Recent changes

3D models can now be uploaded to Commons. [1]
Page Previews has been updated to use HTML for previews. This has fixed many issues. An A/B test was done on English and German Wikipedia to measure how it is used. Other changes were also made. [2]
Some edits have to be checked against too many conditions before they can trigger an abuse filter. If that is the reason no filter is triggered the edit will be tagged for review. [3]
Auto-saving has been added to the visual editor and the 2017 wikitext editor. Right now it is meant to help if your browser crashes or if you accidentally close a tab. [4]

Problems

The abuse filter did not tag all edits that should have been tagged after last week's MediaWiki version had come to the wikis. It was fixed on 9 March (UTC). [5]

Changes later this week

You can notify users in edit summaries. They will get a ping just as if they had been mentioned on a wiki page. This was originally planned to happen last week. [6]
It is now possible to specify the block parameters for each filter in Special:AbuseFilter. The parameters include block duration and if the user should be blocked from editing their own talk page. The block duration is separate for anonymous and registered users. [7][8]
A hundred Wikimedia wikis will switch to use the Remex parsing library. This is to replace Tidy. It will happen on 13 and 14 March. Other wikis will be recommended to switch soon when they have fixed the errors that must be fixed. Tidy will be removed in the middle of 2018. [9][10][11]

The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 20 March. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 21 March. It will be on all wikis from 22 March (calendar).

In-Context Help and Onboarding is a new project, aiming to improve retention of new wiki editors. The goal is to give them short tutorials and other training experiences based on their activity. Collaboration team is expecting feedback and comments on the project talk page, especially from people working with newcomers.

Changes later this week

Some of the interface icons and text sizes will change slightly, as part of the updates for improved accessibility and consistency. These icons are used in many features, including Notifications, Recent Changes, Beta Features, Visual Editor, 2017 Wikitext Editor, Code Editor, and others. While editor toolbars, dialogs, and menus will appear slightly bigger; elements on special pages will be slightly smaller. Functionality will not change. [15] [16]
The deprecated #toc and #toctitle CSS ids have been removed. If your wiki was still using these for fake Tables of Content (ToC) then these might lose their styling. They can be replaced with .toc and .toctitle classes where appropriate. [17]
TemplateStyles will be deployed to the Wikivoyages on 28 March 2018. [18]
The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 27 March. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 28 March. It will be on all wikis from 29 March (calendar).

Future changes

From 9 April, the sort order of categories will be distorted for a short time. We are upgrading versions of an internationalisation library (ICU) and using a maintenance script to update existing database entries. This will last anywhere from a few hours to a few days, depending on wiki size. Read more details. [19]
Changes are coming to search for Serbian projects. Cyrillic and Latin variants of a word and different grammatical forms of a word will be able to find each other. Read more on MediaWiki in Serbian or English.

Recent changes

Template Wizard script available for testing. It will show up as a puzzle-piece icon in the 2010 WikiEditor. You can click on the icon to insert a template.
The Wikimedia Communities and Contributors survey is to be sent to participants around the world this week. If you are volunteer developer, and have contributed code to any pieces of MediaWiki, gadgets, or tools, please take 20 to 40 minutes to complete the survey.

Problems

MediaWiki deployment train has been rolled back to version 1.31.0-wmf.26 on week 13, due to a multiplication of lost connections during MySQL queries. Some of the recent changes may have not been applied. They will be deployed next week. [21][22][23]
The Notifications badge icons were overlapping other links. This has been fixed. [24]

Changes later this week

The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 3 April. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 4 April. It will be on all wikis from 5 April (calendar).
User subpages ending in .json will now be protected from other people editing them, like .js and .css pages already are. If you have a tool that stores static configuration, you can now use a subpage like User:Example/mygadget.json to do this without concerns. [25]
Tidy will be replaced by RemexHtml on the next set of wikis. On April 4, we plan to turn off Tidy on all Wikiquotes (except frwikiquote) and Wikimedia chapters and user groups wikis. 23 wikis will have Tidy replaced this time. [26][27][28]
AbuseFilter will transition to use OOUI starting April 4, and the rule editor will also be changed to a CodeEditor (ACE) similar to what is found on user JavaScript pages. The move to OOUI will continue over the next few weeks. [29] [30]
In Special:Preferences, the preference "Reload the watchlist automatically whenever a filter is changed (JavaScript required)" is now only visible for users who have opt-out the New Filters for the Watchlist. [31]
You can see names of individual abuse filters in Special:AbuseLog. Now if the name of an abuse filter contains some wikisyntax like links, it will not change to a link when displayed. [32]
You can now search through filter patterns at Special:AbuseFilter. You may specify either a plain string or a regular expression and the matching filters will show a snippet of their pattern with the match highlighted. [33]

