File permission problem with File:2001 A Human Oddity, David Reekie, Jan 2001.jpg

Thanks for uploading File:2001 A Human Oddity, David Reekie, Jan 2001.jpg. I noticed that while you provided a valid copyright licensing tag, there is no proof that the creator of the file agreed to license it under the given license.

If you created this media entirely yourself but have previously published it elsewhere (especially online), please either

  • make a note permitting reuse under the CC-BY-SA or another acceptable free license (see this list) at the site of the original publication; or
  • Send an email from an address associated with the original publication to permissions-en@wikimedia.org, stating your ownership of the material and your intention to publish it under a free license. You can find a sample permission letter here. If you take this step, add {{OTRS pending}} to the file description page to prevent premature deletion.

If you did not create it entirely yourself, please ask the person who created the file to take one of the two steps listed above, or if the owner of the file has already given their permission to you via email, please forward that email to permissions-en@wikimedia.org.

If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:File copyright tags#Fair use, and add a rationale justifying the file's use on the article or articles where it is included. See Wikipedia:File copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have provided evidence that their copyright owners have agreed to license their works under the tags you supplied, too. You can find a list of files you have created in your upload log. Files lacking evidence of permission may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. You may wish to read the Wikipedia's image use policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Kelly hi! 22:06, 25 January 2012 (UTC)

February 2012

Please do not add inappropriate external links to Wikipedia, as you did to Etta James. Wikipedia is not a collection of links, nor should it be used for advertising or promotion. Inappropriate links include (but are not limited to) links to personal web sites, links to web sites with which you are affiliated, and links that attract visitors to a web site or promote a product. See the external links guideline and spam guideline for further explanations. Because Wikipedia uses the nofollow attribute value, its external links are disregarded by most search engines. If you feel the link should be added to the article, please discuss it on the article's talk page rather than re-adding it. Thank you. McGeddon (talk) 12:36, 8 February 2012 (UTC)

Promoting Colin Larkin and his btoe.com website

Hello Pamela Gardiner. We welcome your contributions to Wikipedia, but if you are affiliated with some of the people, places or things you have written about on Wikipedia, you may have a conflict of interest or close connection to the subject.

All editors are required to comply with Wikipedia's neutral point of view content policy. People who are very close to a subject often have a distorted view of it, which may cause them to inadvertently edit in ways that make the article either too flattering or too disparaging. People with a close connection to a subject are not absolutely prohibited from editing about that subject, but they need to be especially careful about following the reliable sources and writing with as little bias as possible.

If you are very close to a subject, here are some ways you can reduce the risk of problems:

  • Avoid or exercise great caution when editing or creating articles related to you, your organization, or its competitors, as well as projects and products they are involved with.
  • Be cautious about deletion discussions. Everyone is welcome to provide information about independent sources in deletion discussions, but avoid advocating for deletion of articles about your competitors.
  • Avoid linking to the Wikipedia article or website of your organization in other articles (see Wikipedia:Spam).
  • Exercise great caution so that you do not accidentally breach Wikipedia's content policies.

Please familiarize yourself with relevant content policies and guidelines, especially those pertaining to neutral point of view, verifiability of information, and autobiographies.

For information on how to contribute to Wikipedia when you have a conflict of interest, please see our frequently asked questions for organizations. Thank you.--McGeddon (talk) 12:36, 8 February 2012 (UTC)

Your name has been mentioned in connection with a sockpuppetry case. Please refer to Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/Pamela Gardiner for evidence. Request reason:

