I was deliberately linking to Windows on ARM (not at first, but later with my revert). If the context had been "Windows 10 on AArch64" (only) then yes, you're right (but there's no good single link for that). I wasn't liking saying it was explicitly supported, on the opposite, I was saying it, and any Windows on ARM wasn't supported. comp.arch (talk) 18:22, 12 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Comp.arch: Is Windows on ARM a big enough topic for a bca, or for a section in some article or other? It wouldn't need to be very long, and a paragraph or two could be much more informative to readers (such as me, I still don't know what it is) than a DAB page. Narky Blert (talk) 18:45, 12 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I was going by ref 112, which specifically mentions ARM64 and AArch64. However, I expect you're right that Windows RT on ARM32 (and plenty of other combinations) won't support Julia either. Do we even need to mention unsupported platforms at all? Certes (talk) 18:49, 12 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I felt it needed to mention Mac transition to Apple Silicon at the Julia article (and just mentioned Windows as a side-note), even if not explicitly supported, yet. Since it probably will be in the recent future. Also it's not only about what's explicitly supported, but what can be supported, and Windows probably can just as well (you can compile from source for ARM, I'm guessing for Windows too, and binaries provided for Linux). While Apple has such a page, it might be too soon for Microsoft, their implementation doesn't seem as good, and the (long-term) plan isn't there to ditch Intel. But I can very well see that article expanded, at least to a stub (would fix our problem) or moved to List of Microsoft Windows versions (and Windows on ARM made a redirect). To be fair, when I think about it, Windows Phone 7 (all Phone my now discontinued) only ever supported ARM, so for that it's a major implicit feature. I wouldn't make a big deal of it yet for desktop Windows, there's not even a separate Windows on Itanium or for PowerPC or Alpha chips, also once supported. comp.arch (talk) 19:14, 12 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Comp.arch: I like well-written stub articles. Narky Blert (talk) 20:04, 12 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry

I thought my DAB link was OK when commented, having (possibly mis)remembered someone telling me that, and I reverted before reading the rule you linked to. I'll have another look tomorrow and work out how best to address it, being too tired now. Laterthanyouthink (talk) 12:30, 18 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

(I made the mistake of looking at the latest notification first!) Laterthanyouthink (talk) 12:34, 18 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Laterthanyouthink: No worries, we've all done worse! (And I've come across 10-year editors and admins who didn't know that rule.) Narky Blert (talk) 12:44, 18 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for fixing those, and for your gracious response. I was so tired last night (not to mention sick of the long and winding editing road that those breweries and Lion took me on for several days!) that I initially thought you'd just undone it because you thought I hadn't intended to link to the DAB page. Now that I have properly read and understood the rule, I will remember it in future (I hope). Thanks for all of the excellent work you do, and happy holidays Laterthanyouthink (talk) 01:55, 19 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Laterthanyouthink: Topics with messy sources can be both frustrating and satisfying, and you did a lot of work on those three breweries. BTW, I approve of your hidden "intentional" note; I have one I use in a boilerplate file. Happy Holidays to you too! Narky Blert (talk) 07:36, 19 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Hog Farm: Drum, Nevada County, California was listed in until I just took it out. That's cleared the links-in (there were over 50). It would be worth checking to see if any other of those deleted California backlots are in templates or have other links-in.
I've WP:ROBIN swapped Drum, Placer County, California and Drum, California per WP:PRECISE. Let me know if any other of these deletions results in a redundant DAB page, and I'll be happy to do the same.

Oneupsmanship: This painting turned the friendly rivalry between Edward Redfield and Elmer Schofield into
a feud. Schofield was a frequent houseguest at Redfield's farm, upstream from New Hope, Pennsylvania,
and the two would go out painting together, competing to capture the better view. Redfield served on the jury
for the 1904 Annual Exhibition of the Carnegie Institute; at which, despite Redfield's opposition, Across the
River
was awarded the Gold Medal and $1,500 prize. It was not until a 1963 interview that the 93-year-old
Redfield revealed the painting as the cause of the 40-year feud between them. Schofield may have painted it
in England, but a blindsided Redfield knew that this was a view of the Delaware River, from his own front yard!
@BoringHistoryGuy: I can't better that pic! There are, unfortunately, plenty of mistakes - not only in WP - to keep us all occupied for a looong time. I'm currently struggling with the biography of a minor, but notable, C18 composer; whose entry in The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians (the gold standard secondary WP:RS for classical music) says he was "not a society man". Well, I have a baron and a count nearer to his time who say exactly the opposite. The Law of Holes does not apply. Narky Blert (talk) 19:03, 26 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. I've had some experience with challenging authorities that refused to correct things, even after presented with evidence that proved them wrong. I knew the adage, but never heard it called "Law of Holes." I like it. BoringHistoryGuy (talk) 19:30, 26 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