Future changes

If you're using, creating or improving Lua modules, you can give your feedback to help harmonizing the modules across wikis and add more useful functions.
On April 11th, we plan to turn off Tidy on all wikis with less than 50 entries in all high priority linter categories. About 60 wikis will have Tidy replaced. Currently about 600 wikis have had Tidy replaced and we have another 300 wikis to go. We plan to finish this transition from Tidy to RemexHtml by end of June 2018. Please follow T175706 to monitor progress of Tidy replacement. [34][35]

As expected, a greatly increased number of unsuitable articles and candidates for deletion are showing up in the feed again, and the backlog has since increased already by ~30%. Please consider reviewing a few extra articles each day.

Paid editing

Now that ACTRIAL is inoperative pending discussion, please be sure to look for tell-tale signs of undisclosed paid editing. Contact the creator if appropriate, and submit the issue to WP:COIN if necessary.

Subject-specific notability guidelines

The box at the right contains each of the subject-specific notability guidelines, please review any that are relevant BEFORE nominating an article for deletion.
Reviewers are requested to familiarise themselves with the new version of the notability guidelines for organisations and companies. A further discussion is currently taking place at: Can a subject specific guideline invalidate the General Notability Guideline?

Guideline and policy news

Administrators who have been desysopped due to inactivity are now required to have performed at least one (logged) administrative action in the past 5 years in order to qualify for a resysop without going through a new RfA.
Editors who have been found to have engaged in sockpuppetry on at least two occasions after an initial indefinite block, for whatever reason, are now automatically considered banned by the community without the need to start a ban discussion.
The notability guideline for organizations and companies has been substantially rewritten following the closure of this request for comment. Among the changes, the guideline more clearly defines the sourcing requirements needed for organizations and companies to be considered notable.
The six-month autoconfirmed article creation trial (ACTRIAL) ended on 14 March 2018. The post-trial research report has been published. A request for comment is now underway to determine whether the restrictions from ACTRIAL should be implemented permanently.

Technical news

There will soon be a calendar widget at Special:Block, making it easier to set expiries for a specific date and time.

Arbitration

The Arbitration Committee is considering a change to the discretionary sanctions procedures which would require an editor to appeal a sanction to the community at WP:AE or WP:AN prior to appealing directly to the Arbitration Committee at WP:ARCA.

Miscellaneous

A discussion has closed which concluded that administrators are not required to enable email, though many editors suggested doing so as a matter of best practice.
The Foundations' Anti-Harassment Tools team has released the Interaction Timeline. This shows a chronologic history for two users on pages where they have both made edits, which may be helpful in identifying sockpuppetry and investigating editing disputes.

Recent changes

Some pages have templates that describe problems with that article. There is now more information for mobile readers and what is wrong with the article and how they could help fix it. [36]
You can now thank users for many more actions than edits to a page. This was one of the top ten requests in the Wishlist Survey last year. [37]
The sort order of categories will have errors for a short time starting Monday 9 April (UTC). We are upgrading versions of an internationalisation library (ICU) and using a script to update the database. This will take between a few hours and a few days depending on wiki size. You can read more details. [38]
Tag filter titles will now work better on wikis where the tag filter title is in a language that is written in another direction than the language of that wiki. This could for example be an English title (written from left to right) on a Hebrew or an Arabic wiki (written from right to left). [39]

Problems

The bookmark icon for saved filters on the recent changes page disappeared because of new icon changes. This has now been fixed. [40]
For a week in March rollbacks got both the rollback and the undo tag on the recent changes page and other pages where you see tags. This has now been fixed. [41]

