Technical news

  • Wikimedia previously used the IRC network Freenode. However, due to changes over who controlled the network with reports of a forceful takeover by several ex-staff members, the Wikimedia IRC Group Contacts decided to move to the new Libera Chat network. It has been reported that Wikimedia related channels on Freenode have been forcibly taken over if they pointed members to Libera. There is a migration guide and Wikimedia discussions about this.

Retrieving of Sean Crex

I have noticed a deletion of my page, for I do not know the main reason why Sean Crex (talk) 09:45, 24 June 2021 (UTC)

Hi, Sean Crex! Using Wikipedia as a web host isn’t allowed. Please have a read of the aforementioned guideline, and feel free to make a new user page in line with our policies and guidelines! Best, Patient Zerotalk 16:35, 24 June 2021 (UTC)

Reaching a consensus regarding factual edits about Mellow 94.7

Hi Patient Zero,

I would like to request for a consensus regarding some of the edits being done by some of the editors for Mellow 94.7. At the end of the day, all we want are facts and verifiable information being published on Wikipedia. Thank you. 216.154.32.173 (talk) 01:45, 1 July 2021 (UTC)

Hi - I can see that there's a clear dispute over the content on DWLL, so at this stage I'm going to recommend that you post on the article's talk page. Pinging Superastig here too, as I can see that he has reverted a few of your edits. Particularly, IP, what I'd like you to be mindful of is WP:UNSOURCED - which states that all content added to Wikipedia must be verifiable. The onus is on you, the editor that added the information, to find a reliable source - and I can't see any attempts on your part to do this thus far. Best, Patient Zerotalk 02:03, 1 July 2021 (UTC)

Administrators' newsletter – July 2021

News and updates for administrators from the past month (June 2021).

Guideline and policy news

  • Consensus has been reached to delete all books in the book namespace. There was rough consensus that the deleted books should still be available on request at WP:REFUND even after the namespace is removed.
  • An RfC is open to discuss the next steps following a trial which automatically applied pending changes to TFAs.

Technical news

  • IP addresses of unregistered users are to be hidden from everyone. There is a rough draft of how IP addresses may be shown to users who need to see them. This currently details allowing administrators, checkusers, stewards and those with a new usergroup to view the full IP address of unregistered users. Editors with at least 500 edits and an account over a year old will be able to see all but the end of the IP address in the proposal. The ability to see the IP addresses hidden behind the mask would be dependent on agreeing to not share the parts of the IP address they can see with those who do not have access to the same information. Accessing part of or the full IP address of a masked editor would also be logged. Comments on the draft are being welcomed at the talk page.

Non-consensual condom removal page

Per the sources, your reverting is incorrect. You also restored grammar mistakes. So I reverted. I'm not removing any content. I'm reverting inaccurate information. Please revert yourself. I don't feel like reporting this. 103.77.192.228 (talk) 23:48, 5 July 2021 (UTC)

Consensus seems in favour of using gender-neutral pronouns in the article, per MOS:GENDER - both men and women can partake in the act (also, bear in mind not every individual assigned male at birth will use "he", "him" and "his" pronouns). Feel free to take it to the article's talk page, but this is something that gets reverted by experienced editors often (and I won't be reverting you further; in addition to this I can see evidence of your IP-hopping in order to reinstate male pronouns). Patient Zerotalk 23:52, 5 July 2021 (UTC)
You're wrong. This isn't about pronouns. It's about facts.[1] You say that "Consensus seems in favour of using gender-neutral pronouns in the article", but that is false. There is no consensus for your changes that comply with WP:CONSENSUS. I returned the page to the WP:STATUSQUO, which used to be supported by a hidden note in the introduction. WP:CONSENSUS doesn't override WP:VERIFIABILITY anyway. See the talk page. Also, there is no intentional IP hopping. My IP changed. That's it. 103.77.192.228 (talk) 00:34, 6 July 2021 (UTC)
Discussion moved to the article's talk page. IP, this is what's known as tendentious editing. In other words, you are not adhering to a neutral point of view, instead using Wikipedia and its articles as a way of pushing a particular viewpoint that is no longer compatible with societal norms. The article adheres to MOS:GENDER and should continue to do so. Patient Zerotalk 01:25, 6 July 2021 (UTC)
It is not tendentious editing to stay on course with the sources. What you say about WP:NPOV is also false since it tells us that Wikipedia neutrality is based on what the preponderance of reliable sources say. You have no sources showing that women commit this crime. You're also wrong about MOS:GENDER. It is you pushing a gender-neutral POV where there isn't one. You're only acting this way because I'm an IP. Experienced editors have literally done what I've done at that page and you're making me into a villain. This will go to dispute resolution now, I guess. 103.77.192.235 (talk) 01:55, 6 July 2021 (UTC)
What societal norms is the IP allegedly no longer in compliance with? Keep in mind that Wikipedia is not to be on the cutting edge of activist efforts to change societal norms, or to switch over to ones that have not fully taken hold, per WP:NOTADVOCACY and WP:RGW. Additionally, the Wikipedia community is clear about describing sexed anatomy here. Even anatomy aside, the sources speak of men doing that behavior. Is speaking of, say, women in an article specifically about women a violation of MOS:GENDER? The sources on that topic are clear, and enforcing gender neutrality where the sources do not support it when describing a form of male misconduct is an example of WP:FALSEBALANCE. Crossroads -talk- 04:50, 6 July 2021 (UTC)

