Afrikaners in Namibia

I appreciate your concern that one not "guess" as to the number of Afrikaners currently living in Namibia. However my edit on the Afrikaners page was not a guess but an estimate. *All* the population numbers in the summary box (excepting those from the 2011 South African census) are estimates. The number 92,400 for 2003 (which you restored) is itself an estimate, generated (I assume from the attached cite) from the calculation: 1,927,447 (July, 2003 est.) * 0.08 ("Ethnic groups: Black 84%, White 8%, Mixed 8%") * 0.6 ("About 60% of the whites speak Afrikaans") = 92,517. But why is this estimate (now 20 years old) any better than my estimate? Especially when I clearly explicated my methodology which is based on 2016 Namibian census data? Darelmass (talk) 17:01, 28 March 2023 (UTC)

Hi Darelmass, thanks for reaching out to me. I'm not sure if you read the policy on Original Research which I cited in my edit summary. No matter how good your estimate is, it is not on you to make it. Wikipedia summarises published and verified statements, and if there is a statement that cannot be validated then it will eventually be removed. I wasn't aware that the previous numbers were likewise estimates---that means, they should be removed, too. I suggest to take this discussion to Talk:Afrikaners.
But your estimate isn't good, just like the old one wasn't. There is no reason why the average household size should apply to Afrikaner families. There is no reason why half of Afrikaans speakers should be white. There is no reason that all white Afrikaans speakers should be Afrikaners. There is no indication the Afrikaner population has grown over the years. And there is no determination of what is required to be counted there: some Afrikaner roots, more than 50%, "pure"? As such, it is just a number, admittedly not worse than the older one, but one that definitely belongs elsewhere but not in Wikipedia.
I haven't questioned your other changes because I mainly maintain Namibia-related articles. I suggest to either put a historic number from the time when ethnicity was part of the census questions, or to indicate the amount of Afrikaans speakers instead, or to remove this number entirely. Hope this helps, Pgallert (talk) 11:02, 29 March 2023 (UTC)

Article's for deletion

Many years ago you helped me learn about COI and how using Articles for a Creation was a great way for peer reviewers to help me vet my own COI. Those articles were about my parents, a researcher and a philosopher. Both are now being considered for deletion. I wanted to let you know about these discussions. Please let me know if this amounts to canvasing.
