New DYK nomination?
Hi, Pgallert. Happy New Year! Would you mind nominating Charles Walenn for DYK? The hook could be something like:
- ...that, after a career of starring on tour in Gilbert and Sullivan's Savoy operas, Charles Walenn first played the title role in The Private Secretary at the Savoy Theatre, where he had never appeared before.
Does that make the irony clear enough? He had starred, for over a dozen years, *only* on tour, never at the Savoy, in the Savoy operas, and only later did he ever appear there! - Hallo Gereon, ich hab in der Sache schon ein paar Emails mit Marcus Cyron gewechselt. Ich fahre definitiv runter. Falls wir mehr als 5 Leute werden, muessen wir diskutieren, wir wir das machen wollen. Falls nicht, einfach in Windhoek aufschlagen und Platz nehmen, die Route und das Nebenprogramm wird sich nach der vorhandenen Zeit richten. Seriöse Website?
Hallo! Darf ich dich was fragen? Kannst du die Website https://www.namibia-1on1.com/ einordnen? Sie kommt sowohl in der deutschsprachigen als auch in der englischsprachigen in der Wikipedia gelegentlich als Beleg in Artikeln zu Namibia vor, und sie bietet tatsächlich viel Information, aber wegen ihrer Privat-Website-Aufmachung habe ich Zweifel. Ich wüsste gerne, ob man sie deiner Meinung nach als zuverlässige Quelle verlinken kann. Konkreter Anlass meiner Frage ist der Artikel über de:Anna Mungunda, über die ich dort Informationen gefunden habe. Viele Grüße --Mushushu (talk) 21:18, 12 April 2018 (UTC)
- Hallo Mushushu! 1-on-1 ist als Quelle wahrscheinlich grenzwertig, von rein touristischen Informationen abgesehen. Einige historische Dokumente, z.B. die Eulogien fuer die Namibianischen Nationalhelden, findet man aber nirgendwo anders, ich hab 1-on-1 daher auf den Englischen Seiten auch verwendet. Ich gehe davon aus, dass diese Dokumente nicht absichtlich verfaelscht wurden. Wenn es aber um die Einordnungen oder Bewertungen historischer Begebenheiten geht, wuerde ich vorsichtig sein, besonders, wenn 1-on-1 anderen Quellen widerspricht. Auf der Englische Version von Anna Mungunda zum Beispiel hatte vermutlich eher Klaus Dierks recht, wem das Auto gehoerte, selbst wenn auch Dierks kein professioneller Historiker war. - Was das Auto angeht, habe ich verschiedene Versionen gelesen, die alle auf eher vagen Erzählungen nicht mehr benennbarer Personen beruhen. (Die Seite von Klaus Dierks finde ich optisch so schwer zu ertragen, dass mein Eindruck des womöglich gut recherchierten Inhalts etwas leidet...) Deshalb habe ich mich entschieden, diesen Teil kurz zu halten, zumal ich mit solchen Details nicht vom Kern der Geschichte ablenken will, nämlich dass sie erschossen wurde.
- Mir wurde erst gerade klar, dass Anna Mungunda unter den ersten neun Personen war, die auf dem Heldenacker geehrt wurden. Hast du zufällig eine Idee, wo ich mehr darüber lesen könnte, wie diese Gedenkstätte genau funktioniert? - Naja, eine richtige Mitschrift wird es eher nicht sein. Kann mir nicht vorstellen, dass Personal von 1-on-1 bei der Einweihung geladen war. Es ist also von irgendwoher kopiert. Was den Heldenacker angeht, mehr als was auf Wikipedia steht, weiss ich auch nicht: Die 9 urspruenglichen Helden sind nicht dort begraben, die meisten der danach folgenden allerdings schon. Regarding the wording of the hook, and forgive my lack of education, does 'creating/originating the role' mean anything more than being the first to perform it? - Thank you! I fixed the duplication of the word "role". The role creator or originator is the first person to play the role, usually in the original production. I think the hook is interesting, because (1) Bentham was so disappointed that he abruptly ended his career; (2) The Sorcerer was the first full-length Gilbert and Sullivan opera that is still performed today, 141 years later, so its stars are of interest in musical theatre history, because without Gilbert and Sullivan, musical theatre would not have evolved as it did. - No, I don't think the clause is clear without a noun. It proved to be his last role, part, or engagement. Feel free to choose either "performing engagement" or "role". One could say "part", but that would not be crystal clear to non-theatregoers, I think. Or, it could be:
...that after a decade-long opera and concert career, George Bentham originated the leading role of Alexis in The Sorcerer (1877); he then stopped performing."

