Welcome, and just to draw your attention to a longer message I've left on your Welsh user talk page (even though it is largely in English). — Alan 09:03, 31 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Dear uploader: The media file you uploaded as Image:FarlieDoubleEnded.jpg has been listed for speedy deletion because you selected a copyright license type implying some type of restricted use, such as for non-commercial use only, or for educational use only or for use on Wikipedia by permission. While it might seem reasonable to assume that such files can be freely used on Wikipedia, this is in fact not the case[1][2]. Please do not upload any more files with these restrictions on them, because images on Wikipedia need to be compatible with the GNU Free Documentation License or another free license, which allow anyone to use it for any purpose, commercial or non-commercial. See our non-free content guidelines for more more information.

If you created this media file and want to use it on Wikipedia, you may re-upload it (or amend the image description if it has not yet been deleted) and use the license {{GFDL-self}} to license it under the GFDL, or {{cc-by-sa-3.0}} to license it under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike license, or use {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain.

If you did not create this media file, please understand that the vast majority of images found on the internet are not appropriate for Wikipedia. Most content on the internet is copyrighted and the creator of the image has exclusive rights to use it. Wikipedia respects the copyrights of others - do not upload images that violate others' copyrights. In certain limited cases, we may be able to use an image under a claim of fair use - if you are certain that fair use would apply here, you may choose one of the fair use tags from this list. If no fair use rationale applies, you may want to contact the copyright holder and request that they make the media available under a free license.

If you have any questions please ask at Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. Thank you. Ian¹³/t 18:35, 6 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

It seems you may be trying to claim fair use with regards to publication in Wikipedia articles, if this is the case, please read Wikipedia:Non-free content criteria, and note that a non-free content rationale MUST be provided (please feel free to use Template:Non-free_use_rationale). Thank you, Ian¹³/t 18:35, 6 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use rationale for Image:EglwysHenllan.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:EglwysHenllan.jpg. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia constitutes fair use. Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Ian¹³/t 18:39, 6 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Also required is:

Or a suitable form of copy-left licensing.

I have tried not to delete these images instantly, despite them qualifying, to provide you a chance to change the licences.

Your efforts to improve Wikipedia are appreciated, and I think could really improve some articles, but we do have strict licensing requirements. Basically, they need to be licensed such that they can be used commercially (and of course you need to be a holder of copyright to do this), or you are uploading under a claim of fair use (a minefield sadly) but in that case images won't be able to be more than about 300px tall or wide, and will require both a fair-use copyright tag and a rationale for each article they are included in. This has now been done on all the images. Paul Bevan (talk) 09:01, 7 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use

[edit]

P'nawn da Paul! I have left the same message for User:Telor Roberts - I just wanted to say that I have been reviewing the images you have uploaded, and they all seem fine provided a fair use rationale is added. Note that fair use rationales are particularly applicable to images that cannot be duplicated by a free equivalent - this would mean people who have died, buildings that no longer exist, and so on.

Also note that more preferable than fair use would be for the NLoW to release low-resolution copies of their images under a free license; I hope this may be possible in future. I would advise either you or Paul Bevan make contact with our fair use image specialists, at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Fair use; they will be able to give your far better advice than I. Diolch yn fawr y pob lwc! Neıl 14:12, 7 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

After myself also taking a look, may I ask of the following:
  • Images of a person can only be fair-use if they are dead (and therefore a free image isn't possible), and it would be good if this could be explicitly stated;
  • For images of buildings you should state how it is different from the building today, or that the building no longer exists (if you can't say this, again the image cannot be used under fair-use);
  • Please don't upload images with a maximum width or height (whichever is largest) of more than ~320px
  • It should depict only the specific subject concerned.
  • For ALL images, please provide a link to the collection's image description page from the project and/or a direct link to the photo (both if possible...), to allow us to fully attribute the source;
and if you could please do this to all of the above images as well please. I have done the resizing and cropping for you.
But most of all, thank you for adding to Wikipedia. Cheers, Ian¹³/t 18:54, 7 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Replaceable fair use images

[edit]
Replaceable fair use
Replaceable fair use

Thanks for uploading Image:EglwysHenllan.jpg. I noticed the description page specifies that the media is being used under a claim of fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first non-free content criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed media could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this media is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the media description page and edit it to add {{di-replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if uploaded before 13 July 2006), per our non-free content policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Do you want to opt out of receiving this notice?

And also, Image:GoleudyEnlli.jpg

Whilst these images are historical and unique, their depiction of the subject is not. That is, if I went there and took a freely-licensed image, as far as I can tell it would look pretty much the same. Ian¹³/t 19:55, 7 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Ian. Just to confirm then, you're referring to the bit of the rationale which says "Replaceable?" ? I guess our view was that there was no free replacement for this image but it seems that you're saying that this actually means "if someone took the same photo now, would it give the same information"? Do we, then, need to justify why the representation in the image is unique (ie the image is of an event or period of time which has finished - such as "Neb Church before its destruction" or "x valley in the 1800s, before the clearance of the forest"? Uploaded Images & Fair Use Rationale

[edit]

With regards to rationale, you need to nothing more.

However, for all images, a link to the collection's image description page from the project and/or a direct link to the photo (both if possible...), to allow us to fully attribute the source.

Image:GoleudyEnlli.jpg and Image:EglwysHenllan.jpg may be deleted as replaceable. This is because for images of buildings you should state how it is different from the building today, or that the building no longer exists (if you can't say this, again the image cannot be used under fair-use). I have reissued the tag so that they aren't in the delete queue, giving another 48 hours.

Hello

[edit]

Hello Paul,

I'm an administrator over at a sister project to Wikipedia that houses images for the Wikimedia Foundation. I'd like to start a dialog regarding your pilot program because your intentions look admirable and Wikipedia's way of doing things often surprises newcomers: our license and volunteer structures create unique constraints and opportunities.

If the results thus far are disappointing, bear in mind that our image policies are built around managing very young volunteers who don't understand the basics of copyright. In order to keep the site compliant with the law and manage an enormous volume of uploads we've adopted practices that can feel cumbersome to the site's more mature and high-minded contributors. The potential synergies would utilize a somewhat different strategy.

It's obvious that you have valuable encyclopedic material to contribute, and Wikipedia doesn't mind giving credit where credit is due. Our copyleft and open edit nature makes it a little bit challenging to merge the two concepts. Let's talk, and I'd be glad to bring in other experienced people to help facilitate this undertaking.

Best wishes, DurovaCharge! 08:29, 18 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Thanks for uploading images. Please note that images which were first published earlier than 1923 can be tagged {{PD-US}} and images whose creator died more than 70 years ago can be tagged {{PD-old-70}}. This is because the copyright on those images has expired and you do not need to grant permission for their use. Stifle (talk) 12:49, 17 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Standard image

[edit]

The {{non-free standard test image}} template isn't appropriate for most of the images you are uploading. See standard test image for information on what is a standard test image. WP:ICT has details of other image tags you can use — as I mentioned above, a lot of the images you are uploading are no longer subject to copyright. Stifle (talk) 12:51, 17 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

NLW image archive

[edit]

Did anything ever come of your offer to provide images from the LlGC image archive? If so, and it is still open, I'd like to take you up on the offer. There are shed loads of Welsh biography articles searching for images. Daicaregos (talk) 09:13, 27 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
