Hello,

I received a CCI Notice from you for my latest Wiki edits. I work as the PR for a magazine and I have been editing our news onto Wikipedia, but apparently I have violated some rules by doing so. I think I was confused before as I thought if I completely cited our website as well as directly linking the exact news article I posted information from would suffice as a proper citation. I have re-edited my earlier posts, in hopes of editing the Wiki pages in an appropriate manner. From this point on, if I were to refer to our news articles as a source of information and re-write our news in a Wiki edit, would it be possible to have this CCI Notice revoked? I apologize for still being unfamiliar with all the editing rules on Wikipedia and violating these rules, but now that I am fully aware of my errors, I would greatly appreciate it if I could be forgiven for my errors and given another chance to properly contribute to the Wiki pages.Ohhellomai (talk) 09:21, 19 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I have withdrawn the request. That is not to say that everything is alright now. Let me try to explain what the problem is: When someone writes a text, that text becomes the intellectual property of that person. When that person puts said text on a website, he or she still owns that text, even if it's there for everyone to read. If now someone else comes and copies that text (or part of it) onto Wikipedia, that person is violating the author's copyright, i.e. breaking the law. Worse, that person is causing Wikipedia to break the law also, because Wikipedia becomes a distributor of the text copied onto it. Obviously, we cannot allow that. Citing the source, as you are apparently always doing, is unfortunately not enough. The source text needs to be paraphrased or (where appropriate) quoted. Alternatively, if you are in possession of the material's copyright, you can grant appropriate permissions. WP:IOWN explains how to do that. Either of these options will have to be taken for each of your text contributions for which that has not yet happened (of course excluding contributions not in violation of any copyright). In addition to fixing these problems with your past contributions, I strongly suggest you read WP:COI (in particular the section WP:COS) as well as refraining from adding more content from your magazine to Wikipedia until this has been sorted out.
