ArbCom 2018 election voter message[edit]

Hello, Nford24. Voting in the 2018 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23.59 on Sunday, 3 December. All users who registered an account before Sunday, 28 October 2018, made at least 150 mainspace edits before Thursday, 1 November 2018 and are not currently blocked are eligible to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

HMAS Supply (A 195) moved to draftspace[edit]

I noticed that while you provided a valid copyright licensing tag, there is no proof that the creator of the file has agreed to release it under the given license.

GCStJ[edit]

Thanks for cleaning up my GCStJ list. I didn't put them in exact chronological order because I was trying to follow the order of precedence used within the Order it can be seen here and first lists the great officers (and former great officers) then the Bailiffs and Dames Grand Cross by Order of appointment. There are currently 36 (or, at least there were in January last when the current list was put on-line). Do you think we should stick with their order or try to find dates for chronology? --dave-- 06:51, 26 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I'm RonBot, a script that checks new non-free file uploads. I have found that the subject image that you recently uploaded was more than 5% in excess of the Non-free content guideline size of 100,000 pixels. I have tagged the image for a standard reduction, which (for jpg/gif/png/svg files) normally happens within a day. Please check the reduced image, and make sure that the image is not excessively corrupted. Other files will be added to Category:Wikipedia non-free file size reduction requests for manual processing. There is a full seven-day period before the original oversized image will be hidden; during that time you might want to consider editing the original image yourself (perhaps an initial crop to allow a smaller reduction or none at all). A formula for the calculation of the desired size can be found at WP:Image resolution, along with instructions on how to tag the image in the rare cases that it requires an oversized image (typically about 0.2% of non-free uploads are tagged as necessarily oversized). Awards not listed on Aus GG's website[edit]

Hello. Just wondering if you would know. For awards not mentioned on the Australian Governor general's website, (1953 coronation honours (Australia) as an example) would it be appropriate to look in the Australian Government gazette around the time or would the list be co-mingled in the London/UK Gazette? Reverts[edit]

Yeah, peerage does comes forward and has a higher precedence than knighthood, someone should discuss about including both peerage and knighthood. Per WP:HONORIFICS, knighted men/women are to be called Sir/Dame, peerage is present in over it and I believe inclusion of the honorific prefix should get included per that guideline. 2401:4900:1803:7BD1:1:1:615F:9119 People awarded either a knigthood or a damehood are fully entitled to use the Sir/Dame prefix, however, once the recipient is awarded a peerage the use of the Sir/Dame prefix stops in lieu of the 'Right Honourable' prefix. Re your recent reverts: I have been taught this way, but I have consulted the internet and it appears there is no such a thing as "correct use" here. Can you prove me wrong on this one?--R8R (talk) 20:59, 12 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

It's been a week and I've patiently waited for you to say anything.

I'll try to sum up what I have seen during the exchange of ours. So I have made an edit in accordance of my understanding of the English grammar; I was taught that fairly early in my study of the English language and I remembered the rule I was given well. Then my edit was not just undone, which would have been a normal thing in occurrence between editors, but rather had my edit rejected by a review of pending changes. I have been on Wikipedia long enough to know the basics of it: review of pending changes exists to remove edits that are obviously bad. Having my edit rejected in a review, naturally, irritated me, as my edit was clearly made in good faith. I quickly looked up the issue on the internet to see if I was wrong and it turned out there were different standards of writing this. I have asked you politely about your rationale, pointing out what I have learned about multiple standards of doing this. In your response, you completely ignored my mention of the bit on multiple standards and stuck to yours.

This, naturally, irritated me even more, and I went ahead to check the MOS, and I found a ruling there, which precisely supports my edit. I did not expect you to actually oppose enforcement of MOS in any way; I understood you had made a mistake but I assumed you'd leave it at that. I told you I was going to do what MOS says but since it would be impolite not to allow you to have a say on this, I didn't do it right off the bat and left you some time to leave a comment (which I presumed you wouldn't take to stop me). In response to that, you said it should be pointed out that my edit was reverted in a review and that my manner was aggressive and you wouldn't allow me to make the change (per what MOS suggests!) and you'd even revert me if I tried (!), saying it was not up for me. Naturally, this irritated me even more still. What I thought was that you couldn't accept it that you had made a mistake so much that you'd even use this small leverage over me you have just not to admit it yourself. And you said you thought that was reasonable!

However, I know from experience that pointing that out wouldn't help much; I just wanted the change made, and I didn't want to ask a third party to satisfy what I, to be frank, considered your neediness, and so I acted in the best spirit of WP:GF (I didn't find a way to think positively of your response, so I acted as if I had not made a judgment at all) and invited you for a dialogue. If that's my "aggressive manner" that's wrong, I thought, a calm discussion would surely allow to get it past this judgment, since I had the rules on my side, and so I asked you politely to engage in a discussion. A week has passed, and you've kept quiet, even though I've seen in your contributions you were active on a few days. What this looks like is that you simply can't accept you were wrong.

