Stoke-Derby Line

See Crewe to Derby Line

Hello, I think you should be aware that the Stoke-Derby Line is just a part of the Crewe-Derby-Nottingham line and that the entire service runs through from Crewe to Derby with most trains continuing to Nottingham, Grantham and Skegness. There is no separate Derby-Stoke service. Perhaps you would reconsider your latest edit. NoelWalley 12:18, 19 May 2006 (UTC)

My reply on your talk page
Hi Pickle. Have I seen you on Railchat? The issue of Wikpedia names for lines is a bit artificial. Stoke-Skegness particularly so as it is made up of fragments of various lines, and some of us want to build up a history of railway lines. A simple example is the Hope Valley Line which is the combination of two former railways, plus a fragment of a third. Chevin 08:44, 22 May 2006 (UTC)
Hi Pickle and Chevin,
Not quite sure where we are at on this. I think mine was the last relevent change to Stoke-on-Trent. Situation now is that the North Stafford Railway's Crewe to Derby line now only has through trains between Crewe and Derby. Extended services to Nottingham, Grantham and Skegness have all been withdrawn. I now see no justification for mentioning Stoke in connection with Skegness. NoelWalley 09:25, 22 May 2006 (UTC)
I've also written to Noel after his note me. I jumped in after the edit to Derby Station, so I'm a bit out of synch. I note there is a page on the Crewe to Derby Line based on its original history. The present day official name is different for different bits, of course. What I hadn't cottoned on to was that the issue seems to be the infobox at the bottom of Derby station, dealing with present day trains. I should say that they also don't stop at Peartree. Chevin 11:58, 22 May 2006 (UTC)
1) Copied this over to the Crewe-Derby line talk page
2) Chevin - I'm afraid I'm not on railchat, to many Projects (and work) running at the moment to get into another thing!!!). I acknowledge the huge problem on Wikipedia and rail transport in the UK/GB of reconciling passenger services and the actual rail they run on. I've done lots of work on the Southeastern page, as i live in Kent and am *only* at uni in Stoke (Keele), and we have the same issue. The only reason I've rocked the boat (LOL) is i found a brilliant site with station and line info for a series of Midlands rail services. Pickle 16:58, 23 May 2006 (UTC)
Know the feeing! For "naming" you can't easily even use the present day one. Different sections of the Crewe-Derby for instance have different "official" ones. Incidentally, just to put the record straight they do now stop at Peartree after all. Up to last year it was the B'ham train. Chevin 08:35, 24 May 2006 (UTC)
This is all yet one more part of the (as far as I know) still ongoing line v. service saga. There is a Derby to Stoke line and it carries the Derby to Crewe service (as does the WCML between Stoke and Crewe). One day, perhaps, this will all be sorted out, but I'm beginning to think we railway contributors are all too quarrelsome a bunch and it would be better perhaps to concentrate on Mongolian moth varieties or the hydrography of North-West Canada... ;-) -- Picapica 19:32, 13 August 2006 (UTC)
Amen to that ;) Pickle 02:52, 15 August 2006 (UTC)

NoelWalley - Pickled

Hello, I am Noel Walley, you and I keep discussing things yet we have never met. Good luck with your studies at Keele University where I employed my computing skills until my retirement years ago. Today I have had some good news medically speaking so I am now pickled in good french wine. Kind regards, NoelWalley 20:35, 21 June 2006 (UTC)

Smets

No problem, it's not easy to know that kind of thing. I'll do the same for Joël Robert (now Joel Robert) as well. "Joel" would be pronounced "you'll", while it is actually more like "yo-el" (or geo-el, with a sound like in George). Bye, Fram 14:15, 18 August 2006 (UTC)

Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme

In 1904, when the FIM was set up, the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland was the political entity for which the AutoCycle Union was a founding member. Your change to Great Britain is inaccurate because it refers specifically to a geographical entity that even by your own comment ACU represents just GB (inc. IOM and Channel Islands) does not include the IOM, Channel Islands or Northern Ireland. What you most likely really wanted to refer to was the current political entity of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland but that was NOT the political entity in which the ACU was a founding member of the FIM. I could understand that you might want to refer to the current political entity that the ACU encompasses but that is not what is being stated here.

I don't think it is necessary, as we are recording history here, but perhaps we need to state: "The British AutoCycle Union was one of the founding members but now it is the governing body of motorcycle sport in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland that includes the Isle of Man and Channel Islands."

