Hi, I just noticed that you "updated" these mountain info boxes. I'm the one who, mostly, set up the prior boxes and I think they were better that way. I'm not not into the mountains project and I realize you were using the standard box format; maybe the mountain template could use some work. Comments are welcome. Thanks, Davenbelle 06:52, 11 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

  • I know what you mean about the template, I think it could do with some border trimming. The beauty of using the template though is that if there is general agreement to add some trimming (like the Taxobox) when it gets changed on the template it gets changed everywhere. Try and start a new thread on the Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Mountains to see if people like the idea of a border. Nomadtales 22:28, 11 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Invitation

[edit]

Hi i'd like to politely invite you to become a player in the online historical role playing game that i belong to - http://games.groups.yahoo.com/group/SHWI-ISOT/ - we've been running it for a while and we could use a player from PNG. PMA 13:22, 28 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Many thanks for your message. Yes, those are Hurley's pictures. I uploaded them myself. I am still having trouble at times when trying to figure the right template for copyrights. Thanks again. Cheers. --Anagnorisis 02:49, 8 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for that info! :) - Gobeirne 18:23, 7 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks about the maps. You have taken some great shots of PNG! Did you walk on the kokoda trail? -- Astrokey44|talk 23:51, 24 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Can you upload the full size version of this image, rather than reduce the size before uploading? Thanks. — 0918BRIAN • 2006-04-6 13:01

A request for assistance

[edit]

Would you support the concept of moving the Earhart "myths" to a separate page or article? The reason for my suggesting this is that the main article should be an accurate and scholarly work while the speculation and conspiracy theories surrounding the disappearance of Amelia Earhart are interesting, they belong in a unique section. Most researchers, as you know, discount the many theories and speculation that has arisen in the years following her last flight. Go onto the Earhart discussion page and register your vote/comments...and a Happy New Year to you as well. Bzuk 03:02 3 January 2007 (UTC).

Mount Ossa

[edit]

couldnt agree more - pity there seems so little third party textual stuff about it (that i can find anyways) . Please dont take my frenchmans cap comment wrong way - more to discourage others getting ideas - rather than comment about yours... cheers SatuSuro 05:44, 1 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Good to see you are using the map for the info - I consider it one of the better sources - please do more! SatuSuro 07:06, 2 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Yah it's great. And all in the one spot. I plan to add more when I get around to it from the history section. Nomadtales 10:48, 2 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Would you be able to check out the west coast range stubs that I did a long time ago? I'd be interested if you had any suggestions for improvement... SatuSuro 03:30, 3 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Conventions

[edit]

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:WikiProject_Mountains#Naming_conventions is the best for a start - SatuSuro 04:38, 6 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The other thing to take very careful note of is the articles are going to go no-where unless we have refs. SatuSuro 04:44, 6 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Australian_places/Archive_2#Lakes.2C_rivers_and_mountains is also very useful SatuSuro 04:02, 7 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The guy who first proposed the project seems to be gone. I took the initiative to activate the project above in his absence, as I personally guess you all have enough members to give it a go. Good luck. John Carter 18:14, 7 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Greetings. I just saw your name signing in on the Backpacking project page. I thought my tagging of the talk pages of PNG and Australian articles on bushwalks might get someone else from the area to join. The NZ one are still to be tagged. Welcome. I would welcome your efforts on the Melanesia project as well. I lived in PNG for 4 years in the 1980s. I see you wrote Mount Wilhelm. A friend of ours was the Principal of the School at the highest point you can get a car to and then start walking, but I never had time when visiting him to get up to the top. --Bduke 06:07, 15 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Mount Albert Edward disambig

[edit]

I notice that you renamed Mount Albert Edward to Mount Albert Edward (British Columbia) but hadn't fixed the various pages that linked to the old one so they were left pointing to the new dab page. I found about a half dozen of them and fixed them up so that is taken care of. --KenWalker | Talk 02:01, 30 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the response. No problem. I was poking around your user page and some of the things you describe. Interesting stuff, thanks for the links. Drop bears, I am skeptical about, or at least I was until I saw the fangs on that beast :-) The two things that prompted me to send you a further note are firstly the mention of the Hunter Valley in the Paterson article. I had never heard of this place until this past Christmas. I spent a couple of nights in Newcastle and drove along the coast and discovered the Hunter Valley. Only found out enough about the area to add it to my list of places to visit for longer sometime. A very nice part of the world. The second item is the Finger Wharf. It looks familiar to me. When I was in Sydney, I took a ferry ride to a part of the harbour north of the city centre and got off and walked around a bit. I have a hunch that the shore I walked along was the Finger Wharf. Any chance of adding a geo coord link (Wikipedia:WikiProject_Geographical_coordinates#Implementation_details) to it? Also, nice photos! (Will watch here for response, if any) Cheers. --KenWalker | Talk 00:07, 31 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. You voted for Bushranger, which has been selected as the new ACOTF. Please help to improve it if you can. Thanks. --Scott Davis Talk 14:56, 15 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Blackwood v. D'Urberville

[edit]

Hello,

There are numerous references to Blackwood on the web if you google it. Full name is Blackwood, Francis Price (1809 - 1854) and a reasonable biography is at www.adb.online.anu.edu.au/biogs/A010105b.htm. This credits him with being captain of the survey ship 'Fly' for three years from 1841 working in Northern Australia and New Guinea.

D'Urville was a Frenchman, captain of a ship called the 'Astrolabe', If he discovered a large river why would he call it the 'Fly'? Perhaps the 'mouche' if the insects were giving him a hard time.

Of course there are many instances of someone making a discovery and someone else getting the credit for it, so I can't definitely say you are wrong, but Blackwood seems the more likely candidate.

The site "geography.about.com/library/misc/ucfly.htm" has this to say:

"But, the Fly wasn't named for a pesky insect -- it was named for a ship. In 1842,
Captain F. P. Blackwood discovered the mouth of the Fly River and named it for the ship he commanded -- the HMS Fly!"

New WikiProject - Australian literature

[edit]

heya, as you were the original nominator for Australian literature as the ACOTF I thought you'd like to know that we are trying to get an Australian Literature Project going. we have a WP Australian literature development page where you can list your interest, and contribute if you like.

there's a lot of work to be done in this area, imo, and the project will really help manage it. feel free to leave a message on my talk page if you have any questions.

hopefully we'll see you around, otherwise thanks for your time. xx baby_ifritah 13:29, 7 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

PNG Place Infoboxes

[edit]

The current info box should be enough for Towns, Cities and Villages, although a separate one needs to be developed, IMHO for:

  • NCD Localities, the fields don't lend them selves to NCD stuff as ' Province' is appended to the end of the {{{Province}}} field in the location map view (see Tabubil)
  • Provincial captials
  • Mine sites

and possibly more other specialized settlements such as missions and compounds. The above info boxes can (I think) be a sub directory of Template:Towns_and_Cities_in_Papua_New_Guinea.

I copied this to the talk page over there, we should move this discussion to that page. Aliasd 06:54, 10 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
