FYI

RE: "Comment, Wikipedia's policy implies that if an article fails the notability criteria, the first option is to merge the article into another, rather than outright deletion [12]. Re-directs are cheap. Therefore making a note to this effect in the AfD discussion, particularly if there is an existing article where the merge can occur, should be made. Even if the admin closes the debate as "delete", asking the closing admin nicely on his talk page to undelete the article and redirect it often works in my experience. Martintg (talk) 03:55, 14 May 2009 (UTC)"
That is really facinating, I never thought of this before. I will add this to my list of excellent points to bring up in an AfD. Ikip (talk) 06:36, 14 May 2009 (UTC)

Australia?

If you're from Australia, why are you exclusively interested in Baltic affairs in Wikipedia? Offliner (talk) 08:13, 13 May 2009 (UTC)

And by "exclusively", I take you mean "also interested in France, Karl Marx, contemporary Russian politics, Finnish weirdos, South American international relations, elections in Ukraine, and genocidal madmen from Balkan". ΔιγουρενΕμπρος! 08:41, 13 May 2009 (UTC)

So what? Your buddy Russavia claims to be from Australia too, why are you not questioning his exclusive interest in Russian affairs in Wikipedia? Or is there something about him you are not revealing? --Martintg (talk) 20:22, 13 May 2009 (UTC)

I'm only asking because it might be interesting to know. Tasmania is quite far away from the Baltics, so maybe there is an exciting story behind your interest. Maybe you're a Baltic emigrant or studied Baltic history at the Uni? Of course, you do not have to answer. Offliner (talk) 18:32, 15 May 2009 (UTC)
As far as I know he is as just much an Australian as Russavia is ;-). And Martin's userpage says he's an engineer, so he's unlikely to be Estonian philologist. You note for example, that I am, on the other hand Estonian but write mostly on topics concerning Russia. Wikipedia is good place for people with some very specific inetrests :D --Miacek (t) 18:55, 15 May 2009 (UTC)
Offliner, if you want an exciting story, the grand parents of a girl I knew were ethnic Russian refugees, from Narva in fact, who fled the Bolshevik terror of 1917 eventually arriving in Australia. They would spin in their graves to know that young Russians such as yourself seemingly attempt to white wash the heinous crimes of Bolshevist Russia. Martintg (talk) 02:44, 16 May 2009 (UTC)

Hi, Martin. What exactly makes Oleg Platonov's views "significant" on the Baltics? What about Mr. Platonov in regard to his being a "significant" source? PasswordUsername (talk) 00:20, 22 May 2009 (UTC)

Oleg Platonov is notable (he has his own Wikipedia article), and viewpoints that can be attributed to notable people are thus significant enough for inclusion, with regard to due weight. Please read the relevant policies on NPOV. --Martintg (talk) 00:25, 22 May 2009 (UTC)

Eastern Bloc

Don't want to make a huge deal about this, but there is an effort by a group of editors (usual group acting there, though in fairness they would dispute that) at the Eastern Bloc article that, as a result (with every iteration) dumps any map in the Lede depicting the USSR's SSRs. This includes deleting the Baltic states SSR depictions, which is why I figured that I would drop you a note given your interest on the region. I'm not sure how you come out on it, but my main reason for including them is that the article discusses the USSR's SSRs, thus it is helpful information, and it is within the EB. The discussion is on the Talk:Eastern Bloc‎ page.

I left Peter V, who appears very knowledgeable and familiar with the major sources on Baltic-related issues of the period, a note, and I figured that I would drop you one as well. If you're interested in the topic and period, you might want to throw the article on your watchlist as it draws a fair number of edits because of its breadth of scope.Mosedschurte (talk) 07:52, 28 May 2009 (UTC)

Dear Martintg,
I second Mosedschurte. I invite you to leave some comments on the Talk:Eastern Bloc regarding the map of Eastern bloc and related issues. I realize that our points of view do not coincide (and sometimes even are opposite), so it makes your point of view a fortiori valuable for me.
With respect,
--Paul Siebert (talk) 16:50, 28 May 2009 (UTC)
To be honest I have not formed a particular viewpoint on how this map ought to be presented, so I don't know it I can offer anything useful. It seems me to be a matter of style. As to Paul's conviction that our viewpoints do not coincide as a rule, I find that rather intriguing. --Martintg (talk) 06:45, 29 May 2009 (UTC)

Discrimination

Fresh news from the discrimination front: [2]. Google translation at [3].

