re "I thought that the "connected contributor" tag" - It's a little hard for someone to make the connection between the COI tag at the top of the article and the COIN listing. Generally, if you're going to put aggressive tags on articles, it's good etiquette to leave talkpage explanations per Wikipedia:Tagging_pages_for_problems.

Having glanced over the COIN discussion, some of the concerns your expressing appear legitimate. Could we not simply go through Golden Rice and eliminate any of the IRRI references Sophie put in? NickCT (talk) 12:21, 13 August 2013 (UTC)

If I'm not mistaken, she's actually done that already (uncharacteristically for PR folks, in my experience, but fine by me). re "she's actually done that already" - I'm not sure she has (though I haven't looked at this too deeply, so I may be mistaken). Sophie has been editing this page for a while. Thanks for the note. The conversation regarding the lead wording took place a couple years ago. There were several relevant discussions, but Talk:Fox_News_Channel/Archive_24#Some_critics_and_observers.3F might be the most relevant. I appreciate there are POV concerns here, but the last time consensus was tested on this issue, consensus seemed to be that "some observers" was not sufficiently reflective of the soruces. Might be time to revisit the issue, given the more recent complaints raised in December 2012 and 2013, as well as Arzel's points about "many" being an unattributed weasel word in the discussion you linked (and in another from May 1, 2007). I'm not opposed to a revisit to see if consensus has changed. I'd prefer not to spearhead that, as this conversation if obviously one fraught with WP:POV issues and consternation.

My position remains largely the same as 4 years ago. If you consult RSs on Fox New's political orientation, the gross gross (two gross's for emphasis) majority support the idea that it is conservatively orientated. Using "some observers" would seem as though it doesn't duly reflect that.

Frankly, I think the language should be even stronger than it currently is.

If you do want to spearhead a "revisit" here, I'd suggest it take the form of an RfC. Let me know if you want to work together on it. Be warned though, you should be prepared for shouting and WP:Wikidrama. Best, NickCT (talk) 13:59, 30 December 2013 (UTC)

An exciting month of wiki events!

Hello there,

I am pleased to say that April will be a very exciting month for Wikipedia in Washington, DC. We have a lot of different events coming up, so you will have a lot to choose from.

First, a reminder that our second annual Women in the Arts Edit-a-Thon will take place on Sunday, March 30 at the National Museum of Women in the Arts.

Coming up in April, we have our first-ever Open Government WikiHack with the Sunlight Foundation on April 5–6! We are working together to use open government data to improve the Wikimedia projects, and we would love your help. All are welcome, regardless of coding or editing experience. We will also be having a happy hour the day before, with refreshments courtesy of the Sunlight Foundation.

On Friday, April 11 we are having our first edit-a-thon ever with the Library of Congress. The Africa Collection Edit-a-Thon will focus on the Library's African and Middle East Reading Room. It'll be early in the morning, but it's especially worth it if you're interested in improving Wikipedia's coverage of African topics.

The following day, we are having our second annual Wiki Loves Capitol Hill training. We will discuss policy issues relevant to Wikimedia and plan for our day of outreach to Congressional staffers that will take place during the following week.

There are other meetups in the works, so be sure to check our meetup page with the latest. I hope to see you at some of these events!

Palbociclib

NickCT, I don't get it. Why is version (2) an improvement over version (1)?

(1) In a phase 2 trial reported at the April 2014 annual meeting of the American Association for Cancer Research, palbociclib slowed progression of advanced cancer, but had no statistically significant effect on extending life.

(2) In a phase 2 trial reported at the April 2014 annual meeting of the American Association for Cancer Research, palbociclib was shown to significantly slow the progression of advanced cancer, but had no statistically significant effect on increasing the chance of survival.

Thanks for dropping by!

So couple points.

1) re "slowed" -> "was shown to significantly slow the" - I don't really think this is an important change. The article I read state that the "progression free" time for patients on palbociclib doubled. I thought the doubling in time needed a little more emphasis. If you don't think it reads better, you're free to remove it.

2) re "extending life" -> "increasing the chance of survival" - Saying palbociclib did not "extend life" seems objectively wrong as overall survival for patients given the treatment was extended from 33.3 months in the control to 37.5 months. 4.2 months is an extensions, no? @Nbauman - Ah! You have a more authoritative source than the Reuters piece I read, which just stated the 33.3 and 37.5 month numbers. Funny, I'm not a statistician but I would have guessed a 33.3 versus 37.5 month difference in a group of 30 patients would have represented a significant difference. Funny to that the drug could be shown to significantly halt "progression" but not mean survival time.

Regardless, I concede your point. I'll try to give it a quick reword.

Well, the Reuters article did start out with

(Reuters) - Pfizer Inc's experimental breast cancer drug in a clinical trial nearly doubled the amount of time patients lived without their disease getting worse, but overall survival was not yet shown to be statistically significant, researchers said.

Always pay careful attention to the difference between progression-free survival and overall survival. Overall survival means you live longer. Progression-free survival means you die with nice x-rays and lab work. --Nbauman (talk) 19:26, 8 April 2014 (UTC)

Oscar López Rivera

We have a similar problem with a similar article at Filiberto Ojeda Ríos where Mercy11 serves as its gatekeeper. He's so passionate about condemning the FBI that the article is left poorly sourced with a severe NPOV problem (it is tagged). At this point the article is in limbo until we can find a dispute resolution forum that he will accept. If you have any success with the Rivera article, please share your approach.

Violent Crime is defined in the federal code[2] as: Crime of violence defined a) an offense that has as an element the use, attempted use, or threatened use of physical force against the person or property of another, or (b) any other offense that is a felony and that, by its nature, involves a substantial risk that physical force against the person or property of another may be used in the course of committing the offense. Two edit-a-thons coming up!

Hello there!

I'm pleased to tell you about two upcoming edit-a-thons:

• This Tuesday, April 29, from 2:30 to 5:30 PM, we have the Freer and Sackler edit-a-thon. (Sorry for the short notice!)

Adrianne Wadewitz edit-a-thons in Southern New England

As you may have already heard, the Wikipedia community lost an invaluable member of the community last month. Adrianne Wadewitz was a feminist scholar of 18th-Century British literature, and a prolific editor of the site. As part of a worldwide series of tributes, New England Wikimedians, in conjunction with local institutions of higher learning, have created three edit-a-thons that will be occurring in May and June. The events are as follows: May 21st at Northeastern University's Snell Library, in the Digital Scholarship Commons on the second floor May 22nd at Brown University's Rockefeller Library, in the Digital Scholarship Lab June 25th at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (exact location TBA), where we will also be hosting a "how to conduct an edit-a-thon" session beforehand We hope that you will be able to join us, whether you are an experienced editor or are using Wikipedia for the first time.
