I've heard "nonstop violence" by Apop Berzerk and possibly the other one. I liked the few songs I heard from them. Weird story behind that actually--a now former friend of mine really liked them and had me listen to some of their stuff. She was crazy though, ended up stalking me and becoming bulimic because she thought I wouldn't go out with her since she was slightly pudgy. Honestly, the whole eating disorder thing was way more of a turn-off than her weight ever was. The scary thing was I almost did ask her out, before finding out about all that stuff, then I stayed as far away from her as possible. Anyway, I've heard and like both The Dresden Dolls ones, since they're off the same cd (I also really like "Slide", "Missed Me" and "Truce", although it's quite long). I've heard a few songs by KMFDM but I don't know if that was one of them, but they're alright. I've heard "The Hand that Feeds" by NIN, but I'm not sure about the other one. Well, I must say, I didn't expect to hear about stalking when I asked that question. :) Although, that was definitely worth the read - how did you end up escaping the girl, by the way? Most of my list was, strangely enough, given to me by my gothic older brother when I was the ripe old age of ten; I'm the only person I know who's been listening to gothic/industrial rock since the fourth grade. :P I do really like The Dresden Dolls, though, which I only found out about last year. I have a strange love for The Dresden Dolls. I mean, everything I listen to is overtly political, usually really aggressive punk. I first heard them on a punk radio show that played Girl A and then I heard Coin-op Boy on the same station during regular airtime. I had a gift card to tower so I got their cd. And although it is nothing like the rest of the stuff I listen to, I find that I really like it. I love the darkness of it, along with the occasional aggressive outbursts and Amanda Palmer gives one of the nicest vocal deliveries period. The diversity of sound is also really nice. I have a soft spot in my heart though for dark gloomy music, I just don't listen to it much. I just remembered though, I'm going to switch Half Jack to Bad Habit, because that song is actually a lot better. They're my guilty pleasure--the one relatively apolitical band that I love. I also feel bad because they're so popular, but they are still sorta underground. I really want to hear their cover of War Pigs though, since I really like that song and it is political.

As for the girl, she got tired of me, plus I just avoided her. She actually did similar things to other people too (male and female). I was talking to an ex-girlfriend of hers after the fact and she said "yeah (Name removed to protect the guilty) was the biggest mistake of my life". Basically, she was really clingly to lots of people and once she stopped obsessing over me, she found someone else, plus I no longer go to that school and I live at least 30 minutes away from her now. Actually, even her leaving me alone was pretty freaky. I used to have long hair back then and there was this college student in town who also had long hair and was 4 or 5 years older than me (I was in high school at the time). A lot of people thought we were brothers (I had at least half a dozen people ask if I was related to this kid, a few of them before I ever even met him myself). Anyways, soon after I made it clear to her that I wasn't going to go out with her, she ended up going out with him. What's even weirder is that one of my ex-girlfriends later went out with him too. Another thing that's really funny is how I first found out she liked me. She was in my room and she let me go through one of her notebooks (I don't remember what we were looking for) and I flipped to a page that had my first and last name written over and over again in the shape of a heart. She yelled "Oh shit, you weren't supposed to see that!", which kinda upset my mom. Then she hastily left. That was the day she found out where I (formerly) lived. Well, I can't say that wasn't an enjoyable (if slightly disturbing) read - high school is such fun, no? :) Sadly, I'm still stuck there until the end of the year (coincidences aplenty: my high school accreditation ends on my birthday, the same day as the PS3's international release - woo!), but I'm lucky enough never to have been stalked. Although, come to think of it, my circle of friends certainly do seem to enjoy going out with each other, swapping partners all the time. Hmmm.

And yes, The Dresden Dolls really are that special kind of awesome. Generally, as you may have picked up from the rest of my listing, I'm into gothic/industrial rock, but for that group I was perfectly happy to make an exception. I'm really glad I was reminded about The Dresden Dolls. I listened to them after putting up that post last night and it really made me feel better--I got rejected by a girl I did like yesterday. But she was nice about it and we're still friends at least. That is one of the best cd's to listen to when you're depressed (it's helped me out a few times now). You hear that people? Don't waste your money on prozac which can cause sexual dysfunction, nervous tics and possible suicidal tendencies, just listen to The Dresden Dolls :) And good luck surviving the rest of the year, high school can be crazy. Some songs do that to a person, I can't say I get it for "Rule Britannia" or "God Save the Queen", but Woody Guthrie's music can get me like that. Not just the one I put, but "A Picture from Life's Other Side" too, singing them at night in the middle of nowhere walking down a road in the rain at the top of your voice and out of tune impresses something upon yourself. It's about knowing more about my fellow 'pedians, and perhaps finding tracks I should give a listen to that I wasn't aware of... I could have listed my most popular choices, but went with ones that I like to listen to while editing (or thinking about what WP means to me, or IRCing...). I like that idea - it's an interesting concept. Now, since we'd be counting users who all share favourite songs/artists, would it then be possible to list those users all together on a page? I'm imagining that this list could grow pretty large over time ("OMGXBOXHUGE", if you will), so it'd probably be quite handy to be able to see all the other users that like a particular artist or song - since this is focused on learning about other Wikipedians anyway. Would this work and be as interesting as I imagine, or just cross-referencing hell? navbox