Deletion of Policybazaar page from Wikipedia

Policybazaar's Wikipedia page was deleted recently from Wikipedia with reasons - notability. However, the organization is a reputed firm in India with several mentions in notable news/media sources. I've bought a health insurance policy from Policybazaar and I'm really very happy with their aftersales services and it's a well-known insurance aggregator in India. It has a large chunk of customers, hence it should have a wiki page so that people come to know more about it and its services. It has a good brand value in the Indian market. The bottom line is that the company does not appear to meet Wikipedia's notability guidelines to qualify for an article. See the deletion log page for the article, and note how the article was deleted per the 2009 Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Policybazaar.com AfD discussion in part for lacking notability. The second and third deletions of the article were for speedy deletion reasons, some revision deletion occurred for copyright infringement at a later time, and the fourth and most recent deletion of the entire article per Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Policybazaar was also for notability problems. Note that while a company or organization may be notable in other arenas of the world, Wikipedia has specific notability guidelines that pertain only to Wikipedia. Nomad Foods - request for help with edits

Hello @Northamerica1000:,

My name is Sinead Noble and I work in the communications team at Nomad Foods.

I'm seeking to correct a number of inaccuracies about Nomad Foods on its Wikipedia page. In adherence to Wikipedia's best practice guidelines, and due to my conflict of interest, I am not making these edits directly and hoping that either you or someone you recommend from the Wikipedia community can make them on my behalf. These are as follows:

1. Nomad Foods is not a British Virgin Islands-based food company (paragraph one, line one) and our headquarters are not “Road Town, Tortola, British Virgin Islands” (box out, right hand side). Nomad Foods is a “UK-headquartered European frozen food company” (paragraph one, line one). Please refer to our 2016 annual filing with the Securities Exchange Commission, https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1651717/000165171718000011/nomd-20171231x20f.htm which confirms that our HQ address is “No. 1 New Square, Bedfont Lakes Business Park, Feltham, Middlesex TW14 8HA” (box out, right hand side).

2. It is not correct that 85% of Nomad Foods’ revenues are “comprised of Germany, Austria, Italy and the UK” (paragraph one, line two). It is accurate to say that “Nomad Foods’ five largest countries – UK, Italy, Germany, France and Sweden – accounted for a combined 75% of total sales in 2016.” (paragraph one, line two). Please refer to page F-23 of our annual filing with the Securities Exchange Commission https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1651717/000119312517103513/d255179d20f.htm which provides detailed revenue information by country for the full year 2016. Page F-23 can be found two-thirds of the way down the webpage.

3. Nomad Foods was not founded on 1 April 2014 (box out, right hand side) Nomad Foods was formed on “1 June 2015” (box out, right hand side) following the completion of the acquisition of Iglo Food Holdings. Please refer to the announcement press release which you will see is dated 1 June 2015 https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1651717/000119312517103513/d255179d20f.htm.

4. The page states that “Nomad subsequently purchased the Findus Group, excluding its operations in the United Kingdom, in November 2015” (paragraph three, line one). This is not correct. The acquisition included the Findus brand in the UK. Please refer to the Daily Mirror (https://www.mirror.co.uk/news/business/findus-crispy-pancakes-been-saved-7634162) regarding the Findus Crispy Pancake product, confirming that the Findus brand in the UK is part of Nomad Group. My suggested edit is that the clause “excluding its operations in the United Kingdom” is deleted and that the rest of the sentence is retained.

5. The financial information is from 2014 and therefore outdated (box out, right hand side) The latest financial results can be found in our 2017 annual filing with the SEC (https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1651717/000165171718000013/ex991pressrelease20171231.htm). As noted, Nomad Foods’ 2017 revenues were “EUR 1.957 billion”, operating income was “EUR 243 million”, total equity was “EUR 1.853 billion” euro and number of employees is “3,875 (31 December 2017)”.

@Sinead Noble: Thanks for disclosing your conflict of interest. I notice that you also posted this information on the article's talk page, which I would have recommended had you not done so. In this manner, interested users can provide input. I am busy with other matters in life and on-wiki, and don't forsee myself becoming involved in the matters you have brought up here.

