Neologism Guideline[edit]

Hi there Nickelshoe, I'm trying to make the neologism guideline better. I've incorporated your dicdef concerns into a new version. Would you mind having a look over my new version? Check out Wikipedia_talk:Avoid_neologisms for the link to the revision. Thanks. -- cmh 00:42, 12 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Apparently you have never studied Copyright Law - Copying a website only infringes copyright if the information is copyright protected. In this case, no one has asserted copyright. As well, the information put forward is asserted by the company as fact...that alone puts it into the realm of public material. Facts cannot be copyrighted...this is basic in copyright law. Finally, information taken for research or study purposes, in Canada and the US, can be copied fairly liberally before copyright is infringed. Before discussing a subject you do not understand, please take time to do the background research.

Thanks for your notice, I already made improvements. I forgot to expand the article. --MaNeMeBasat 14:42, 12 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hello NickelShoe,

Just wanted to thank you for the kind welcome and helpful tips. I've been reading Wikipedia for years so now it just comes down to learning the "coding."

I recently got a few messages from Wikipedia. They say that one of my articles is being considered for deletion. Another message says my work needs work because it needs context. Hi, it's me! You probably don't remember my IP, but I was the guy who kept making bad contributions to the villain article. Bad, BAD contributions!! Well, I'm going to follow your advice and get a username! I just don't have the time, so I'll do it in a couple of weeks. Thank God people won't be able to see my IP address and link my acocunt to my talk page, I'd be so embarassed! So thanks a lot for the advice, I actually read the rules now, and it makes more sense now, I should be able to avoid any more mistakes. Man, the fright those warning templates gave me! It's like the crazies at the library, who tell you that you MUST bring your book back, makes me feel like they'll eat me alive if I don't. A task fit for your profile[edit]

I came across this set of articles on a faith based NGO called the Peoples Action for Rural Awakening working on disaster relief in India in the aftermath of the boxing day tsunami. The author is fairly possessive of his entries and does not agree with me on there being problems with orginial research as well as copyvio for some images. When I saw your user page I knew that I had found the right person for this task :) I do not know how to tell the author that several of the articles probably needs deletion. Myself, I am off for a wikiholiday now ;)

My Reply[edit]

Hi NickelShoe. I think your comments are true. I've not been able to see the guidelines for making an article - time constraints - that's it. Yeah, I've got to take some time off to read the guidelines and all about wikipededia - the administration, the guidelines, the manuals, etc. As for disaster efforts, the articles that I've written are unique - that they take care of the invisible victims of Tsunami. Today's edit in Punarnirmaan has the required text to keep off doubting Thomases. But I do accept the fact that I get down to the basics and start tutoring myself about wikipedia. Thank you also for politely getting to me. I appreciate a lot about it. I'm also putting a copy of this to Drdan's page.--Pradeep 20:23, 15 April 2006 (UTC)

First, a million thanks to NickelShoe for the diplomacy! It is appreciated! I felt my blood boiling for nothing and decided to establish contact through a meddler :) and I feel that it was the right choice!
Dear Pradeep, I requested NickelShoe to contact you since I know that s/he is much more diplomatic than I. My Wikiholiday is much needed and I was (still am) afraid to come across as sharp to you. In addition, I think that NickelShoe is much more experienced in providing help to authors like yourself. Nevertheless, I will point to some of the specific problems and provide tips on your talkpage.
--Drdan 20:51, 15 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Dear NickelShoe and Drdan, I've tried to reference Navnirmaan, Punarnirmaan, Peoples Action for Rural Awakening and Council of Christian Hosptals for the moment. I now 'got' the point. So wikipedia is all about being professional - like how theses are written. Yeah, I now recollect my Dad's constant disciplining of his students in order to 'reference' their theses and urging them to spend more time at the library of ACTC. I think I understand it now and also feel ashamed to have troubled you. I'll do more wikifying over a period in this regard. I think I'll also stop writing more articles and instead devote time to wikifying the already written ones. Goodbye.--Pradeep 05:39, 18 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Bubakar Awards[edit]