From what I can gather I am being linked to someone called Arthur or George? I can assure you I am not Arthur or George or whatever his name is. I have just got in from a week at work (I am a female full-time school teacher and cannot edit wikipedia during the day because you cannot access wikipedia from a school site), I do so in the evenings after work for fun. So I definitely havent been editing wikipedia today or yesterday. I have been writing and editing biographical articles on wikipedia for several years and have created several biographical articles. One of these is for the music editor Colin Larkin (which I created in 2008) I have recently been adding internal links to his page about both his recently launched website and a published notable source, the All Time Top 1000 Albums, which I created the page for a few months ago. Because I believe the power of wikipedia is in the wealth of its internal connections I have been linking that book to the bands listed and ranked in it. But I don't know anyone called Arthur and I have not been doing something I would call 'promoting' (this book has been in print for several years under editions). If any of my links have been regarded as misplaced, I have talked reasonably on the discussion page and taken advice. There are other people who use wikipedia from this IP address because I have adult children, but I dont think any of them is registered as Arthur! I will naturally comply with any wikipedia guidelines and have no idea why I have been blocked because as far as I am concerned I have added several worthwhile neutral point of view biographical articles on wikipedia. And I havent been on the site for over a week, possibly two, cant exactly remember.

Decline reason:

Let's see. On November 13, User:GeorgeB3 edited Colin Larkin (writer) at 16:47. Nine minutes later, from the same computer, you edited the same article. Are you sure you have no idea who GeorgeB3 might be --jpgordon::==( o ) 22:33, 10 February 2012 (UTC)

Request reason:

Apologies. I do now know who GeorgeB3 and MelanieB2 are, these are the log ins of my adult kids who use this IP address. I wasn't aware having three people log in from the same IP was against wiki rules, but we will accept the block if that is the case and learn from the experience. I still have no idea at all who all these Arthurs are, they are not me or anyone who uses this IP address. Pamela Gardiner (talk) 08:38, 11 February 2012 (UTC)

Decline reason:

"My kids did it" ... well, I knew we would see that one eventually. There is no problem with multiple users on the same address. There is a major problem when they seem to be making the same exact edits, whether they're actually different people or not. — Daniel Case (talk) 18:42, 11 February 2012 (UTC)

btoe.com blacklist

Good to see you've been following my conversation with Mr Larkin. Yes, I submitted btoe.com to the spam blacklist after manually clearing up around forty articles where your children (?) had used the site as an inappropriate reference. (The aggregated opinion of one small pool of anonymous internet voters is not reliable enough to say "X is the best known work of writer Y", and it seems unlikely that we would ever want to write about any individual poll results in context.) I explained the reasoning at MediaWiki talk:Spam-blacklist, which you seem to have found by yourself.

If you're concerned about the blacklisting, all you have to do is follow the instructions at MediaWiki talk:Spam-blacklist#Proposed removals and "show where the link can be useful on Wikipedia". There may be some merit in whitelisting the main page of btoe.com, for linking from Colin Larkin's biography article, while keeping the rest blacklisted. --McGeddon (talk) 15:49, 5 March 2012 (UTC)

The sites you list are, glancing at them, services that aggregate the overall scores of published reviews for something. Btoe.com aggregates the overall scores of some anonymous internet users' opinions. This is meaningless as a source for an encyclopedia as it is WP:NOTRELIABLE (I assume Larkin's "editorial control" is merely moderating against joke answers and blatant vote-stuffing, rather than extensively manipulating the outcomes of polls) and unambiguously WP:USERGENERATED.
Virtually all of the "in 2011, Robert de Niro was voted the best actor on earth" type edits that you and your family added to Wikipedia could be overruled at any time with a handful of extra votes. I would only require a dozen volunteers from a Steve Martin fan site (or ten minutes with a proxy IP server) to put Martin above de Niro as "the best actor on earth" on btoe.com. There is no way that Wikipedia could regard the outcome of a btoe.com poll as a reliable source for any statement. --McGeddon (talk) 09:29, 10 March 2012 (UTC)

Hi! I'm serving as the wikipedian-in-residence at the Smithsonian Institution Archives until June! One of my goals as resident, is to work with Wikipedians and staff to improve content on Wikipedia about people who have collections held in the Archives - most of these are scientists who held roles within the Smithsonian and/or federal government. I thought you might like to participate since you are interested in the sciences! Sign up to participate here and dive into articles needing expansion and creation on our to-do list. Feel free to make a request for images or materials at the request page, and of course, if you share your successes at the outcomes page you will receive the SIA barnstar!
