Invitation to events in June and July: bot, script, template, and Gadget makers wanted
I invite you to the yearly Berlin hackathon, 1-3 June. Registration is now open. If you need financial assistance or help with visa or hotel, then please register by May 1st and mention it in the registration form.
This is the premier event for the MediaWiki and Wikimedia technical community. We'll be hacking, designing, teaching, and socialising, primarily talking about ResourceLoader and Gadgets (extending functionality with JavaScript), the switch to Lua for templates, Wikidata, and Wikimedia Labs.
We want to bring 100-150 people together, including lots of people who have not attended such events before. User scripts, gadgets, API use, Toolserver, Wikimedia Labs, mobile, structured data, templates -- if you are into any of these things, we want you to come!
I also thought you might want to know about other upcoming events where you can learn more about MediaWiki customization and development, how to best use the web API for bots, and various upcoming features and changes. We'd love to have power users, bot maintainers and writers, and template makers at these events so we can all learn from each other and chat about what needs doing.
Check out the the developers' days preceding Wikimania in July in Washington, DC and our other events.
Best wishes! - Sumana Harihareswara, Wikimedia Foundation's Volunteer Development Coordinator. Please reply on my talk page, here or at mediawiki.org. Sumana Harihareswara, Wikimedia Foundation Volunteer Development Coordinator 00:35, 4 April 2012 (UTC)
Deletion of Forexpros
Hi Phantomsteve,
You deleted the Forexpros wikipage back in February 2011. I understand that the page was not following the wikipedia guidelines.
Please could you reopen our page and I will make sure all the rules are followed accordingly.
I really wish to have the company on Wikipedia as it's so useful, please could you grant me this request.
Kind regards
Rachelle — Preceding unsigned comment added by 81.218.50.34 (talk) 09:13, 8 April 2012 (UTC)
- Forexpros has in fact been deleted twice. The first time (when I deleted it) was the result of an articles for deletion discussion here. The second time it was deleted was because it was seen as being promotional, and there was no indication of the importance or significance of the subject.
- Before I would consider recreating, I would need to be convinced of three things:
- That the company meets the notability criteria for inclusion - and especially the criteria for organisations and companies.
- That there are some significant coverage of the company at sources which are considered reliable and independent - the company's website and their press releases do not meet the requirements
- That the article would not exist for promotional or validation purposes.
- I have seen nothing to indicate that any of these are true in this case ("It's so useful" is not an indication of notability, and "our page" indicates that you are wanting to create a page for your own organisation, which is invariably for the wrong reason.)
- If you can demonstrate that the company meets the notability criteria, and can provide some examples of reliable independent sources with significant coverage of the company, we can discuss this further. Regards, PhantomSteve/talk|contribs\ 10:37, 8 April 2012 (UTC)
Deletion of Forexpros
Hi Phantomsteve,
There are already a few financial sites pages posted up that are similar to what we are doing
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yahoo_finance http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marketwatch http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seekingalpha
Here is a reference from an outside source: Cite error: There are <ref>
tags on this page without content in them (see the help page).http://tradersonline-mag.com/01_ezine/01_traders/en/2012/03/index.html#/38/zoomed
We are also cited as references on many wikipedia pages

We currently have around 2.3 monthly unique users coming to the Forexpros site as well.
Please could you let me know your thoughts on this and if there is anything else I need to provide you with.
Kind regards

- Other similar organisations having articles does not imply that yours should have an article - it could be that they *do* meet the notability criteria or alternatively that *those articles* should be deleted. Being cited in other articles does not make your company notable in its own right. The number of visitors to a website does not make it notable either. Finally the reference you provided. Is from a website which would not appear to meet Wikipedia's criteria for reliable websites - and in any case, 1 source (even if it is a reliable one) is not generally sufficient to show notability. Overall, I still do not see evidence that your company meets notability.
- Why do you think it is necessary to have an article? You might want to read "What Wikipedia is NOT for". Regards, -- PhantomSteve.alt/talk\[alternative account of Phantomsteve] 09:46, 9 April 2012 (UTC)
Cirex
Regards and my respect; I have added online versions of two printed magazines for references on the article I ask to be created. I know IMDB is not a reference (credits are there online), but the song credits on the movie Taken are also on the final screen. Hope you can help. If I have to shorten or arrange something please let me know. Thanks Mroxidizer1 (talk) 21:52, 8 April 2012 (UTC)
- Having looked at Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/Cirex, I do not think that the G4T Ink reference is sufficient to establish notability, and the other references also fail in this regard. I do not think that it meets the threshold for inclusion in Wikipedia. Regards, -- PhantomSteve.alt/talk\[alternative account of Phantomsteve] 09:39, 9 April 2012 (UTC)

