Recent Changes Patrol

[edit]

Welcome, Oleaster, and thanks for your efforts at RC Patrol! I noticed that you are manually Undoing bad edits which presents two problems 1) it's tedious and 2) using the Undo function only reverts the very last edit, so that if the vandal left two or more consecutive edits the others will remain.

I suggest that to get started with RC Patrol, get an anti-vandal tool here. My personal favorite is the User:Lupin/Anti-vandal tool, a powerful tool which shows recent IP edits in a feed. Also, in your Preferences page, enable "Twinkle" under your Gadgets. Twinkle will allow you to quickly leave the vandal a warning and to report repeat offenders.

If you need any help, do not hesitate to contact me.- Gilliam (talk) 15:33, 24 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the tips. Thusfar I've been manually checking the vandals' contributions to see if they made multiple edits to the articles, which should catch most of it, though I image I missed a few. I've wanted to pick up Twinkle, but it seems I'll have to wait until I'm autoconfirmed to use it :). I'll be taking a look at Lupin's tool; so far I've been using Vandal Fighter, which has been a huge help. Happy editing. Oleaster (talk·contribs) 15:41, 24 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I'm sorry, but I'm having some difficulty parsing your message. What do you mean when you say that CHRIUZ is BENDWEGN? Oleaster (talk·contribs) 21:38, 24 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

On Kazakh lang entry

[edit]

Hey, Oleaster,

I've removed the entry in question simply because of its factual incorrectness. Being a native Kazakh speaker, I can attest to the inaccuracy of that entry. My inexperience with editing Wiki-articles prevented me from expounding upon my rationale for removal. As the entry lacked any adequate sources, and clearly contradicted my practical knowledge of the language, I thought it best to delete it, lest it import erroneous information to the reader unacquainted with Kazakh. As I don't have any grammar books currently at hand, being in the UK and all, I can't redraft it. However, being ignorant is better than being misinformed, so I'd kindly ask you to restore my edit. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 138.251.235.195 (talk) 16:53, 26 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

You're quite welcome to remove the information yourself if you feel it's inaccurate. Because articles on Wikipedia are commonly vandalized by people removing information without a good reason, it's not always easy to tell the difference between legitimate deletions and vandalism. Providing an accurate edit summary can help to prevent misunderstandings in the future. Sorry for the inconvenience. Oleaster (talk·contribs) 17:04, 26 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for your response. I fully sympathize with your reasoning and you haven't inconvenienced me at all! — Preceding unsigned comment added by 138.251.235.195 (talk) 17:41, 26 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

October 2014

[edit]

Information icon Hello Oleaster. Thanks for patrolling new pages – it's a very important task! I'm just letting you know, however, that you shouldn't tag pages as lacking context (CSD A1), or content (CSD A3), moments after they are created. It's best to wait at least 10–15 minutes for more content to be added if the page is very short, and the articles should not be marked as patrolled. Tagging such pages in a very short space of time may drive away well-meaning contributors, which is not good for Wikipedia. Attack pages (G10), blatant nonsense (G1), copyright violations (G12) and pure vandalism/blatant hoaxes (G3) should of course be tagged and deleted immediately. Thanks. KJ Discuss? 01:31, 28 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

The template states that pages nominated under CSD A1 or A3 should definitely not be tagged as patrolled, but WP:NPPLOG, which it links to, states that they should. I find that to be somewhat confusing, but I'll refrain from marking these pages as patrolled for now. As for the timing, are there any nominations that you object to, specifically? The policy urges caution, and I may well have been too eager, but I can't think of a page I tagged that could plausibly have turned into something not covered under CSD. Anyway, I'll exercise more caution from now on. Oleaster (talk·contribs) 01:53, 28 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Just a note that you shouldn't be too hasty in tagging pages for speedy deletion. WP:NPPNICE holds that speedy deletion tags should be added 10 to 15 minutes after the article is created. Regards. KJ Discuss? 02:05, 28 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, thanks. And so much for caution; I just tagged Johnson Mansion erroneously :| Oleaster (talk·contribs) 02:07, 28 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Seeing you around.

[edit]

I'm also relatively new to Wikipedia, but I've been noticing you around a lot, I don't believe you're in the IRC (#cvn-wp-en connect) but I notice you reverting vandalism a lot, that channel might help you do that a lot (it certainly has helped me). ----I am Kethrus Talk to me! 23:16, 28 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the tip. I'll be sure to try it out. I see you've been pretty busy lately; keep up the good work! Oleaster (talk·contribs) 23:48, 28 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for cleaning up the warnings. I would have left the appropriate one but you got to his talk page before me and I didn't want to double warn him. Meters (talk) 01:14, 29 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

FYI A7 specifically doesn't apply to software (something I've always found a little odd, but which is nonetheless the case). --— Rhododendrites talk \\ 00:12, 30 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

WTF?

[edit]

Who are you--someone who has been around nine days and who barely speaks English--to be deleting others' contributions? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 134.71.214.11 (talk) 03:06, 30 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Are you referring to any contribution in specific? The only edit from your IP that I reverted was this comment in Eden Sher's article. Oleaster (talk·contribs) 09:07, 30 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
@Oleaster: It seems clear the user in question (134.71.214.11) believes comments like "She is super Jewy" are appropriate for Wikipedia. I honestly wouldn't give a vandal the time of day by responding to their comments when they're being rude. --I am Kethrus Talk to me! 20:32, 4 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page.
