Hi Laura - I liked your potential topics you propose. I suggest re-framing from "how different cultures set expectations" to "youth unemployment." This article has a great deal of potential for editing: Youth Unemployment. Also, incorporating the global south into this topic of academic inflation(Craig Jeffrey's article on Culture of Waiting in India is relevant here, but we have readings on the gap between credentials and jobs in several contexts.Prof.Vandegrift (talk) 19:29, 6 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

FYI

[edit]

Hi, Plumbla: I've removed the {{course assignment}} template from your user page, as it's actually meant to be placed only on talk pages of articles that you work on. Thanks, and happy editing! —Theopolisme (talk) 23:48, 10 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I think the topic of Youth Unemployment is very interesting and relevant to many of the articles we have already read in class. The topic is large but it could be manageable if you choose a specific country. I quickly searched "Youth Unemployment in..." and the only country that has a current Wikipedia article on youth unemployment is the United Kingdom. There is a lot of potential for you to begin another article about youth unemployment in a specific country! MKassmeier (talk) 04:27, 22 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I think Grade inflation would be an interesting topic to cover, but would you be focusing on a specific country or region or how would you narrow your topic? I guess I'm not sure myself how grade inflation effects youth on a global basis either.AshleyMichelleThompson (talk) 17:46, 22 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Welcome

Hi Plumbla. Welcome to Wikipedia! I'm an online ambassador for your Global Youth Studies course at Drake. If you have any questions, check out Wikipedia:Questions, ask me on my talk page, chat with us on IRC, or ask your question on this page and then place {{helpme}} before the question.

The grade inflation article could benefit from examples from the Global South. As the youth unemployment article is only two sentences long, there's a real need for some substance there. A global perspective on that article would be well-received. Gobōnobō + c 20:16, 22 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Good job - now, complete the edits

[edit]

I saw your proposed edits on Credential inflation and Grade inflation. Follow the Wikipedia "be bold" motto and go ahead and edit the credential inflation using the edit you suggested on the talk page. That way, I can give the credit for the March 1st assignment. You're 3/4 the way there! I will write a separate comment about your three paragraphs. I like how you're working with the course topics in consider your edits. And, how you're going to town on the Iowa Politics edits. Go, Plumbla! Prof.Vandegrift (talk) 05:10, 13 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Professor - I went bold and added the sentence to the page Credential Inflation! --Plumbla (talk) 19:37, 13 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Plumbla, Hello! I like your idea. It's very much needed, and very doable in a semester. I would, as you suggest, search for a few case studies such as South Africa, etc. I would also hope you could include a general overview about Youth unemployment globally. You might look in Furlong and also the Handbook of Youth and Young Adulthood which is in our library. I look forward to seeing your work on this! Feedback on 3.27 sources

[edit]

Hi Plumbla! I made the grade change you noted on my talk page.

The sources you have are good academic articles. We can decide later on how/if you will use them. They feel very specific and detailed - why did you choose Russia and Jordan. Because the Youth Unemployment is so important as an article and so underdeveloped, you can approach the topic from a much more basic level. You have begun this by putting in some reasons from Furlong for youth unemployment. The IMF document we read, as well as Furlong and Jeffrey have additional explanations for why there is higher youth unemployment. Would the Handbook of Youth and Young Adults, also by Furlong, have something in its article on employment?
Additional background/statistics: Given our foundational background in youth unemployment, what is missing from the article? This will guide you in deciding where to go from here for additional sources (including statistics). Good luck - there's lots that can be done!
Also, I found this source among user:Scarlson0921's sources - looks good for you! Elder S. Global Employment Trends For Youth : Special Issue On The Impact Of The Global Economic Crisis On Youth [e-book]. ILO; 2010. Available from: eBook Collection (EBSCOhost), Ipswich, MA. Accessed April 2, 2013.

Feedback response

Thanks much for the feedback! I will definitely be putting a lot of it to use. I haven't done a real read through yet, because I have only been re-formatting the information that was already available but I will definitely be on a lookout for grammatical errors now! You also said something about it looking like I had less information than the existing article. Could you please explain that to me more? I took all of the information from the cultural section of the menarche article and put it in my sandbox as it was, before reformatting. I just want to make sure I didn't forget anything. Maybe it looks like less information because of the new formatting? Thanks again for the feedback! Shelby.Hill-Killerlain (talk) 00:51, 30 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Hey Plumbla! I just want to begin by saying WOW! What an article, it is clear how much work you put into this article about youth unemployment on a global level. Below are some summary points you can expect as I hand you back my written, annotated edits and thoughts in class tonight. Writing and Style: You are such a great writer. It is clear you know a lot about this topic and your writing completely adheres to the idea of encyclopedic writing. I had zero complaints with your stylistic elements at all, great job! Structure of Article: I love the overall structure of your article. The subheads you chose are perfect for answering the questions that come to mind as I was reading and that made for perfect organization of information. I however did think the word causation under "causes" was too strong for what we are studying, as it is difficult to establish a cause and effect relationship in any case, especially in social research. Also I wanted to see explanation paragraphs on why the causes and consequences were relevant to the intro paragraph, which does an excellent job introducing the idea of youth unemployment, as you added a clearly global perspective. Content: Such a fantastic job on content! I learned so much by reading this article and it is even more clear how much work you put into it! This will be a great addition to the Wikipedia community. I only asked for the introduction and explanatory paragraphs for overall clarity! WP Community standards: Few, if any, visible errors. Everything was cited perfectly and appears encyclopedic in nature. Great job!

I can't wait to read your final product! Fantastic job! Jduden (talk) 16:36, 1 May 2013 (UTC)jduden[reply]
