Managing a conflict of interest[edit]

Information icon Hello, Nina.santarpia. We welcome your contributions, but if you have an external relationship with the people, places or things you have written about on the page AES Hawaii Power Plant, you may have a conflict of interest (COI). Editors with a conflict of interest may be unduly influenced by their connection to the topic. See the conflict of interest guideline and FAQ for organizations for more information. We ask that you:

Hi Nina.santarpia, and welcome to Wikipedia. I wanted to leave a couple of notes. First, your requested move will have a much better chance of success if you can provide secondary sources (news articles, reports, or something) that demonstrate that Barbers Point Power Plant is the most commonly used name of the plant. Wikipedia articles use the title that is most commonly used in independent, reliable sources (the specific policy is WP:Common name), so if you have some good, independent sources that demonstrate the proper name, you should poste them with your requested move notice.
Second, you can start to draft an article for AES Hawaii (the company) while the requested move discussion is ongoing. Since you appear to have a direct connection with AES, I strongly, strongly recommend that you use the article creation wizard at Wikipedia:Articles for creation, which will help you create the draft article. Once you're done, you can submit it for publication. A reviewer will look at your article and will help publish it if the article is compliant with Wikipedia's policies and content guidelines.
Finally, if you are employed by AES, you must disclose this connection on your user page or user talk page, as well as any pages that are connected to your employer that you edit. See WP:UPE and Wikipedia:Paid-contribution disclosure. Aoi (青い) (talk) 07:16, 23 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Aoi! Thank you so much for the information and for welcoming me to Wikipedia! I went ahead and added an article to my request to move and I will begin to draft an article for the company as you suggested - thank you so much for letting me know I'm able to do this as the discussion is still going on. I will also be sure to disclose that I am an employee. I appreciate your help! Nina.santarpia (talk) 08:07, 23 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Aoi! I have drafted a page for AES Hawaii I linked the AES Barbers Point Power Plant but I can change that if we decide to go with a different name. Please let me know if there is anything else I can do to help with the process - thank you! Nina.santarpia (talk) 08:27, 26 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Aoi ^ Nina.santarpia (talk) 08:28, 26 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Nina.santarpia, I took a quick look at the page (Draft:AES Hawaii); I'll take a closer look later. Unfortunately, based on the quick skim I did of the page, it seems unlikely to be accepted as a Wikipedia article as it is presently written.
In order for a reviewer to accept a page, among other things, the article needs to show that the subject of the article meets Wikipedia's notability guidelines. For companies, the guideline is WP:NCORP. You can click the link to read more, but let me quote the simplified version here: An organization is generally considered notable if it has been the subject of significant coverage in reliable, independent secondary sources. Trivial or incidental coverage of a subject by secondary sources is not sufficient to establish notability. All content must be verifiable. If no independent, third-party, reliable sources can be found on a topic, then Wikipedia should not have an article on it.
Right now, the citations in the article are all to AES Hawaii's website. That is fine to verify certain objective facts (for example, to verify the capacity of a battery storage project), but a company website cannot be used to demonstrate the notability of the company because it is not an independent source. In order for the article to be accepted, the article must cite at least a few independent, reliable sources that cover AES Hawaii in some depth. For example, can you provide links to maybe a profile of the company that appeared in a reliable industry trade magazine (that wasn't sponsored by AES)? Or, maybe the Honolulu Star Advertiser or another reliable, regional news source did an in-depth piece about AES's renewable energy projects? Aoi (青い) (talk) 09:09, 26 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hi @Aoi! That makes sense, I completely understand! And yes, I can add in references of that nature and will let you know when it's updated. Thank you so much for taking a look! Also, do I need to provide any other information for the name change of the AES Hawaii Power Plant ? Thank you! 2600:1013:B024:69F2:28B9:8ADC:6068:BA9B (talk) 19:34, 26 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hi again @Aoi! Just wanted to let you know that I made the changes you suggested and resubmitted the draft. Let me know what you think - thank you so very much for all your help! Nina.santarpia (talk) 01:59, 27 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, I'm sorry to see the draft was declined again, I understand how disappointing that can be.
My thinking, looking solely at the reviewer's comments (and without having read the article closely myself), is that the reviewer is looking for sources that demonstrate why AES Hawaii, the entity, is notable enough to have an article. Put another way, there are probably a bunch of sources out there that mention AES Hawaii indirectly, but these sources may not be enough to demonstrate that the company itself is notable. For example, a reliable source about the Barbers Point Power Plant may mention AES Hawaii as the operator of the plant. That article might demonstrate that the Barbers Point Power Plant is notable, but it may not demonstrate why AES Hawaii is notable. It really depends on what the source itself says.
I imagine (though I'm not 100% sure) that there are adequate sources out there, but let me take a closer look. I'm a bit swamped at work this week, but hopefully I'll have some time look at the article this weekend. Aoi (青い) (talk) 20:03, 27 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hi @Aoi! Thank you so much, please let me know your thoughts after you take a closer look! Nina.santarpia (talk) 23:04, 30 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Right now, it seems there aren't a lot of sources that provide significant (in-depth) coverage of AES Hawaii the company. Of everything that was in the article when it was last submitted, I think the only independent, in-depth source in the article was this piece (note that I'm not familiar with Green Tech Media so I can't comment on its reliability, though I didn't see any red flags on my quick review). (There are a couple of sources that are borderline--this one, for example.) However, most of the sources don't put a lot of focus on AES Hawaii itself.
Second, there's a still somewhat of an overreliance on non-independent sources, particularly to the AES website, press releases (including press releases from third parties), and segments that were apparently produced as paid consideration (I'm referencing the Living 808 segments specifically--they're cool but things like that are not usually usable as sources). Again, non-independent sources are OK in some circumstances, but if there's an independent source that can be used instead, it's usually better to go with the independent source.
Third, I noticed that many articles reference "AES" instead of "AES Hawaii." This isn't a big deal for me as long as the article in question clearly reference AES's Hawaii operations, but some reviewers may question why AES Hawaii deserves its own article when a standalone article already exists for AES Corporation. (I don't think this needs to be addressed in a specific way right now, but keep this in mind in case a future reviewer brings it up.)
Anyway, I've been editing the article to try to improve the sourcing. I can't guarantee that my edits will help the article get accepted, but I'll see what else I can dig up as far as sources go. Aoi (青い) (talk) Aoi (青い) (talk) 21:36, 1 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