Hallo Peter, ich habe die Artikel über die namibischen Trockenflüsse nach Autoren durchgesehen, die Englisch sprechen und sich mit Namibia auskennen - und bin dabei unweigerlich auf dich gestoßen. Dann habe ich mir deine WikiStammtisch-Episode angehört; sehr interessant, danke! In der deutschen Sprachversion sind wir uns gerade unschlüssig, was mit dem Wort de:Rivier anzufangen ist: Wir haben festgestellt, dass rivier im Niederländischen schlicht und einfach Fluss heißt und im Afrikaans ebenfalls Fluss, aber dabei auch solche in Süd- und Südwestafrika einschließt, die nicht dauerhaft Wasser führen. Und dass die Deutschsprechenden in Namibia sich das Wort Rivier aus dem Afrikaans entlehnt und dessen Bedeutung auf Trockenfluss verengt haben. Geblieben ist die Frage, ob das Wort Rivier auch von Nicht-Deutschsprechern in Namibia verwendet wird. Dafür habe ich - der ich keine eigene Anschauung des Landes habe - im Internet keinen Hinweis gefunden; wenn auf Englisch schriftlich über namibische Trockenflüsse berichtet worden ist, dann immer über dry rivers oder rivers, das Wort rivier ist mir dort nicht untergekommen. In der de:Diskussion:Rivier#Kgetlengrivier hat der in Namibia lebende User:Chtrede darauf hingewiesen, dass er in der Umgangssprache der Englischsprecher in Namibia durchaus die Unterscheidung von river = nasser Fluss und rivier = trockener Fluss gehört hat. Kannst du uns als dort Lebender, der üblicherweise im Alltag Englisch spricht, weiterhelfen: Ist diese Unterscheidung im Englischen in Namibia weit verbreitet, und gibt es Wörterbücher oder andere autoritative Publikationen, die uns über die außerdeutsche Verwendung von Rivier Aufschluss geben könnten? - Nicht, dass es irgendwie als wissenschaftliche Quelle herhalten könnte, aber z.B. steht hier auch ganz klar Rivier: "...there are only dry rivers in Namibia. - Wenn wir ins Englische wechseln sollen, sag übrigens gern Bescheid; ich habe gerade nach rivier namibia in dieser Sprachversion gesucht und unter anderem gesehen, dass du, Peter, selbst schonmal das Rivier eingebaut hast; ansonsten finde ich das eigentlich nur in Kaukausib mit Hinweis auf de:Rivier, das User:Hp.Baumeler angelegt hat, und in der disambiguation Rivier, bei der der Autor allerdings keine Belege für die eingebaute Zeile mit den Rivieren im Englischen hat, siehe User talk:Delirium#Rivier. - Hallo Andropov! Chtrede ist in der Tat keine schlechtere Quelle als ich, er ist so weit ich weiss hier geboren, im Gegensatz zu mir. Um die eigentliche Frage aus meiner Sicht zu beantworten: Jeder in Namibia weiss, was ein Rivier ist: Ein Trockenfluss. Das betrifft auch nicht-Deutschsprachige, aber dazu muss man bedenken, dass (a) fast niemand in Namibia strikt einsprachig ist, und dass (b) alle Fluesse bis auf zwei Trockenfluesse sind.
- Rivier ist, wie Du schon sagst, Afrikaans und bedeutet einfach "Fluss". Eingedeutscht beschraenkt sich die Bedeutung meist auf de:Trockenfluss, eingeenglischt auf ephemeral river, wohl weil ein Wort zur Unterscheidung von all den normalen Fluessen, also denen mit Wasser, nuetzlich war. Waehrend also ein staendig fliessender Fluss in Afrikaans immernoch ein Rivier waere, z.b. af:Oranjerivier, wuerde man auf Deutsch eher "Der Oranje" oder "Oranjefluss" sagen, und in Englisch "Orange" oder "Orange River". Eine offizielle Quelle wird allerdings schwierig. Namibia ist zu klein, um eigene Deutsch / Englisch Woerterbuecher herauszugeben. Ich besitze Englisch-Otjiherero, da steht nur River, kein Rivier. Und selbst eine Google-Suche wie "site:namibian.com.na rivier" liefert nur Orts- und Farmnamen, und keine eigenstaendige Verwendung des Begriffs. Umgangssprachlich ist es aber auf jeden Fall weit verbreitet. Hoffe, dass das erstmal hilft! Gruss, Pgallert (talk) 20:56, 21 August 2018 (UTC)

- @Andropov: Naja, da kommt die Winzigkeit Namibias in die Quere: Wir werden so um die 3.000 Dozenten in Namibia haben, davon vielleicht 50 Linguisten. Wuerde einer davon ueber Namibian English forschen, wuesste ich das. Vielleicht ist einfach die beste Begruendung dafuer, dass das Wort Rivier allgemein bekannt ist, dass es, falls es in Englischen Texten auftaucht, niemals uebersetzt oder erklaert wird. - It all goes back to user bin mai created a vast sea of mining articles in 2013 or so from one source entries - included in them were mines that have never existed (they were mineral deposits that were announced but were never developed)

It doesnt really bother me whether they end up (like our conversations at wikimanias) - or where they go, just thought there might have been a chance that you might have had knowledge of these... and if they get kept so be it - but it seemed a vast amount of bin mai's edits were from very poor sources and in most cases discovered deposits and not necessarily worked mines. It seemed to make a mockery of the mining project being an accurate mining venture... and not a field of hoaxes so to speak. JarrahTree 10:36, 3 October 2018 (UTC)

Hi JarrahTree! I checked out the matter a bit. It seems as if the AfD discussions are going nowhere, certainly not towards a consensus to delete. I believe all of those articles, except Valencia mine which indeed exists, should be nominated together, outlining that the creator didn't understand the difference between a deposit and a mine. The only source clearly lists all of the following - not currently at AfD - as deposits and/or place (farm) names:
For each entry have a wrong and unreferenced statement ("is a mine"), followed by a wrong and unsupported claim ("one of the largest uranium reserves"), followed by an Original-Research calculation drawn from a publication of the World Nuclear Association, a partisan group promoting the nuclear industry. As most of the U-mining companies will likely be members, this source is not independent and thus not suitable.

It appears that this is a fake article, because that person never existed : he was confused with Friedrich-Wilhelm Krüger at the time of his creation. ArbCom 2018 election voter message
Hello, Pgallert. Voting in the 2018 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23.59 on Sunday, 3 December. All users who registered an account before Sunday, 28 October 2018, made at least 150 mainspace edits before Thursday, 1 November 2018 and are not currently blocked are eligible to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.
The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.
