Article assessment

I'm curious why you are adding evaluations to the WikiProject Oregon articles that overlap with WikiProject Christianity. Because a) we don't have an assessment system in place and b) if we do set one up, we'll probably want to do the prioritization ourselves, because the articles may differ in importance from that of the Christianity project. It's very nice of you to help out, but like I said, since we don't have an assessent system, it's probably a waste of your energy to add assessments to project boxes that don't have one. You can see if the assessment stuff pops up in the template by using show preview, I think, to see which projects are using assessments. I can't speak for the other WikiProjects, but I'm not sure if you're in a position to evaluate the importance of our project's articles. For example, someone might be a very prominent figure in Oregon history, yet their connection to Christiany might be minor in comparision. Or vice versa. Happy editing! I can appreciate that viewpoint. I didn't realize that you guys didn't have an assessment system in place. I was mostly cross-assessing with the Biography and Calvinism projects, both of which I'm familiar with and which have similar goals. I think all projects can agree on the "Stub/Start/B/GA/..." assessments for the most part, but as far as importance of the project, I can only guess (while, for example, a governor who happened to be a Christian would likely be high on a certain state's list, and the biography project, but relatively lower in the scope of Christianity. I've tried to account for that in my past assessments, but I think you raise a good point, so I'll stick to projects I'm very familiar with from here on out. Thanks for letting me know. Re: GCA Infobox

I am, and have been, concerned about any infobox that lists the founding date of the movement as something other than 1965 or 1970. The causal reader of the article could very easily become confused, or take it to mean the movement didn't really begin until 2006 or what have you. That is why I would prefer the timeline, if anything. Personally I'm not really sure we do need any sort of "box." Why not just put the picture on the right hand side with a caption and no date? Better. I still don't know if I feel an infobox is appropriate because it only represents one subsidary or portion of time of the movement. What about people who only know the movement as "Great Commission Ministries?" There are probably as many "GCM" campus ministries as GCC churches right? GCC is a sort of parent/sister organization of GCM (GCM runs things like campus churches, staff admin, mission trips, while GCC is more of the local church oversight org. At least as best as I understand things. What would be the best way to communicate this? Is there a GCA logo out there somewhere? Then we could put that, the GCC one, and the GCA one all in order on the infobox with a short description of them all. Nswinton 18:28, 10 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

They both look good to me. My only question is the accuracy of GCAC changed its name to GCC. I'm just not sure if it's true, I'm not saying that it isn't. As I understand, GCAC simply goes by GCC currently, not sure if there's an official name change per se (too busy to look it up at the moment, sorry). For Xanthius, there are is at least a 2 to 1 ratio of GCC churches to GCM churches. Plus, most of the campus churches are actually GCC churches, their staff are just paid by GCM. There are 150 total churches, 49 campuses, and I believe only about 20-25 are actually in the GCM mentorship structure. Gatorgalen 20:02, 10 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

How 'bout this then? This shows that GCC, GCM and GCLA are all within the GCA structure (admittedly the wording in the captions needs work). It also does not give any single founding date (but instead refers to the Background section). Do you guys think the "Key People" section is necessary? Maybe after there are some stubs for most of those guys, maybe, but not for now?

