Teahouse talkback: you've got messages!

Hello, Pakoire/Archive 1. Your question has been answered at the Teahouse Q&A board. Feel free to reply there!
Please note that all old questions are archived after 2-3 days of inactivity. Message added by DES (talk)DESiegel Contribs 21:21, 4 December 2019 (UTC). (You can remove this notice at any time by removing the {{teahouse talkback}} template).

Example of citation improvement

Please note this edit to Draft:Pacific Underground, in which I changed the URL to go directly to the actual article/story cited, changed the name of the news source to its full name, and wiki-linked that name. Cites to online sources should always go to the actual source, and if there is no URL that goes to the actual source, no URL at all should be included. the name of the work may be linked IF there is a Wikipedia articel about the source, as there often is for major news sources. I hope this is helpful. DES (talk)DESiegel Contribs 22:07, 4 December 2019 (UTC)

Additional citsation issues in Draft:Pacific Underground

In Draft:Pacific Underground, a few citation issues:

  • The citation to Floating Islanders
    • The main URL should not go to a worldcat page, only to an actualk online copy of the book, if one is available. A url parameter is not required. Using |oclc= includes a worldcat link that lets peopel find the book in a library and see othetr info from worldcat/OCLC.
    • 69–106 is a very wide page range. If thsi is because the curent 5 cites to that book are to different pages, the solution is to remove the page number from the {{cite book}} and instead follow each cite with a use of {{rp}}. RP takes a parameter which is the page numbrer or range foir the specific citation.
  • Performing Aotearoa Similarly do not use a worldcat site as the main URL. If there is a url that goes directly to page 338 (perhaps a Google books page) use it. If not, omit url= and use oclc= instead (or in adition iof the is a useful url).
  • Elsewhere Please do not put the title of an articel or story in all caps, even if the publication does so. Use title case always (inital caps on all but minor words like "of").
  • Please pick a date format for publication dates ans use it consistantly. It can be YYYY-MM-DD, or DD Month YYYY or Month DD, YYYY, but the article should be consistant, even if the sources are not. See MOS:DATE and MOS:DATEUNIFY for details.
  • Please do not put ref tags in section titels -- it messes up links to sections. In stead put them in the body of the section, repeated as needed using a ref name.
  • The parameter |website= (or |work= should be the name of the web site or publication, not its domain unless it has no other name.

I hope these are helpful. DES (talk)DESiegel Contribs 22:58, 4 December 2019 (UTC)

Yes thanks DESiegel - all good to know - better to get it right! Pakoire (talk) 05:32, 5 December 2019 (UTC)

It seems i was not clear about how to sue {{rp}}. Please see these edits for an example. DES (talk)DESiegel Contribs 05:40, 9 December 2019 (UTC)

Wellington Meetup

Kia ora Pakoire,

The Wellington Meetup has experienced editors that attend and will be happy to help you. The timetable for the next few meetups can be found on the meetup page here: Wikipedia:Meetup/Wellington Our meetup group decided to have a break over the Christmas period as a lot of us are going away. However - come along to the next meetup due on the 18 January and we be pleased to help out and answer your questions. Einebillion (talk) 21:43, 16 December 2019 (UTC)

Thanks Einebillion. Yes I went to a meet-up a few weeks back and I was going to go to the next one but there was notification of it so I thought it wasn't on. I wasn't sure who or how to ask about it. It will come in January. I am creating articles now while I have time and I am not sure if it best to just list them or to ask for an experienced editor to approve. I now have two that are pending approval. One got rejected and it has been rectified but I am not sure if it will get looked at again. Pakoire (talk) 19:41, 17 December 2019 (UTC)

Disambiguation link notification for January 15

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited Jolene Douglas, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Ngāti Maru (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)

Message on my talk page

Hi Pakoire, thanks for your message on my talk page. The Wellington meetup is where you'll find some editors but I also note that your talk page has comments from other New Zealand editors. My advice is to leave messages on pages of more active editors than me but still come along to the meet up when you can. See you soon. Einebillion (talk) 22:22, 17 January 2020 (UTC)

Women in Red

Hi there, Pakoire, and welcome to Women in Red. It's good to have one more contributor from New Zealand interested in covering Maori women. I see you are making good progress and have already created several articles including a biography. Even so, you might find it useful to look through our Ten Simple Rules. Please let me know if you run into any difficulties or need assistance. Happy editing!--Ipigott (talk) 11:11, 18 January 2020 (UTC)

Circa Theatre

Fell down a hole of:

  • taking a photo for Commons of the Circa Theatre
  • finding there was no Wikidata item for Circa
  • realising there are two things: a theatre building and a theatre company
  • created an item for the building
  • now wondering how to create an item for the theatre company, but there doesn't seem to be one because it's a kind of collective
  • wondering if you would like to collaborate!