Hi, NickelShoe. I'm looking for a second opinion. Several articles like Bubakar Award for Best Documentary, (and others relating to the "Bubakar Awards") were added to Wikipedia today. I can't find a whole lot about these awards. A Google search turned up what appears to be a lot of hits. But...the main page is someone's Earthlink homepages. Many of the others are mentions in some Nicole Kidman fan sites. Lots of the others are long lists of links, with the Bubakar listing containing exactly the same phrase: Grassroots film awards program in opposition to the Academy Awards. There are very few outside mentions of the awards themselves. Frankly, it looks like a film-buff and his friends got tired of the Academy Awards and decided to choose their own picks. Then, an editor here ran across a mention of them somewhere.

Am I missing something that would make these awards notable enough for inclusion here on Wikipedia? Joyous | Talk 23:22, 23 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I have made considerable changes to the article and have removed the prod notice. Is there anything else I have to do, or just wait to see until another editor looks at it? How do I know if it is finaly good enough?

Thank you for your time.

I wrote the Chauncey Matthews article that you have proposed for deletion because I thought it was wrong that the young black man was the only member of the American Juniors group without his very own wikipedia page. You have to remove the pages for all the other members of the group, because, by your own logic, none of them have any notable accomplishments, either. All of their wikipedia entries read like promotional materials. One girl has had a minor role in one T.V. show episode but that's about it. Again, please delete all of the American Juniors members if you are going to delete the Chauncey Matthews entry.Asedzie 05:13, 28 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Lubna Agha[edit]

Hi NickelShoe, I noticed you removed the essay section from Lubna Agha. I agree with you that this should be a reference to the article rather than the text of the article itself. However, I'm turning to you regarding another "removal issue" I'm hoping you can atleast guide me in the right direction for. It seems OrphanBot removed some images from the article as well, citing: "Removing image with no source information. Such images that are older than seven days may be deleted at any time." However, when following the links to OrphanBot, I can't find how one should provide source information. Could you be so kind as to direct me to how I could do this?! Thx in advance!

Is there still NPOV and OR problems with this article? Please advise.Hrodulf 02:38, 31 May 2006 (UTC) From my talk page:[reply]

Personally, I think it still needs improvement in both neutrality and verifiability. Ideally, every claim should be supported by an outside source. It still sounds like it is coming from a person with an opinion, even if the person is being pretty fair. NickelShoe (Talk) 05:33, 31 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The problem is, this is one person who is sticking up posters. There is no outside source. The only online references I could find are website blogs talking about this. Do they qualify as verification? Also, I'm not clear on the POV issue, since I removed the text about the person being deranged/disheveled. I'll read it again. --Hrodulf 18:41, 2 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I was wrong about some of the stuff being taken out. I thought I'd done it already. The confusing grammar and shabbily dressed stuff is out (although I'm not sure they really counted as POV, I couldn't identify anything else you could have been referring to, so they're out. But the thing is, the grammar in the flyers is often messed up. I'm not sure how it's POV to note that, since it's factually correct, and therefore a neutral observation. In other words, it seems that saying the person is stupid or ignorant would be POV, stating that the flyers contain grammar errors is NPOV, since it's factually verifiable by looking at the flyers themselves. Please note if the bloggers count as verifiability, because if they don't, there's nothing else I can use. People aren't writing books or magazine articles about whoever is doing this; this is an obvious outsider to the political process who is receiving no media attention.--Hrodulf 18:47, 2 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Verifiability is really important--like if there's no outside sources, there shouldn't be an article. How the people are dressed and stuff would be fine, if it was properly sourced and included in a neutral way--as something people say, not as the article's way of cutting their credibility. You know?
Blogs are better than nothing, I think. NickelShoe (Talk) 19:50, 2 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
But the fact that something is true doesn't make it neutral. Like if I included the fact that so-and-so's parents were unmarried in an article, when it was totally true, if there wasn't any relevance, it wouldn't be neutral. But if it was something outside sources talked about, then it'd be relevant, presented neutrally and sourced. NickelShoe (Talk) 19:53, 2 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Added the blogs. How is the fact that the grammar is messed up and the flyers are confusing a lot of the time not relevant? It is an aspect of the flyers. Look at the one in the article. It says "Protest" and then "Non Violence" on the next line. We should protest non violence?--Hrodulf 21:59, 2 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I never said it was irrelevant, but it's important how it's presented. You can't rely on the fact that something is true to say it's NPOV is all I mean. The main issue here is actually original research. Cite the blogger who makes fun of the grammar--the grammar itself isn't important so much as the fact that people think it makes it look stupid.
Anyway, everything is a work in progress. It's not like you have to turn out a perfect article by the end of the week. Basically I was only saying it's not perfect, that doesn't mean it's easy to make it perfect. NickelShoe (Talk) 22:11, 2 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Nedir.net deletion[edit]