July corner

On DYK today, two songs, a morning song that a cousin gave to me, about the many meanings of rising, and the other praying for the courage to take the necessary steps. The morning song is a GA, - I should write more given my initials, but I also want to care for articles of those who recently died (now Esther Béjarano). - Thank you for improving articles in July, - I come a few days earlier than normally because the bloom is fading already ;) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 18:55, 16 July 2021 (UTC)

Thank you very much, Gerda! Hope you’re doing well? Patient Zerotalk 19:48, 19 July 2021 (UTC)
On Wikipedia, doing mostly well. Healthy in real life, but knowing too many who aren't, and some here as well, and missing those who died or just gave up, - so: mixed. More on my talk, see Flood and around. How about you. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 19:51, 19 July 2021 (UTC)
Goodness me, I hope the floods haven’t affected where you are too badly, Gerda? Glad to hear you’re well, though. I’m feeling very much the same, and echo your thoughts especially now that two editors I saw frequently around here when I was a younger editor have passed… otherwise not doing too bad. We’ve had some lovely weather here over the past few days and so I’ve mainly spent them outside or trying to figure out how to keep the house cool (being in the UK we don’t have AC, and it’s been bloody boiling!). Take care, Patient Zerotalk 01:10, 20 July 2021 (UTC)
Thank you, and sorry I missed to link Flood (video). Where I live - walking distance to the spring of the creek in the valley - flooding is unlikely, and - still close - on the Rhine, yes it was high (see 15 July pic here), but not as high as almost every spring when the road is flooded and cars make a detour. Keep cool ;) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 07:10, 20 July 2021 (UTC)
That’s alright! Glad to hear all is well where you are, Gerda :-) I know exactly what you mean re. cars making detours - we occasionally get bad floods over here too, in fact a car park near me has a road sign to warn people that it is liable to flooding as it’s quite low down! Will do ;-) Patient Zerotalk 21:46, 20 July 2021 (UTC)

CPI Aerostructures

I am trying to get CPI Aero to pay for material they bought from me 6 months ago on open account terms. They will not return my calls or issue payment. By removing my post, you are preventing me from encouraging them to pay me what they owe me. We are a very small business and they have essentially stolen from us to line their own pockets. Please reconsider posting my statement again. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 142.147.87.49 (talkcontribs)

I'm sorry to hear about your experiences with the company in question. However, the Wikipedia article on CPI Aerostructures is not the place to air your grievances; this would constitute disruptive editing. Hope you are able to resolve your issues through a more appropriate channel. Patient Zerotalk 23:57, 21 July 2021 (UTC)

Chris Jeday name edit

Good afternoon, I tried fixing Chris Jeday Wikipedia article to reflect his real artist name (Chris Jedi), but the change was auto reverted. The Spanish article already reflects the changes but the English one does not. Thanks in advance. Geotronico (talk) 23:52, 21 July 2021 (UTC)

Evening, Geotronico! I had a quick Google, and the only instance I can find of him using the name "Jedi" is on his Instagram, and that ought to be taken with a pinch of salt given that people often do go by "pun" versions of their names on that website. If you're able to find a reliable source showing that this is a new stage name, or that he has legally changed his surname, feel free to add it to the article. If you have any further questions, please don't hesitate to ask! Patient Zerotalk 23:56, 21 July 2021 (UTC)

