Misnomers in Norwegian geography stubs[edit]

Hi. Nice work on creating those Spitsbergen geography stubs. Unfortunately, you've created create a few misnomers though. You've added the geographical term before a title that already includes said term (e.g. bay(s) before bogen (which means bay) or glacier before breen (which means glacier), peninsula before flya (which means flat plain/peninsula)). I noticed you cited sources in Norwegian, so I'm guessing you're Norwegian yourself. I've seen the editors of the Norwegian Polar Institute do the same thing when translating their cruise guide pages from Norwegian to English, retaining the complete Norwegian term for a geographical feature but adding the English equivalent before it as well. It's just a little redundant to do so, so could you refrain from doing this in the future? You've done a great job on the articles, but just need to avoid doing the above. Thanks. Thank you for your comments, and for working with the Svalbard geography articles/stubs. Since I am not a native English speaker, I always appreciate input from other editors on language issues. I understand that in sentences like "He crossed the glacier Jostedalsbreen by foot" the word "glacier" may appear redundant to an informed reader. My reasoning was that one may not assume it to be common knowledge, for those familiar with English, that the Norwegian suffixes -øya=island, -breen=glacier, -elva=river and so forth. Similarly, I would prefer references to the lake Iešjávri or the mountain Jiehkkevárri, even when these clarifications are redundant for those who know Sami language. As a side note, I do not see how the term misnomer is relevant to this discussion, better terms are redundant or superfluous words. I really appreciate that you're making the effort to create articles on such varying themes. They're very interesting to read. Yes, I'm sort of back in business editing, even though I haven't yet found the time to focus for long enough to actually write much of substance, mostly just minor edits. My new place of residence is acceptable, for a while. The job's not as challenging as I'm accustomed to, so I busy myself with writing a new book. All football articles I created yesterday are already listed there. As for project tags, I will probably update talk pages after a while, if nobody else does it. Thank you for pointing at and discussing the {{lang}} template. I often leave the inclusion of {{lang}} templates to a later improvement phase of the article, especially when I am not familiar with the language in question. In my opinion, the {{lang|no}} template is useful for obvious Norwegian words or phrases, in particular words that contain any of the letters æ, ø, å. On Sami versus Norwegian names, note that for instance Lars Jakobsen Hætta is the Norwegian form of the Northern Sami: Jáhkoš-Lasse. I am also not too convinced that any literary work published in Norway before the introduction of the 1862 orthographic reform for schools should be labelled "Danish". Obvious counterexamples are "Ja, vi elsker dette landet" and "Ferdaminni fraa Sumaren 1860". Official reforms often reflect long-term common practice, while conservative publishing companies even neglect new reforms. Oceanh (talk) 00:55, 29 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I agree with regards to the Norwegian versions of Sami names. I'm not too sure that "Ja, vi elsker" (first published in 1859) is a valid example here, do we even have the 1859 lyrics? I believe the song has been changed several times over the years. As to Vinje's use of Landsmål, yes, the use of language by writers haven't followed the official reforms. Food for thought, indeed. I'm not sure what would be best blind people-wise, of course it is best to label non-English text as something else than English, but I'd say that "Ny Vise om Ole Pedersen Høilands sidste mærkelige Undvigelse fra Agerhuus Fæstning Natten til den 17de September 1839" might be closer to Danish than Norwegian. I have no strong opinion on the templates. Since the orthographic rules were identical in Norway and Denmark at the time, I would user either {{lang|no}} or {{lang|da}}, depending on the context. For a text by a Norwegian writer published in Norway primarily for the Norwegian public, I think {{lang|no}} would be the best choice, particulary for guiding the pronounciation. Certain numbers, for instance 1859 and 1859 sound clearly different in the two languages. – By the way, thanks for help with and improvement of the Akershus prisoners hook! My original comment to this was lost/hidden in an edit summary somewhere. In essence I chose to involve as little as possible, leaving the hook choice to the reviewer/promoter. The review process was slower than normal, but the outcome was satisfactory. The hook surprisingly appears to be the only Norway-related hook that currently qualifies for inclusion in the list of All-time DYK page view leaders (lower end though). My books cover only the period from 1876 to 1931 (Wiers-Jenssen + Aarseth). The period from 1876 to 1895 was rather turbulent. Then a long stable period, as Christian Michelsen chaired the board from 1895 to 1925 (except for 1903-1907, when he was a member of the parliament/government). Kvarstad vessels[edit]

Hi, I noticed you were writing on articles related to the Kvarstad vessels, I have translated the article from Swedish langugage version of Wikipedia into Norwegian and extended it on the Bokmål/Riksmål version of Wikipedia. I still do some checking of numbers of prisoners and I will try to have some maps produced, showing the sailing routes for the ships. When this is done I plan to translate the entire article into English for the English language version of Wikipedia. Your comments and help would be much appreciated! Hi! Great if you improve the English language Kvarstad artcicle with material from the Swedish version. I have been aware of the Swedish article for quite a while, and notice that you did a good job in translating/adapting this article into Norwegian. I only noticed one obvious error in the numbers, that is the sentence(s) "Lägren hade då totalt 382 besättningsmedlemmar från kvarstadsbåtarna" and "Leiren hadde da totalt 382 besetningsmedlemmer fra kvarstadbåtene", where the number 382 conflicts with other numbers given. It is correct that the cited source gives this number, but it has to be either a misprint or meant to include more. The book Andresen, Alf Pahlow (1992). I natt og tåke mot England. pp. 164–165. gives a good overview of the (number of) prisoners and what happened to them. Apart from that, I think that most of the ships should also have their own articles, as the Kvarstad article covers only a few days of their total lifespans. Hi Oceanh, I have a question that I thought you might be able to help me with. Would you say that this book, with listings and bios on all Norwegian officers in 1929, is "just" a book, or should I use the encyclopaedia template for it? It's alphabetical and all too. Cheers. Hi. I do not know this particular book. As a rule-of-thumb, I find it convenient to use the "cite encyclopedia" template if information referred to can be accessed the way we normally do in an encyclopedia: We refer to the title of an article, and the articles are strictly sorted alphabetically, so we do not need the page numbers to find the information. (If we refer to other, non-sorted, information in an encyclopedia, like the preface, background articles, errata, etc, the "cite book" template is more convenient.)
