Player Box for Kevin McMahan

Thanks for adding a player box to my entry for Kevin McMahan. However, you had the wrong birthdate and place of birth, giving us the info that actually applied to Mario Williams. HOF succession box

Hi Phbasketball6 . I noticed you've been adding succession boxes to pro football hall of famers like Earl Campbell and John Hannah over the last few days, but I don't understand why. Those boxes are generally used to house links to articles about the proceeding and succeeding events to make navigation easier. They're useful for going from one year's super bowl to the next, or one year's Heisman winner to the next, but I don't see what purpose they're serving here: there are no articles for individual hall of fame classes, and everyone knows that the class of Class of 1991 comes after the Class of 1990. Would you mind discussing the issue on Wikipedia talk:WikiProject National Football League before adding any more boxes? ×Meegs 10:50, 17 February 2006 (UTC)

Coach stubs

I've noticed you've been adding coach stubs, which is great - they're all well-formed. Just letting you know that there's a specific stub category for them now - {{Amfoot-coach-stub}} and that the coach articles go in there now instead of the main bio category. NFL Player / Coach templates

Thanks for adding date of death to the player template. I see you're also working on the coaches one. I personally think a new one needs to be made from scratch to, among other things, replace fields that are perpetually dated. Good to talk to you, PHbasketball6. You've got to be really careful with templates, though, in two ways. First, since they affect so many pages, it's a good idea to propose any significan changes before you make them. The template's talk page or the afore-mentioned project talk page are a good place to do it. Second, it you're not sure how your changes will affect the template, you should probably clone it in your template in in your user space and experiment with it there so that all the pages that include it don't get screwed up.

Don't misunderstand me, though, you've done a lot of good work on articles, and they're most appreciated. ×Meegs 21:28, 18 February 2006 (UTC)

The I highly doubt I have effected the NFL players template, I only added stuff, but I think I messed up the coaches template. Sry

I won't argue that with you, but certainly I encourage you to discuss your large scale changes, whether they're achieved by changing a template or by hundreds of edits of elbow grease. You should also try to review the pages you make and check for errors, such as broken image syntax (the infobox only accepts the name of the image, sans wiki syntax) and all of those "red links".

One other thing, User:Arcadian and I have have had some discussions recently about the "Statistics" links in the NFL Player box that might interest you. If it does, take a look at our two talk pages, specifically here, here, and here. The issue is whether there's a more elegant way to display more than one link, and, to a lesser extent, whether more than one link is ever necessary or appropriate. If you have any remedies to the aesthetic problem, please suggest them; otherwise, consider using only one of the five {pfr,databaseFootball, espn, si, nfl.com} external links. In my opinion, databaseFootball is by far the best and more than sufficient for retired players, but whatever you like — even both — is fine. ×Meegs

Again copyrighted NFL images

They are copyrighted by default, as virtually everything is (see Wikipedia:Copyrights). Read Wikipedia:Publicity photos very carefully; the definition of promotional images is a bit narrower than Jaranda stated above, though all these HOF images don't meet those requirements either. All of them are going to have to be removed. Please consider going through and tagging them all {{db-unfree}} (see WP:CSD for more info) instead of leaving all of the work for others. There have been numerous discussions of images on Wikipedia talk:WikiProject National Football League that might interest you, but the common thread is that there are very few football images on the internet that are suitable for Wikipedia. Ideas about the fair use of magazine covers in articles that aren't about that magazine (or that don't have significant written content about that magazine) are currently in flux too.

I've said this several times before, but it's usually a good idea to check with others before making changes to a large number of pages. Wikipedia is a collaborative effort. ×Meegs 06:57, 1 March 2006 (UTC)

You haven't responded to my last message, and have since uploaded another image from http://www.hofplayers.com/. Although they appear to meet the criteria for speedy deletion, I've instead listed all 51 of them in the "fair use claims" section of WP:CP so that you'll have a longer period of time to defend their status as promotional images. A selfish request

I don't suppose you could create for yourself a userpage, could you? Because when I go through the list of Newly-Created Pages, one of the indicators I use for "possible new user; check all contributions carefully for vandalism/garbage" is a redlink to a userpage.

Football cards in player articles

Hi Phbasketball6. Would you mind holding-up on uploading images of football cards (like Image:DavidsonFrontSmall.jpg) until their fair use situation has been clarified? I've started a thread about it at Wikipedia talk:Fair use#Fair use of baseball cards images, and asked a number of people for their opinion, so hopefully it won't take too long. Also note that the question is about whether they qualify for fair use, but you tagged them all {{NoRightsReserved}}, which is not accurate. The copyrights on the images are likely either held by Topps or by the NFL who licensed them to Topps.