Quilt Phase (talk) 08:05, 22 April 2020 (UTC)

Yes - I can make an article on the company and you do the building and I will add to it. I think I have the Circa book somewhere. Pakoire (talk) 09:02, 22 April 2020 (UTC)

Or maybe it is best to do one for the company and have a section about the building. It can be split another time if appropriate. I can draft and post a link. Pakoire (talk) 09:05, 22 April 2020 (UTC)

Have made items for Circa Theatre the building and the theatrical troupe / theatre company Quilt Phase (talk) 01:46, 3 May 2020 (UTC)

I have created a draft. Needs a bit more work but maybe you could move the images into better locations and link the wiki data item? Draft/Circa Theatre Pakoire (talk) 06:02, 3 May 2020 (UTC)

Help me!

Please help me with... - ready to move Draft:Jools Topp and Draft:Lynda Topp to mainspace as articles. But there is some sort of redirect perhaps on these titles that goes to the Topp Twins article. Not sure how to solve this. For context the Topp Twins is the name of a music and comedy group that is made up of two twin sisters Jools and Lynda Topp. Pakoire (talk) 23:05, 17 June 2020 (UTC) Pakoire (talk) 23:05, 17 June 2020 (UTC)

What is your basis for asserting individual notability separately from the Topp Twins? At a first glance, both drafts appear to duplicate existing material or each other and, at most, have a few things that could expand the Topp Twins article. — jmcgnh(talk) (contribs) 23:34, 17 June 2020 (UTC)
If you refer to the Topp Twins talk page you will see some discussion there, and I would request if you still have questions you could use that forum for discussion. If you know any examples of notable twins and how that is presented in Wikipedia I would appreciate it Pakoire (talk) 23:55, 17 June 2020 (UTC)
You are the one who chose this page for the discussion.
Anyway, the way to have the moves take place over the redirects is to follow the instructions at WP:requested moves with a pointer to the existing discussion that explains why the moves, while potentially controversial (see my immediate reaction above), are appropriate. Another alternative is to go through AFC, but that seems like unnecessary extra process. — jmcgnh(talk) (contribs) 01:18, 18 June 2020 (UTC)
Thanks - yes I did not realise I would be starting a discussion on my talk page! I was surprised when the help thing I clicked ended up on here. Sorry if I sounded rude.Pakoire (talk) 02:15, 18 June 2020 (UTC)

A lengthy welcome

Hi Pakoire. Welcome to Wikipedia. I hope you don't mind if I share some of my thoughts on starting out as a new editor on Wikipedia: If I could get editors in your situation to follow just one piece of advice, it would be this: Learn Wikipedia by working only on non-contentious topics until you have a feel for the normal editing process and the policies that usually come up when editing casually. You'll find editing to be fun, easy, and rewarding. The rare disputes are resolved quickly and easily.

Working on biographical information about living persons is far more difficult. Wikipedia's Biographies of living persons policy requires strict adherence to multiple content policies, and applies to all information about living persons including talk pages.

If you have a relationship with the topics you want to edit, then you will need to review Wikipedia's Conflict of interest policy, which may require you to disclose your relationship and restrict your editing depending upon how you are affiliated with the subject matter. Regardless, editing in a manner that promotes an entity or viewpoint over others can appear to be detrimental to the purpose of Wikipedia and the neutrality required in articles.

Some topic areas within Wikipedia have special editing restrictions that apply to all editors. It's best to avoid these topics until you are extremely familiar with all relevant policies and guidelines.

If you work from reliable, independent sources, you shouldn't go far wrong. WP:RSP and WP:RSN are helpful in determining if a source is reliable.

I hope you find some useful information in all this, and welcome again. --Hipal/Ronz (talk) 21:35, 22 June 2020 (UTC)

Were you interested in coming to the wikidata / open refine workshop that I'm organising? I'm not totally sure it would be your thing as it's very much wikidata rather than wikipedia. Let me know though. The date we're settling on is 25 July. Einebillion (talk) 08:56, 24 June 2020 (UTC)
