Warning about user page
[edit]I would counsel you to make your user page less of an advertisement, otherwise it is liable to be labelled with Template:Db-advert and speedily deleted. The user page exists to make collaboration among Wikipedians easier, not for self-promotion. It is fine to disclose your interests outside Wikipedia on a user page, to mention your business and to provide contact details, but the current text goes well beyond that. Hope this helps, Fayenatic london (talk) 12:25, 16 July 2007 (UTC)
Help with Swarovski edits and Beads edits
[edit]Fayenatic: I obviously don't understand all the rules regarding posting of content in spite of reading some of the terms. In the post for "Swarovski", I had posted an external link to a pdf from Swarovski via my Swarovski distributor that listed birthstone colors; a second link had Swarovski pearl colors. The pdf did have our old company address. The post for "Swarovski" was edited to remove these links and substitute links that don't contain the same information. The post for "Beads" has a link http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beads "Bead Facts/Charts Handy charts from Bead World" that links directly to branded webpages of Bead World. Links to the same branded webpages are found in the external links for seed beads at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seed_bead, with a second link to a merchant site to http://members.cox.net/sdsantan/measure.html that gives attribution to three additional merchants in the same category of merchandise.
Can you help me to understand the differences as applied to my edits?

- What Fayenatic meant was not your edits to any articles, but your user page, which I have deleted because it was an advertisement. Advertisements are not allowed on Wikipedia; please see WP:NOT#SOAP. Thanks, Sandstein 06:00, 4 August 2007 (UTC)
- No, you were right, Paul, I also removed external links (including your edits) from this version of Swarovski and other pages. This was because they did not contribute significant further understanding to the subject of the article, namely Swarovski. Wikipedia has developed many robust policies; please refer to the one on external links.
- In contrast, I am inclined to leave the links you mentioned because those specific pages are relevant, informative, and do not prominently promote the companies, even if they are part of corporate websites. (I have no connection with Bead World or the other merchants on those sites.)
- In the case of your edits to Swarovski, you also added lengthy info that was not relevant to the article. You might want to contribute some of it instead to the article Birthday#Birthstones. As for the PDF, it did not mention Swarovski, but only your company; it was also rather a large download (800 KB) for the apparently simple content - remember some readers still use dialup!
- I hope this helps. If you have any further questions, please feel free to post them here as I will watch this page. - Fayenatic london (talk) 11:17, 4 August 2007 (UTC)
I would have to disagree with you about the information posted at the Bead World site.
The Bead World footer contains a copyright notice on images and content to Bead World. The Bead World page also contains a phone number to call for price updates. To me, that is advertising.
Also, a good portion of the content on the linked page under Glass Surfaces and Finishes is a repeat of the section Colors and Finishes that I inserted into the wikipedia article (before following the Bead World link).
Can I get more clarification, then?
Re: Swarovski edits, birthstone color crystals are a major component of the business of Swarovski's Crystal Components Division. That was my original reason for including it there rather than with Birthstone article. But I can live with your direction Ohiobeadsandgems 16:39, 4 August 2007 (UTC).
- Although there is some overlap between the Bead World page and the Colours and Finishes section that you added to Seed bead, there is further info on the Bead World page which appears useful enough for the link to be retained.
- Yes, naturally Bead World advertise on their own site, but not on Wikipedia itself. The page to which Wikipedia links is mainly information rather than mainly advertising.
- I think your revised user page is now fine, well done! - Fayenatic london (talk) 21:45, 4 August 2007 (UTC)