If you wish to reply please do so on the FIM talk page. ww2censor 02:53, 24 August 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for cleaning up that small part my main point was it shouldn't be combined with dualsport as it was before. --Budlight 12:16, 19 September 2006 (UTC)

link to British

Hello, when you want to link to the article about something British, please do not link to British, as that is a disambiguation page (which nothing should be linked to). Instead link to the one of the options found on that page such as United Kingdom or Great Britain by writing out [[United Kingdom|British]] or [[Great Britain|British]]. How many freaking motorcycle talk pages did you add the motorcycle project banner to? Did you do that manually or with a Bot? Well done, thanks ww2censor 17:35, 18 October 2006 (UTC)
I was sitting down with many bottles of beer last night - lazy student or what! - Don't know how to use a bot I'm afraid (it wouldn't half save some work on some of the projects im working on!) Pickle 17:38, 18 October 2006 (UTC)

Hare scramble

For lack of historical information the article's been dormant. Glad to see you stopped by! Nice work on the Motocross article. A while back I called Racer Productions seeking assistance finding references and spoke with Jason Weigandt. Nice folks, as you know but they were unaware of references to suggest. The history of hare scrambles hasn't been written. If you can help with the article, please do. Thanks--Scribner 15:09, 18 October 2006 (UTC)

I'm afraid the world of off road racing works different over here (UK), and its all called Enduro where there are Time Card events (ie traditional Enduros) and Hare and Hounds (H&H). Some people run events called "Hare Scrambles" but they are H&H's (i can't tell the difference!). So from my prospective, knowledge, contacts and literary resource I'm afraid I'm unable to help you!!! I wouldn't be surprised if one of the many US / North American magazines hasn't already covered this, i only occasionally browse the Race X Ill website I'm afraid. Category renaming

Your post on requested moves found the right place for requesting a move of an article - normally you would want to use {{subst:cfr}} to initiate a noncontroversial category renaming. I created the new category Category:Motorcycle sport for you, but it is currently unpopulated; you'll need to fix the in-article category assignments to point to the new category. (I think there's a bot do to this, or was at one point, but I haven't been able to find it anywhere.) Once the existing category is depopulated, it can be deleted. Thought I was hung out to dry for awhile there. Owe ya. You were the only one from the Motorcycling Project with the cojones to post. Appreciated. Seasalt 11:55, 12 December 2006 (UTC)

Cheers, that guy is really taking it a bit too personally IMHO, we're only trying our best to flesh out an under covered topic, and your going for the extremely odd stuff (Russian bikes) and he's going apesh*t over subtle nuances (or soviet nationalism, who knows). Know one needs that sort of stuff ;) Pickle 17:52, 12 December 2006 (UTC)

And you read FN motorcycle (saw extra link in 'what links here")and added a link. I have to add racing history too. Thanx. The paradox is he could be good for the Russian bikes if he keeps editing. He's actually made some good edits, made some of the puzzling bits clearer. Lifes wierd like that.Seasalt 09:05, 15 December 2006 (UTC)

As the French (and Frank Sinatra) say; "c'est la vie". I know from early MX history (post WW2 to 60's) that the main competition to the British came from Belgian riders on FN. Could probably chase some books listing the years they rode events like the MXDN on FNs. Pickle 20:02, 18 December 2006 (UTC)
1955 "The group course consisted of three different branches of the motor sport, the rule moderations rides, the cross competitions and the 24 hours." From net translation of Dutch FN website.(Is that regularity trials, motocross, 24 hours, and what is the "group course"? ) Have begun an FN racing section on a user/test page, User:Seasalt/Vincent Only two sources really. Feel free to check it out, & give advice, as i'm stronger on on-road racing than off-road racing. Seasalt 02:09, 24 December 2006 (UTC)
Sorry I'm late in reply, on sort of wikiholiday for the xmas break and am slowly catching up with stuff. As you say there are obviously flaws in the translation (computers translate literally) - i presume it means motocross and road racing - trials as i understand never really took off in the low countries (some presence in Belgium and Luxembourg, but never as big as in Spain or the UK). I'll try and dig up some off road sources (primarly machines used by winning MXDN teams - ie the Belgians!) to give you some help. Pickle 19:49, 29 December 2006 (UTC)