This is the very "fellow countrymen" organisation Kremlin has set up after the Bronze Night. ΔιγουρενΕμπρος! 08:52, 5 June 2009 (UTC)

If they want the same status as Estonian citizens, why didn't they get Estonian citizenship in the first place? The mind boggles. Martintg (talk) 10:03, 5 June 2009 (UTC)
The "foreigner fellow" status appears to be some sort of separate but equal construct. But I might be misunderstanding something. ΔιγουρενΕμπρος! 11:26, 5 June 2009 (UTC)
Well, unfortunately the "activists" while complaining of apartheid, when it comes down to it, advocate for apartheid as they want all the benefits without making the commitment and without integrating into wider society. My mother had to learn the language and had to pass her history exam to become a U.S. citizen. Not her choice, just the rules. It's not too much to ask for, by any country, to request a demonstration of that basic level of commitment to the country one calls home. (Russia has a set of rules and circumstance which make applying for citizenship almost impossible, BTW.)
The majority of self-identified primary Russophones in Latvia have long been citizens; that there's a some massive issue in Estonia or Latvia is an increasingly untenable position as compared to the facts. (Not to mention WP:OR contentions of discrimination quoting news articles where new Estonian citizens are proud of their accomplishment!) PetersV       TALK 14:48, 5 June 2009 (UTC)
Except when Russia thinks it can benefit from the citizens, as in South Ossetia. As you recall, Russia made it very easy for ethnic Ossetians to get Russian passport there, while Kokoity made it very hard for them to travel to Georgia to update Georgian passports, and even, strange as it may be, to travel to ethnic Georgian settlements in South Ossetian areas. ΔιγουρενΕμπρος! 16:33, 5 June 2009 (UTC)
I think your comparison is flawed. Your mother obviously wanted to go to the US. Baltic Russians had no choice. Besides, having to learn a world language such as English is a completely different thing from having to learn a small, obscure language such as Estonian which will not be useful to you anywhere outside Estonia. If you were forced to live in the Central African Republic, would you be willing to learn the local language in order to integrate, or would you prefer to stay within the zone of the American expat community and speak only English? Offliner (talk) 15:08, 5 June 2009 (UTC)
As you recall, very few countries have been issuing visas into the alien passports. So, citizenshipless people in Estonia and Latvia have been living in these countries for twenty years, never going overseas for a visit. Are you for real? I mean -- suggesting that people who never travel outside their "small, obscure country" being concerned about "world languages" brings the favourite quote of Ebenezer Scrooge to mind. ΔιγουρενΕμπρος! 16:40, 5 June 2009 (UTC)
Since last year, Russia has been discriminating against citizens of Estonia and Latvia by way of requiring higher visa fees from then than from non-citizens. Maybe this a similar ploy? ΔιγουρενΕμπρος! 16:30, 5 June 2009 (UTC)

Another interesting indicator of discrimination is that not only did Russia offer its citizenships to former USSR citizens rather freely in 1990s, but Russia has been actively inviting Russians to move to Russia. I mean -- Russia has been offering to cover the moving expenses and pay some money to Russian people who used to live outside Russia and are returning to Russia, because Russia is concerned about aging population and depopulation. It would be interesting to see how many people have taken up this chance to leave the countries where they're being discriminated against. ΔιγουρενΕμπρος! 16:56, 5 June 2009 (UTC)

I think it was actually the Kaliningrad oblast that the 'compatriots' were invited to (hardly an improvement compared with Kohtla-Järve or Lasnamäe) ^_^ --Miacek (t) 10:13, 6 June 2009 (UTC)

