Suburb - Cheltenham Township exactly meets the Wikipedia definition of "suburb": " A suburb is a residential area or a mixed use area, either existing as part of a city or urban area (as in Australia, China, New Zealand and the United Kingdom), or as a separate residential community within commuting distance of a city (as in the United States, France, Kuwait, and Canada).Some suburbs have a degree of administrative autonomy, and most have lower population densities than inner city neighborhoods. Suburbs first emerged on a large scale in the 19th and 20th centuries as a result of improved rail and road transport, which led to an increase in commuting."

Suburb vs. Non-Suburb[edit]
Just because what Wikipedia says is a suburb, that does not mean every place fits that description. A suburb is a place that was built with housing in focus....which Cheltenham was not. Read up on the history of the township and you'll realize that the township was in existence before much of North Philly and other areas in Montco. Cheltenham was founded on industry, particularly mills powered by Tookany Creek. The mills were in all areas of the township, which is how the township got their respective neighborhoods (Elkins Park, Cheltenham Village, Wyncote, Glenside, etc.) Then after the industrial era came the gilded age with all the mansions, then came the housing development and streetcar era, all much before the GI era and the typical postwar population boom. Look at Upper Dublin, Montgomeryville, etc if you want to find a suburb because they were built with housing in mind to house the population boom. Just because a place is not part of a city, has a lower population density than a city, or is close to a city, doesn't mean it's a suburb. The suburb definition is way overblown and overused. I'm sick of suburbanites calling Cheltenham a suburb and putting in the same category as places like Upper Dublin or much of Montco when in fact it isn't anything like it at all. If people read the history, they would know that. Unfortunately not. To label Cheltenham as a suburb is an insult to everyone who built this township in the 1680's.