Proposed undeletion of Transient (acoustics)
Hi Phantomsteve
Just a heads-up that I'm proposing to undelete a page which you were involved in PRODing, see Talk:Transient (acoustics)#Proposed undeletion, any comments welcome but it's really the proposing user who should reply so no response is required unless you wish to. Andrewa (talk) 01:52, 10 April 2012 (UTC)
- A quick comment - as you are contesting the deletion, it could have been restored with no further discussion, as it was a PROD deletion. If anyone objects to it existing, they need to go to AfD. I will comment along these lines later today when I'm on the computer again -- PhantomSteve.alt/talk\[alternative account of Phantomsteve] 07:28, 10 April 2012 (UTC)
- Oho. Thanks, I haven't been involved in PROD before, I knew it could be challenged before deletion but didn't realise Wikipedia:Requests for undeletion even existed. But I've blundered in restoring the talk before going there. Andrewa (talk) 11:16, 10 April 2012 (UTC)
- Update: I have restored the content as it was prior to the PROD, and left an explanatory note on the talk page. In summary: a PROD should be uncontroversial - if there are any objections (even after the deletion) then it is not deleted (or is restored). If this had gone to WP:UND then it would have been restored upon request. The correct procedure now is in the hands of those wanting it deleted - they need to take it to AfD. - Ok i've goe to AfD as requeest and read the isntructions on how to nominate the article for deletion. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:AFDHOWTO#How_to_nominate_a_single_page_for_deletion
- the first thing it says is "Put the deletion tag on the article." - which you have removed. So please link me to the correct instructions. thanks Vexorg (talk) 02:50, 11 April 2012 (UTC)
- The tag it refers to, if you read the instructions properly, is the
{{afd1}}
tag. You used the PROD tag instead. -- PhantomSteve.alt/talk\[alternative account of Phantomsteve] 07:15, 11 April 2012 (UTC)- OK thanks. Must have missed that. sorry :) - I shall use the correct tag -thanks Vexorg (talk) 20:55, 11 April 2012 (UTC)

- Incidentally, whether I think the article should exist or not is irrelevant in this case - as an administrator, it is my role to ensure the procedures are followed. However, it is also part of my job to help give advise, which I have also done! For what it's worth, I happen to agree that this is inaccurate at the moment so I might look into this a bit more the next time I'm on my computer rather than on my mobile! ~~<< — Preceding unsigned comment added by Phantomsteve.alt (talk • contribs) 07:21, 11 April 2012 (UTC)

AfD expertise request
Hi, Steve! Glad to have noticed an AfD you put up, if only to have occasion to say hello. I suppose you have it watchlisted, but might you find time to look at the other articles created by the same user that I referenced there as perhaps failing to meet notability requirments? I've never AfD'd anything - although I probably should learn, real soon now ;-). Your expertise would be helpful. Best regards, – OhioStandard (talk) 18:16, 17 April 2012 (UTC)
- If I get a chance, I'll have a look - but no promises! It's not my highest priority at the moment! PhantomSteve/talk|contribs\ 19:56, 17 April 2012 (UTC)
- I've AfD'd the ones you mentioned in the CI AfD. Looking at the other comic-related ones the editor created (all also UN-related!), I may nominate them at a future date. Looking at the contributions, there are some very useful ones - I don't want to put the editor off Wikipedia! PhantomSteve/talk|contribs\ 08:43, 23 April 2012 (UTC)
MSU Research Questions
Hello, I am involved with a research project for Michigan State University and am wondering if you would be able to answer a few questions regarding tool sets on Wikipedia. What were the tools you mainly used prior to becoming an admin, and after becoming an admin? Here is a link to the project if you are interested Wikipedia:United States Education Program/Courses/Wiki-Project Management (Jonathan Obar) , and if you have any questions please let me know. Thanks! Ltezl (talk) 22:26, 19 April 2012 (UTC)