Bob Boyd (football player) has been proposed for deletion. Please review WP:BIO for the guidelines for articles about people. Also, please provide more context. For instance, spell out NFL . Definitely say who he played for. If you can improve the article to address these concerns, please do so and remove the prod notice.

- FYI: The only reason why Ricky Sanders/Temp exists is that the main Ricky Sanders article is currently listed on Wikipedia:Copyright problems. The temp page is only there for editors to provide an alternative new article that is not a copyright violation. In particular, sports cards are copyrighted and you can't upload them to Wikipedia. The exception is that there is a fair use exception if you are only using them to illustrate an article about the card itself, like the Honus Wagner card or something. Tempshill 20:22, 9 March 2006 (UTC)

Magazine covers

As I've told you before, the fair use of magazine covers in articles w/o substantial text about the magazine is currently widely debated. Wikipedia:Requests for comment/Ta bu shi da yu 2 might be a good starting point if you're interested in learning about what's going on. You've uploaded 51 Sports Illustrated covers in the last three days. Would you mind putting this project on the back burner until their fair use is a bit clearer? Not only do I not want your efforts to go to waste, but it will also be a lot of work for others should we have to go through a delete them all (as it was for the 20+ cards, and the 50+ images from hofplayers.com). I don't understand, I have thought the magazine covers from Sports Illustrated were allowed. Right, I've actually uploaded four SIs and a Time (that was deleted). My Time was at least mentioned in the article, but my SIs, like yours, and like John Brodie, are just used as portraits. When I uploaded them I was somewhat ignorant to current interpretations of fair use. Since then, however, the debate has gotten really stirred-up, first by the letter from Time's legal department, an then by Ta bu shi da yu's quick deletion of all their covers. (hold on, real life calls... I'll finish later)

Correct. It's very likely that the other magazines will have the same fate, so if you want to be safe, wait a month or two for things to shake-out; otherwise you're running a high risk of having your efforts wasted. None of this applies to articles that include substantial coverage of the magazine (or particular issue), such as the SI article itself, or an article with coverage analogous to Honus Wagner's section on his baseball card. ×Meegs 03:31, 10 March 2006 (UTC)

Look, I understand you're frustrated, but reverting good faith edits — like Genidealingwithfairuse's — without discussion is not productive. Please, before you make any more additions to the NFL info box, would you start a new topic at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject National Football League, propose the idea, and request feedback. Arcadian and I have been very deliberate with our additions in the past, and I'd like you to do the same. I may do a fairusereview of both the cards and the older sports illustated issues. I'm going to ask Topps if wikipedia can use there 1950s' 60s 70s and 80s images of their sports cards. Just don't upload magazines and don't remove orphaned fair use tags. If I successfully get Topps to use their cards, problem is over but this could take a while though. Guy Chamberlin

Hey, nice job on the Chamberlin page! You were about a step in front of me in starting it, as I've been tinkering with the Frankford Yellow Jackets (I live 1/2 block from Frankford High Stadium, where they played one game in 1931). Today, I was surprised to find that Wallace Triplett, first African-American to play in the NFL, had no article (imagine Jackie Robinson not being mentioned!). He went to Cheltenham High and Penn State. I haven't been able to find too much on him, except that he still holds a couple of NFL records (since 1949!), based on a single game in which he returned 4 kickoffs for 294 yds. He was still alive as of last year. Can you help? BillFlis 01:05, 19 March 2006 (UTC)

FYI, it's generally is it not a good idea to clear negative messages from your talk page, especially personally written ones, like these from User:Ta bu shi da yu and User:Zzyzx11. Doing so makes it difficult to for people in the future to know what's been said to you before, and makes it look like you're trying to hide criticism. Darin Erstad

Greetings!

