Mediation at WP:FICT

I'm suggesting we ask for mediation to help build teh guidance at Wikipedia:Notability (fiction). What I propose is that a mediator be the only person to edit the project page itself and be the one to guide discussion and discern consensus. I've proposed it at Wikipedia_talk:Notability_(fiction)#Mediation. As a past participant in the lengthy debates, I'd appreciate your input and hopefully your agreement. I restored the category. It's a personal statement by a Wikipedian, and that it's true of all Wikipedians is irrelevant. I read it as "I'm like you, I put my shoes on one foot at a time." The Category itself was deleted in 2006, I have no comment on that. Well, there are words that come, unbidden, into my mind, but I won't write them. It's fairly firmly established that users may categorize themselves in categories that don't have a corresponding category description page. Off the top of my head, Category:Rouge admins comes to mind. As long as the category doesn't attack an editor or imply a role not held ("Oversighters that poop"), I don't see an issue here. --MZMcBride (talk) 16:58, 9 June 2009 (UTC)

Your concerns

This and this point to answers for your questions. Short version: in one arbitration he resigned his ops and retired under a cloud; shortly after retirement a second case opened in which his conduct would have been examined if he hadn't retired. The Committee required him to contact them if he wished to return to editing at a topic. Afterward a new account became active at the topic, got blocked for actions there, and disrupted a featured article candidate. The new account turned out to be Jossi. Wikipedia:Requests for comment/User page indexing

Hi, this may be a valid issue, but I think you need to provide more information on how noindexing would cause those problems. Aren't these wiki sites using database dumps? Excluding userpages from those dumps doesn't seem to be an option, and certainly isn't affected by noindexing. And Wikipedia search will still be available for manual searches by users of those sites. Disembrangler (talk) 07:05, 29 June 2009 (UTC)

Some use database dumps, some export individual files using special:export, some just copy and paste then attribute via template or by copy/pasting the edit history to the talk page. Using Wikipedia search doesn't help the guy who's hunting down information that might have come from Wikipedia or not, but doesn't know ahead of time.

For example, lets say you are looking for the author of a userscript that you're using that just got broken on your wiki. Searching the name of that script will most likely lead you to their user page of the wiki they're most active on. -- Ned Scott 07:34, 29 June 2009 (UTC)

Thanks, but it would be better I think to edit your statement rather than tack this exchange on. No-one's endorsed it yet, and it'll be clearer. (And it is permitted.) Also on a point of substance: can you give examples of wikis importing things from lots of sources, so that tracking a userscript would really be a problem? Kashimashi: Girl Meets Girl Good Article Reassessment

As a major contributor to Kashimashi: Girl Meets Girl, I thought you'd want to know that that article is currently under going a Good Article Reassessment as part of the GA Sweeps. The article currently fails the good article criteria, as detailed at Talk:Kashimashi: Girl Meets Girl/GA1. Its reassessment is on hold for seven days to allow time for the issues to be addressed. The reason you (Collectonian) could delete this section is that a null edit does not show up in history, and so Ned would never even know that you did the null edit. Unless he looked at the history of this talk page. Your (Ned's) userpage was listed at WP:RM because someone combined a WP:RM request with an RFC request, and the RM got copied to the RFC, making WP:RFC show on WP:RM. In two places. I did a null edit to WP:RFC to make it go away from there, but your page had a mirror and was semi-protected. 199.125.109.102 (talk) 04:21, 6 July 2009 (UTC)

re: WP:NOTPLOT

Good morning. You recently made a cogent and articulate comment at WT:NOT on the topic of plot summaries. Would you consider joining the effort at Wikipedia:Plot-only description of fictional works?

The goal is to more fully explain all the nuance and detail about dealing with plot summaries without bloating WP:NOT any more than it already is. In that regard, this page is intended to parallel WP:WINAD, a drill-down page which very successfully elaborates on and clarifies WP:NOTDICDEF.

I've been talking with gigs, and moved the last section to the talk page at his request. Feel free to revert me, or to add support to position 8 (which should be sort of equivalent to the support position you put down before), or what have you.