I think the idea proposed by Sanstein is that 1RR would be imposed on the article. The benefit is that there wouldn't be a need to identify group members, since a sock could avoid that anyway. --Martintg (talk) 04:58, 20 June 2009 (UTC)

Estonian history

I have a question about the wording of Template:History of Estonia Timeline. Why is the Soviet period called "Soviet occupation", but all other periods are simply "Danish rule", "Russian rule", etc. Wasn't the reason for Danish rule that the Danes conquered Estonia? Also, why is Russian rule 1721-1918 not "occupation"? Offliner (talk) 17:19, 31 August 2009 (UTC)

International law is the likely cause, dear colleague. Unfortunately, there were also times when slavery was a perfectly normal business, whereas now it is probably referred to as a crime against humanity. You can't say (in strict sense) that Genghis Khan occupied Russia; on the other hand, claiming Hitler did not occupy Russia would be gravely erroneous. --Miacek and his crime-fighting dog (woof!) 17:24, 31 August 2009 (UTC)
How exactly does international law explain that the Danish rule was not an occupation? Offliner (talk) 17:30, 31 August 2009 (UTC)
Be careful citing international law, as one can then ask to quote the actual case law involved, rather than mere opinions on what may or may not be. Some regard it as an occupation, some do not. Requests for such information in the past have gone unanswered. Anyway, I have taken the opportunity to rename it to Estonia in the USSR, as it is totally WP:NPOV. --Russavia Dialogue 18:19, 31 August 2009 (UTC)
International law is not about "case law", it is as Wikipedia's own article states: "International law is the term commonly used for referring to the system of implicit and explicit agreements that bind together nation-states in adherence to recognized values and standards" The use of military means to resolve territorial issues was renounced internationally in 1928 with the Kellogg–Briand Pact, which the Soviet Union was a signatory (and Russia being the legal successor). The pact prohibits nations from annexing territory by force. The Stimson Doctrine further reinforced the Pact by establishing the precedent under international law, of the doctrine of Ex injuria jus non oritur, ""illegal acts cannot create law"", i.e. lawful annexation cannot follow illegal occupation. Before the Kellogg–Briand Pact, it was perfectly legal for nation states to annex territory by force, now it is a crime against peace. --Martintg (talk) 20:48, 31 August 2009 (UTC)
To begin with, we have European Court of Human Rights cases on Occupation of Baltic States (you haven't edited that page, yet. You might want to take a look). Many more interesting sources can be found in this article. --Miacek and his crime-fighting dog (woof!) 18:23, 31 August 2009 (UTC)
The EU courts are not actual international cases, per se. They are only offering their opinion on international law. One need only look at the countries who recognise Kosovo as independent, claim that Abkhazian and South Ossetian independence is illegal, yet there is not yet any international case law on this. This is exactly the same case. I am aware of the Occupation of the Baltic States article, take a look at the talk page and one can see that editors totally ignore questions which are asked of them, when they claim that a majority of countries did not recognise the de jure incorporation of the Baltic states into the USSR, yet they are absolutely unable to provide opinions from the huge number of states which gained independence in the 1950s-1970s. Anyway, it will be impossible for one to say that what I changed it to is not NPOV in every sense of the word? --Russavia Dialogue 18:39, 31 August 2009 (UTC)
Completely not NPOV as Estonia was never legally "in" or part of the USSR. Please don't push your POV under the guise of NPOV. VЄСRUМВА  ♪  20:19, 31 August 2009 (UTC)

I am sorry, however, prior to the 20th century war was a legal means of settling disputes. In the 20th, not, so one cannot speak of earlier legal occupation. This has been gone over ad nauseum before. Russavia et al., do not rename events to make a WP:POINT to suit your personal POV. Soviets occupied, Nazis occupied, Soviets re-occupied. Your last edit of the Soviet war crimes article demonstrates that you are not satisfied with wording. I took these words directly form the source ( William Korey. The Origins and Development of Soviet Anti-Semitism: An Analysis. Slavic Review, Vol. 31, No. 1 (Mar., 1972), pp. 111-135), it is the article in the academic journal. If these words are acceptable there, I believe they are equally good for WP. However, if you disagree, feel free to reword. Otherwise, I'll remove the tag in close future.

