Wikimedia Photo: Racial Profiling Protest[edit]

The photo shown is a example of protesting against racial profiling. Many members of the community feel an injustice with police departments targeting minorities, so a common way to fight against these injustices is to protest with hopes that it will bring about positive change. instructor feedback[edit]

N, Your work this far in your sandbox shows that you have been following along with our training, and you are taking the course themes and integrating them into your topic. Excellent work. I like that you mention the peer element below, and also have academic sources to draw information from. The paragraph that you include as part of your critique of the article is good, just be sure to write in encyclopedic prose (we will cover this again in class next week). It is a simply an effort to edit the tone of your paragraph. In terms of what you are planning on doing, it is exactly what I want to see. You could improve by coding your references in proper APA or MLA style and creating a references header. You can check on how to do this in the edit booklet or pdf online and also use other good Wikipedia pages as a guide on the visuals. You might also decide to add a photo from Wikimedia commons to your sandbox and edit your paragraph for repetitive writing. Overall, I was happy to see the work that you have put into this already. RaceandCrime[edit]

I am going to be editing a article that a peer has been looking at, which is a page on race with its relation to crime as it closely relates to the article I am looking at on racial profiling. I will be looking for ways to improve on this article by creating a critique on it as well as add a paragraph with some referenced information to help improve the article. The article can be found here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Race_and_crime

The critique on this article is that it makes a rather general statement, and has little references or statistics to back up its arguments or prove its points. It also seems rather short and fails to go into detail on the concept rather than providing a short definition. The topic of race and crime is an important one and should be talked about, however it must be done in a way that is unbiased and provide examples to point out its relevance.

To start off, race and crime is a concept that should not be looked at in a bias way, only through a fact driven viewpoint and what must be kept in mind is that although there may be some variations within the different races and the statistical results they receive, the results cannot be applied to people individually as this is bias and statistics can change depending on various factors such as the times and places that this information was gathered. According to (Rushton, 1995), it can be highly problematic to create generalizations about a individual based on the racial group they belong to, even if their group is statistically more active in the given stereotype, generalizing can be bias and cause a variety of negative consequences; however it is important to note that some significant racial variations do exist within crime. When comparing crime rates regarding race with other races, it is important to consider many aspects such as the history of their country or background they come from or the condition the country is in compared to other countries, and the whole article should be looked at through an unbiased and fact driven point of view. According to (Rushton, 1995) and facts gathered by him, African and Caribbean countries have double the amount violent crimes than European countries and triple the amount than countries located in the pacific rim, therefore it can be concluded that some places are higher in crime rates than others. Although the information makes a generalization about a country and the race's that live there, it is important to remember that crime rate with its relation to race does not apply to everyone, and by converting the statistics or information into generalization can create many different negative consequences on the individual level. RacialProfiling[edit]

— Preceding unsigned comment added by Nickv25 (talkcontribs) 16:48, 12 March 2015 (UTC) I am working to improve the definition for an article on racial profiling. The article that needs improvement can be found here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Racial_profiling[reply]

Racial profiling can be seen as a form of background injustice that is considered by most as morally wrong, but according to (Bou-Habib, 2010), racial profiling is a tool used for criminal investigations to select members of ethnic groups based entirely on their affiliation with that ethnic group with the belief that more criminals will be caught if more members of these ethnic groups in question are stopped and searched. However (Bou-Habib, 2010) argues this concept is morally wrong for a number of reasons as racial profiling promotes a racist attitude that assumes incorrect or exaggerated ideas and beliefs on entire ethnic groups that are subjected to racial profiling for illogical reasons to begin with. Wikipedia Reflection[edit]

Critical Race theory can be explained in various ways, but can best be explained through the context of Wikipedia. Since Wikipedia is essentially one of the largest sites for knowledge production, the definition of critical race theory on this site can be seen as a universal definition that involves multiple edits and various points of view on the theory, which when compared with all the other possible experiences or inputs can create the most accurate understanding of the concept of critical race theory. Throughout the Wikipedia assignment and the use of Wikipedia I have personally learned a variety of useful things. One thing that I learned about myself is that I have more interest in correcting and ensuring certain descriptions of concepts do not contain any bias points of view more than I originally thought I would. I feel that if I am going to participate in the editing of such a large site like Wikipedia, then it is most important that the knowledge available to everyone is not written in a bias way as this can cause many problems. One thing I personally learned about Wikipedia itself is that although it does contain a large variety of information available to anyone, some parts of it also are in need of improvement or editing. The use of Wikipedia and critical race theory helped me look at the entire concept of race in a new point of view which helps give me a better overall understanding of the topic. One thing that I would do to support students doing this assignment in the future is to try and use as many sources you can to support what you are saying in your Wikipedia statements, as the more information you have, the more accurate and rich your submissions will be. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Nickv25 (talkcontribs) 00:08, 1 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]