Well, I'm a member of that site and I think that if Ekşi Sözlük deserves an article, Nedir.net does as well. Both are regional sites, not very accessed by non-Turcophones, maybe Ekşi Sözlük was a pioneer in its genre and more popular but this does not mean that its other peers should be totally ignored. I think Nedir.net also deserves its article.

Barefoot Deep Tissue

I see that you removed the article Barefoot Deep Tissue? I looked briefly at the Notability page, and disagree with your opinion. Although it was developed less than 20 years ago, several books and many articles have been written on this distinctive maodality of therapeutic massage. It is also taught worldwide in many massage schools, because it is therapeutic, and not just moisturizing or relaxing. My mentor charges $120/ hour and works on celebrities and professional athletes. I am cheaper, but have plenty of testimonials from clients.

Based on your opinion, one may assume that the lengthy article for Tachyons should be erased as well, because not many people understand and probably no one uses them.

Removal of GotNext entry[edit]

I'm somewhat shocked that a proposal was made to remove my "GotNext" entry because in your opinion -- the site isn't "notable enough" for an entry. In all due respect, what tools do you utilize to measure which websites are notable and which are not? Is there official guidelines that you can direct me to?

If not, then I take this as an arbitary decision made on your part which was totally unfair against an author that contributed material that was neither offensive, controversial... nor was it created to use Wikipedia as an advertising vehicle. GotNext has been recognized on several websites, acknowledged in multiple press releases since its debut in August 2005, we're also recognized nationwide as an affiliate of Hardcore Gamer Magazine and get plenty of hits per month. Saying that our site isn't "notable enough" really is a slap in the face.

I don't wish to create any arguments or trouble -- but I don't feel that you were justified to remove a site. I'd just appreciate why something of constructive value was removed. Thanks in advance for your time and look forward to a response. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 69.177.10.100 (talkcontribs) .

Also, how do you upload images to here, and also place them in tables, as well as inserting them into articles, for example in the FA Premier League 2006-07 article, I'm aiming to add a table to the main page, and then place the club's badges next to that club's name, like in the 2006 FIFA World Cup article where the nation's flag is next to that country's name, but with clubs.

==Article for deletion?==[edit]

Hi there Nickelshoe and thanx for the nice welcome you gave me. I have a question the answer to which i haven't been able to find on the help pages so I thought I would ask you. An article of mine has been nominated for deletion. I've looked at the policy and stuff for how the discussion should go and so on. What I haven't been able to find out is what happens at the end of 5 days. Ie can any admin delete the article based on their judgement of whether there is consensus, or what? Who actually makes the decision? You see I think that there is no clear consensus to delete, and that I have addressed the issues people have raised about the article. But it was nominated by an admin that I am worried will go ahead and delete it based on his own judgement. This seems a little unfair, it would be better if it was someone who'd never seen it before.. The article is Bantown but i'm not complaining about anything in this specific case. It's just the making of the final decision didn;t seem to be covered on the help page. Thanks in advance, Via strass 20:26, 18 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

You're welcome. Yeah, basically any admin can close the discussion based on their judgment of whether or not there is a consensus. But if it gets deleted and you think the admin misjudged the consensus, you can bring it up at a deletion review. NickelShoe (Talk) 23:47, 18 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