Divisional symbols

Sure, but I don't know how reliable these websites are, the two seem to repeat the same thing, but don't provide any references to support their claims. I recall reading other sources that state that is was used informally. --Martintg (talk) 21:26, 16 September 2009 (UTC)
Well, seems that none of us has the sources to verify our claims. The Arbitration Committee recently passed a motion to open a case to investigate allegations surrounding a private Eastern European mailing list. The contents of the motion can be viewed here.

You have been named as one of the parties to this case at the request of the Arbitration Committee, here. Please take note of the explanations given in italics at the top of that section; if you have any further questions about the list of parties, please feel free to contact me on my talk page.

The Committee has explicitly requested that evidence be presented within one week of the case opening; ie. by September 25. Evidence can be presented on the evidence subpage of the case; please ensure that you follow the Committee instructions regarding the responsible and appropriate submission of evidence, as set out in the motion linked previously, should you choose to present evidence.

Please further note that, due to the exceptional nature of this case (insofar as it centers on the alleged contents of a private mailing list), the Committee has decided that the normal workshop format will not be used. The notice near the top of the cases' workshop page provides a detailed explanation of how it will be used in this case.

Being shocked by your accusations here, I very unequivocally demand from you to present clear evidence that I have been involved in on-wiki or off-wiki communication, discussing coordinated editing WP articles, and breaking the WP policy, with any of users you named (Offliner, Russavia, PasswordUsername, HistoricWarrior007, Igny, Shotlandiya, and Vlad fedorov). Unless you are able to present any such evidence, I expect from you an apologise for these accusations - to me, and other users you named as a members of this "team".FeelSunny (talk) 11:14, 15 October 2009 (UTC)

Relocation of EEML evidence

Just a notice: For a few users I have relocated your EEML evidence to a sub-page.

The reasons for this are because your sections are now so long it was becoming impossible to navigate and decipher who wrote what, particularly towards the end of sections. This effectively rendered your evidence as unusable, which was not a good thing.

Rather than reduce the size of your evidence (which I deemed as unfair) I have removed them to private subpages. These are yours and yours alone to edit. They certain make interpreting your evidence MUCH easier.

The downside is that when you update your evidence it does not go into the history log of the principal evidence page. Hence I suggest you add a brief "Updated evidence on ..." note beneath your evidence heading on the main evidence page. This will alert people to changes on your subpage. An extra bit of hassle I know, but it a small price for having evidence which can be understood.

Also feel free to create a single sentence description of your main headings and insert it on the main page below the link I have added. See for an example from a previous case.

I hope none of you are upset by this - I assure you my only objective was to increase the usability of your evidence.

Sincerely, Manning (talk) 23:01, 20 October 2009 (UTC)

ANI discussion

Hello, Nug. This message is being sent to inform you that there currently is a discussion at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/Incidents regarding an issue with which you may have been involved. Thank you. Singularity42 (talk) 22:26, 30 October 2009 (UTC)

You really need to explain

Since you and Biophys have been bringing this one up, and you've included it in your evidence, please take a good look at [6]. I'd like to have some good answers – and please do not reply by addressing me by any first names. You already know that this is not kosher with me, and why you would insist on doing this other than to be offensive or make a WP:POINT is beyond me altogether. Anti-Nationalist (talk) 19:46, 31 October 2009 (UTC)

Please don't make false accusations that I "insisted" on calling you by your first name, you long had your name displayed on your userpage, I had used your name in the past in good faith and without complaint by you. The only time I became aware that it was not kosher with you was your vexatious ANI report listed in my EEML evidence. I ask you to no longer comment on my talk page. --Martintg (talk) 19:54, 31 October 2009 (UTC)

The article Red Terror on the Amber Coast has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

documentary with no notability (no IMDB page, etc.)

