Nokia icons[edit]

Hi there,

Thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia.

I noticed that you've included a number of "menu icons" from Nokia phones in the relevant articles.

Firstly, since these are icons that were originally created by Nokia (or someone associated with them), they can't be uploaded to Commons as your "own work" and will probably be removed.

Commons is only for images that are either non-copyrighted or have been made available under a "free license" by the copyright holder. As you aren't the copyright holder, you're unable to do this personally.

If a case can be made for them being legitimate under English Wikipedia's "fair use" rules for non-free content, you can upload them locally to en.wikipedia (not Commons).

Secondly (and this bit is more my personal opinion), I'm not 100% convinced that focusing on one arbitrary aspect of the interface benefits the article. Especially in cases like Nokia 3310 where there are multiple variants that are less likely to be justified as "fair use". But that's arguably a separate discussion.

Icons discussion[edit]

Hi there,

Following on from the post above, I've opened a discussion asked for some third party opinion on whether it's possible to keep the icons in the articles as "fair use" and whether or not it would be beneficial to do so anyway. You might wish to contribute at Talk:Nokia_3310#UI_menu_icon_inclusion.
