Welcome![edit]

Hello, Nick10powpow, and welcome to Wikipedia! My name is Shalor and I work with the Wiki Education Foundation; I help support students who are editing as part of a class assignment.

I hope you enjoy editing here. If you haven't already done so, please check out the student training library, which introduces you to editing and Wikipedia's core principles. You may also want to check out the Teahouse, a community of Wikipedia editors dedicated to helping new users. Below are some resources to help you get started editing.

Air sports[edit]

Hi. I reverted your additions to the air sports article because they do not meet the standard of what a Wikipedia article it supposed to be. Please revisit the training modules on the Dashboard. I strongly recommend that you consult the Editing Wikipedia brochure that I've linked to here as well. Thanks. Ian (Wiki Ed) (talk) 17:38, 31 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Edits to air sports[edit]

Hi, I saw that you reverted Ian (Wiki Ed)'s removal of your content. Please do not do this, as this is seen as edit warring. The content had issues that need to be addressed before anything is re-added. Here are my notes:

  • The additions messed with the formatting of the article - there are specific ways that articles are supposed to be formatted as far as headers and style goes.
  • The writing is fairly casual in tone and doesn't follow the encyclopedic style that Wikipedia uses. For example, you want to avoid using slang and casual turns of phrase, partially because it can make something seem less encyclopedic but also because not all readers will automatically understand what it means. A really well known example of this on Wikipedia would be slang and euphemisms for the word deceased, such as passed away and final rest. These may not immediately make sense to all people reading the English Wikipedia and are also sometimes imprecise. You want to avoid any sort of editorial style language.
You also want to avoid making objective statements, such as saying that something is more or of equal popularity as something else. We cannot make judgement statements like this on Wikipedia unless it's an extremely widely held opinion. Even then it has to be phrased very, very carefully in a way that shows that it's an opinion held by the majority of people as opposed to Wikipedia itself. This is typically done by attributing the claims to the person(s) making them. These claims should also always be backed up with a reliable source that explicitly makes the claim.
  • This didn't have much sourcing, as you added a lot of unsourced content. Keep in mind that any unsourced content can be challenged and removed, which is what happened here.
  • Be very careful with grammar and spelling, as well as what person you're writing in. Wikipedia should only be written in third person as first and second person come across like it's written from the viewpoint of a specific person and is aimed at a specific person. It also presumes something of the reader, which should be avoided. You can read over this in some more depth at this page.
  • The other person who reverted you, Jeff in CA, also noted that there was some wrong information. They listed an example in their edit summary, (first American Beachey vs. first pilot Nestorov), so it's very very VERY important to make sure that any information you add is accurate. Make sure that you are using sourcing that is the strongest possible sourcing and reliable. Be wary of content pulled up via a Google search, as not all sourcing is seen as reliable. The sourcing that you did use looks to be OK, but you need more of it and to be honest, I would prefer that you first look through your library's academic and scholarly offerings first before turning to the Internet.

Again, please do not revert this to re-add this content. Re-adding it will not resolve the issues and will actually be seen as disruptive and could even result in a block from editing, even if only temporary. Please reach out to me on my talk page or at my email at shalor@wikiedu.org if you're interested in further adding content. I can help you with the writing style and research to a certain degree.