I really wonder you said that you, quote, "should point out that it was reverted in the review." I thought that you were just showing off that you can do something I cannot and thus acting as if your opinion mattered more, since somebody had bestowed the reviewing rights on you. I did not act upon that thought either. But what I did do is, I took the hint that you were a reviewer and read Wikipedia:Reviewing pending changes, which, as I have discovered, says that for a reviewer, "in general, there are three options: [...] If you intend to ultimately revert the changes, then you may do so from the reviewing interface with an appropriate explanation, but as for all reverts they must be supported by policy (emphasis added)." I also noticed that while you rejected my edit, you did not accept the previous edit which did not touch the issue why you did not accept the edit in question. It looks like it was overlooked. What should one think of your reviewing on this occasion? I wouldn't be asking this question if you yourself had not specifically pointed out this was in a review.

I will now reinstate the two edits. I will consider it most unreasonable on your part if you reject them again.

And this wall of text would not be worth writing if it was not for the question that I'm leading to. Do you think you're generally a good reviewer? I will immediately point out that I don't know the answer to this question, and I'm not trying to imply I do. My impression so far, as you can judge, has been starkly negative, but it could well be that you had a bad day, and so it could very well be that it's just a one-off thing. And it could be that it isn't. Why it matters is that I've seen some fine people leave Wikipedia, who said they were to tired of this because the place was broken, and that the Wiki bureaucracy was making editing and participation unbearable, that people in it could do whatever they wished and that there was no way they'd listen. I have seen an editor who has greatly inspired me to write better articles leave for that very reason. Do you think that actions like yours in this case help reinstate this idea in their heads? Do you think anything is to be done about that? Do you think it would be a good idea to admit you were wrong, and it would have been an even better idea to reinstate MOS back a week ago yourself? You do have special privileges, responsibility comes with that.

I am capable of self-reflection. I do realize that I should not have been that pushy about reinstating the apostrophe rule all that quickly. I was really irritated, and that's why I wanted to get things right there and then, but being irritated is not an excuse for anything. I admit that. Do you have anything to admit?

P.S. I will watch your talk page for a few more days to see if I get any response from you; if you reply later than, say, Wednesday, please ping me just in case. However, if you do write a reply, I'd like you very much to respond to those questions I raised in the paragraph starting with "and this wall of text."

R8R I believe I can see the misinterpretation to what I said because I can see that I didn't type it clearly.
When I said "so I'll just not approve the next review and leave it for another editor to do" I meant that you can revert my revert and I'll neither approve or disapprove the edit and leave it for another editor to approve or disapprove at their discretion. I figured that's a reasonable course of action for all because I've seen it happen before. I don't agree with the placement of the apostrophe, but that's fine because I don't have a PHD in literacy, so I am always open to discussion, which leads back to why leaving it for another reviewer to decide on was, I believed, was the easiest for us both. Correct me if I am wrong of course.
I always assume good faith, and likewise, expect the same when reviewing (which is why I mentioned it) because the review interface isn't as clearcut and there are only two options not three, articles that require review are also generally tagged for 'Persistent vandalism'. My lack of response was simply due to how busy I have been, I don't use Wiki too often and at present being an Australian politician and a wiki editor usually clashes timewise often. There are things that I dislike about Wiki rules, too. I don't like that logical punctuation does not have an alternative in the MOS, and I particularly dislike WP:ALUM. However, these are the house rules here, and I follow them as much as I disagree with them. You've surely heard the proverb, "when in Rome, do as the Romans do."

Ribbons and medals – Photographs or created images?[edit]

To enhance Queensland Honours and explain the awards and honours at Katarina Carroll, do you create SVGs etc. from a photograph? Was going to add several (as photographs) but may look better as specifically created images.

And what should be a standard heading: Honours, Honours and awards, Awards and honours? There is some variation looking at various pages.

Hey Q8682, So for something like that check out Bob Atkinson (police officer), that's an article I created. On that page, the top representation is referred to by some wiki editors as "ribbon farms", and the bottom is a far more detailed and standard layout. You can find all those images at Australian honours system. When I create ribbon bars I use Microsoft Paint, only because it's a very simple way to make the ribbons. If you're looking at making the ribbon bars, I'd recommend using this as a base for size , and also using two tones which gives for a more pleasing image at the end.

Honours list[edit]

There is no Wikipedia policy prohibiting any sort of discussion on an honours list page. In this case, the media articles spoke to the recipient who confirmed he was offered the award on this list and declined it. I don't see why the fact the award was declined (for this specific list) couldn't be included. It is the most appropriate page. Please don't change it again. Cooee Nford, I understand that you reverted my change because no explanation was given. So I'll try to hammer out my thoughts on why I did this change. Firstly, I did it for my initial reason, which was standardisation, as both the Royal Navy and USN pages don't include their previous ensigns in the box (though the RN does have an addendum for their previous naval ensigns, which can be added if you want). Secondly, the Australian White Ensign (which is the redirect for the Naval Ensign) notes that the British ensign was previously used between the period of federation and 1967; this is easy to reach and doesn't really warrant duplication. These two are my main reasons for the removal of the british ensign (plus other smaller reasons that I won't bore you with), which I could've definitely communicated better about. Coat of Arms[edit]

Hey, I noticed you reverted my edit. I'm totally fine with (I'm not that well versed with the history of Australia, so I'll always defer to other judgement), so I don't mean to ask this as a kind of retort... Leventio Between 1901-1952 the Tudor crown was used on all Australian badges and coats of arms including the Australian shield, between 1952-2023 we used the St Edwards crown. Next year as part of the coronation we'll be reverting back to using the Tudor Crown (According to the Governor-Generals office anyway).