Bias

I do not believe my edit was not constructive. Wikipedia has been known to have leftist bias. I think you are biased and require immediate termination. Please do not imply political bias when making edits. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Akaseahawks68 (talkcontribs)

I think you are biased and require immediate termination -- This reads like a threat to me. I strongly suggest you retract this statement. Your edit introduced opinion into the article and did not cite a reliable source. --Chris | Crazycomputers (talk) 22:24, 22 July 2021 (UTC)
Thank you for attending to this, Chris - you're spot on. Akaseahawks68, here at Wikipedia we cannot be politically biased when editing as this contradicts our policy on maintaining a neutral point of view. You state Please do not imply political bias when making edits, yet you did so with your edit. I second Chris' comment that you should retract your statement, also. New Page Patrol newsletter September 2021

New Page Review queue September 2021

Hello Patient Zero,

Please join this discussion - there is increase in the abuse of Wikipedia and its processes by POV pushers, Paid Editors, and by holders of various user rights including Autopatrolled. Even our review systems themselves at AfC and NPR have been infiltrated. The good news is that detection is improving, but the downside is that it creates the need for a huge clean up - which of course adds to backlogs.

Copyright violations are also a serious issue. Most non-regular contributors do not understand why, and most of our Reviewers are not experts on copyright law - and can't be expected to be, but there is excellent, easy-to-follow advice on COPYVIO detection here.

At the time of the last newsletter (#25, December 2020) the backlog was only just over 2,000 articles. New Page Review is an official system. It's the only firewall against the inclusion of new, improper pages.

There are currently 706 New Page Reviewers plus a further 1,080 admins, but as much as nearly 90% of the patrolling is still being done by around only the 20 or so most regular patrollers.

If you are no longer very active on Wikipedia or you no longer wish to be part of the New Page Reviewer user group, please consider asking any admin to remove you from the list. This will enable NPP to have a better overview of its performance and what improvements need to be made to the process or its software.

Various awards are due to be allocated by the end of the year and barnstars are overdue. If you would like to manage this, please let us know. Indeed, if you are interested in coordinating NPR, it does not involve much time and the tasks are described here.

A belated thanks

I'm stopping by to express my appreciation for your trust and support in my July RfA. My first few months have been eye opening. My experience may not be the same as others' but I feel more a peacekeeper than a patrolman. Certainly have been reading a lot of policy pages more closely. I don't want to act less than competently, but I can see how much I don't know and it daunts me a bit. The very kind words you offered in my admin request made me feel responsible for maintaining trust. If I can be of service or if you see me out of service, please call on me directly. Thanks again. WP:AFC Helper News

Hello! I wanted to drop a quick note for all of our AFC participants; nothing huge and fancy like a newsletter, but a few points of interest.

  • AFCH will now show live previews of the comment to be left on a decline.
  • The template {{db-afc-move}} has been created - this template is similar to {{db-move}} when there is a redirect in the way of an acceptance, but specifically tells the patrolling admin to let you (the draft reviewer) take care of the actual move.

Short and sweet, but there's always more to discuss at WT:AFC. Stop on by, maybe review a draft on the way? Whether you're one of our top reviewers, or haven't reviewed in a while, I want to thank you for helping out in the past and in the future. Cheers, Primefac, via MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 16:00, 16 February 2022 (UTC)

If he manages to unblock, would you be available to mentor? --Deepfriedokra (talk) 14:36, 10 March 2022 (UTC)

More than happy to do so, Deepfriedokra. I've been planning on returning to enwiki this month as my workload IRL has decreased somewhat, so I'd be free to mentor him if he is unblocked - thanks for reaching out to me regarding the matter. Patient Zerotalk 17:21, 10 March 2022 (UTC)

Administrators' newsletter – April 2022

News and updates for administrators from the past month (March 2022).

Guideline and policy news

Technical news

  • Access to Special:RevisionDelete has been expanded to include users who have the deletelogentry and deletedhistory rights. This means that those in the Researcher user group and Checkusers who are not administrators can now access Special:RevisionDelete. The users able to view the special page after this change are the 3 users in the Researcher group, as there are currently no checkusers who are not already administrators. (T301928)
  • When viewing deleted revisions or diffs on Special:Undelete a back link to the undelete page for the associated page is now present. (T284114)
