August 2009[edit]

Welcome to Wikipedia. Although everyone is welcome to contribute constructively to the encyclopedia, one or more of the external links you added such as to the page Volvo World Match Play Championship do not comply with our guidelines for external links and have been removed. Wikipedia is not a collection of links; nor should it be used for advertising or promotion, and doing so is contrary to the goals of this project. Since Wikipedia uses nofollow tags, external links do not alter search engine rankings. If you feel the link should be added to the article, please discuss it on the article's talk page before reinserting it. Please take a look at the welcome page to learn more about contributing to this encyclopedia. Thank you. wjematherbigissue 22:15, 16 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the comment. I understand you all do a great job and have to be carefull with external links but I do not see anything in the Wikipedia EL policy that could be in conflict with the external link. GolfinSpain.com publishes additional information about the event... ticket, prices, access information, etc that you are welcomed to republish or include in the article but would not make sense. It's also the official ticket sales site for the event. I understand nofollow links and as it's not the case of wanting to SPAM the article at all. We've simply been doing it in the past for Volvo Masters articles for example, and honestly feel that not allowing external links to relevant information about (in this case) an event, such as where to buy your tickets for it, it's not exactly very HTML/web friendly. With this in mind you should probably remove the link to the event's website... as you might consider this a commercial one. I wont insist any further. I was considering creating an Spanish version about the event but I am now concerned that someone might also see that as a commercial intention and won't publish it. Thanks. Jose Luis.

Sorry you feel that way, but any link to a ticket site can only be described as advertising (unless the article specifically concerns that ticket site). The official event website is obviously a valid link, as is the European Tour event coverage link. Regards, wjematherbigissue 17:35, 17 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
It's not only "a" ticket site!!. It's not only the only place to buy tickets in advance, but we also include accommodation, map, access information and will include updates about the event as it gets closer. We also then conver the event, etc. You can track our Volvo Masters coverage for the past 6 years, or the one for WGC or Ryder Cup 97. Nevertheless I understand you are not changing your mind and I obviously disagree of your concept of "advertising" vs "information". I don't think Wikipedia should suddenly become so extremely selective but I won't waist anymore your time or mine. Thanks.
It is not a sudden change of policy by Wikipedia. It just so happened that no-one noticed or removed your links previously. golfinspain.com is an entirely separate commercial entity to all those tournaments, and as is not considered an acceptable external link in this instance. Your description of the site only serves to confirm that view. There are many news sources that are available for information that are better suited for use in an encyclopaedia.