Your best bet is to refer to Wikipedia:Simple COI request and utilize the {{Request edit}} template on the article's talk page to request for an editor to remedy the matter. FYI, you can refer to Category:Requested edits to verify that an edit request has properly posted for others to see. If time passes, nobody helps out, and you decide to make the changes yourself, please be sure to add the Template:Connected contributor (paid) template to the article's talk page along with the pertinent information to fill-in about yourself within the template. Profiling statistics for an abuse filter tell how often edits match the filter. The statistics for the abuse filters were reset after 10000 actions. Wikis can now decide to reset it more or less often. They can file a phabricator task to do so. [43]
Abuse filters will now treat integers and floats more precisely. For example, 5/2 was rounded down to 2 but will now be 2.5 and 2*4 will be the integer 8 and not the floating-point number 8.0. Division values are the only ones changed. For the rest only strict comparisons (=== and !==) will be affected leaving the values unchanged. [44][45]
The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 17 April. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 18 April. It will be on all wikis from 19 April (calendar).

Advice?

Long story short, I tried to clean up some NPOV issues in this article, but my edits keep getting reverted by Pahlevun (who seems to be heavily involved in all Iran Regime-related pages and their oppositions). Tried to take it to the article's Talk page (and asked for others to contribute) to no avail. Recently came across this AfD nomination, and wonder if E.M.Gregory's suggestion would also be viable for this article? The article has a long history of attacks and COI edits, so reverting to an earlier (more neutral) time and protecting the page may a good solution. Thanks for the feedback! Hello London Hall: There's a lot of various matters to consider in your post above. I notice that you started an RfC on the talk page, which will hopefully receive some input from other editors. First of all, I am not well-versed in this particular subject matter, and to devise an opinion about reverting, I would have to first perform research and then learn about the topic itself. I really don't presently have time to do all of this, though. In real life, I'm busier these days, and the net connection where I'm presently staying isn't always reliable. As such, I don't want to commit to something I wouldn't be able to follow through upon in a relatively timely manner. A request for page protection could very well be denied, since recently there are only a few editors working on the article, and there has not been a great deal of recent reversions. You could post neutrally-worded notifications of the RfC on the talk pages of the various WikiProjects listed atop the article's talk page, which may lend to more input (see WP:APPNOTE, part of the WP:CANVASS page, for information about devising appropriate notifications). Portals WikiProject update, April 22, 2018

Reboot

The WikiProject reboot has been a success: the new re-envisioned project is up and running, with new members, ongoing discussions about automation, design, and upkeep; maintained task queques; and updates to members, like this, the very first one!

The RfC

As you know, there's a proposal to delete all portals. It started out looking pretty dismal for portals, with primarily posts supporting their demise. It turned out that the proposer didn't post a deletion notice on the very pages being nominated for deletion (a requirement for all deletion discussions). Once that was done, a flood of opposition came in and has apparently turned the tide.

RfCs generally run for 30 days. It started April 8th, and so it has about 14 more days to run its course.

The more work we can do during that time on the portals, the stronger the reasons for keeping them will be. And the more prepared we will be for any MfDs that follow the closing of the RfC.

AWB?

You may be wondering why we asked for AWB experience in the member-sign-up list.

We are gearing up to do maintenance runs on the entire set of portals, and the more people we have who can use AWB, the better.

But we're not quite ready to start this yet.

To be able to use AWB on the portals, we first need to know what the end result needs to be. Like on the news sections, do we comment out the out-of-date ones, or do we place the code to activate the newsbot on those pages? That would require an assessment of WikiNews and its news generating performance (areas covered, volume in each area), etc.

Another area we're gearing up for, to do passes with AWB, are upgrades to the intro sections of portals. Many of these have static (copied/pasted) excerpts that go stale over time.

We're trying to figure out how to make self-updating excerpts to replace the existing static excerpts that are on many portals, and once this is done, AWB will be used to place the new code. See the discussion on this at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Portals#Discussions about selective transclusion in intros.

"What can I do?"

There are 3 major areas of activity right now:

There are a few hundred existing portals that are missing from this list.

The list of missing entries, and instructions on what to do, can be found at Portal talk:Contents/Portals#These are not listed yet.

We need everybody's help on this. It's a big chore for one persons. But, many hands make light work. Please help chip away at this chore as much as you can. A little each day, form all of us, will get this done pretty quick.

Familiarize yourself with the portal system

In addition to browsing the portals in the 2 lists mentioned in the section above, you should take a look at the portal name space itself and what is in it.

That can be done at Wikipedia:WikiProject Portals#Watchlist.

Join in on the discussions

There are discussions on many aspects of the WikiProject's operations, with more to come.

Such as about the purposes and functions of portals, design discussions, and so on.

There's even a automated design discussion over at Village Pump Technical, on selective transclusion.