I was wondering why you removed the "punter" category from Darin Erstad's article. Judging by the names listed in the category (Dwight Eddleman, in particular), it doesn't seem like it's restricted only to players who punted in the NFL. So, if major college is indeed good enough, then would Erstad not be an appropriate inclusion, also? Mwelch 05:49, 22 March 2006 (UTC)

Promotional images

Hi Phbasketball6. Sorry, but there's no evidence that Image:EarlCampbell.jpg, Image:WillieBrown.jpg, Image:Williamperry.jpg fit the narrow definition of publicity photos. Most photos from players' "official pages" are not. In most cases, the players not only don't own the rights to those photos, but they haven't even licensed the photos for use on their page. Wikipedia is a gigantic organization and has to act more responsibly. Please, in the future, don't use that image tag unless the photos fit Wikipedia:Publicity photos to the letter. Category:20 Interception club

Yes, but only add the highest number only to the player article, and do it by 20 instead of 10, better that way like Category:Sixty interseption club. Hey there. I see you're subcategorizing the overcrowded linemen categories by position, and that's very cool. One request, though: When you put a player in, say, Category:American football offensive tackles, please remove him from Category:American football offensive linemen. Abbreviations

Hi Phbasketball. I think it's better that we not abbreviate positions and school names like this. We're a general-purpose encyclopedia, and non-football fans are not familiar with them. Their lines are rarely the widest in the infobox, so I don't see the advantage. There's no debate about USC, though, since to many people — including football fans — it means University of South Carolina. There's been some scattered discussion of this in the past, most recently with regard to draft pages, but we could reopen the issue if you like. ×Meegs 21:20, 6 May 2006 (UTC)

Up to me, I would not shorten most names, but on this, I know there's at least some disagreement. It's generally good to avoid unnecessary piping, and it's less typing too. What follows is purely my opinion, and you're welcome to ignore: University of X and X Univerity go unabbreviated, X State University can become X State, and shorten anything ridiculously long. ×Meegs 22:04, 6 May 2006 (UTC)

Ray Flaherty Page

I enjoyed reading your Ray Flaherty page - one of his football teammates from Gonzanga University was Hust Stockton, who also played in the NFL (with the Frankford Yellow Jackets.)[2] This was the grandfather of basketball player John Stockton. The Flahertys and the Stocktons were life-long friends. I've just added an article about my father (Hap Moran) who played with Stockton on the 1926 Yellow Jackets and later with Flaherty on the Giants. Hap Moran's Son

Yes, my father was 46 when I was born, so well past his playing career, but we used to go to the Polo Grounds and watch the Giants practice in the 1950s and I also met some of the men he played with - he was especially close with Steve and Bill Owen. When my dad left the Giants he was given a life-time pass to any NFL game - sorry to say it got lost about thirty years ago - but they would let him sit in the press box or go on the field and when I was really young they'd just pass me in with him. Later the Giants would send us "Clergy Passes" for the home games - which is kind of odd since I grew up to become a "clergy" type. Through my web page I've been in contact with families of a number of Giants players like Morris Badgro, Ken Strong, Ray Flaherty, Chris Cagle, and some from the Yellow Jackets as well. Like my dad, many of these players didn't keep scrapbooks or programs or any material from their playing years - they lived in hotel rooms and and traveled by train all the time and kept it simple. I'm lucky he lived a long life - when he turned 91 the Giants sent a video team up here to interview him because his record run was 91 yards, and they did a pre-game piece out of it. Some of us think this group would be better represented in a list or article. Before you, no one suggested that any of the other eight categories (I didn't check, did you create them all?) should be treated separately from Category:100 receiving touchdown club. I suspect — depending on others people's input in the next few days — that all of the categories will be treated the same and either deleted, renamed, or kept are they are. If they are deleted, the names can be made into a list, which, to tell you the truth, has many advantages over the category in these cases. ×Meegs 15:23, 18 August 2006 (UTC)

I'm not sure. To tell you the truth, I'm not certain that an article/list specifically about, say, the 200 touchdown club, won't eventually find its way onto WP:AFD. A single article covering all of the most important of these "clubs" might have a chance, though. Someone at Wikipedia:WikiProject National Football League might be able to advise you better. User:Bill shannon, who doesn't edit much anymore, started the articles NFL Records (Individual) and NFL Records (Team) in December, so tying-in with them might be a good idea. Those pages are also somewhat problematic, though, as many of the stats are dated. Really, post to to project talk page and ask for advice. It's been pretty quiet over there, but with the season approaching, I image that things will be picking up. ×Meegs 16:27, 18 August 2006 (UTC)

And no, I don't suggest continuing to fill-up the categories right now, as it is possible that they are going to be deleted. The problem is not that they are incomplete right now; the problem is that we will never be able to promise the reader that they are complete. One of several problems with categories is that they are very hard to monitor since their membership is determined by edits on many different pages. For example, who would notice if a vandal or newbie editor removed Kermit Alexander from the 40 interception cat? You might, if he was on your watch list, but a reader might take the reduced category as the complete set of 40 interception players. ×Meegs 16:37, 18 August 2006 (UTC)