That GCA box is horribly gaudy IMHO. Sorry. Also a note to Xanthius - is there seriously any chance of someone thinking it started in 2006? I think that would take a remarkably unintelligent person. Gatorgalen 05:30, 11 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Ha ha, that "founder" link is automatically there? Someone is gonna take offense there cause it will hit too close to home! I don't care, it made me laugh. Anyway, I think this new version looks fine. If I had to be picky, I'd re-word "planting and building churches" so it doesn't sound like a missions group that goes places and literally builds new church buildings (it's very close to a description of a mission trip to Mexico that a few friends went on where people just built new church buildings). not sure where that's at, I do see "church planting, youth events, leadership development, and church growth" on the GCC site. In retrospect, it makes more sense to include growth because some of GCC's churches weren't planted by GCC in the first place. The Great Commission church movement began in 1970 with a focus on planting and building churches that are devoted to Jesus Christ and fulfilling the Great Commission: "Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age," (Matthew 28:19, 20). It's nice. I would still prefer it if GCM was also represented in the box, since it's such a big part of the movement, but I am okay with using this one with a few changes. Key people is missing Dennis Clark. Who is Chris Martin? As for 'Focus': "planting and building churches" is slightly inaccurate, since as of 1991 (according to Kane Associates) the movement had not built a single church building. Chris Martin is on the GC board, (see gccweb.org) but I have no idea how noteworthy he is. I am not sure I've heard of him personally, and his face isn't familiar to me. Okay, I see what you're saying--the focus is not real estate development. I don't think any of us actually think of GC as an intrepid group of Amish carpenters, daily erecting sturdy wooden buildings on the frontiers of evangelism, but it might appear that way to outsiders as worded. Organization development is a more appropriate translation of that, and so I propose that we retain the wording but link accordingly, especially since
  • we've already delineated GCC as evangelical
  • the church building article reads as an architectural piece.
  • we are infoboxing GCC as a non-profit organization
  • the Wiktionary definition of the verb build[2] includes 6 infinitive disambiguations including:
    • "to construct" exists but discounted here with the Kane Association citation
    • 2 examples of "to form" already covered in planting.
    • 2 instances of "to develop" and another of "to increase or strengthen" seemingly corroborated by the idea of "organization development".
Just as with the Slogan field inherent in the infobox, all organizations including non-profits seemingly have a certain sovereignty to self-definition in the form of mission statements and the like. This is how I found the word "focus" used at the GCC official site, and for anyone else to define such a vague parameter as "focus" for the organization but the organization itself wouldn't be appropriate IMO. Additionally, the organization should definitely retain its right to re-define itself as well, and so if the word focus is used differently at the official site, Wikipedia would need to change accordingly. I know that additive reasoning is WP:OR but I hope *pant pant pant* I've presented a subtractive case for this definition that might satisfy the urge for balance, clarity, and objectivity for all editors. Right, but the overall deal is that a GDFL on that photo also would give me the right to distribute the photo, and possibly even paste the head on other photos for parody, etc. The most practical application for that is that it would give Wikipedia the right to reprint it in the for-sale ROM, but GNU isn't specific to a single use like permissions are. If it isn't officially under GDFL, make sure you obtain that license if you're going to post it as such. It will save everyone a lot of headaches later down the road. I've been reviewing your edits. You are making progress but i havent really seen you write an article with passion to date. yet, by no means does this demean your contributions. I was very impressed to see the initiative you took to dissolve some controversy over the neutrality of some articles. I can see that your heart and knowledge lies with the religious articles... I'm very excited to see some major contributions \ rebuilds \ creations from you on this. If you feel you need any guidance on this let me know. I'm not talking about little things but more of a stricter Manual of Style check and Wikipedia policies as well. I know you have the potential to create some good articles and even some featured articles if you want to. I would be happy to look over some of your work, if you start working on more in depth edits.
On top of this, I find this to be more of a mentoring then adoption as you are not new. We are taking you to the next level, not from 0 -> editor but from editor to hopefully an administrator one day. With this, I have asked a few other adopters to come and look over your work for you, so that you can get the most out of this program. There's a new source I can't properly evaluate having not read it. Might want to pick it up since it is a secondary source. Hi. I'm new to this as well, so I'll try to answer as best as possible. The copyright for the image you've provided seems to be fine. However, just include a link of the source from which the image was obtained. Advice on "Christian Church" dispute

Thanks again for your advice and input on the "Christian Church" article.

I was hoping to ask for some mentoring advice from a neutral party. Johnbod and I don't seem to be making any headway on our disagreements regarding the merger of CC and OHCAC. We've chewed up a lot of space on the CC talk page with no resolution. You and John Carter chimed in with support for the merger but Johnbod seems unconvinced and, frankly, 4 people is not a major consensus. Also, Johnbod really seems to want to change the entire focus of the CC article which I disagree with as well.

I proposed to him that we take a straw poll on the Christianity Project page on two proposals for how the Christian Church article should be focused. The intention is to settle the issue that way. Is this the most reasonable way to handle this, in your opinion? I'm frankly getting tired of being in a discussion that's going nowhere but I don't feel I have the moral authority to say my opinion wins.

Hi. I've put the importance tag on for you, since I've done that sort of thing before, but I'm busyish at the moment, and may not get to the "todo" one (which I have to admit I can't see the advantage of -- I like the approach used on the talk page of the John Calvin article better :) ).

Before you think I'm brilliant, I just copied and pasted the code from the WPCalvinism template. If you're keen to get the todo list going, you could try the same thing yourself -- find the right spot in the template, paste in the stuff from the other page, and see how it works (although you may want to test in a sandbox :) ).

As far as copy/paste goes, there are two things to keep in mind:
  • Finding the right piece to copy is one of the hard parts
  • There are usually a few obvious changes to make (eg. changing "Calvinism" to "Christianity"), but that's usually fairly straightforward if you selected the right piece to copy.

  • It has been proposed by John Carter that the various other projects which relate to Christianity ought to all at least tag those articles which fall within their scope. That way, this project would have a better idea which articles do not fall within the specific scope of any of the other related projects. Articles can be "tagged" by placing {{ChristianityWikiProject}} in the articles talk page.