While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{dated prod}} will stop the Proposed Deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. The Speedy Deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and Articles for Deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Renata (talk) 01:19, 1 November 2009 (UTC)

You are now a Reviewer

Hello. Your account has been granted the "reviewer" userright, allowing you to review other users' edits on certain flagged pages. Pending changes, also known as flagged protection, will be commencing a two-month trial at approximately 23:00, 2010 June 15 (UTC).

Reviewers can review edits made by users who are not autoconfirmed to articles placed under flagged protection. Flagged protection is applied to only a small number of articles, similarly to how semi-protection is applied but in a more controlled way for the trial.

When reviewing, edits should be accepted if they are not obvious vandalism or BLP violations, and not clearly problematic in light of the reason given for protection (see Wikipedia:Reviewing process). More detailed documentation and guidelines can be found here.

If you do not want this userright, you may ask any administrator to remove it for you at any time. Courcelles (talk) 03:11, 16 June 2010 (UTC)

Thoughts on some topics

Hi, interesting topics (Operation Pike, Operation Catherine). I just noticed as well that the article(s) on the Coup(s) of June 1940 is/are missing here on English Wikipedia. Is there a point in starting one based on the content already available? You've got any sources and willingness to expand such a subject in the near future? Miacek and his crime-fighting dog (t) 12:19, 19 September 2010 (UTC)

Well I'm currently working on User:Martintg/Visual arts in Estonia, but I'm planning on doing some work on the area you mentioned and have worked on a draft while awaiting delivery of some books I ordered. I found good source that goes into a bit of detail on the conduct of the fraudulent elections that led to incorporation of the Baltic states into the Soviet Union. It provides an analysis of the legality of the process with regard to the constitutions of the respective countries. One interesting fact I found was that at the time Estonia had a bicameral parliament, consisting of the Chamber of Deputies and the National Council. The Estonian constitution required that all legislation be passed by both chambers before becoming law. The Soviet authorities had forgotten to hold elections for the National Council and thus it was never able to pass any legislation. According to the analysis in this book: "But even apart from the illegality of the election of the Chambers of Deputies, they had no legislative power without the second Chamber, which was not re-elected and never again convened." --Martin (talk) 19:02, 19 September 2010 (UTC)

Thus, for further calculations we took the population of the USSR at the beginning of 1939 168 524.4 thousand. People in the old borders and 188 793.6 thousand. People within the borders of 1946 -1991 years. The Russian sources have always subtracted the Polish territory returned in 1945 from the population base used to compute losses. Regards--Woogie10w (talk) 11:23, 9 May 2016 (UTC)

The study by ADK is the source of the figure of the 26.6 million Soviet war dead that appears in historical literature. The ADK figures are generally accepted by historians. See pages 73-78 for the computation of the war dead, pages 50-53 for the population of the annexed regions and page 118 for the schedule of the population shifts from 1921-1959.[8]. --Woogie10w (talk) 16:31, 9 May 2016 (UTC)

Atrocities...

...trying to keep keep the discussion on track at Talk:Hans-Joachim Marseille, but from an earlier period? Strictly, of course, it is true - everything we perceive is by nature from an earlier period. But atrocities by US forces are very much an ongoing concern - it seems to be a general problem of any military that the easiest way to get your soldiers to fight is dehumanising the opposition, and soon you end up with an unbroken tradition from Wounded Knee via My Lai to Bagram torture and prisoner abuse and the Granai airstrike. --Stephan Schulz (talk) 07:50, 27 November 2016 (UTC)

As we approach the end of the year, the Military History project is looking to recognise editors who have made a real difference. Each year we do this by bestowing two awards: the Military Historian of the Year and the Military History Newcomer of the Year. Panzer Ace article mediation