In the mean time, we can see if we can try to reach a consensus on what actions to take on the talk page? It would be good to have some experienced wikipedians help out. I think it's important to assert some positive control on the wiki, to help people to remain franchised and productive.

Transwiki on en.wiki typically means to move content from one wiki to another, which is what WikiProject Transwiki does. Even without the WikiProject it would be very confusing to a lot of editors, as it is still a technical term used through out the WikiMedia projects (for example, WP:TRANSWIKI, Help:Transwiki, etc). You gave your project the same name as WP:WikiProject Transwiki, took over the redirect, and ignored the very discussion you started with me about the issue. Placing the name in all caps is not an acceptable method of disambiguation for a WikiProject, and breaks basic naming conventions. -- Ned Scott 08:10, 3 August 2009 (UTC)

I'm not opoosed to the move, I quite like the name actually, as long as you ensure all of the categories are renamed and the links in the pages started to date read as Intertranswiki I don't mind. Hello, it's me again. Recently, I went through all the articles that were using this template for the track lists and replaced them with the more standard and streamlined {{Tracklist}}. Had {{Tracklist}} existed at the time, I doubt I would have proposed the creation of {{Japanese track list}}, and as irony would have it, {{Tracklist}} was created less than a month after {{Japanese track list}} was. Since no articles now use {{Japanese track list}}, and it's basically obsolete in comparison to {{Tracklist}}, I wanted to inform you that I intend on putting the template on WP:TFD as long as I have your approval.--十八 04:16, 13 August 2009 (UTC)

Bot Question

I have no idea how to make bots, so I'm not sure if this is even possible, but if it is, I'm sure you would know how to go about doing something like this. Every article on Wikipedia except the subconscious page should not have the word "subconscious" in it. It's an incorrect and irritating term for the unconscious. I've noticed this word recently, and I can imagine there are many more uses of it on the site. Is there a way to program a bot that searches and automatically replaces "subconscious" with "unconscious" in every article but one? PÆonU (talk) 09:43, 10 March 2010 (UTC)

It would be very easy. The best way to go about it would be making a request at Wikipedia:Bot requests. Bots have changed too much since I've last used them, and I am currently unable to do the task myself without taking some time to relearn some things. Issue 1 - July, 2010

Hello and welcome to this, the first ever edition of the WikiProject Stagecraft Newsletter! If you haven't been over to the WikiProject page lately then you're missing out - the whole thing has undergone a complete makeover - see below for more info!
On top of this, we have brand spanking new templates (such as this one) and a completely revamped Collaboration of the Month - again, see below for more info on all of this.
Finally, a warning - the new-look WikiProject is still having the finishing touches put on it. If you find something that doesn't work, you don't agree with or is just plain missing, please don't hesitate to let us know on the WikiProject's talk page. We'll try our very best to fix ASAP!

New Look

As mentioned above, the WikiProject has recently undergone a spring-clean and we're excited about it! If you don't mind - we'd like to take this opportunity to explain some of the features and generally show off about it a little.

Colour scheme All pages on the WikiProject now use two consistent shades of blue as part of the new streamlined interface (Those techies amongst us may wish to know that the precise names of the colours we use are: "lightblue" for headings and "#c0e0e0" for backgrounds).
Navigation Menu Every page on the WikiProject now has the official WikiProject navigation menu so you can easily flick between pages and get back to the main project page. Say goodbye to clicking the back button several times!
To Do list/Open Tasks If you're stuck on what to do to help us then a list of the most important tasks is now available on the main page. At the moment, the list is looking a little short so if you have found something that you think ought to be added, then feel free to edit the list and let us know. Please refrain from linking to a specific article that generally needs an overall update. Single articles like this should be nominated for a future Collaboration of The Month - see below.

Templates

All of the project's templates are now arranged in one handy page. Whilst we were going through we also noticed one was missing. We have now added the new template in the form of:

{{WPStagecraftWelcome}} - a welcome tag to be placed on the talk page of a new user.

{{WPStagecraft Newsletter}} - the template containing the latest edition of the WikiProject Newsletter (you're looking at it now!)