I have created User:Lar/Wikipedian_navbox for inclusion in soundtrack and other similar project pages, and made the changes to existing projects. If anyone starts a new project page changing the navbox changes all the other pages. It uses #ifeq to detect that it is on a page and suppress that page from the list of pages. ++Lar: t/c 23:32, 21 August 2006 (UTC)

This is really the best place for the list. Having a list that was started by Phaedriel would hardly belong on another user's page, correct? As far as being unencyclopedic, I'll have to think that over when the 'word' is actually admitted to a dictionary and given a denotation. Dictionaries are meant to reflect usage, not create it. You understood what I was attempting to communicate, but chose to argue semantics. My point is that this page does not enrich Wikipedia, and this kind of effort could be spent on better things. That's actually not the case. Dictionaries are not for connotation. I did understand what you were implying, however, I was having a bit of fun with it at everyone's expense who chooses to use the word 'unencyclopedic.' No time here is mandatory, as we are not salaried employees. Along those lines, the rationale that the effort could be spent on better things would only work if we are to assume that if this page did not exist, we would be bettering articles. I think this is a nice place for users to get to know one another. It provides some harmony, some stress relief, and some commonalities. The building of this wiki is social by nature, and although you are correct that it should not be facebook, those who are contributing to this page have made generous contributions to this project and if the reward is a bit of amusement, so be it. Moving to own userspace

I suggest to advise everyone to move their section to their own userspace and then include it here. That would make it way easier to maintain ones list and this page, since you wouldn't have to load the full page to add a song and there would be only one line for each user here. (see my section)

I've been working my selection up on a user subpage and transcluding it here since last summer so, yeah, I entirely agree. This page takes a good while to load now, and if more people follow our examples and transclude, it seems like a sensible way to go. Gnostrat (talk) 23:58, 22 March 2008 (UTC)

YouTube links?

It has always made sense to me that songs on this page should link to YouTube videos. Often, I will scroll down somebody's list and find that most of the songs I have never heard. But if I can click on a YouTube link, I am very conveniently and immediately learning something about the user, and getting a musical education at the same time.

Actually, though, very few people are putting in YouTube links. Would that be because copyright issues are inhibiting?

Well, YouTube has just reached a deal with the British music industry which means not only that premium music vids will be back on YT but also that the companies take their cut for the use of songs in fan vids. Said a YT spokesman: "this deal doesn't only cover the music videos but also music included in TV programmes like the X Factor and also for the inclusion of music in user videos as well". The way I'm reading that, it should mean no worries about the copyright status of the material we link to. It won't be actionable.

What about the video content that accompanies the music? Well, this obviously isn't an issue if it's offered by the band's own YouTube channel or if it's one of those blank music videos without clips. But even clips from some TV shows aren't a big deal. The British Broadcasting Corporation regards YouTube as a BBC promotional vehicle and a spokesman stressed that they won't pursue BBC-copyrighted clips uploaded by members, though they might for example "swap poor quality clips with the real thing".

What it all boils down to is that you could link to any song with impunity if it appears in a Doctor Who fan vid. Final Fantasy vids are another option as the clips are often taken from free downloads.

It seems to me the YouTube deal just means that the recording industry is catching up with the concept of fair use, as applied in the copyright disclaimer that one uploader stuck on this Madonna vid:

"Under Section 107 of the Copyright Act 1976, allowance is made for "fair use"....Fair use is a use permitted by copyright statute that might otherwise be infringing. Non-profit, educational or personal use tips the balance in favor of fair use." I think that's got both YouTube and Wikipedia covered. It should have had us covered all along.

Secondly: in general, YouTube videos should not be linked, unless you're sure they do not infringe anyone's copyright. (See WP:YOUTUBE.) It's true there is a 'fair use' defence (not a right), but one of our policies is that copyrighted material used under a claim of fair use is only to be used in articles, not on user pages or elsewhere outside the main encyclopaedia. The fact that many corporations such as the BBC will not pursue people who upload their content onto YouTube does not mean it is not infringement. Thanks for the clarification. I take your point about fair use. However, we needn't in fact be claiming fair use. Wouldn't we just need to satisfy the criterion in WP:ELNEVER ("Linking to websites that display copyrighted works is acceptable as long as the website has licensed the work")?

It seems to me that these agreements with YouTube do go further than merely a policy not to pursue infringements. The one concluded a few days ago with the Performing Right Society certainly does. It licenses the use of "more than 10 million pieces of music" on YT, both in videos authorised by record labels and in user uploads, so there'd be no infringement in the first place. And the PRS already has a licensing agreement covering the music on last.fm -- so we could link there instead if there were any doubt about a given song on YT.

I read WP:YOUTUBE and WP:ELNEVER before I posted my comment above. Even as things stand, we could link to plenty of uploaded music without contradicting the letter or spirit of anything in that policy. But the guideline could probably do with a rewrite to make that clearer, and to reflect the changed situation.

Still, I suppose it couldn't do any harm if I revert back to cautious mode until we get the fine detail on the YT/PRS deal. And also cautious with the TV clips -- although, given that the BBC has been known to mine spoof YT edits of these clips for its comedy and talk shows, it'd have a bit of a cheek to claim them as infringements.