Hi Nug, thanks for all your input with the article so far. As we are going nowhere, I have put in a request for an outside mediator to look at it. The request for mediation is here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Requests_for_mediation/Panzer_Ace#Issues_to_be_mediated. Cheers Deathlibrarian (talk) 02:23, 12 January 2018 (UTC)

Formal mediation has been requested

The Mediation Committee has received a request for formal mediation of the dispute relating to "Panzer Ace". As an editor concerned in this dispute, you are invited to participate in the mediation. Mediation is a voluntary process which resolves a dispute over article content by facilitation, consensus-building, and compromise among the involved editors. After reviewing the request page, the formal mediation policy, and the guide to formal mediation, please indicate in the "party agreement" section whether you agree to participate. Because requests must be responded to by the Mediation Committee within seven days, please respond to the request by 19 January 2018.

Discussion relating to the mediation request is welcome at the case talk page. Thank you.

April 2018 Milhist Backlog Drive

G'day all, please be advised that throughout April 2018 the Military history Wikiproject is running its annual backlog elimination drive. This will focus on several key areas:

  • tagging and assessing articles that fall within the project's scope
  • adding or improving listed resources on Milhist's task force pages
  • updating the open tasks template on Milhist's task force pages
  • creating articles that are listed as "requested" on the project's various lists of missing articles.

As with past Milhist drives, there are points awarded for working on articles in the targeted areas, with barnstars being awarded at the end for different levels of achievement.

The drive is open to all Wikipedians, not just members of the Military history project, although only work on articles that fall (broadly) within the scope of military history will be considered eligible. This year, the Military history project would like to extend a specific welcome to members of Wikipedia:WikiProject Women in Red, and we would like to encourage all participants to consider working on helping to improve our coverage of women in the military. This is not the sole focus of the edit-a-thon, though, and there are aspects that hopefully will appeal to pretty much everyone.

The drive starts at 00:01 UTC on 1 April and runs until 23:59 UTC on 30 April 2018. Those interested in participating can sign up here.

I have tagged the image for a standard reduction, which (for jpg/gif/png/svg files) normally happens within a day. Please check the reduced image, and make sure that the image is not excessively corrupted. Other files will be added to Category:Wikipedia non-free file size reduction requests for manual processing. There is a full seven-day period before the original oversized image will be hidden; during that time you might want to consider editing the original image yourself (perhaps an initial crop to allow a smaller reduction or none at all). A formula for calculation the desired size can be found at WP:Image resolution, along with instructions on how to tag the image in the rare cases that it requires an oversized image (typically about 0.2% of non-free uploads are tagged as necessarily oversized). Please contact the bot owner if you have any questions, or you can ask them at Wikipedia talk:Non-free content. RonBot (talk) 17:11, 16 August 2018 (UTC)

Non-free files

Hi Nug. One of the non-free content criteria that all non-free images must satisfy is WP:NFCC#9, which states that non-free content may only be used in the WP:MAINSPACE. This means non-free content cannot be used on userpages, or talk pages, etc. It appears that you only uploaded File:Estonia 1944 p861.jpg, etc. to try and help resolve a discussion at Talk:36th Estonian Police Battalion, however, non-free files cannot be used on such pages per NFCC#9 and WP:TPG#Non-free images. You can provide links to such images if they are located on some external website or you can even a link to websites corroborating what the images are supposed to verify, but you shouldn't upload non-free files to serve as some sort of reference to help you resolve a content dispute. -- Marchjuly (talk) 05:43, 17 August 2018 (UTC)

Wikiproject Military history coordinator election nominations open

Nominations for the upcoming project coordinator election are now open. A team of up to ten coordinators will be elected for the next year. The project coordinators are the designated points of contact for issues concerning the project, and are responsible for maintaining our internal structure and processes. They do not, however, have any authority over article content or editor conduct, or any other special powers. More information on being a coordinator is available here. If you are interested in running, please sign up here by 23:59 UTC on 14 September! Voting doesn't commence until 15 September. If you have any questions, you can contact any member of the coord team. Cheers, MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 00:54, 1 September 2018 (UTC)