Collaboration of the Month

Ok, so this isn't exactly a new feature. It's always been there but has never really been updated on a, ahem, monthly basis. The Collaboration of the Month (COTM) is now in template form to enable it to be streamlined across the Project, without having to be manually updated on each page. Don't worry if we've lost you at this point - the point is, it works! You can now nominate an article for COTM on the COTM page. The more sharp-eyed amongst you may well have noticed that the COTM at the moment is still that old fella, Stage lighting. That's because no-one has nominated a COTM for this month (being a new feature an' all...) so we've decided to leave it as it is for this month until a new one has been democratically voted for.

Deletions can only be overturned by deletion review. Reverting a redirection does not require a TfD. Use some common sense. I've got several previous discussions including other TfDs that kept those templates despite some users calling it "redundant". I doubt Test0 would have been redirected had anyone said anything during that last TfD, and was only redirected because no one was aware of this previous situation that old test templates are kept for users who prefer them. -- Ned Scott 09:23, 15 January 2011 (UTC)

WikiProject MfDs

Hopefully you'll be aware of this by now, but please please please stop nominating WikiProjects simply because they're inactive. It has long been established that we do not delete inactive WikiProjects unless they have virtually no real content or discussion. That is the whole reason we have the inactive tag for WikiProjects, and why WP:MfD says to tag them as inactive and not delete them. It might not seem like anything to you, but it's one of those things that the community at large has decided we should keep, just like talk page archives and past proposals. Many of these pages also contain relevant information to people who need to find sources on those topics or find out the reasons behind past decisions like mergers and such. -- Ned Scott 09:51, 1 April 2011 (UTC)

We've been through this before. It's been repeatedly explained that inactivity is not the sole criteria for nomination. Nor is nomination solely for the purpose of deletion. Please write to the Mfd and not to my userpage. I'd appreciate it you looked at each individual Mfd on a case by case basis, and did not cut and paste the same comment on all of them. While for a lot of them I only had the same thing to say, I did look at each one individually. I apologies if I did not catch some of your other reasons for deletion, and if you notice I did not just !vote to keep all WikiProject MfDs (there were a lot of them, so I just commented on the ones I thought should be kept, rather than also commenting on ones I thought should be deleted). Even some of the ones I still thought should be kept I was on the fence about and do not fault you for bringing to MfD. However, there were enough nominations that were clearly inappropriate for deletion that you either nominated yourself or had supported that I wanted to bring this to your attention. I wasn't sure if maybe you just didn't know that most of the time we slap an inactive tag on ones that were once active, but if this is simply a case were we disagree then I respect that and I mean no disrespect. -- Ned Scott 10:14, 1 April 2011 (UTC)

I've been nominating projects that died around 2005/2008. The Mfds I put up either had existing inactive tags or were long gone. I do use the semi-active/inactive/historical tags. --Klein zach 10:27, 1 April 2011 (UTC)

Just for FYI if the project has some history and is deleted its not a huge loss. The WikiProject Council archives all the WikiProject histories. Im not sure how often but they do. --Kumioko (talk) 11:42, 1 April 2011 (UTC)

I do not believe that is true. The only mention of archiving that WP:COUNCIL does that I could find talks about temporarily archiving that does not include edit histories (and perhaps other things) at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Council/Inactive projects#Clarification requested. The fact of the matter is that many of these deletions shouldn't he happening in the first place. -- Ned Scott 12:18, 1 April 2011 (UTC)

But what makes 2005-2008 so special that you must go after them for deletion when they do have history and are already tagged inactive? Some of these MfDs even had past MfDs were the conclusion was to keep them even though they were inactive. Nothing has changed since then, and even though 2005 might seem like a long time ago, it's still something that we normally keep on Wikipedia. -- Ned Scott 12:12, 1 April 2011 (UTC)

Hi, Ned. A few days ago, you voted at MfD to keep this page. I subsequently reviewed it (and its talk page) and agreed that there was information worth preserving. At first, I voted to keep the page and rename it, but through subsequent discussion, the nominator (Kleinzach) and I have come to an agreement that the information should be preserved through a merge into Wikipedia:Picture tutorial#Panoramas. Given these developments, I'd appreciate it if you'd take a second look at the MfD and let us know what you think of the idea of merging this material.
